On Monday, Russia delivered enriched uranium to France. A cargo ship unloaded cylinders of uranium from Russia at the French port of Dunkirk. Western allies are clashing over the inclusion of uranium and other nuclear tech in sanctions. However, nuclear fuel shipments continue to make their way to the EU. As per Greenpeace, shipments of nuclear fuel are bankrolling the war in Ukraine and prolonging Europe’s energy dependence. The NGO said the latest shipment marked the seventh delivery of uranium from Russia to France since the start of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. In a report earlier this month, Greenpeace criticised France's dependence on Russian nuclear power. It said France had received a third of the enriched uranium needed to operate nuclear power plants for one year from Russia. The French government denied the claims. The government said France does not depend in any way on Russia for the operation of its nuclear power plants.

Russia must be held responsible for over 2,000 environment damages of war: Ukraine

World leaders at the ongoing Group of 20 (G20) summit released a draft of the declaration on Tuesday, in which they said that "most" members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and its repercussions on the global economy. This was mentioned in the 16-page draft that is yet to be adopted by G20 member countries.

The document also mentioned the G20 members' concern over global food security challenges that are posed in front of the world due to escalations between Russia and Ukraine. As Ukraine is among the top three exporters of grain in the world and is also often called the "bread basket of Europe", it is becoming difficult for Ukraine to produce grains due to disruptions of supply lines. On the other hand, Russia is also among the major producers of staple food items, both Ukraine and Russia together provide 90 per cent of the wheat supply in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Eritrea, Georgia, Mongolia and Somalia.

The draft stated, "Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy," commenting that Russia had opposed dialogue.

Suggesting that some countries may not have agreed to the draft declaration, a European diplomat said, "There were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions". The declaration was drafted in the first session of the summit held on Tuesday, in which many countries also condemned Russia over its invasion of Ukraine or the "special military operation", as declared by Russia.

The draft declaration further added that "Recognising that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy." This was mentioned in a response to the Russian foreign ministry's statement on Sunday that G20 was not the place where security issues should be discussed, rather world's economic challenges should be prioritised.

While highlighting the debt issues, the draft declaration focuses on the importance of all creditors sharing a fair burden, without the mention of China. China has been criticised by the west for delaying efforts in mitigating the burden for some emerging countries.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also urged leaders at the summit via a video link to take some concrete actions against Russia's war in his country under a peace plan proposed by him.

Morning news brief: Trump's lawyers resist special master's request, Angelina Jolie visits Pakistan, and more

Six months after a rocket landed in his vineyard in southern Ukraine in the first weeks of Russia's invasion, Georgiy Molchanov is now harvesting his grapes and wondering what to name this year's unforgettable wartime vintage.

"We need to show ... there is a wine for victory," said Molchanov who, like other craft winemakers as well as larger enterprises across Ukraine, is determined to keep producing wine despite extraordinary adversity.

At one point a huge fire broke out when a wild pig stumbled into unexploded ordnance and tore through four hectares of land near his six-hectare property near the city of Mykolaiv.

"You have to work, continue living and making plans for the future - and to hope that rockets don't come to your house," says Molchanov, who runs the SliVino Village winery.

An hour's drive to the southwest, in a largely abandoned Black Sea resort, the much larger Koblevo https://www.koblevo.ua/ winery had Russian paratroopers landing in its fields. One of its staff at a sister plant nearer Mykolaiv was killed.

Many of the winery's workers quit to join the army; others made Molotov cocktails out of empty bottles or crafted the fabric netting used to camouflage the ubiquitous checkpoints that are now all over the country.

The company began labelling some bottles of wine "We are from Ukraine" and sent a portion of sales to the army, says director Vitalii Ryboshapko, who joined staff at the vast production facility working the fields when the war began.

"For every Ukrainian ... the first challenge is surviving in the current climate," he said. "We do what we can today and try to support our country, so it can live on in these hard conditions."

ALCOHOL BAN, CLOSED PORTS

Koblevo sits in the heart of one of Ukraine's key winemaking regions, where it processes 10,000 tons of grapes per season, accounting for about 15% of the wine produced in the country.

The war has hit winemakers on several fronts.

Ukraine banned the sale of alcohol during the first two months of the war. Exports - a key source of revenue for Koblevo and other big wineries - have shrivelled due to the blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports.

Consumption of wine has fallen 20% since before the war, the company says, while sparkling wines are down by half because of the lack of parties and reasons to celebrate.

Evgeniy Safonov, who served only Ukrainian wines at his bar in the eastern city of Kharkiv before it was damaged by shelling, doubts Ukrainian wines will benefit from wartime solidarity.

Ukrainian wines, he says, are largely unknown abroad, and even at home most people still prefer beer or vodka.

"Give us 10 years after the war and we can show the wine market we exist," he said.

At Koblevo, which exported to 14 countries before the war, winemaker Tatyna Matveyeva says she pours her love for her country into the wine she makes.

"I think you have to keep on living in any situation and value every day and every second," she says, wearing a jacket adorned with the traditional vyshyvanka embroidery. "This is why we make our wine, so its taste and feel can help people live on, reminding them that life is not over."

A few kilometres down the road from Koblevo, Liubov Pleshka toils mostly alone to run Lautari https://lautarywine.business.site/?utm_source=gmb&utm_medium=referral, a small organic winery she launched with her son in 2017. He is now serving at the front.

The vineyard with its beautiful view and free-ranging chickens reminds her of her childhood in Moldova, where her father also made wine. For now, she is grateful that no rocket has struck her home and she prays for peace.

"This is what happens in life," she said. "Hard work, hard work, but if you put your soul into it, the work flows, and there is hope for tomorrow."

It has been 154 days since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which caused uncountable damage to the country and several casualties so far. Amid this war zone, Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, and his wife, Olena Zelenska, appeared on the cover page of Vogue magazine. Though the photoshoot in the midst of a conflict may look absurd, Vogue describes Ukraine’s First Lady as a “key player” and the face of the nation. The magazine named the digital edition “Portrait of bravery”, placing Zelenska on its cover as she strikes a pose for the cameras, accompanied by soldiers and debris from the annexation. In another image shared by Vogue on its Instagram handle, Zelenska is sitting inside the presidential office, wearing casual black pants with a white top. The couple talked about several topics with the magazine. They spoke about their nearly 20 years of marriage, their shared past, and leading life without their children, who must be kept apart because of Russia’s ongoing invasion of the nation. In a face-to-face interview, the President and First Lady spoke to a Vogue crew in Kyiv. The shoot in Ukraine was handled by Vogue’s go-to photographer, Annie Leibovitz. Sharing an image from the shoot on Instagram, Vogue wrote, “As the war in Ukraine enters a critical new phase, the country’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, has become a key player — a frontline diplomat and the face of her nation’s emotional toll.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vogue (@voguemagazine) × Also Read: Rashmika Mandanna glows in a red Varun Bahl creation at India Couture Week Furthermore, Zelenska also revealed how she and her husband met at the high school in their native town, Kryvyi Rih, in southeast Ukraine, adding that they both started dating when they were at university. Ukraine announced Saturday the deaths of four foreign military volunteers fighting Russian forces, whose invasion has spurred a wave of solidarity abroad including from experienced combat veterans.

The International Legion of Defence of Ukraine, an official volunteer brigade, announced the men from Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and France had died but did not specify when or under what circumstances.

"We lost our brothers in combat but their bravery, their memory and legacy will forever inspire us," it said in a statement.

AFP journalists in Kharkiv last month were present at the May 21 burial of the Dutch citizen named in the statement, Ronald Vogelaar. Colleagues said he had been killed several days earlier by artillery.

The Australian was reported killed in May and his death was confirmed by a foreign affairs department spokesperson.

Tasmania's Mercury newspaper identified the man as Michael Charles O'Neill, 47. A tribute on Facebook said he was "driving the wounded and injured from the front line".
