Ukraine on Thursday (October 6) said that it had recaptured swathes of territory in southern Kherson region. The counter-offensive has undermined Russia's claim to have annexed the territories. Russia launched Ukraine invasion on February 24 this year. After sustained gains in initial months of the conflict, the Russian forces have had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counter-offensive.

"The Armed Forces of Ukraine have liberated more than 400 square kilometres of the Kherson region since the beginning of October," Ukrainian southern army command spokeswoman Natalia Gumeniuk said in a briefing online.

A research released on Friday estimates that it will take $349 billion to rebuild Ukraine after the destruction brought on by the Russian invasion.

According to a combined assessment by the Ukrainian government, the European Commission, and the World Bank, the amount, which is 1.5 times the size of the Ukrainian economy, is only a minimum and is anticipated to rise in the ensuing months as the war continues.

According to the assessment, the physical damage alone caused since the invasion in late February through June 1 was already $97 billion.

Rebuilding Ukraine to cost $349 bn: report

Tensions flared up in the US Open 2022 on Thursday as Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk refused to shake hands with Belarusian Victoria Azarenka after their second-round clash. Azarenka defeated Kostyuk 6-2,6-2 in straight games before the duo ditched the traditional handshake to just tap their racquets.

While she ditched Azarenka, Kostyuk was seen shaking hands with the chair umpire and other officials. The acrimony over Russia's invasion of Ukraine was felt on the court at the US Open after Kostyuk's action. This is not the first time, the Ukrainian tennis star has taken a stand against Russian and Belarusian athletes.

Hollywood actor and producer Ben Stiller called Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy his 'hero' as they met in Kyiv recently. Still is visiting Ukraine as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and visited the Office of the President after a visit to the occupied settlements of the Kyiv region.

On Monday, they visited, in particular, the ruined residential areas of Irpin, where they talked to people who survived the occupation.

"It's one thing to see this destruction on TV or on social networks. Another thing is to see it all with your own eyes. That`s a lot more shocking," said Stiller.

"What you saw in Irpin is definitely dreadful. But it is even worse to just imagine what is happening in the settlements that are still under temporary occupation in the east," Zelenskyy said in response. During the conversation, Stiller told Zelenskyy, "You're my hero."

The President and the actor discussed the needs of temporarily displaced persons in Ukraine, as well as those in Poland, which Ben Stiller visited the day before. Stiller visited Zelenskyy with a UNHCR delegation and discussed ways of further cooperation of the Ukrainian authorities with UNHCR.

On World Refugee Day, Stiller called for compassion and support for all refugees around the world and those forced to flee. During a visit to Poland and Ukraine this week, where Stiller is meeting those recently forced to flee their homes, the actor, director, and long-term Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, is calling for urgent global support and funding, not only for those affected by the Ukraine crisis, but for every one of the 100 million around the world who have been forced to flee.

In a statement to mark World Refugee Day today, Stiller said,"I`m here meeting people forced to flee their homes due to the war in Ukraine. People have shared stories about how the war has changed their lives - how they`ve lost everything and are deeply worried about their future."

"Over the years I`ve had the chance to meet refugees and asylum seekers from around the world-from Syria, Central America, Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Ukraine," he added.

Since Saturday 18 June, Stiller has been in Poland and Ukraine meeting with individuals and families who have been displaced due to the war.

Russia’s ally Belarus could soon join Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine, CNN reports citing officials from US and NATO.

The news outlet, quoting sources from the Belarus opposition, claimed that thousands of Belarusian forces are prepared to be deployed and can land Ukraine any time in the “next few days”.

“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin needs support. Anything would help,” a NATO military official told CNN.

Another NATO intelligence official alleged that the Belarusian government “is preparing the environment to justify a Belarusian offensive against Ukraine."

Another NATO intelligence official alleged that the Belarusian government “is preparing the environment to justify a Belarusian offensive against Ukraine." This latest development comes a month after Belarus changed its constitution last month to allow the country to host both Russian forces and nuclear weapons permanently. As the Russian-Ukraine war entered the 28th day, the UK intelligence report said that Russian troops have been facing stiff resistance due to which it has been unable to capture the capital Kyiv. “Russian forces advancing on the city from the northeast have stalled. Forces advancing from the direction of Hostomel to the northwest have been repulsed by fierce Ukrainian resistance.” the ministry of defence said in a statement. A Russian military strike on barracks at southern Mykolaiv city of Ukraine claimed 50 lives, while 50 more are feared to be dead, AFP reported quoting officials and witnesses on the ground.

According to reports, six rockets hit the site which originally had served as a young officers' academy around 6 am on Friday.

"An enormous explosion," one resident, Nikolai told AFP. The blast reduced to rubble several buildings in the district.

“No less than 200 soldiers were sleeping in the barracks," said Maxim, 22, who had been stationed nearby and looks on aghast at the scale of the destruction.

"At least 50 bodies have been pulled out, but we don't know how many remain under the debris," he added.

Another soldier, Yevgeny, says as many as 100 people could have been killed, in the attack. So far, no official statement has been issued on the number of casualties.

Around 100 feared dead in Russian attack on military barracks in southern Ukraine: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech at a pro-war rally in a Moscow stadium was cut-off mysteriously on Friday when he was talking on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the annexation of Crimea.

According to reports, Russian state television suddenly cut away from Putin hailing its “special operation in Ukraine” and the bravery of its soldiers to patriotic songs – prompting confusion among audiences.

The incident took place when was speaking in front of 100,000 supporters at Luzhniki Stadium when his speech was interrupted mid-way to play a concert by singer and composer Oleg Gazmanov.

A woman translating his speech could be heard saying: “The beginning of the operation coincided by accident with the birthday of one of our military leaders…” before the feed cut out.

Such interruptions are highly unusual considering that Russian media is tightly controlled by the government.

Around 10 minutes later, Putin’s speech, which lasted about five minutes, was re-aired from the start soon afterwards, following which he walked off the stage.

Before anyone could speculate the reasons, the Kremlin quickly issued a statement saying that it was a “technical glitch” that interrupted Putin's speech.

According to RIA news agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said a server glitch had caused the interruption.

During his speech, Putin sought to justify his actions by claiming that Ukraine was committing genocide in the Donbas region.

“This really was genocide. Stopping that was the goal of the special operation,” Putin said, adding – contrary to evidence Ukrainian civilians had welcomed Moscow’s invading troops.

Ukrainian football manager Yuriy Vernydub had celebrated passionately as he inspired his club Sheriff Tiraspol to a stunning win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League in September last year. Sheriff Tiraspol had pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the Champions League history as they earned a 2-1 win over 13-time European champions Real Madrid at their home - Santiago Bernabeu.

The victory had helped the Moldovanclub finish on top of Group D which also had the likes of Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk along with Real Madrid. It was one of the biggest wins in the history of the club, which have an annual budget of around only 6-7 million USD. After guiding the minnows to a win against the La Liga giants, Vernydub is now back in his home country - Ukraine, far from the football field for an entirely different battle.

Six months after the win over Real Madrid, Vernydub left his team midway through their Europa League campaign last week to return to Ukraine to support the country in their ongoing war against Russia. Russia has launched a full-fledged military invasion of Ukraine and the country is battling hard amid support from all corners of the globe.

Like many other former and current sports stars in Ukraine, Vernydub has exchanged his coaching gear for that of the Ukrainian forces and is ready to fight against Russia. The football coach has joined the Ukrainian forces and a picture of him in army uniform has left many on social media inspired.

After their area was reportedly taken over by the troops, hundreds of Ukrainians halted Russian soldiers from taking possession of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station.

The facility, located near Enerhodar city, is Europe's largest. It's interesting to note that the plant is nearly 240 kilometres from Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

According to CNN, a video that went viral on social media shows plant workers and bystanders congregating en masse on the facility's entrance road and surrounding railroad tracks.

People are also seen hoisting Ukrainian flags and blocking streets with garbage trucks, according to the video.

It comes after the Russian military took control of the Chernobyl nuclear power complex last Thursday.

Here's how tech giants are combating Russia's invasion of Ukraine

A convoy of Russian tanks was ground to a halt after hundreds of unarmed Ukrainian civilians blocked their path on the outskirts of northern Koryukivka town, located near the Ukraine-Russia border.

A 24-second video, which was shared by news agency AFP, went viral on Twitter on Monday, where many hailed the “brave” citizens.

According to reports, Russian soldiers had lost their way and stopped to ask for directions when they found themselves surrounded by locals.

In the footage, Ukrainians can purportedly be seen walking towards a convoy of tanks to prevent them from marching on to capital Kyiv.

The defiant men formed a human shield, forcing the convoy to retreat, while the soldiers looked on from their war vehicles.

The video emerged a day after a brave Ukrainian man was filmed trying to block a convoy of several Russian tanks with just his hands.

Ukrainian hospitals are running on low medical oxygen with the supply lasting for the next 24 hours, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned as the Russian invasion disrupts transportation across the country.

In a statement released on Sunday, the WHO said that the oxygen supply situation is nearing a very dangerous point in Ukraine.

Trucks are unable to transport oxygen supplies from plants to hospitals across the country, including the capital Kyiv," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement.

"The majority of hospitals could exhaust their oxygen reserves within the next 24 hours. Some have already run out. This puts thousands of lives at risk."

The country’s demand for liquid oxygen shot by 25% after Russia invaded Ukraine last week, according to the WHO.

The global health agency called for the establishment to create a safe transit corridor to increase oxygen supplies to Ukraine via a logistics route through neighbouring Poland.

Oxygen is essential for patients with a range of conditions, including the 1,700 in hospital with COVID-19 and those with other critical illnesses stemming from complications of pregnancy, childbirth, sepsis, injuries and trauma.

Critical hospital services were also being jeopardised by electricity and power shortages, while ambulances transporting patients were in danger of getting caught in the crossfire.

The WHO said it was looking to increase supplies, most likely using liquid oxygen and cylinders from regional networks. These supplies would need safe transit routes after leaving a logistics corridor through Poland.

Medical oxygen supplies may run out in 24 hours in war-hit Ukraine, warns WHO

Ever since Russia launched military attacks on its neighbour Ukraine, various countries have retaliated with sanctions, both political and economic.

On Thursday, Putin warned Russian business leaders to brace for further “restrictions” on the economy, but called for business to work “in solidarity” with the government.

Let’s take a look at the latest major sanctions announced by the countries.

United States

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday unveiling a set of economic sanctions, saying that “Putin chose this war”.

The sanctions include export blocks on technology, which Biden's said would severely limit Russia's ability to advance its military and aerospace sector.

In a statement, the White House said, “This includes Russia-wide restrictions on semiconductors, telecommunication, encryption security, lasers, sensors, navigation, avionics and maritime technologies.”

Washington also sanctioned two Russia’s state-owned banks – VEB and Promsvyazbank – and blocked them from trading in its debt on US and European markets.

The two Russian banks are considered especially close to the Kremlin and Russia’s military, with more than $80 billion in assets.

That includes freezing all of those banks’ assets under US jurisdictions.

More than 80 per cent of Russia’s daily foreign exchange transactions and half its trade are conducted in US dollars.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has announced sanctions on 100 individuals and entities as part of further sanctions against Russia, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Thursday afternoon.

In a speech to parliament, Johnson said the goal was “to exclude Russian banks from the UK financial system.”

Five Russian banks and three Russian billionaires—Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rotenberg and Igor Rotenberg— have been sanctioned.

Johnson also said that "nothing is off the table" when it comes to shutting off Russia's access to SWIFT (messaging network used by financial institutions such as banks to send and receive money transfer orders or information quickly, securely, and accurately).

Going forward, Britain is also hoping to bring in legislation "early next week" to ban the export of certain technologies to Russia, particularly "in sectors including electronics, telecommunications, and aerospace," according to Johnson.

Taiwan

On Friday, Taiwan said it would join the economic sanctions against Russia, without giving details of the measures being considered.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday that it “strongly condemns” Russia's decision to start a war against Ukraine, adding that it has posed a serious threat to the rules-based international order.

Taiwan is a global leader in the production of semiconductors.

European Union

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French president Emmanuel Macron announced new measures on Friday, vowing to inflict "maximum impact on the Russian economy and political elite."

"We will hold the Kremlin accountable," said von der Leyen.

The sanctions are aimed to hit Russia's financial, energy and transport sectors, and include export controls and trade financing bans.

The sanctions also seek to limit Russia's access to sensitive technology, as well as aircraft components and equipment.

Japan

Japan has imposed sanctions targeting Russian financial institutions, military organisations and individuals in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Friday.

The range of measures include freezing the assets of certain Russian individuals and financial institutions while also banning exports to Russian military organisations.

Australia

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday said that it would “begin imposing further sanctions on oligarchs, whose economic weight is of strategic significance to Moscow and over 300 members of the Russian Duma, their parliament.”

Canberra has imposed travel bans and sanctions on several Russians "aiding" a Ukrainian invasion

Foreign Minister Marise Payne is considering expelling Russia's ambassador if need be.

New Zealand

New Zealand said it is prohibiting the export of goods to the Russian military and security forces in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Friday announced that it would cut trade with Russia and impose travel bans against Russian officials as it continued to call for a return to diplomatic dialogue to resolve the crisis.

Germany

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the halting of the process of certifying the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia – a lucrative deal long sought by Moscow but criticised by the US for increasing Europe’s reliance on Russian energy.

The $11.6 billion project is owned by Russian state-owned gas giant Gazprom
