<h2><strong>EC responds to TMC's&nbsp;allegation</strong></h2>

<p>Responding to TMC's allegation, West Bengal's chief electoral officer (CEO) said that while commissioning EVMs, common address tags&nbsp;were signed&nbsp;by the candidates and their agents present.&nbsp;</p>

Lok Sabha elections 2024: TMC alleges EVMs found with BJP tags, Election Commission responds

<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (May 19) lashed out at Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the Sandeshkhali incident stating that the party questioned the “characters of the sisters of Sandeshkhali” just to save their 'Shahjahan'.</p>

<p>He stated that when the TMC came to power, it claimed to safeguard Maa, Maati, and Manush but failed to do so in due course of time.</p>

<p>"TMC came to power by saying that it would protect Maa, Maati, and Manush. Today, TMC is devouring Maa, Maati, and Manush. The women of Bengal have lost faith in TMC. The sin that has happened in Sandeshkhali has forced the sisters of Bengal to think. The TMC people do not even consider the sisters of SC/ST families as human beings. To save their Shahjahan, the TMC people are blaming the sisters of Sandeshkhali and questioning their character. The kind of language they are using for them, every daughter of Bengal will destroy TMC with her vote," PM Modi said while addressing a public meeting in Purulia.</p>

<p>"TMC gives the slogan 'Maa, Maati, Maanush' yet does nothing to protect them. The incident of Sandeshkhali has shaken the women of Bengal. <p>Sandeshkhali, a village in North 24 Parganas district, grabbed headlines earlier this year when its residents, mostly women, took to the streets to protest against the ruling TMC and Shahjahan, the main accused in the incident.</p>

<p>Women levelled allegations against Shahjahan and his aides for committing atrocities against them and for also grabbing their lands. They accused Shajahan and his aides of "land-grab and sexual assault".</p>

<p>PM Modi further slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her remarks targeting the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha.</p>

<p>He said that the TMC supremo was issuing threats to these socio-religious organisations just to please her vote bank.</p>

<p>"The TMC government, which intimidated and threatened the people of Bengal during elections, has crossed all limits this time. Today, in the country and the world, ISKCON, Ram Krishna Mission, and Bharat Sevashram Sangh are known for service and morality, but today the Chief Minister of Bengal is openly threatening them, warning them from an open platform," PM Modi said while addressing a public meeting in Purulia.</p>

<p>"There are millions of followers associated with these missions all over the world, and their sole aim is to serve the people. The Bengal government has pointed a finger at him and is threatening his name. So much courage! Just to please their vote bank," he added.</p>

<p>PM Modi's remarks came after the West Bengal CM, during a rally in Behrampore said, "There is a maharaj in Behrampore; I have been hearing about him for a long time. Kartik Maharaj. He says he will not allow any TMC agent in the poll booth. I do not consider him a saint because he is directly involved in politics. I used to respect Bharat Sevashram Sangha a lot. It has been on my list of respected organisations for a long time."</p>

<p>Congress leader Jairam Ramesh responded to a question regarding the video and said he hadn't watched it yet. He said, "I haven't seen the video and don't know in which context he has said this but I want to make it clear that Congress party has just one aim that is to heavily decrease the number of seats of the BJP that it got in 2019."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Congress, the Left parties and the TMC are part of the INDI alliance, but there is no seat-sharing between the Congress and TMC in West Bengal for the Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;</p>

WATCH: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury says ‘better to vote for BJP than TMC’

<p>Reacting to the cache of ammunition seized by CBI from West Bengal's Sandeshkhali, the ruling Trinamool Congress raised suspicions that the bombs could have been planted by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or National Security Guard (NSG) commandos.&nbsp;The allegation&nbsp;follows closely on the heels of a CBI raid on locations tied to individuals suspected in the January 5 assault on an Enforcement Directorate team in which several officials were injured in Sandeshkhali when they set out to raid TMC leader Shah Jahan Sheikh's residence.</p>

<p>The party in a letter to the Election Commission of India on Friday (Apr 26) evening wrote, "It is astonishing to notice that media personnel were already present during such the raid even before the state administration arrived at the spot."</p>

<p>"At such point in time, it was already nationwide news that weapons had been recovered during the raid. There is no way of knowing with certainty, as to whether these weapons were indeed recovered during the search and seizure procedure or whether they were surreptitiously planted by the CBI/NSG," the letter further read.</p>

<p>With the Lok Sabha elections going on, TMC&nbsp;raised a complaint with the ECI alleging that the CBI is trying to thwart the campaign of the opposition parties with the help of other central agencies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the Calcutta High Court instructed the CBI to investigate accusations of extortion and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali involving Sheikh Shahjahan, who after evading law enforcement for almost two months got arrested in March, the Bengal government has taken the matter to the Supreme Court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a latest development,&nbsp;TMC has filed a formal complaint with the state's chief electoral officer.&nbsp;The party alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conspired in the raids during the second phase of the Lok Sabha Election.&nbsp;</p>

<p>CBI on Friday recovered a&nbsp;huge&nbsp;cache of arms and explosives, including foreign-made revolvers, Indian revolvers, foreign-made pistols and ammunition, in Sandeshkhali and called in the NSG bomb squad for their disposal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>TMC also accused the West Bengal Election Commission&nbsp;of turning a "blind eye" on the actions of&nbsp;the central agencies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In its letter to West Bengal&nbsp;Chief Electoral Officer, TMC wrote, "In this regard, it&nbsp;is stated&nbsp;that though 'law and order' is a domain falling completely within the ambit of the State Government, the CBI did not issue an actionable notice to the State Government&nbsp;and/or&nbsp;the police authorities before carrying out such a raid."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She then said that if there is a single riot in the state, ECI would be responsible, further threatening to go on a hunger strike outside the poll panel's office for 55 days if needed.</p>

<p>While addressing a rally at Alipurduar, the TMC supremo claimed that the ECI ousted the Deputy Inspector General of Police of Murshidabad at the BJP's order.</p>

<p>"Even today, just based on BJP's instructions, the DIG of Murshidabad was changed. Now, if there are riots in Murshidabad and Malda, the responsibility will lie with the Election Commission. The BJP wanted to change the police officers to trigger riots and violence. If there is even one riot, the ECI will be responsible as they are looking after law and order here," she said.</p>

<p>"If I can fast for farmers for 26 days (during anti-land acquisition protests in Singur), I can go on a hunger strike for 55 days outside your (EC) office as well," she added.</p>

<p>The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday (Mar 30) arrested suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh in connection with a PMLA case.</p>

<p>The development came as the probe agency interrogated him at the Basirhat Sub Correctional Home, where he is currently lodged.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He is set to be produced before the ED Special Court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shahjahan, who has also been accused of forcefully occupying lands in the Sandeshkhali area, was questioned inside the prison for over four hours after receiving permission from the Basirhat sub-divisional court in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.</p>

<p>He was arrested on February 29 by the West Bengal Police over an attack that was carried out by his supporters on a team of ED officials.</p>

<p>The probe agency team members were attacked by the mob while they were on their way to conduct a raid on Shahjahan's house in Sandeshkhali over an alleged ration scam on January 5.</p>

<p>He was arrested after being on the run on for over 55 days following violent protests led by women, alleging sexual atrocities and land grabs.</p>

<p>Shahjahan was suspended by the Trinamool Congress for six years following his arrest.</p>

<p>The case was transferred by the Calcutta High Court to CBI on March 6.</p>

<h2><strong>CBI arrests Shahjahan's brother for involvement in Sandeshkhali ED assault case</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier this month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested three accused over involvement in the Sandeshkhali ED assault case, including Shahjahan's brother.</p>

<p>The accused were identified as Mafujar Molla, Sirajul Molla and Sheikh Alomgir.</p>

<p>A total of six people have so far been arrested by the CBI in the case and a probe is underway.</p>

<p>Rekha Sharma, who is the National Commission for Women chairperson, met President Droupadi Murmu earlier this month and submitted a report on the Sandeshkhali violence, the India-based news agency PTI reported citing sources. The commission recommended the President's Rule in West Bengal over the Sandeshkhali violence.</p>

<p>A fact-finding report was also prepared by the commission which said that it has gathered disturbing testimonies of women alleging widespread fear and systematic abuse by both police officers and members of the ruling Trinamool Congress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s federal investigation agency CBI on Saturday (Mar 23) raided Kolkata home of key opposition figure Mahua Moitra in the cash-for-query case. The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader on Friday. CBI’s action came after the anti-corruption body Lokpal asked it to file a case against Mahua Moitra earlier this week. The CBI has been asked to file a report of the case within six months, along with updated status every month.</p>

<p>"After careful evaluation and consideration of the entire material on record, there remains no doubt regarding the fact that the allegations leveled against the Respondent Public Servant (RPS), most of which are supported by cogent evidence, are extremely serious in nature, especially in view of the position held by her," Lokpal had said in its order.</p>

<h2><strong>The cash-for-query case</strong></h2>

<p>Moitra was expelled from the lower house of the Indian parliament in the case last December. An ethics panel had recommended the ex-MP be removed as she allegedly took bribe from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions critical of the Narendra Modi government in Parliament.</p>

<p>Moitra was also accused of imparting her confidential log-in credentials for the parliamentary website to Hiranandani so that he could post questions directly.</p>
