Scientists have discovered different personalities in tigers. It turns out not all tigers are fierce predators. While some are 'majestic' and dominant, others are 'steady' and sincere. Molly Gambhir tells you.

<p>Why should only humans have all the fun? Tigers need their time to be individualistic as well. They&nbsp;are not just meat-chomping, mean, killing machines as we think. You wouldn't exactly see a tiger writing poetry, but it's now reasonably clear that tigers may have a little variance in their personalities.</p>

<p>A study has now put its seal of approval on this idea. Published on Wednesday (April 5) in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the study observed behaviour of 248 Siberian tigers through a personality test. Again, the mental image of tigers sitting dilligently to mark answers on paper is probably far from what actually happened.</p>

<p>"We found that tigers are very individual and that people who've worked with them and know them well see their individual personalities," co-author Rosalind Arden of the London School of Economics told AFP news agency.</p>

<p>A commonly used human personality test was adapted for this study. Using the test, tiger traits were explored. The traits were confidence, sincerity, bullying and savagery.</p>

<p>Questionnaires with a list of 70 personality indicators were filled out by veterinarians and feeders who work with the tigers on a daily basis.</p>

<p>The combined results revealed that the tigers displayed characteristics that fell into two overarching personality categories: Majesty and steadiness.</p>

<p>Tigers scoring higher for "majesty" were healthier, preyed more on live animals, and ate and mated more.</p>

<p>They were also "regarded by their human raters as having higher group status among tigers," the study said.</p>

<p>But being collaborative and gentler had its evolutionary benefits too: "steady" tigers were shown to be gentler, more sincere and more loving.</p>

<p>Such traits may play a role in the unusual length of time -- two to three years -- that tiger cubs remain with their mothers.</p>

<p>The study found very few sex-related differences in tigers' personalities, and father tigers have also been observed taking part in raising their young.</p>

<p>"It's pleasant to see that you don't have to be dominant, fierce, competitive and aggressive in order to succeed as a tiger," said Arden.</p>

<p>The study may be an amusing one to a common reader. But it's probably a bad idea to try to deduce whether the tiger that suddenly appeared before you in the wild is gentle or not. Just scoot.</p>

<p>Tigress T-1, the first big cat shifted to Madhya Pradesh’s Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR) under a reintroduction Project almost 14 years ago and who had given birth to 13 cubs in her lifetime, has died, an official said on Wednesday.</p>

<p>The tigress had made a very remarkable contribution to the success of Panna’s Tiger Reintroduction Project (TRP). She was the first tigress to be brought here from the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, also in Madhya Pradesh, in March 2009, under the project as the PTR was left with no big cats at that time.</p>

<p>“A patrolling team spotted the carcass of a big cat on Tuesday evening in the Madla range. An inactive radio collar, which was worn by T-1 in 2017, was found near the carcass,” PTR’s field director Brijendra Jha said, adding a team of forest officials reached the spot and inspected the area.</p>

<p>T-1 died naturally as nothing suspicious suggesting anything otherwise was found in the area, he said.</p>

<p>After the postmortem, the carcass was disposed of on Wednesday morning as per the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s (NTCA) guidelines. The viscera was sent to laboratories at Sagar and Jabalpur for examination, the forest officer said.</p>

<p>According to Jha, the T-1 was roaming in the PTR buffer zone. She was surviving on hunting done by other tigers for some time as she had lost the strength to kill prey due to her age.</p>

<p>“The tigress had given birth to 13 cubs in five litters. T-1, who lived in PTR for 14 years, made a very remarkable contribution to the success of Panna’s Tiger Reintroduction Project,” Jha said.</p>

<p>The average age of a tiger is around 14 years but T-1 lived beyond that, he said.</p>

<p>According to the All-India Tiger Estimation Report 2018, Madhya Pradesh was home to 526 tigers, the highest for any state in the country.</p>

<p>The next All India Tiger Estimation Report is due this year as Census work in the country was completed last year.</p>

<p>Madhya Pradesh has many tiger reserves, including Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura and Panna.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A tiger that killed nine humans in the last 26 days was shot dead by forest officials in India’s West Chamara district, Bihar.</p>

<p>The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the State’s additional principal chief conservator of forest-cum-wildlife warden had issued a ‘shoot-at-sight’ order for the big cat following protest from the people living around the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in Bagaha.</p>

<p>“An order has been issued to kill the tiger that has caused death to common life. The order has been issued by the department’s additional principal chief conservator of forest-cum-chief wildlife warden, Bihar Shri Prabhat Kumar Gupta in which it has been considered necessary to kill the tiger in view of all the circumstances”, said the government release.</p>

<p>A special team of forest personnel was brought in from southern Hyderabad state and from Bihar’s Patna capital city, Chief Wildlife Warden Prabhat Kumar Gupta said.</p>

<p>“Forest personnel have been trying to cage the tiger that strayed out of the VTR area. The order for the killing was issued as per procedure when it was established that the tiger was accustomed to living in human habitation,” PTI news agency quoted Gupta as saying.</p>

However, after nine days, she reappeared.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roller coaster rides can be extremely scary. The high speed and height can frighten any person. This couple from Dubai got way too creative when they used a real tiger to indicate the gender of their baby.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Posted on Instagram, a video shows a tiger roaming on the beach next to the famed Burj al-Arab hotel in Dubai. Around the tiger, there are a few balloons floating around. Curiously, the tiger makes a big leap, bursting a balloon that sends pink powder into the air, indicating that it is a girl.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Man alive after surviving hours in a morgue freezer</strong></p>

<p>In a strange incident in November, a man managed to survive after spending a night in the morgue freezer. The man was declared dead after a road accident. At a private medical facility in Delhi, a doctor declared him dead upon arrival. After this, he was transported to a government hospital for a post-mortem.</p>

<p>After being examined, there were no signs of life found. After the police were informed, his body was placed in the morgue freezer until his family arrived.&nbsp;</p>

<p>People were taken by surprise after there were reports of a 70-year-old hunter in France getting bitten by a bear. Animal's bite can be injurious and for a 70-year-old to be able to survive such an attack astonished many people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, as per reports, arteries in the man's leg were severely damaged in the incident and he had to be transported to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Toulouse.</p>

However, the capture operation has not been successful thus far, owing to the terrain, inclement weather and disturbances by the local population. <p data-changed="false" data-paragraphid="95">The order empowers officials of MTR to hunt the tiger ‘MDT 23’ under Section 11(1) (a) of the Wildlife Protection Act, in strict adherence to the guidelines issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).</p>

<p data-changed="false" data-paragraphid="95">This entire operation, which is being conducted with assistance from Kerala Forest teams, Special Task Force, will be photographed, videographed and documented, as per the order.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-changed="false" data-paragraphid="96">"This is not a man-eater tiger. The unfortunate instances of people getting killed were because they ignored the warnings and ventured into the forests where the tiger was roaming. What has been issued is not a shooting order. Our first priority is to trap and capture the tiger. Shooting (if at all) will be the last resort, " Dr. Niraj told WION.</p>

<p data-changed="false" data-from-init="true" data-paragraphid="97">When asked about the next steps after capture, he stated that the tiger would be subjected to a medical examination by expert veterinarians, after which a decision on moving it to a zoo or other similar options would be considered.</p>

"This is not a man-eater tiger. The unfortunate instances of people getting killed were because they ignored the warnings and ventured into the forests where the tiger was roaming. What has been issued is not a shooting order. Our first priority is to trap and capture the tiger. Shooting (if at all) will be the last resort, " Dr. Niraj told WION. When asked about the next steps after capture, he stated that the tiger would be subjected to a medical examination by expert veterinarians, after which a decision on moving it to a zoo or other similar options would be considered. It is pertinent to note that adult male tigers hunting livestock and other captive prey are very rare, given that they have adequate wild prey in the vast expanse of the ecologically-rich Nilgiri Biosphere reserve, where MTR is situated. <p>“The decision to release the cub or keep it under captivity is to be taken by the NTCA and the Chief Wildlife Warden of Tamil Nadu, after the cub completes close to a week under observation” Ramasubramanian added. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Asked about the whereabouts of the cub’s mother and siblings, he replied that forest staff are looking into whether the cub was abandoned or got lost. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The Anaimalai tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu is home to about 25 tigers and the region where the cub was captured is home to anywhere between 7-10 tigers. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In the wake of a Ranthambore tiger being spotted with wire snare around its neck, the forest department of the Rajasthan government has issued a `Red Alert` till February 28, 2021 for all wildlife reserves, sanctuaries, and parks in the state.</p>

<p>Under the `Red Alert`, all forest officials have been directed to intensify search operations and seek local police assistance to nab hunters and criminals.</p>

<p>Forest department`s senior officer Shruti Sharma gave clear orders that all officers and employees will work seriously in hunting for the hunters during the red alert.</p>

<p>Earlier, a total of 26 tigers have also been reported missing from Ranthambore.</p>
