This is actually part of the world&#39;s largest recall, which started <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-06-02/sixty-million-car-bombs-inside-takata-s-air-bag-crisis">first in 2008</a> and could potentially affect over 100 million vehicles from several manufacturers. The issue was that because of a volatile chemical in the airbags, it could suddenly explode and send metal shrapnel into passengers. At least<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/majority-of-money-in-airbag-fraud-settlement-slated-for-automakers-not-actual-victims_us_58b3884ce4b060480e090796"> 11 have died and 200 hurt</a> in the US because of these exploding Takata airbags.

Car owners in India have been affected by the Takata recall too in 2017 with <a href="http://www.financialexpress.com/auto/car-news/honda-recalls-41850-units-of-jazz-city-accord-and-civic-over-airbag-failure/532163/">Honda recalling</a> around 42,000 cars&mdash;including models such as the City, Accord and Civic&mdash;and Toyota recalling 23,000 units of the <a href="http://www.financialexpress.com/auto/car-news/toyota-to-recall-over-23000-units-of-corolla-altis-in-india-over-faulty-takata-airbags/618968/">Corolla Altis</a>.

Mexico is the world&#39;s fourth-largest exporter and seventh-largest producer of vehicles, which are made in 14 of the country&#39;s 32 states, according to industry figures.

The $52 billion-per-year industry represents some 875,000 jobs in Mexico, according to the economy ministry.&nbsp;

But the US president-elect wants to bring those jobs back to the United States.

Trump threatened on Thursday to impose a stiff tariff on Toyota if it goes through with plans to build a new factory in Mexico instead of making it in the United States.

On Tuesday, he made a similar threat against General Motors, while Ford announced the cancellation of a new $1.6 billion Mexican factory that Trump had criticized during the presidential campaign.

Free trade deals

The main reasons why Mexico is so attractive to foreign investors is its relatively low wages, its proximity to the US market and the free trade deals the country has with 46 countries.

The main pact is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that Mexico enacted with the United States and Canada in 1994.

But Trump wants to renegotiate NAFTA, threatening to withdraw if he can&#39;t get a better deal for the United States.

&nbsp;Export machine

Some 80 per cent of vehicles made in Mexico are exported. All are foreign companies as Mexico does not have its own brand.

While cars are shipped to 100 countries, three-quarters of the vehicles produced in Mexico are sent to the United States and more than 10 per cent go to Canada.

In the first 11 months of 2016, GM led vehicle exports from Mexico with 495,790, followed by Nissan (464,877), Fiat Chrysler America (404,160) and Ford (351,691), according to the Mexican Automobile Industry Association.

Toyota was ninth out of 10 car makers with 124,439 vehicle exports.

Auto industry targeted by Trump is vital to Mexico

US President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday targeted Japanese auto giant Toyota Motors for its plan to build Corolla cars for the US market at a plant in Mexico.&nbsp;

&quot;Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for US. NO WAY! Build plant in US or pay big border tax,&quot; Trump said in a post on Twitter.&nbsp;

Toyota, which announced its plan to build the Mexican facility in April 2015, had no immediate comment.

Following Trump&#39;s tweet, the automaker&#39;s stock on the US market, fell 0.5 percent to $120.45 on the New York Stock Exchange.

This was Trump&#39;s latest broadside against automakers building cars in Mexico.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda said in Japan on Thursday that the automaker has no immediate plans to curb production in Mexico, preferring to wait until after Trump`s January 20 inauguration before deciding whether to make any changes.

Earlier, US car maker Ford Motors had decided to scrap its plant in Mexico and said it will create jobs in US by investing $700 million in its plant in Michigan.

Toyota Motor Corp has recalled 3.37 million cars worldwide over possible defects involving air bags and emissions control units. 
 
The automaker on Wednesday said it was recalling 2.87 million cars over a possible fault in emissions control units. That followed an announcement late on Tuesday that 1.43 million cars needed repairs over a separate issue involving air bag inflators. 
 
About 930,000 cars are affected by both potential defects, Toyota said. Because of that overlap, it said the total number of vehicles recalled was 3.37 million. 
 
No injuries have been linked to either issue. 
 
Toyota on Wednesday said evaporative fuel emissions control units in models produced from 2006 to 2015 including the Prius, Auris compact hatchback and Corolla were prone to cracks, which could lead to fuel leaks over time. 
 
Of the 2.87 million vehicles recalled due to the emission control units, Toyota said 1.55 million are in Japan; 713,000 in Europe; 35,000 in China; and 568,000 in other areas. 
 
Late on Tuesday it recalled Prius models and Lexus CT200h cars made from 2010 to 2012 over air bag inflators that could have a small crack in a weld, which could lead to the separation of the inflator chambers. 
 
Of the 1.4 million vehicles recalled over the air bag inflators, 482,000 are in the U.S. market. 
 
The inflator could partially inflate and enter the vehicle interior, increasing the risk of injury, Toyota said. 
 
Sweden-based auto safety gear maker Autoliv Inc confirmed on Wednesday that it supplied the air bag inflators involved. Autoliv said about 90 per cent of the affected inflators were in Prius cars. 
 
Autoliv said it was aware of seven incidents where a side curtain air bag has partially inflated in parked Toyota Prius cars, but no injuries were reported. 
 
Autoliv has benefited from an earlier recall involving faulty air bag inflators made by Japan&#39;s Takata. 
 
The company said in an April regulatory filing that it was investigating six incidents related to its air bags and a possible recall could cost it between $10 million-$40 million, net of expected insurance recoveries.&nbsp; 
 
Autoliv said on Wednesday that it expected the cost of recall to be at the lower end of the range. 
 
The company&#39;s U.S.-listed shares were down 3.6 per cent at $106.06. The stock fell as much as 16 per cent to 765 Swedish Kronas on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, their lowest since December 2014. 
 
Toyota Motor&#39;s U.S. listed shares reversed losses earlier in the day to close up 1.7 per cent on Wednesday at $101.52.

Automobile giant Toyota recalls over 3 million cars worldwide in 2 days

Toyota Motor Corp&nbsp;said on Tuesday that&nbsp;it was recalling a total of about 490,000 vehicles in Japan, China, Europe and other regions over potentially faulty air bag inflators produced by Takata Corp, further widening a massive global recall.

The Japanese automaker said it was recalling around 45,000 vehicles from its Lexus line in Japan for passenger-side airbags produced between 2005 and 2011.

It added that it was recalling around 140,000 Lexus vehicles in China, along with 80,000 Lexus and Toyota vehicles in Europe and 120,000 vehicles from both brands in South America and other regions. Around 100,000 Toyota vehicles would be recalled in Mexico, the company said.
