Los Angeles police chief has said that in addition to Amazon packages, dozens of guns have been looted by thieves who have been breaking into train wagons.

Images of the detritus left behind by thieves who broke&nbsp;into stationary wagons in the middle of the second biggest city in the United States swept the internet this month.

Now the city's top policeman has said that the bandits got away with more than just Amazon packages.

"People were... breaking into these containers and stealing firearms, tens of firearms," Michael Moore told the Police Commission this week.

"That gave us great concern as a source again of further violence in the city."

An AFP team filmed thousands of gutted boxes on the stretch of tracks near the city center, many from major retailers like Target, and being shipped by carriers including UPS and FedEx.

The thieves wait until the long freight trains stop on the tracks and break the locks with bolt cutters.&nbsp;

They then help themselves to parcels, ditching anything too difficult to sell.

The haul could include anything that moves around the country from or to retailers.

And, the police now say, guns.

Firearms purchased online in the United States cannot legally be shipped to the customer, but can be sent instead to a licensed dealer for pick-up.

Since December 2020, rail operator Union Pacific (UP), whose convoys are being targeted, has seen a 160 percent increase in thefts in Los Angeles County.

"In October 2021 alone, the increase reaches 356 percent compared to October 2020," the operator said in a letter to local authorities seen by AFP.&nbsp;

The phenomenon was accelerated in the run-up to Christmas, as freight volumes rocketed.

According to figures reported by UP, more than 90 containers were vandalized on average each day in Los Angeles County in the last quarter of 2021.

The operator, which manages nearly 280 miles (450 kilometers) of track in Los Angeles County, puts the cost of the damage incurred over the course of 2021 at about $5 million.

The public prosecutor's office in a statement to CNN said, "It appears that a young man, after walking back and forth on the platform, pushed a woman on the metro tracks as a metro was approaching the station."

By the time the police arrived, the victim had already been rescued by witnesses and the attacker fled along the tracks. However, he was stopped after some time at the Brouckere station.

He has now been placed in the custody of the Brussels public prosecutor.

The investigation is still ongoing to determine the motive of the attacker.

A knife and fire attack that took place on a train in Tokyo on Sunday has injured at least nine people. Local police officers have now detained one man in relation to this incident.<o:p></o:p>

North Korea recently said that it successfully launched ballistic missiles from a train for the first time and was continuing to bolster its defences, after the two Koreas test-fired missiles.

Luis Hernandez, whose father was also among the dead, said that he wanted "justice&nbsp;for my mother, because my father was the breadwinner of the household."

Mexico City&nbsp;Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told a news conference that Norwegian engineering company DNV, which has been tasked with helping prosecutors with the investigation, would carry out "a root cause analysis" of the accident.

The&nbsp;metro&nbsp;system's budget is based on an annual projection of ticket sales and contributions from the government.

"Given the pandemic, there was a reduction associated with the fall in its own income," said Sheinbaum, a close ally of Lopez Obrador.

"The government had to make an additional subsidy to the&nbsp;subway," she told reporters.

The accident comes just a month before June 6 midterm legislative elections in which Lopez Obrador's party aims to retain control of the lower house of Congress.

Almost a day after a train collision in Egypt, the death toll has been revised down to 19, from an earlier number of at least 32.

On Thursday, two trains collided in southern Egypt as a result of which three carriages derailed in the province of Sohag.

He added that the Prime Minister has said that India has become a model for the world when the transition to renewable energy is mentioned. Today, every willing citizen has access to power at affordable prices. "We have invested deeply in the transmission sector for widespread availability of sector. I do hope the states support us to make power 24x7 available at affordable prices," said Goyal. "Renewable energy is the way forward. Dependency on fossil fuel is not viable. The bookings can only be made online through the official website of Indian Railways (IRCTC):&nbsp;(https://www.irctc.co.in/) . Passengers will be able to book tickets online from 4pm on May 11, i.e. on Monday.

"Ticket booking counters at the railway stations shall remain closed and no counter &nbsp;tickets (including platform tickets) shall be issued. Only passengers with valid confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the railway stations. &nbsp;It will be mandatory for the passengers to wear face cover and undergo screening at departure and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board the train. Further details including train schedule will be issued separately in due course,"&nbsp;read the statement.

The trains will connect New Delhi with Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.&nbsp;

The passengers&nbsp;will have to undergo screening before departure and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board the train. Wearing mask and following rules of social distancing will be compulsory at all times.

Details about train schedules will be announced soon.

More trains will be resumed after observing the movement and response of these 15 trains.

However, the ministry will reserve 20,000 coaches for COVID-19 care centres and will also make sure that adequate number of coaches are reserved for the&nbsp;operation migrant workers through&nbsp;300 trains every day as “Shramik Special” .

A day before lockdown 2.0 ended, Indian Railways was criticised for not issuing a proper statement and therefore creating confusion among the travellers as&nbsp;stranded migrant workers had flocked to the railway station to catch the first train to their hometowns. The chaos caused during that time had forced the railway ministry to urge the people who not come to the stations to book or board trains.

The announcement of resuming online bookings comes a week before lockdown 3.0 is coming to an end.&nbsp;

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is "alive and well", a top security adviser to the South's President Moon Jae-in said, downplaying rumours over Kim's health following his absence from a key anniversary.

"Our government position is firm," said Moon's special adviser on national security Moon Chung-in, in an interview with CNN on Sunday. "Kim Jong Un is alive and well."

The adviser said that Kim had been staying in Wonsan — a resort town in the country's east — since April 13, adding: "No suspicious movements have so far been detected."

Conjecture about Kim's health has grown since his conspicuous absence from the April 15 celebrations for the birthday of his grandfather Kim Il Sung, the North's founder — the most important day in the country's political calendar.

"We have nothing to confirm and no special movement has been detected inside North Korea as of now," the South's presidential office said in a statement last week.

Daily NK, an online media outlet run mostly by North Korean defectors, has reported Kim was recovering after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure earlier this month.

Citing an unidentified source inside the country, it said Kim, who is in his mid-30s, had needed urgent treatment due to heavy smoking, obesity and fatigue.

Soon afterwards, CNN reported that Washington was "monitoring intelligence" that Kim was in "grave danger" after undergoing surgery, quoting what it said was an anonymous US official.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday rejected reports that Kim was ailing but declined to state when he was last in touch with him.

On Monday, the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported that Kim had sent a message of thanks to workers on the giant Wonsan Kalma coastal tourism project.

It was the latest in a series of reports in recent days of statements issued or actions taken in Kim's name, although none has carried any pictures of him.

Satellite images reviewed by 38North, a US-based think tank, showed a train probably belonging to Kim at a station in Wonsan last week.

It cautioned that the train's presence did not "indicate anything about his health" but did "lend weight" to reports he was staying on the country's eastern coast.
