Recent days have witnessed tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The already-strained relationship was exacerbated when Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah&nbsp;proclaimed that Pakistan may target Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts on Afghanistan soil.&nbsp;

Predictably, the Taliban&nbsp;rule in Afghanistan did not take the remark lightly, and warned Pakistan that its officials should "use caution" while speaking.

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said the group would not allow anyone to attack the Islamic Emirate, adding that the nation wants good relations with Pakistan and that such "baseless talks and provocative ideas" are not in the interest of any side.

White House spokesperson Ned Price remarked that the Taliban has been "unable or unwilling" to fulfil its commitment and called on the group to "uphold the very commitment they have made to see to it that Afghan soil is never again used as a launchpad for international terrorist attacks".

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Wednesday threatened to target the top leaders of the two major political parties PPP and PML-N if they continued to support tough measures against the militants.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Tuesday (January 3) that his government will not hold talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or any other terrorist organisation. This comes as Pakistan has seen a series of deadly attacks by the TTP in recent times after the group ended a ceasefire with Islamabad. &nbsp;

According to a report by Geo News, Sanaullah said the above decision was taken in a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC). Sanaullah said that the Pakistani government had decided to share evidence with the Taliban administration (in Afghanistan) as terrorists based in Afghanistan were involved in terror activities in Pakistan.&nbsp;

He said that Afghanistan promised that its territory would not be used against any other country, and the Taliban administration would be asked to fulfil that promise, the report said.

During the NSC meeting, army chief General Asim Munir categorically said that mixed messages should not be given on the issue of negotiations with terrorists, the narrative should be clear that there will be no negotiations with terrorists. &nbsp;

The Pakistani Interior Minister also said that talks will be held with the Taliban administration and pointed out that no Pakistani territory is under the control of terrorists.&nbsp;

Last week, Rana Sanaullah said that the government would target TTP hideouts in Afghanistan. The Taliban sharply reacted to the Pakistani minister's remark by asking Islamabad to avoid baseless talks and provocative ideas.&nbsp;

"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants peaceful relations with all its neighbouring countries, including Pakistan and believes in all the ways that can lead to achieving this goal," Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement which was put out on Twitter. Mujahid said it was regrettable that Pakistan's officials were making false statements about Kabul. The spokesperson added that the Taliban was trying its best not to use the territory of Afghanistan against Pakistan or any other country.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan and especially in the past couple of months, Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in terrorism incidents mostly in the Khyber Pkahtwnka and Balochistan.

According to the statistics by an Islamabad-based think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), compared to November in December 2022 the number of militant attacks increased by 44 per cent.

Responding to Rana, as per Geo TV, Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said that they would not allow anyone to attack Afghanistan, adding that the nation wants good relations with Pakistan and Islamabad's officials should use caution while speaking.

The Taliban on Monday taunted Pakistan and warned of a befitting response after the country’s interior minister Rana Sanaullah hinted at a possible military operation against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts in Afghanistan.

Taliban leader and deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Yasir mocked Pakistan by sharing a photo on Twitter of Islamabad surrendering to India after the 1971 war that led to the formation of Bangladesh.

“Interior Minister of Pakistan! Excellent Sir! Afghanistan, Syria and Pakistan are not Turkey to target the Kurds in Syria. This is Afghanistan, the graveyard of proud empires. Do not think of a military attack on us, otherwise, there will be a shameful repetition of the military agreement with India," Yasir said.

Later in the day, Afghanistan’s defence ministry issued a statement refuting the claims of the Pakistani interior ministry that there are hideouts of TTP inside Afghanistan, terming it “false and provocative”.

“In the past, such provocative statements and claims have damaged the relationship between the two countries. We call on Pakistan to share its concerns with the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan (IEA) and resolve the matter through dialogue,” the statement issued by the IEA’s interim Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoub stated.

“Afghanistan is not ownerless or without any heirs and like always, is ready to defend its country and the territorial security and its freedom. Any attempt of aggression perpetrated towards Afghanistan will be responded to befittingly. We are well prepared to respond to any offensive,” the statement added.

In a recent interview to a Pakistani news channel, the minister had said Islamabad may target the TTP in Afghanistan if Kabul does not take eliminate them.

Taliban, which the Pakistani government supports in one way or another, has been secretly supporting TTP terrorists as well. Experts are of the view that by allowing the Taliban and TTP to grow, Pakistan is effectively setting itself up for the same fate as Afghanistan. The military offensive is perhaps the last roll of the dice by the Pakistani government to stop the TTP before it grows into an even more sinister threat. In a major escalation of tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, on Sunday, rocket fire from the Afghanistan Taliban forces at a border crossing with Pakistan led to the death of six civilians while another two dozen were reportedly injured.

The firing near the town of Chaman in Balochistan province, as per the Pakistani military resulted in the death of six civilians. Additionally, more than a dozen were wounded by the &nbsp;"unprovoked and indiscriminate fire" said the statement.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a statement on Twitter demanded that "the Afghan Interim government should ensure that such incidents are not repeated."

Confirming the incident, the Pakistani military reported that they have taken a "befitting albeit measured response against the uncalled for aggression" adding that they have avoided "targeting innocent civilians in the area."&nbsp;

"Pakistan has also approached Afghan authorities at Kabul to highlight (the) severity of the situation and demanded strict action to obviate any such recurrence of the incident in future."&nbsp;

Reportedly the clash happened after Afghan Taliban forces tried to cut a part of the border fence said a senior provincial official while speaking with AFP.

Afghani security sources said that the clash started after Pakistan forces demanded that Afghan forces stop building a check post on their side of the border.

However, an Afghan official Noor Ahmad as per Reuters claimed that the incident was accidental and the situation is normal following talks between the two sides.

The Pakistan-Afghanistan border Chaman as per an IANS report has been closed following the incident. In November it was closed for eight days and was only opened on November 21.

Since the Taliban took over the nation in August 2021, border tensions between Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan have risen.&nbsp;

Islamabad alleges that the Taliban is harbouring members of the Pakistani militant group &nbsp;Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) &nbsp;who are planning an attack from the Afghan side. However, the Taliban has denied these claims.

Reportedly there has been a 51 per cent increase in attacks on Pakistan, and on November 28, the group ended a ceasefire with Pakistan and resumed attacks on the country.

The Pakistan government is reworking its strategy to tackle terrorist activities being carried out by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) after the ceasefire agreement was called off by the militant group and attacks were resumed on the government's security forces on Thursday, as per a media report.

The government signed the ceasefire deal in June with TTP, which has been fighting for the establishment of Sharia rule across the nation. On Tuesday, the TTP called off the peace deal accusing the Pakistan government of carrying out Intelligence Based Operations (IBO) against the militant group and not abiding by the terms and agreements. 
 
TTP, within 24 hours of breaking the truce, took the responsibility for a suicide blast that took place in the Balelli area in Quetta. The Express Tribune newspaper was informed by an official source that Pakistan will review its strategy after TTP made an announcement, earlier this week, to call off the truce and increased the terrorist attacks.

According to the source, the National Security Committee (NSC) is likely to convene a meeting to decide on the new strategy. The Afghan Taliban regime brokered the truce, as it continued to resist any kind of pressure from the Pakistan government to take action against the militant group and its affiliates. 
 
The source informed that the government will now look into all options to tackle militancy after TTP's resurgence. Newly-appointed Army Chief General Asim Munir has a clear understanding of Afghanistan and the TTP and is likely to provide crucial input on the TTP's strategy review along with the Taliban-led Afghanistan to the Pakistan government, headed by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Senior commander Abdul Wali, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, who carried a bounty of $3 million, was travelling with senior commanders of the militant group in the Birmal district of the Patrika province, which borders Pakistan, when their vehicle hit a roadside mine.

According to Associated Press, Khorasani's vehicle was reportedly struck on Sunday night in a targeted IED attack.

The Taliban confirmed the killing on Monday and ordered an investigation of the incident.

Omar and a majority of the TTP members from Mohmand agency had parted ways with the TTP and formed a splinter group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat Ahrar (TTP-JA) in 2014 after he accused the leadership of deviating from the outfit’s ideology.

The TTP leader's killing is being seen as a major blow to the group, especially at a time when it is involved in peace talks with the Pakistani government.
