Animal lovers in the southern Turkish city of Diyarbakir are protesting the demolition of a building. The building, as per an AFP report, is believed to contain several animals and the protestors are pushing for the removal of the stuck animals before the building is demolished for reconstruction. The series of quakes in Turkey&nbsp;and&nbsp;Syria has claimed more than 45,000 lives and has battered huge amounts of infrastructure, many of which are now being cleared to make way for reconstruction. Talking to AFP, Nilay Yilmaz, one of the protestors said "We only had one request: we said 'let us at least go in'... They didn't let us do that either."

The protestors have reportedly been told that the "building would collapse if a crane touched it." However, Yilmaz says that "since 8:00 am they've been cutting at it with that machinery, but the building is still standing."

"What kind of a Muslim country are we?" asked one protester. "These are living beings too, they can take them out as well," he added.

Turkey's Bar Association has also called on the state to rescue the stuck animals.&nbsp;

"While we were waiting for these animals to be rescued, demolition work started in the building, even though it was known that there were live animals inside."&nbsp;

"These animals, which were not killed by the earthquake and not killed by hunger and thirst for 16 days, started to be killed by human hands...all living things have an equal right to life," it said.

After protestors gathered around the building in question, Police cordoned it off. Citing an anonymous source, AFP reports that the police will attempt to lure the animals out during overnight hours, however, the demolition will resume on Thursday irrespective of the animals' presence inside the building.

In a piece of heartbreaking news, the agent of Ghana footballer Christian Atsu confirmed that the former Newcastle United player has been found dead under the Turkey earthquake rubble at his collapsed home. The Ghanaian player Christian&nbsp;Atsu had been missing since the February 6 earthquake which hit Turkey as many commercial buildings and apartments, including the apartment of the 31-year-old player in Antakya, Hatay, had collapsed.

Later, it was reported he has been found alive in&nbsp;the rubble but now the latest news from his agent confirms that the player lost his life in the catastrophic earthquake.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Newcastle was eagerly awaiting word of Atsu and had tweeted a message filled with hope then but the heartbreaking news now had dawned sadness on everyone.&nbsp;

UN relief chief Martin Griffiths said that the death toll of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria may increase to&nbsp;50,000.&nbsp;On Saturday, Griffiths visited the southern city of Kahramanmaras in Turkey, which was the epicentre of the first earthquake of 7.8-magnitude that upturned the lives of millions in Monday's pre-dawn hours.&nbsp;Speaking to Sky News, Griffiths said, “I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble but I'm sure it will double or more. We haven't really begun to count the number of dead.”

According to officials, the death toll currently stands at 34,000. Since six days have passed, there is less probability of people under the debris being found alive.&nbsp;

<h2>Police detain around 130 contractors over collapsed buildings</h2>

According to the state media, police in quake-hit Turkey have detained around 130&nbsp;contractors after multiple buildings collapsed in the country's south-eastern provinces of Sanliurfa and Gaziantep.

As per the DHA news agency, the people taken into custody includes contractors. Around 6,000 buildings collapsed in the devastating earthquakes that hit the region on Monday, sparking anger in the public over the poor quality of construction.

Police officials are expected to detain more people after Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay on Saturday said that 113 arrest warrants have been issued by the prosecutors over the collapse&nbsp;of buildings.

One of the persons detained was a contractor for a collapsed building in Gaziantep, said the agency, adding that the police caught him in Istanbul.

A wave of investigations has been launched by the prosecutors in provinces which have been hit, including Kahramanmaras. The justice ministry has asked the prosecutors to set up special "earthquake crimes investigation offices" in the 10 provinces.

On Friday, another contractor was apprehended by the Turkish police after the high-rise luxury flats, he was associated with, had collapsed in Hatay province.

The police detained him at Istanbul airport when&nbsp;he was trying to flee the country, reports suggested.

<h2>Miracle rescues as toll climbs</h2>

On Saturday, an elderly woman and a two-month-old baby were rescued from the rubble. Thousands of rescue workers are still searching for survivors in flattened neighbourhoods even as the misery of the survivors escalates amid&nbsp;freezing&nbsp;weather. However, amid despair, loss and destruction, stories of miraculous survival continue to emerge.

The rescue workers found a two-month-old baby alive in the city of Antakya, 128 hours after the quake, reported state news agency Anadolu.

Meanwhile, families held each other tightly in grief, as a cotton field was transformed into a cemetery as countless bodies arrived for burial.

Meanwhile, outbreaks of violence in southern Turkey hampered the ongoing rescue operations to find survivors. The search operations were paused by the Austrian army and German rescuers on Saturday, because of fighting between unidentified groups.

Austrian army spokesperson Lt Col Pierre Kugelweis said that altercations between factions in the Hatay province forced the Austrian Forces Disaster Relief Unit's personnel to take shelter in a base camp along with other international organisations.

In a statement, Kugelweis said, “There is increasing aggression between factions in Turkey. The chances of saving a life bears no reasonable relation to the safety risk.”

Turkish Ministry of Defence confirmed that the rescue operation was resumed by Austria after protection was provided by the Turkish army.

Operations were also suspended by Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief (TSW) and the German branch of the search and rescue group Isar, citing similar security concerns.

Isar spokesperson Stefan Heine said, “There are more and more reports of clashes between different factions, shots have also been fired.”

German rescue teams confirmed that the rescue work will be resumed as soon as the situation is declared safe by the Turkish authorities.

The seventh "Operation Dost" aircraft, carrying more than 23 tonnes of relief aid, landed in earthquake-stricken Syria. As per schedule the IAF aircraft first landed in Syria, unloaded its supplies there, then flew to Turkey with emergency and critical care medicines, and other humanitarian supplies. The external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, also mentioned the airplane leaving Ghaziabad on his Twitter account.

He tweeted, "The 7th #OperationDost flight departs for Syria and Turkey. Flight is carrying relief material, medical aid, emergency &amp; critical care medicines, medical equipment &amp; consumables."

The Indian Army also tweeted, "An #IAF C-17 aircraft got airborne last night for #Syria and #Turkiye, bearing relief material and emergency equipment."

The aid being sent for Syria comprises relief materials, sleeping mats, gensets, solar lamps, tarpaulins, blankets, emergency and critical care medicines, and disaster relief consumables, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

A massive earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.&nbsp;The death toll from the quakes that hit southeastern Turkiye and northern Syria stood at 33,179 on Sunday. The United Nations (UN) has estimated a combined total death toll of 50,000.&nbsp;

In response to the terrible earthquakes and aftershocks that struck the area, India initiated Operation Dost to provide aid to Turkey and Syria.

India is providing Turkey and Syria with a significant amount of humanitarian assistance as part of "Operation Dost".

In Istanbul's Beykoz district, six suspects were arrested for deceiving an earthquake victim in southern Gaziantep, over&nbsp;telephone.

According to reports, the suspects, posing themselves as telecommunications workers, said they could help the victim if he provides his personal banking information.

An Indian national who was missing since the earthquakes hit Turkey, on February 6, was found dead on Saturday (February 11) under the rubble of a hotel he was staying in. The Indian embassy in Turkey confirmed that the body of the victim, Vijay Kumar Gaud was found in the debris of a hotel in Malatya where he was on a business trip.&nbsp; 
 
According to reports citing officials, the victim’s face was injured beyond recognition and the body was identified by his family by the tattoo of the word “Om” on his hand. “We inform with sorrow that the mortal remains of Shri Vijay Kumar, an Indian national missing in Turkiye since February 6 earthquake, have been found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya, where he was on a business trip,” said the Indian embassy in Turkey, in a tweet.&nbsp;

Kumar was sent to Turkey for installing and commissioning an acetylene gas plant in Malatya, as per media reports, and secured his visa by mid-January.&nbsp;According to family sources quoting Indian embassy officials, Gaud’s mortal remains will first be flown to Istanbul and then taken to Delhi, and it may take some three days for his body to reach Uttarakhand, reported PTI.&nbsp;

Turkey is known to be prone to earthquakes, lying as it does at the junction of three tectonic plates, Eurasian, Arabian and African. These plates move a couple of centimetres (approx. 1 inch) every year. Two tectonic plates can move away from each other, toward each other or sometimes up against each other, causing the continent above them to move. These movements are called plate tectonics which is the cause of an earthquake.&nbsp;

<h2>Why do earthquakes happen?</h2>

One of the major causes of an earthquake is a slip along a fault, which is a junction between two tectonic plates. Such earthquakes are called inter-plate earthquakes. Another cause is the movement of tectonic plates; such earthquakes are called an intra-plate earthquakes.&nbsp; 
When two plates grind against each other, a large amount of pressure builds up. When this pressure becomes too great, it is released in the form of an earthquake. The shaking caused by the release of energy travels through the Earth's surface, causing the ground to shake. This movement of the Earth's surface can cause damage to buildings, roads, and other structures.

<h2>How earthquakes are recorded?</h2>

Earthquakes are recorded using an instrument called a seismograph and the recording that they make is called a seismogram. The seismograph has a base that sets firmly on the ground and a heavy weight that hangs free. When an earthquake causes the ground to shake, the base of the seismograph shakes too, but the hanging weight does not. Instead, the spring or strings that are hanging from above absorbs all the movement. This difference in position between the shaking part of the seismograph and the motionless part is what is recorded.

Turkey is located on the Anatolian tectonic plate, which is wedged between the Eurasian and African plates. On the north side, the minor Arabian plate further restricts movement. One fault line, the North Anatolian fault (NAF) line, the meeting point of the Eurasian and Anatolian tectonic plates, is known to be “particularly devastating”. The NAF, one of the best-understood fault systems in the world, stretches from the south of Istanbul to northeastern Turkey and has caused catastrophic earthquakes in the past.

Earthquake in Turkey, Syria: Why earthquakes happen, how are they measured, what makes Turkey earthquake-prone

India's&nbsp;National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams conducting rescue and operations in earthquake-hit Turkey will be aided by Indian eyes-in-the-sky, in the form of indigenous drones. Based on a formal request from the NDRF, Chennai-based drone firm Garuda Aerospace has mobilised two drones for catering to airborne surveillance, thermal imaging, and delivery of essential goods to hard-to-reach locations. The drones are being flown to Turkey on an aircraft of the Indian Air Force and are expected to reach the destination late at night, Indian time.

Speaking to WION, Garuda Aerospace CEO &amp; Founder Agnishwar Jayaprakash&nbsp;said that their lightest drone 'Droni' would be utilised for surveillance in the most affected areas. They will help&nbsp;identify locations where victims could be trapped under rubble. In addition to this, their heavier drone — 'Kisan Drone' — would help in carrying medicines, emergency supplies and food for the victims.&nbsp;

Garuda Aerospace's 'Kisan Drone' recently received type certification and Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO) approval from the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The company said that they were the first in the country to get these approvals.

The firm had earlier deployed its drones for rescue and relief operations in several parts of India, including the Chamoli glacier&nbsp;burst at Uttarakhand, and locust control operation in Rajasthan. During the pandemic, these drones were also used to deliver medicines and vaccines to hospitals.

India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams conducting rescue and operations in earthquake-hit Turkey will be aided by Indian eyes-in-the-sky, in the form of indigenous drones. Based on a formal request from the NDRF, Chennai-based drone firm Garuda Aerospace has mobilised two drones for catering to airborne surveillance, thermal imaging, and delivery of essential goods to hard-to-reach locations. The drones are being flown to Turkey on an aircraft of the Indian Air Force and are expected to reach the destination late at night, Indian time. Speaking to WION, Garuda Aerospace CEO & Founder Agnishwar Jayaprakash said that their lightest drone 'Droni' would be utilised for surveillance in the most affected areas. They will help identify locations where victims could be trapped under rubble. Garuda Aerospace's made-in-India drones to aid New Delhi's rescue efforts in Turkey

In the aftermath of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, India responded with humanitarian assistance to both nations. Around 8,000 people have been feared dead in one of the most devastating tremors in the countries’ history.

India has sent four C-17 aircraft carrying over 108 tonnes of relief material, equipment, and rescue personnel to Turkey. Apart from that, 100 personnel and self-contained search and rescue units from the National Disaster Response Force equipped with specialised tools for collapsed structure search and rescue operations have also been dispatched.

India has also sent a 30-bed medical facility to Turkiye, with 99 personnel and medical equipment, including X-ray machines, ventilators, and ambulances.

Speaking to WION on Tuesday, Türkiye Ambassador to India Firat Sunel said, "PM Narendra Modi gave immediate instructions to build a crisis centre and all relevant Indian authorities had a meeting. I was also there for cooperation, and this is an example of good friendship, and we really appreciate it so much."

Besides Turkey, India has sent over six (6) tonnes of relief material to Syria, including emergency use medicines and essential medical items. The relief supplies, transported on a C130J aircraft, also include general and protective gear and equipment such as ECG machines and monitors.

The Syrian Ambassador also spoke to WION and appreciated the Indian support. "The fast, good, generous response by the Government of India is really unique.”&nbsp;

India’s junior foreign minister V Muraleedharan had visited the embassies of both countries in Delhi and extended condolences on behalf of the Indian government.

India's quick response to the crisis highlights its commitment to supporting disaster-stricken communities and providing crucial aid to those in need.
