She was admitted at Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital in Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. She was seen coming out of the hospital premises in a vehicle hours later. In an official statement, Dr Manimoy Bandopadhyay, who is the director of SSKM Hospital, said: "Chief Minister of West Bengal reported to our hospital today around 07:30 pm with a history of fall within the vicinity of her home due to some push from behind." The party alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conspired in the raids during the second phase of the Lok Sabha Election. CBI on Friday recovered a huge cache of arms and explosives, including foreign-made revolvers, Indian revolvers, foreign-made pistols and ammunition, in Sandeshkhali and called in the NSG bomb squad for their disposal. TMC also accused the West Bengal Election Commission of turning a "blind eye" on the actions of the central agencies. In its letter to West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer, TMC wrote, "In this regard, it is stated that though 'law and order' is a domain falling completely within the ambit of the State Government, the CBI did not issue an actionable notice to the State Government and/or the police authorities before carrying out such a raid." "Further, the State Police has a fully functional bomb disposal squad which could have assisted the entire operation, if the CBI indeed felt that a bomb squad was required during such a raid," TMC added. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (Apr 15) lashed out at the Election Commission accusing it of "favouring" the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

She then said that if there is a single riot in the state, ECI would be responsible, further threatening to go on a hunger strike outside the poll panel's office for 55 days if needed.

While addressing a rally at Alipurduar, the TMC supremo claimed that the ECI ousted the Deputy Inspector General of Police of Murshidabad at the BJP's order.

"Even today, just based on BJP's instructions, the DIG of Murshidabad was changed. Now, if there are riots in Murshidabad and Malda, the responsibility will lie with the Election Commission. The BJP wanted to change the police officers to trigger riots and violence. If there is even one riot, the ECI will be responsible as they are looking after law and order here," she said.

"If I can fast for farmers for 26 days (during anti-land acquisition protests in Singur), I can go on a hunger strike for 55 days outside your (EC) office as well," she added.

She further claimed that the saffron party threatened the opposition bloc with imprisonment.

"I will see how many jails you have. How many cops do you have? How many people will you thrash? I have been assaulted a lot of times. I know how to fight. I am not a coward," she said.

Banerjee's remarks came after TMC claimed that Income Tax officials&nbsp;raided&nbsp;a helicopter that was used by party leader Abhishek Banerjee.

The TMC chief while addressing a rally in Cooch Behar claimed that BJP was "misusing" central agencies against the party ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

"Income Tax officials conducted a raid and searched Abhishek Banerjee's chopper before the trial run but found nothing. Those I-T officials claimed that we had inputs that there was money and gold in the chopper, but they found nothing. We don't engage in such acts. It is the BJP that is involved in such things. But will the officials of the central agency ever dare to check BJP leaders' choppers," she said.

In the social media posting, the party alleged that Chowdhury's actions were a clear testament to his fear of losing in the upcoming elections.

Chowdhury later released clarification over TMC's post saying that a group of unidentified "drunken" youths "stopped" his car and chanted "go back" slogans.

He stated that this was a practice started by the Trinamool Congress during last year's civic polls.

"This is nothing but a ploy to stop me. The local TMC is behind this. They want people not to work for the Congress party. This is the same thing they had done during the civic polls last year," Chowdhury told reporters.

"They were yelling: Go back, go back!! I stopped and asked them what their complaints were. Initially, only one person was there, but then several others joined him. I realised that it was organised by the TMC. But they would not be able to stop me in this way," he said.

The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday (Mar 30) arrested suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh in connection with a PMLA case.

The development came as the probe agency interrogated him at the Basirhat Sub Correctional Home, where he is currently lodged.&nbsp;

He is set to be produced before the ED Special Court.&nbsp;

Shahjahan, who has also been accused of forcefully occupying lands in the Sandeshkhali area, was questioned inside the prison for over four hours after receiving permission from the Basirhat sub-divisional court in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

He was arrested on February 29 by the West Bengal Police over an attack that was carried out by his supporters on a team of ED officials.

The probe agency team members were attacked by the mob while they were on their way to conduct a raid on Shahjahan's house in Sandeshkhali over an alleged ration scam on January 5.

He was arrested after being on the run on for over 55 days following violent protests led by women, alleging sexual atrocities and land grabs.

Shahjahan was suspended by the Trinamool Congress for six years following his arrest.

The case was transferred by the Calcutta High Court to CBI on March 6.

India’s federal investigation agency CBI on Saturday (Mar 23) raided Kolkata home of key opposition figure Mahua Moitra in the cash-for-query case. CBI’s action came after the anti-corruption body Lokpal asked it to file a case against Mahua Moitra earlier this week. "After careful evaluation and consideration of the entire material on record, there remains no doubt regarding the fact that the allegations leveled against the Respondent Public Servant (RPS), most of which are supported by cogent evidence, are extremely serious in nature, especially in view of the position held by her," Lokpal had said in its order.

Moitra was expelled from the lower house of the Indian parliament in the case last December. An ethics panel had recommended the ex-MP be removed as she allegedly took bribe from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions critical of the Narendra Modi government in Parliament.

Moitra was also accused of imparting her confidential log-in credentials for the parliamentary website to Hiranandani so that he could post questions directly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has hit out at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for nominating veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha as its candidate from West Bengal's Asansol in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP's IT cell head, Amit Malviya, took to social media to express disapproval, throwing light on Sinha's reel-life depiction and drawing parallels with real-life incidents of criminal behaviour within the TMC ranks.

"Meet Shatrughan Sinha, TMC’s candidate from Asansol. TMC rank is full of rapists, both in real (likes of Shahjahan Sheikh) and reel life," Malviya said in a post on X while sharing an old clip from Sinha's film.

“Surprised Mamata Banerjee didn’t ask Shatrughan Sinha to join her on the eve of International Women’s Day for the sham women empowerment march,” he&nbsp;added.

Malviya's remarks were scathing, as he linked TMC's choice of Sinha with allegations of criminality within the party. By referencing a past film clip featuring Sinha, Malviya insinuated that the TMC's candidate was emblematic of the party's alleged tolerance of criminal behavior, both on-screen and off.&nbsp;

Following the Trinamool Congress' (TMC) announcement of its candidates for all 42 seats in West Bengal for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took a dig at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stating that she was fearful of PM Modi.

"Mamata Banerjee is worried that if she joins the INDIA Alliance, she will have to face Modi. She is worried that if the ED and CBI start visiting TMC on Modi's orders, it could pose a risk to the TMC party. So, by distancing herself from the alliance, Mamata Banerjee is sending a message to Modi's office: Don't be upset with me; I'm not part of the alliance and I won't compete with the BJP," he said.

He further claimed that Banerjee's main aim was to defeat Chowdhury at any cost, even if that meant BJP's victory.

Mamata's announcement included a surprise nomination for former cricketer Yousuf Pathan from the Berhampore Lok Sabha seat from&nbsp;where Congress heavyweight, Adhir Chowdhury is a sitting MP.

Among noteworthy candidates, Mahua Moitra will fight from Krishnanagar, Saayoni Ghosh from Jadavpur, Gopal Lamba from Darjeeling, Abhishek Banerjee from Diamond Harbour, and actor Shatrughan Sinha from Asansol.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC had secured 22 seats, a decrease from its previous count in 2014. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the NDA alliance had made significant gains, capturing 18 seats. While the Congress at the time only managed to secure two seats.

As West Bengal gears up for the elections with 42 parliamentary constituencies in the state, TMC attempted a seat-sharing agreement with the Congress as part of the Opposition's INDIA bloc but failed.

As recently as Sunday (Mar 10), the West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee declared that there would be no seat adjustments with Congress in the state.

While addressing a gathering in Siliguri, PM Modi accused the TMC of creating 25 lakh fake job cards to benefit the party's "tolabaz".

The entire country is discussing what TMC leaders did to the Dalit and Adivasi women of Sandeshkhali. Atrocities against women and to loot the hard-earned money of the poor this is what TMC's 'tolabaz' do," he said.

He then slammed the TMC over the release of MGNREGA wages and said that the BJP-ruled Centre sends the money but the TMC government steals it.

“Today’s joining is nice. The way they have welcomed me is overwhelming...Everybody knows corruption is to be fought,” Gangopadhyay told news agency ANI after he joined the party and was welcomed by West Bengal BJP Chief Sukanta Majumdar.&nbsp;

Gangopadhyay, who is likely to compete in the upcoming general elections, has had several disputes with the state’s ruling party TMC because of some of his rulings in cases of corruption.&nbsp;

West Bengal’s ruling party after the now-former Calcutta HC judge announced that he would join politics alleged that Gangopadhyay was a “political worker” and his decision laid bare his anti-TMC bias.&nbsp;

When asked about the violence in the West Bengal village of Sandeshkhali, Gangopadhyay told ANI, “It is a very bad incident.”&nbsp;

He added, “The state leaders have gone there. They have been prevented from reaching there. Despite that, they have reached and stood beside the women there and BJP is taking up the cause of oppressed people in Sandeshkhali.”&nbsp;

Gangopadhyay was formally inducted into BJP on Thursday, by Majumdar and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, in Kolkata.&nbsp;

“As a State President of BJP I welcome former Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay to our party, to the family of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said the West Bengal BJP chief.&nbsp;

He added, “I believe the way he has worked as a Justice for deprived, exploited victims of Bengal, he will carry forward that work with the leadership of the BJP.”

Gangopadhyay said West Bengal state was reeling under extreme corruption and he was not able to use the courtroom to reach out to common people.

“I felt that I had done enough work there (in judiciary), but some work is set to be done for people who cannot go to the court or do not have the resources to go to the court,” Gangopadhyay said after announcing his decision to join BJP, on Tuesday (Mar 5).&nbsp;

He added, “They are very helpless, and I should help them with the little resources I have for them, and that's why I have decided to join politics.”&nbsp;

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Friday (Feb 23) stated that there has been "no change" in the party's stance of running for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, a few in Assam, and one in Meghalaya.

"A few weeks ago, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee stated that TMC is fighting all the 42 seats in Bengal. We are also in the fray in a few seats in Assam and the Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya. There is no change in this position," he said, hinting at the party's unwillingness to ally with its INDIA bloc partner Congress.

This came amid rumours that the Congress is close to finalizing its seat-sharing arrangements with the party.

The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, which are also a part of the opposition bloc INDIA, reportedly reopened negotiations to challenge the BJP-led NDA together in the Lok Sabha elections that are scheduled to take place in April-May 2024.

However, O’Brien in the Rajya Sabha said, “A few weeks ago…West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that TMC is fighting all the 42 seats in Bengal. We are also in the fray in a few seats in Assam and the Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya. There is no change in this position.”&nbsp;

<h2>Congress says discussion underway</h2>

Congress MP, reacting to Derek's comments which hinted toward a no-alliance, said that the discussions with the party were underway and that despite heated discussions, Congress respects Mamata Banerjee.

“Discussions are underway. Our doors are always open for TMC. Mamata Banerjee and TMC have said that they want to strengthen the INDIA Alliance and the biggest motive is to defeat the BJP,” Ramesh told news agency ANI.

“Heated discussions keep taking place between the two parties but we respect Mamata Banerjee,” he added.

The Congress has finalized its seat-sharing agreements with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, following some initial snags.

Notably, Adhikari's visit was confirmed after the Calcutta High Court on Monday gave him the pass whilst ordering him to not make any "provocative speeches" or indulge in "any unlawful activities".&nbsp;

"I have a court order. Even then, you are stopping me. This is unfortunate. I will wait for an hour. Then I will return to Kolkata and draw the high court's attention to this. The Mamata Banerjee government and its police are not abiding by the Calcutta High Court's order," he said.

<h2>War of words intensifies&nbsp;</h2>

The war of words has also intensified between BJP over the allegations of 'systemic gang rape' and sexual exploitation of women by the ruling party's leaders.&nbsp;

While TMC head and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of stirring trouble in the region, the saffron party's Locket Chatterjee stated that Banerjee remained silent while women were being tortured under her administration.&nbsp;

"Right now you are not able to understand the situation of Sandeshkhali. We have heard of Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan and their atrocities on women, today the same thing is happening in West Bengal, and Mamata Bannerjee is silent. What is she saying? She is saying RSS is doing this," said Chatterjee.

"Sheikh Shahjahan, who is the leader of a gang, you have to get permission from him to file your FIR. Mamata Banerjee was saying yesterday that there is not a single FIR. That is why there is no FIR, because the police are in cahoots with Sheikh Shahjahan," she added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma talked to some of the women who have accused TMC leaders of sexual assault. After the conversations, Sharma said the state of West bengal should be under the president's rule.&nbsp;

“Many women at Sandeshkhali were molested. I heard about two rapes. One rape case was filed today. Nothing will happen in West Bengal unless there is President’s rule,” Sharma told reporters.&nbsp;

“Where is the chief minister? She should resign and come here as a woman to understand the pain of these people," she added, targeting the CM.&nbsp;

Popular Bengali actor and Member of Parliament from India’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) party Mimi Chakraborty, on Thursday (Feb 15) said that she has submitted her resignation as lawmaker to West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who is yet to accept it.&nbsp;

<h2>Why did Chakraborty resign?</h2>

The first-time MP from Jadavpur, a locality south of the state capital Kolkata&nbsp;went to the state assembly in the afternoon (local time) to meet with Banerjee," reported PTI.

“Today, I met our party supremo. I had submitted my resignation to her on February 13. I have understood in all these years that politics is not my cup of tea,” she told reporters.&nbsp;

“I have definitely resigned, but my resignation hasn't been accepted. I have coordinated with the CM, and she assured me that she will take care of everything," Mimi added.

When asked about why she tendered her resignation to the TMC chief and not the Lok Sabha Speaker as per the norm, the actor-turned-politician said “Once I get the nod from the TMC, I will submit it to the Speaker.”

Notably, the 35-year-old who was elected from Jadavpur in 2019 on a TMC ticket, also resigned from two Parliament committees – the Standing Committee on Industrial Affairs of Parliament and the Joint Committee of Union Ministry of Power and New and Renewable Energy, earlier this week.

“Politics is not for me. You have to promote someone here (in politics) if you are helping someone...Besides being a politician, I also work as an actor. I have equal responsibilities,” Chakraborty told ANI news agency.&nbsp;

The actor-turned-politician also revealed that she had tried resigning from her post back in 2022, but the West Bengal CM rejected it at that time.&nbsp;

“I wanted to tell her (Banerjee) about my resignation from a party that gave me an opportunity to go ahead. I had also told her in 2022 about my resignation from the post of an MP. She had rejected it at that time," she said.

<h2>Other TMC MPs to quit?</h2>

Chakraborty’s resignation comes days after another actor MP from TMC Deepak Adhikari quit from three administrative posts in his constituency, Ghatal.&nbsp;

The move sparked speculation about him quitting politics or the party, which he denied. However, Adhikari said he may not contest the Lok Sabha polls this year, adding that he had discussed the issue with the TMC chief and the final decision was up to her.&nbsp;

Chakraborty’s move comes at a time when another actor MP from the state has come under fire for not addressing the allegations of sexual harassment against Trinamool leaders in the violence-hit Sandeshkhali village.&nbsp;

TMC, which is a part of the opposition INDIA bloc, has&nbsp;come under fire as women in Sandeshkhali have been protesting for days against the party leader&nbsp;Shajahan Sheikh and his men&nbsp;for 'sexually harassing them'.
