Meanwhile, Ankara has maintained dozens of military bases inside northern Iraq where it regularly launches operations against PKK fighters which has long been outside the direct control of the Baghdad government and has sent commandos to support its offensives.

However, Turkey&nbsp;rarely comments on its strikes against the PKK bases. The alleged strike&nbsp;also comes after four PKK fighters were killed in the same region in a drone strike which was also attributed to Turkey by Iraqi Kurdistan, on July 29.&nbsp;

As per reports, Turkey has stepped up drone attacks in areas controlled by the Kurdish administration in Syria in recent weeks. At the time, a press release by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said that the drone attack targeted a village in the Amuda region, “making martyrs of four fighters in a self-defence group”.&nbsp;

In a statement, the governor’s office in Izmir said the Turkish citizen was from the eastern province of Agri and has been apprehended. An investigation into the incident is underway, it said.

A report by the state broadcaster TRT said that the wounded woman, identified as the secretary at the diplomatic mission, was in critical condition. The attack took place outside Sweden’s honorary consulate, according to local media reports.&nbsp;

"The Danish government will therefore explore the possibility of intervening in special situations where, for instance, other countries, cultures, and religions are being insulted, and where this could have significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security," he said.

"This must of course be done within the framework of the constitutionally protected freedom of expression and in a manner that does not change the fact that freedom of expression in Denmark has a very broad scope," the Danish government said in a statement from the foreign ministry, further stressing it as one of the country's most important values.

Several incidents involving the desecration of the Quran have elevated diplomatic tensions throughout the Middle East with the two Nordic countries. &nbsp;

The Danish government noted that the protests have "reached a level where Denmark, in many parts of the world across continents, is being viewed as a country that facilitates insult and denigration of the cultures, religions, and traditions of other countries."

It added that the "primary purpose" of some of the actions had been to provoke and "could have significant consequences."

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is due to visit Turkey on July 25, whereas Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will arrive in Ankara a few days later. Both leaders will hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

As many as 700,000 TikTok accounts in Turkey had been compromised by a hack, weeks before Turkey's authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdogan managed to gain a slender lead in May re-election, a report in Forbes has claimed. The report said that TikTok was informed about the potential vulnerability a year in advance, but did nothing to fix the issue. The ByteDance-owned company used 'greyrouting' of SMS through insecure channels which allowed non-state actors to allegedly gain access to TikTok accounts. In simple terms, greyrouting means using unsecured channels to send SMS text messages. It is done so to bypass fees established by international telecommunications agreements. In April 2022, UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, a division of the intelligence agency GCHQ, wrote an email to TikTok's security chief Roland Cloutier and warned that 'greyrouting' may allow 'SIM farms' in Russia and other countries to request and intercept one-time passwords to gain access to TikTok users’ accounts. According to internal emails, documents, chat logs and other sources, Cloutier’s team initially acted on the tip and found out that TikTok was indeed using greyrouting to keep costs down, the Forbes report claimed. However, the company decided against applying a fix as it would have cost millions of dollars each month, it said. Erdogan government may have benefitted Although it is not clear who exploited the vulnerability, the Forbes report insinuated that the Erdogan administration may have used the situation to its benefit. "Under Erdogan, the Turkish government has a history of using state-sponsored troll networks to hack and intimidate journalists and other critics." Experts cautioned that without proper information, it was hard to know how significant the breach was, at the time. “This could range from a super advanced spam attack to a state actor. If you’d just told me 700,000 accounts, I’d tell you that’s a Wednesday," said Alex Stamos, former security chief for Facebook. <h2>What was the deal about?</h2>

Turkey and the United Nations&nbsp;managed to broker a landmark deal between Russia and Ukraine&nbsp;in July last year, months after Moscow invaded Kyiv&nbsp;on February 24.&nbsp;

The aim of the pact was to alleviate a global food crisis, exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war, and allow a safe passage for Ukrainian ships carrying grain to be exported through the Black Sea corridor.&nbsp;

Notably, Ukraine is one of the world’s biggest exporters of food grains, such as wheat and corn, and played a significant role in the UN’s food aid programmes. Therefore, when Russia invaded and blocked Ukrainian ports, prices of food grains soared across parts of the world.&nbsp;

The UN-brokered deal allowed cargo ships&nbsp;from three Ukrainian ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi (Yuzhny) to pass through the 310 nautical miles long and three nautical miles wide Black Sea safe passage after being inspected for weapons.&nbsp;

Nearly 33 million metric tonnes of corn, wheat and other grains have been exported by Ukraine under the agreement, reported Reuters, which has been extended <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/black-sea-grain-export-deal-extended-for-120-days-says-ukraine-minister-534980">twice</a> since it was first signed. Kyiv has also contributed 725,200 (2.2 per cent) tonnes to the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

While the Black Sea deal assured that no ships would be attacked entering and leaving the Ukrainian port, a separate agreement also facilitated the movement of Russian food and fertiliser.&nbsp;

<h2>Why did Russia back out of the deal?</h2>

The formal <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-suspends-participation-in-black-sea-grain-deal-616518">suspension</a> comes days after Russian President Vladimir Putin during an interview said “not one” of Moscow’s conditions for the deal to function had been met.&nbsp;

“I want to emphasise that nothing was done, nothing at all. It’s all one-sided,” said Putin. Reportedly, while Moscow’s exports of food grains and fertilisers are not subjected to Western sanctions, Russia has claimed that other restrictions on payments, logistics and insurance have had an indirect effect on its shipments.&nbsp;

"The obligations recorded in the relevant Russia-UN memorandum to remove obstacles to the export of Russian food and fertilisers still remain unfulfilled,” Putin <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russias-putin-discusses-ukraine-grain-deal-brics-summit-with-south-africas-ramaphosa-616065">told</a> his South African counterpart&nbsp;on Saturday, according to a statement by the Kremlin.&nbsp;

Russia has also claimed that not enough grain is being sent to the poor countries, while the UN has argued that the deal had helped those states by lowering food prices by over 20 per cent across the world. Moscow also wanted ammonia exports through a pipeline leading from Russia to the Ukrainian port of Odesa&nbsp;to resume.&nbsp;

Additionally, one of Russia’s key demands has reportedly <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/kremlin-main-goal-of-black-sea-grain-deal-has-not-been-met-616298">not been met</a>. Moscow wanted its Russian Agricultural Bank (Rosselkhozbank) to be reconnected to the SWIFT international payments system after it was cut off due to sanctions by the European Union in June 2022.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters&nbsp;said that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, last week, asked Putin to extend the Black Sea grain deal in exchange for the EU connecting a subsidiary of Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT for grain and fertiliser transactions.&nbsp;

The same media report, citing three sources said, officials in the EU were also in the midst of considering reconnecting SWIFT to a subsidiary of the Rosselkhozbank. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric had also confirmed a proposal by the UN chief saying that this was a “major concern expressed by the Russian Federation…”

<h2>Any immediate effects of the suspension?</h2>

According to reports, prices of grains and oilseeds have already risen in response to Russia’s decision and are expected to lead to higher prices for staple foods like bread, pasta, etc, in the upcoming weeks or months.&nbsp;

But the rise is not as significant.&nbsp;“I think there is a market belief that Russia and the EU have large supplies of wheat which can meet world demand in the coming months, with harvests arriving,” a German grains trader told Reuters.&nbsp;

The high costs may also exacerbate economic challenges for several countries and push millions more into poverty or food insecurity. The WFP used to purchase millions of tonnes of grain from Kyiv before the Ukraine war, mostly for African and West Asian countries.&nbsp;

Ukraine exported 16.9 million tonnes of corn and 8.9 million tonnes of wheat, due to the grain deal with Russia. Amid this uncertainty, it was also not immediately clear whether Ukraine will be able to continue exporting grain after the Russian withdrawal from the pact.&nbsp;

Another option could include increasing Ukrainian grain exports through eastern EU countries which have already risen exponentially since the conflict began.

However, there have been logistical challenges, in addition to unrest among farmers who said it has undercut local supplies.&nbsp;Since then the EU has allowed five countries&nbsp;to ban domestic sales of some Ukrainian grains and seeds&nbsp;but allow transit.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine ready to export grains despite Russian exit: Zelensky</h2>

Ukrainian President&nbsp;Volodymyr Zelensky, in response to&nbsp;Russia’s decision, said that Kyiv is&nbsp;prepared to continue grain exports despite Moscow's backing out of the deal.&nbsp; 
 
“Even without the Russian Federation, everything must be done so that we can use this Black Sea corridor. We are not afraid. We have been approached by companies that own ships. They said that they are ready”&nbsp;to continue shipments, Zelensky said&nbsp;as per his&nbsp;spokesperson,&nbsp;Sergiy Nykyforov.&nbsp;

<h2>Is it because of Crimea bridge attack?</h2>

The Kremlin&nbsp;suspension came hours after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/live-updates-russia-ukraine-war-crimea-bridge-attack-616454">Crimea Bridge</a>, a very crucial and only direct link between the Russian mainland and the Moscow-annexed Crimean peninsula, was attacked.&nbsp;

The bridge is also important for the supply of fuel, food and now weapons to Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the decision to not renew the Black Sea grain deal was unrelated to the overnight attack, which he called a “terrorist act” and blamed on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ukrainian-official-seemingly-claims-responsibility-for-crimea-bridge-blast-613657">Ukraine</a>.&nbsp;

“Unfortunately, the part of these Black Sea agreements concerning Russia has not been implemented so far, so its effect is terminated,” said Peskov. He added, “As soon as the Russian part of the agreements is fulfilled, the Russian side will return to the implementation of this deal, immediately.”&nbsp;

<h2>Putin wants to continue the deal: Erdogan</h2>

German government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann said they will continue to “call on Russia to allow further extension of the grain deal,” adding that the “conflict should not be carried out on the backs of the poorest on this planet.”&nbsp;

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson called Russia’s decision “disappointing” and accused Russia of risking global “suffering".&nbsp;Moscow “will be robbing millions of people of access to vital grain,” said the UK.&nbsp;

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen “strongly condemned” Russia’s move and dubbed it “cynical”. She added, “EU is working to ensure food security for the world’s vulnerable.”&nbsp;

South Africa’s Deputy President Paul Mashatile, in an interview with the weekly newspaper Mail &amp; Guardian, said Russia rejected their request to not send Putin.&nbsp;

According to the media report, South Africa had suggested Moscow send Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to lead Russia’s delegation on August 22-24, instead of Putin.&nbsp;

Additionally, BRICS members, Brazil, India, China and South Africa opposed holding the summit virtually, said Mashatile.

Moscow is yet to make a decision about the extension of the grain deal which expires on Monday and has enabled Ukraine to export grain from its Black Sea ports amid its conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

It’s all one-sided,” Putin said in a televised interview, adding: “We will think about what to do, we have a few more days.”

Recent statements have indicated that Russia might pull out of the UN-brokered deal struck a year ago. The UN spokesperson, on Friday, said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is still waiting for an answer on his proposal to extend the grain deal.&nbsp;

“Discussions are being had, WhatsApp messages are being sent, Signal messages are being sent and exchanged. We’re also waiting for a response to the letter,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.&nbsp;

Erdogan, on Monday, asserted that many of the same leaders who were blockading Turkey's EU membership now wanted him to support Sweden's candidacy.

“I would like to underline one reality. Turkey has been waiting at the EU’s front door for 50 years,” Erdogan said.

"Almost all the NATO members are EU members. I now am addressing these countries, which are making Turkey wait for more than 50 years, and I will address them again in Vilnius," Erdogan said moments before boarding his flight for the summit in the Lithuanian capital.

"First, open the way to Turkey's membership of the European Union, and then we will open it for Sweden, just as we had opened it for Finland."

Turkey will back Sweden's NATO bid if EU membership bid progresses, says Erdogan

The United States on Monday backed Turkey's bid to enter the European Union but said that Erdogan shouldn't link it to the acceptance of Sweden's entry into NATO, news agency AFP reported citing a senior American official.

"The United States has for a number of years supported Turkey's EU aspirations and we continue to do so," said State Department spokesman Matt Miller.

"However, we do not believe that it should be an impediment to Sweden's accession to NATO," Miller said.

Miller stressed that the United States has no role in EU decisions on its membership, saying: "Ultimately, that's a matter between the European Union and Turkey."

However, he said that the expansion of NATO to include Sweden was of prominence to Washington.

He highlighted that the United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan three times in the last six days, further adding that US President Joe Biden had a telephonic conversation with Erdogan on Sunday.

Sweden has met Ankara's demands to gain its approval for entering NATO, Miller said.

"We believe that Sweden has addressed them and, as I said, we think it's time to move to full membership," he added.&nbsp;

"However, we do not believe that it should be an impediment to Sweden's accession to NATO," Miller said. However, he said that the expansion of NATO to include Sweden was of prominence to Washington. EU chief Charles Michel and Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on Monday to seek closer cooperation after the Turkish leader demanded a return to European Union membership talks.

The pair met in Vilnius on the eve of a NATO summit, after Erdogan declared that Turkey would not approve Sweden's bid to join the alliance without a revival of Ankara's EU ambitions.

In a tweet, Michel hailed a "good meeting", adding that they had "explored opportunities ahead to bring EU-Turkey cooperation back to the forefront and re-energise our relations."

Turkey has been a formal candidate to join the European Union since 2005, and an aspirant since long before that, but talks have long been stalled with little sign of life.

Separately, NATO member Turkey has been blocking Sweden's attempt to join the military alliance, accusing Stockholm of harbouring Kurdish activists accused by Ankara of terrorism.

On Monday, in a surprise move ahead of Tuesday's NATO summit, Erdogan linked the two diplomatic logjams, demanding that the NATO allies that are also EU members clear Turkey's path.

The US president’s visit to London&nbsp;comes ahead of the NATO summit on July 11-12. Prior to his departure for his multi-nation tour, the White House said the trip was designed “to further strengthen the close relationship between our nations”.&nbsp;

Biden departed for Britain from the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Sunday. He will meet King Charles III and UK PM Rishi Sunak after which he will fly to Vilnius for the NATO summit. The last stop on his tour&nbsp;will be to the new member of the US-led alliance, Finland.

<h2>Biden’s visit to the UK</h2>

During his visit to Britain, the US president will meet the British PM, at Downing Street, on Monday in a low-key meeting where the two leaders are expected to discuss the upcoming NATO summit and the war in Ukraine.

The incumbent British PM has also somewhat repaired ties that had cooled under his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss due to their tough stance over a post-Brexit deal with the European Union.&nbsp;

“The UK is Europe’s leading NATO ally, we are the United States’ most important trade, defence and diplomatic partner, and we are at the forefront of providing Ukraine with the support they need to succeed on the battlefield,” said Sunak, in a statement ahead of Biden’s visit.

According to the British monarch’s office, Biden will be received by King Charles III at Windsor Castle’s quadrangle where a guard of honour will give a Royal Salute and the US national anthem will be played.&nbsp;

The statement from the Turkish presidency said that Biden and Erdogan also held a call where they discussed Sweden’s NATO bid. Following the call, the US president said, Erdogan “still wants to work on something on the F-16s. I told him we wanted a deal with Sweden, so let’s get that done.”&nbsp;

However, the Turkish president reiterated his longstanding position, on Sunday, about Sweden’s perceived lax attitude toward alleged Kurdish militants living there and that Stockholm needed to crack down harder.&nbsp;

The NATO-organised talks between the two countries will take place a day, on Monday, ahead of the military alliance’s leadership summit in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. “On Tuesday in the leadership summit to be held in Vilnius, we will be discussing (Turkey’s concerns) with our partners. We will make the best decision, whatever it is,” said Erdogan.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, NATO chief Stoltenberg, on Friday said there are still “gaps” to be bridged between Turkey and Sweden before the former can give its go ahead for the latter’s membership bid. Addressing a press conference ahead of next week’s summit, Stoltenberg said again he would meet Swedish and Turkish leaders a day before the gathering officially starts on July 11-12.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky about Ukraine, Sweden's bid to join NATO</h2>

The Ukrainian president who is in the midst of visiting several NATO states, drummed up support for its membership bid. Zelensky travelled to the Czech Republic and Slovakia a day after holding talks in Bulgaria. He is also due to visit Istanbul and meet his Turkish counterpart, later on Friday.&nbsp;

While he was in Slovakia, Zelensky on Friday called on NATO to resolve the issue of Sweden and Ukraine’s membership bid and said that the indecision is a “threat” to global security. “I think there is not enough unity on this,” said Zelensky, during a press conference. He added, “This is a threat to the strength of the alliance…is (also) very important for the security of the whole world.”&nbsp;

Kyiv is also expecting some “positive results or at least some steps towards the positive outcome” from the upcoming summit in Vilnius, said the Ukrainian president. Zelensky also said the “situation with the aggressor, with Russia depends on this,” as Moscow is “counting on the world to show weakness and disunity in the Alliance, and this cannot be allowed.”&nbsp;

Zelensky has won a pledge of support for Ukraine to join NATO “as soon as the war (with Russia) is over,” from the Czech Republic. Additionally, Slovakia said the question of Kyiv’s membership was “when,” not “if”.&nbsp;

This comes as Stoltenberg reiterated that Ukraine would become a member but the alliance remains divided over how fast should Kyiv’s inclusion happen while others are concerned about provoking Russia. While Zelensky has acknowledged that they cannot join the alliance while the war with Russia is still going on, Kyiv needs “a clear signal, some concrete things in the direction of an invitation,” said the Ukrainian president, on Thursday.&nbsp;

Zelensky travelled to the Czech Republic and Slovakia a day after holding talks in Bulgaria. He is also due to visit Istanbul and meet his Turkish counterpart, later on Friday. While he was in Slovakia, Zelensky on Friday called on NATO to resolve the issue of Sweden and Ukraine’s membership bid and said that the indecision is a “threat” to global security. “I think there is not enough unity on this,” said Zelensky, during a press conference. He added, “This is a threat to the strength of the alliance…is (also) very important for the security of the whole world.” Kyiv is also expecting some “positive results or at least some steps towards the positive outcome” from the upcoming summit in Vilnius, said the Ukrainian president. Zelensky also said the “situation with the aggressor, with Russia depends on this,” as Moscow is “counting on the world to show weakness and disunity in the Alliance, and this cannot be allowed.” Zelensky has won a pledge of support for Ukraine to join NATO “as soon as the war (with Russia) is over,” from the Czech Republic. Additionally, Slovakia said the question of Kyiv’s membership was “when,” not “if”. This comes as Stoltenberg reiterated that Ukraine would become a member but the alliance remains divided over how fast should Kyiv’s inclusion happen while others are concerned about provoking Russia. While Zelensky has acknowledged that they cannot join the alliance while the war with Russia is still going on, Kyiv needs “a clear signal, some concrete things in the direction of an invitation,” said the Ukrainian president, on Thursday.
