Director Karthik Subbaraj has officially announced his 10th feature film, Dorothy, which is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film stars National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh, features music by Ilaiyaraaja, and is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 25.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has dismissed a plea seeking to block the AI-enhanced re-release of Rajinikanth's Kochadaiiyaan, allowing the film to return to theatres despite an ongoing financial dispute linked to its original production.

In July 2023, the makers announced that the film was set to premiere at the renowned film festival this year. However, Variety has reported that the film has been removed from the lineup as there is no mention of the film on the festival website.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, there has been no official statement released by the festival or its makers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A source has also told Variety that there are various ‘political forces at play’ in the film being pulled from Toronto Film Festival. Canada has the second-largest Sikh population in the world after India.</p>

<p>The movie is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, played by Dosanjh in the movie. The movie is directed by Honey Trehan, who has previously helmed Netflix's thriller<em> Raat Akeli Hai.</em></p>

<p>As per the social media description, the film is the story of Khalra "uncovering murderous corruption during Punjab’s period of insurgency."&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her security guard, and the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, the police were empowered to detain suspects.</p>

<p>Khalra was a director of a bank in Amritsar, a north Indian city in Punjab State, India. Khalra investigated the illegal killings and cremations of thousands of people involving the Punjab police, who refused to cooperate during the Militancy Period. Khalra was last seen in September 1995 outside his house in Amritsar. Six police officers were convicted for his kidnapping and murder in 2005.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film was earlier named Ghallughara, a term used to refer to the massacre of Sikhs. Backed by production company RSVP Movies, the movie applied for certification from the Central Board of Film Certification in December 2022, however, it took six months to pass the film. The Indian board cleared the film with 21 cuts including the title change. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Pop superstar Harry Styles discussed the complexities of sexuality and said he found the closeted gay man he plays in 1950s drama 'My Policeman' depressing, as his latest movie premiered at the Toronto film festival Sunday.</p>

<p>'My Policeman'&nbsp;is one of several LGBTQ-themed movies in what organizers have hailed as a "breakthrough" year at North America's biggest film festival, along with Billy Eichner's rom-com 'Bros'&nbsp;and critically praised gay military drama 'The Inspection.'</p>

<p>But the world premiere of Styles's latest movie comes as the British actor-singer faces allegations from some high-profile critics of appropriating queer culture, including his gender-non-conforming fashion choices, while keeping his own sexuality ambiguous.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the film, he plays Tom, a policeman caught in a forbidden love triangle with a young woman and an urbane art gallery curator in 1950s Britain, when homosexuality was illegal.</p>

<p>"I think there's so much nuance to them, and so much complexity that comes for people in real life around sexuality and finding themselves," Styles told a Toronto press conference.</p>

<p>The movie, which also stars Emma Corrin and Rupert Everett, jumps between 1957 and 1999, depicting the trio at two different stages of their lives, when Britain's attitude and laws about homosexuality had radically changed.</p>

<p>It deals with the consequences for all three of Tom's being forced to hide his love for curator Patrick.</p>

<p>"I think Tom's version of acceptance is a pretty depressing one -- I think he accepts that he's gonna deny this part of himself for a really long time," said Styles.</p>

<p>He noted,&nbsp;"For me, the reason why the story is so devastating is that ultimately to me, the whole story is about wasted time.</p>

<p>"I think wasted time is the most devastating thing, because it's the only thing we can't control. It's the one thing we can't have back." &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>LGBTQ actors</strong><br />

Styles has been praised by some for normalizing gender fluidity and speaking out for LGBTQ rights, and famously stoked speculation about his sexuality by telling a concert audience, "We're all a little bit gay, aren't we?"</p>

<p>But his position has drawn criticism from prominent LGBTQ figures such as actor-singer Billy Porter, who has accused Styles of "just doing it because it's the thing to do."</p>

<p>The topic of actors who do not openly identify as LGTBQ playing gay roles was raised and even ridiculed earlier at the Toronto festival with the world premiere of "Bros" -- billed as the first gay rom-com from a major Hollywood studio.</p>

<p>"The entire cast is openly LGBTQ actors, even in the straight roles in the movie, which is rare," star Eichner told AFP on the red carpet.</p>

<p>The movie itself contains several quips about allegedly Oscars-hungry straight actors taking on gay roles in films, such as 'Brokeback Mountain'&nbsp;and last year's 'The Power of the Dog'&nbsp;starring Benedict Cumberbatch.</p>

<p>"I mean it's absurd and kind of infuriating that it took this long, that we haven't had more of these movies; there should be tons of these movies by now," said Eichner, about 'Bros.'</p>

<p>"Still, I'm very grateful that Universal finally decided it was time."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Director Nicholas Stoller added that he hoped the film about a commitment-phobic gay New York podcaster reluctantly seeking love will resonate with "not just an LGBTQ audience, but a straight audience."</p>

<p>"The biggest companies that make films have often been the most cautious, shall we say, when it comes to this kind of representation," he said.</p>

<p>"That seems to be changing."</p>

<p>Among those was 'The Inspection'&nbsp;by writer-director Elegance Bratton, who drew on his own experiences as a Black gay man who joined the US Marines to escape homelessness and was forced to endure at-times brutal homophobia.</p>

<p>Jeremy Pope, who plays Bratton's alter ego Ellis and is openly gay, told Deadline that his performance came "from a place of truth and honesty."</p>

<p>"It ended up being something very beautiful and -- for me and for him -- very healing, to be able to look across the room at my writer and director, that was Black and queer, and say 'I see you.'"</p>

<p>TIFF runs until September 18.</p>

He plays the role of an ex-floor manager of a factory who loses his job during the pandemic. He then works as a food delivery rider, grappling with the world of ratings and incentives. To support the income, his homemaker wife begins exploring different work opportunities, with fear and the excitement of newfound independence.<br />

He plays the role of an ex-floor manager of a factory who loses his job during the pandemic. He then works as a food delivery rider, grappling with the world of ratings and incentives. To support the income, his homemaker wife begins exploring different work opportunities, with fear and the excitement of newfound independence. The film is about the relentlessness of life, but not without their shared moments of joy. It captures the lives of invisible `ordinary` people, hidden in plain sight. Kapil Sharma, best known as a comic, shows a different side of Manas with a realistic performance. The film's pragmatic approach captures a regular guy who eventually starts to comprehend the pointless nature of star ratings and delivery targets, as well as concepts of workers` rights and unity. Set in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the film captures what an `ordinary` family faces in the post-pandemic world. Excited about the TIFF premiere, Nandita said,"Zwigato is finally ready! <p>Hollywood actor Kristen Stewart, who plays the late Princess Diana in Pablo Larrain`s `Spencer`, recently said that there`s a big difference between her as an actor going to the depths of despair on-screen over her character`s marriage to Prince Charles and the late Royal herself.<br />

According to The Hollywood Reporter, while speaking at the Toronto Film Festival on Wednesday, Stewart reflected on her time portraying Princess Diana and explained how she felt support on-set of the biopic that comes to Toronto by way of a world premiere in Venice and a North American premiere at Telluride.<br />

"The one difference between Diana and myself, especially, is that she was alone and I was not. I had people holding me... I had a sort of safety net," Stewart said.<br />

Larrain`s `Spencer` is set over a long Christmas weekend during which Diana decides to end her doomed marriage to Prince Charles.<br />

Stewart, while being effusive in her admiration for Princess Diana, reiterated that she and the late Royal were quite different people, despite the actress being thrust into the glare of similar superstardom after her star turn in the `Twilight` franchise.<br />

"There was no way to play this part perfectly, and therefore it was actually easier, or at least easier to not be so intimidated or daunted. Because the only way to catch something wild is to be that, and I could only be my version of that and hope that I learned everything I could learn from her and then kind of meld and kind of be both me and her in what was going to be the best version," she explained about the alchemy required to play Diana on screen.<br />

Besides the aid of a voice coach to nail down her British accent and donning costumes, hair and make-up provided by Larrain`s creative team to play the iconic late Royal, often with her classic head-tilt pose, Stewart credits her close collaboration with the Chilean director to get Diana right on the screen.<br />

Karimi revealed, she fled her country and landed in Kiev, Ukraine with help from the Slovak Film and Television Academy.<br />

Since then Karimi has been conducting interviews and participating in major industry events like the Venice Film Festival and TIFF to share her experiences as a refugee and get support for Afghan cinema&nbsp;and its&nbsp;filmmakers.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Karimi also stated that she was trying to get answers from the now Taliban-controlled Afghan government as to whether or not she still holds her post in Afghan Film but has yet to receive an answer.<br />

"This is the reality. They don`t tell me that I am not the general director of Afghan Film but they don`t tell me anything else," Karimi said. The filmmaker expressed that she wished to go back to her country if she was allowed to continue her work but was doubtful if she, as a woman, would be allowed to do so.<br />

Before Taliban took over Afghanistan, Karimi revealed she was trying to plan a national film festival in the country and trying to open more movie theatres across Afghanistan.<br />

"It was like a film," she said of the experience trying to get onto an aeroplane, likening the experience of the Korean film `Train to Busan`.<br />

"It was like zombies are coming to attack you and you are running."<br />

Karimi plans to turn her experience fleeing Afghanistan into a feature titled `Flight from Kabul`, hoping to finish a first draft of the screenplay later this month, and is soon set to teach at Italy`s National Film School in Rome.<br />

Karimi also blamed the Afghan government for not providing enough support to the arts, pointing out how cinema was an agent of change.<br />
<br />
"One of the biggest mistakes this past 20 years of the government of Afghanistan is that they didn`t support art and culture and cinema. They didn`t even build one cinema in Afghanistan." said the filmmaker, noting that there were no film funds or attempts to build out infrastructure for productions.<br />

"If we had real cinema, if we had real production, if the private sector and government-supported filmmakers to make a film industry, then we wouldn`t be in this situation right now," she said.<br />

She appealed to young Afghan filmmakers to not let cinema die in the country. "Do not let Afghan cinema die. Even if you are in exile.<br />

"I just ask all filmmakers around the world, please don`t be silent about the situation in Afghanistan and don`t be silent about the cinema of Afghanistan."<br />

Co-director Thom Zimny described how he used the emotion of the music to frame the film's evocative images.<br />

"I was really responding to the sonic qualities of the strings, and the sonic qualities that I found on the album I thought would translate into a great cinematic experience," Zimny said.</p>
