A UK woman who was sent to jail after she obtained abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy during the Covid pandemic will be released following a court decision on Tuesday (July 18). The woman, identified as Carla Foster (45) in British media reports, won appeal against her jail sentence. She was handed a jail sentence of 28 months in June this year.

On Tuesday, three judges reduced the 28-month sentence by half and suspended 14 months. As per Sky News, the woman will have to complete up to 50 days of activity.

"This is a very sad case... It is a case that calls for compassion, not punishment, and where no useful purpose is served by detaining Ms Foster in custody," said Dame Victoria Sharp who was sitting with Lord Justice Holroyde and Mrs Justice Lambert. She was quoted by Sky News.

Foster appeared at the hearing via a video link from Foston Hall Prison. She has spent 35 days there. She is a mother of three children and has previously admitted to illegally procuring abortion medication. She aborted her pregnancy when she was 32 to 34 weeks pregnant during the Covid pandemic.

According to the law in England, Scotland and Wales, pregnancies can be terminated only up to the 24th week.

At the time of her sentencing, the court heard that Foster was given abortion pills by the charity British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS). However, it was revealed during the hearing that while obtaining abortion pills, Foster has lied how far along she was in her pregnancy.

"The relief that this woman can go home to be with her children is tempered by the knowledge there are more cases to come where women in England being prosecuted and investigated for having abortions under this archaic legislation," said Stella Creasy, Labour MP, after the Court of Appeals ruling.

A widely known case

Foster's case has been widely discussed, even within the pro-abortion movement in the US. Just last month, thousands of activists held a march from the Royal Courts of Justice to Whitehall and demanded an end to the criminalisation of abortion. The march was organised after Foster's sentencing.

The chief executive of the BPAS has said that she "echoes the judges' statements".

Clare Murphy, the chief executive said the court had "recognised that this cruel, antiquated law does not reflect the values of society today" and urged Parliament to decriminalise abortion as a "matter of urgency". She was quoted by Sky News.

UK: Authorities greenlight road tunnel construction near Stonehenge despite opposition

The United Nations has slammed Britain's illegal migration bill just when it got parliamentary assent on Tuesday (July 18). In a sharp reaction, the UN has said that the bill, which awaits formality of the 'royal assent' to become a law, is against London's obligations under international law. In a joint statement, the UN refugee and human rights chiefs said that the bill "is at variance with the country's obligations under international human rights and refugee law and will have profound consequences for people in need of international protection."

The controversial bill seeks to stop thousands of migrants arriving on British shores in small boats. The bill has cleared its last parliamentary hurdle. The members of the House of Lords, the unelected upper house defeated a string of challenges to the government's Illegal Migration Bill.

The bill is central to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's pledge to "stop the boats".

"This new legislation significantly erodes the legal framework that has protected so many, exposing refugees to grave risks in breach of international law," said UN refugees head Filippo Grandi.

"I urge the UK government to renew this commitment to human rights by reversing this law and ensuring that the rights of all migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers are respected, protected and fulfilled, without discrimination," said UN human rights chief Volker Turk.

The bill, when it becomes a law will mean that anyone arriving by boat will be denied the right to apply for asylum in the UK. As the parliament has passed the bill, it will now await the formality of the "royal assent" from King Charles III.

Transfer to 'safe' country Rwanda

The legislation provides for measures which are seen as a deterrent to migrants. The bill says that all irregular arrivals may be transferred to 'safe' third countries such as Rwanda. This means that a migrant, who may not be from Rwanda, can potentially be transferred there.

In 2022, more than 45,000 migrants arrived on the shores of southeast England in small boats. This was a 60 per cent annual increase in the influx of migrants. The sea route is perilous and has been used by more people since 2018.

Recently, three Court of Appeal judges in the UK ruled that Rwanda cannot be considered a safe third country. The UK government said last month that it would appeal the judgment.

PM Sunak has said he respects the court but "fundamentally" disagrees with the conclusions drawn by the judges.

The United Nations has slammed Britain's illegal migration bill just when it got parliamentary assent on Tuesday (July 18). In a sharp reaction, the UN has said that the bill, which awaits formality of the 'royal assent' to become a law, is against London's obligations under international law. In a joint statement, the UN refugee and human rights chiefs said that the bill "is at variance with the country's obligations under international human rights and refugee law and will have profound consequences for people in need of international protection." The controversial bill seeks to stop thousands of migrants arriving on British shores in small boats. Transfer to 'safe' country Rwanda The legislation provides for measures which are seen as a deterrent to migrants. Till now, no deportation flights to Rwanda have taken place. Rights groups accuse Rwanda -- ruled with an iron fist by President Paul Kagame since the end of the 1994 genocide that killed around 800,000 people -- of cracking down on free speech and opposition. Labour leader Keir Starmer is facing pressure from his own party members over the two-child benefit cap. Starmer announced that he will not scrap the policy if Labour wins power.
Finance executives at top British companies are displaying increasing caution due to concerns over high inflation and rising interest rates. According to a quarterly survey conducted by Deloitte, optimism levels among chief financial officers (CFOs) have sharply declined, resulting in a significant shift in sentiment. CFOs now anticipate a slowdown in hiring and pay growth as they grapple with inflationary pressures and tightening monetary policies.

Key Findings

The Deloitte survey revealed that CFOs' optimism levels decreased by 35 percentage points, from a positive 25 to a negative 10, over the course of three months. Reuters cited Deloitte's chief economist, Ian Stewart, who noted that the initial burst of business optimism seen in the spring has diminished due to inflation and rising interest rates.

Finance leaders of major UK firms expressed concerns regarding tight monetary policies, considering them the greatest threat to their businesses. The cost of credit is perceived to be the highest since the credit crunch in 2009. Geopolitical uncertainties and energy prices, which had dominated concerns in recent years, took a backseat to the perceived impact of monetary policy.

CFOs displayed a preference for employees to spend more time in the office, with a net 50 per cent predicting increased office presence in the next two years. This change in sentiment reflects a shift towards cost reduction and cash control among corporations.

Labour Market and Wage Growth

The survey also highlighted early signs of cooling in the labour market, with CFOs signaling reduced recruitment difficulties and decreased wage growth. The Bank of England, concerned about the pace of wage growth contributing to inflationary pressures, is closely monitoring the labour market ahead of its decision on whether to raise borrowing costs for the 14th consecutive time on August 3.

Focus on Tight Monetary Policy

The Deloitte survey, based on responses from 69 CFOs (including 13 from FTSE 100 firms and 21 from FTSE 250 companies), highlighted the growing significance of tight monetary policy as the primary threat to businesses. This surpasses concerns related to geopolitics and energy prices, which have dominated for the past two years.

Call for Green Growth Opportunities

In a separate report cited by Reuters, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) emphasised the potential for green growth to benefit the UK economy. The CBI estimated that capitalizing on green growth opportunities could boost up to £57 billion ($75 billion), equivalent to 2.4 per cent of GDP, by 2030. The organization urged the government to create a clear and stable policy environment and offer investment incentives to support the realisation of this potential.

CBI Director-General Rain Newton-Smith emphasised the importance of all political parties prioritising green growth in their manifestos as a pivotal general election approach.

A combination of centuries-old pages and modern technology has allowed historians in the United Kingdom to be able to read the first supposedly accurate version and official account of Elizabeth I’s reign. After no one has been able to read the heavily revised and self-censored version of the manuscripts by the 17th-century author for at least 400 years.

How were the pages ‘uncensored’?

The recent imaging technology has allowed the researchers at the British Library to read the hidden pages of William Camden’s Annals for the first time in nearly four centuries.

According to a report by the Guardian, the process of enhanced imaging technology involved transmitting light under the pages in question which were either over-written or concealed beneath pieces of paper stuck down tightly. Therefore, any to separate the paper would have caused the pages to tear and destroy evidence.

The text revealed is expected to offer new insights about the queen and the political schemes of her court. The Annals, which are written in Latin and first published in two parts in 1615 and 1625, are based on first-hand accounts, such as witness reports and official parliamentary records, collected by Camden before his death in 1623, reported the Guardian.

British Library’s lead curator of medieval historical and literary manuscripts, Julian Harrison, told the Guardian how the experience of seeing the unknown passages emerging for the first time was “heart-stopping”.

He added, “The imaging is revolutionary. We’ve never done anything quite like this before. It’s just incredible.”

According to Harrison, the library is in possession of 10 volumes of these “handwritten manuscripts” out of which “literally several hundred pages…[have] passages which had been covered up.”

Why were the pages censored?

“Mordern historians commonly relied on Camden’s Annals as an impartial and supposedly accurate record. This new research reveals that key sections were revised…It implies that Camden’s Annals were deliberately rewritten to present a version of Elizabeth’s reign that was more favourable to her successor,” said Harrison, as quoted by the Guardian.

Speaking about some of the claims, the British Library’s lead curator gave an example of how it is claimed that Elizabeth I had named James VI of Scotland as her successor on her deathbed.

“Elizabeth never married and she died childless in 1603, to be succeeded on the English throne by Mary’s son, James VI of Scotland. Analysis of the manuscript drafts shows that the deathbed scene was a fabricated addition that Camden did not intend originally to put into his history,” Harrison told the Guardian.

It also implies that Camden did not want to offend his patron, King James, who commissioned the Annals. “He presumably included it to appease James, so that his succession looked more predetermined than it had actually been. Elizabeth was too ill to speak in her final hours and no other historical evidence points to this deathbed scene being true,” said the British Library curator, as quoted by the British media report.
