An Afghan man was arrested in Oklahoma for allegedly plotting an election day "terrorist attack," the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

The man, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, living in Oklahoma City after entering the U.S. in 2021 on a special immigrant visa, was plotting the attack in the name of Islamic State, according to the indictment. The Special Immigrant Visa program, which admits up to 50 people a year, is available to people who worked with the U.S. armed forces or under chief of mission authority as a translator or interpreter in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The indictment did not indicate whether Tawhedi worked as translator or interpreter in Afghanistan. The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tawhedi searched online for information on how to access cameras in the capital, Washington, D.C., and for states that did not require a license to get a firearm, according to the indictment. He also visited the White House and Washington Monument web cameras.

Tawhedi and an underage co-conspirator, who is his brother-in-law, were arrested on Monday after they met with FBI assets to buy two AK-47 rifles and ammunition.

In his post-arrest interview, Tawhedi said the attack planned to target large gatherings of people, during which he and his co-conspirator expected to die as martyrs.

"We will continue to combat the ongoing threat that ISIS and its supporters pose to America’s national security, and we will identify, investigate, and prosecute the individuals who seek to terrorize the American people," U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

Last week, in a "homeland threat assessment," the Department of Homeland Security said the U.S. threat environment was expected to remain high in the coming year due to factors including the 2024 election cycle and the war in Gaza.

"Lone offenders and small groups continue to pose the greatest threat. Meanwhile, foreign terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State and al Qaeda maintain their enduring intent to conduct or inspire attacks in the Homeland," the department said in an assessment released on Oct. 2.

The Islamic State militant organization killed and executed thousands of people in the name of its extreme religious interpretation before it was territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017 and Syria in 2019.

At least six people have been killed and nine others were injured in Jaffa, central Israel after a shooting incident, on Tuesday (Oct 1) evening, reported Times of Israel citing the police. According to the police, a municipal security officer and armed Israeli civilians shot and “neutralised” the two terrorists.&nbsp;

Two terrorists, one of whom was seen armed with an assault rifle, carried out the shooting in Jaffa in south Tel Aviv, according to surveillance camera images.&nbsp;

According to the images, the terrorists were seen coming out of the Tel Aviv light rail. The duo had reportedly shot and stabbed people on the light rail before continuing on foot and attacking people on Jerusalem Street in the city.

One of the terrorists was seen opening fire at the body of a man on the ground.

Police say the shooting in Jaffa is a suspected terror attack.&nbsp;

Law enforcement officials said that the situation was “under control” and the families of the victims had been notified.&nbsp;

Australia's New South Wales police said that they have been investigating a bishop's alleged stabbing during the live stream of a mass in Sydney on Monday (April 15) as a terrorist attack.

Premier Chris Minns said that the decision to investigate it as a terrorist attack was taken on Tuesday (April 16).&nbsp;

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said that they have established a strike force to investigate the incident.&nbsp;

“This is a major and serious criminal investigation. It is crucial that New South Wales police are able to devote their resources and intelligence as well as officers to the investigation of this crime," said Minns, on Tuesday.

After the prominent Orthodox Christian leader was stabbed at the church's altar, hundreds of people got on the streets and clashed with the police in western Sydney on Monday night.

<h2>How did the stabbing incident occur in church?</h2>

The stabbing incident took place at the Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, Sydney.

In the incident, at least four people were stabbed, however, the police confirmed that none of them suffered life-threatening injuries. The incident led to unrest.

As hundreds of people clashed with the police officials after the incident, two of them suffered injuries and 20 police vehicles suffered damages.

Police Chief Commissioner Karen Webb said the police are hunting down those who were involved in the riots and called their actions "unacceptable".

A crowd of people then “converged on that area and began to turn on police”, said Webb. According to the police, the crowd, which was initially made up of around 50 people, grew to approximately 500.&nbsp;

“People used what was available to them in the area, including bricks, concrete palings, to assault police, and throw missiles at police and police equipment, and police vehicles," stated the police.

Few police officers suffered injuries and were taken to hospital overnight, said Webb.

“That is unacceptable and those that were involved in that riot can expect a knock at the door. It might not be today. It might not be tomorrow. But we’ll find you and we’ll come and arrest you. That is totally unacceptable," he said.&nbsp;

The incident occurred a day after&nbsp;40-year-old Joel Cauchi created chaos and panic amid the crowd in the Westfield Bondi Junction complex in Sydney as he&nbsp;stabbed six&nbsp;people - out of which five were women - using a long blade.

The Indian national killed in Israel has been identified as Patnibin Maxwell from Kollam in Kerala. His mortal remains were identified in Ziv hospital, PTI quoted official sources as saying.

Two other injured nationals, Bush Joseph George and Paul Melvin were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment, they said.

"George was taken to the Beilinson hospital in Petah Tikva after suffering injuries on face and body. He underwent an operation, is recovering well, and has been kept under observation. He could speak with his family in India," an official source told PTI.

Melvin was also hospitalised at Ziv Hospital in the northern Israeli city of Safed with slight injuries. He is from the Idukki district of Kerala.

Turkish police on Tuesday shot dead two assailants from a leftist organisation, branded "terrorists" by authorities, who attacked a security checkpoint outside Istanbul's main court, killing one person and injuring five, officials said.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the assailants were members of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) -- a fringe leftist group that has staged periodic attacks in Turkey since the 1980s.&nbsp;

The DHKP-C issued no initial claim of responsibility.&nbsp;

The group, which is considered a terrorist organisation by the United States, has been fighting US influence in the Middle East and across the world.

In 2014, Washington offered a $3 million reward for the capture of the group's leaders.

"I congratulate our security forces, who eliminated the treacherous attack with timely intervention," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in televised remarks.

"Two terrorists, one a woman and the other a man, were neutralised."

Erdogan said the attack injured three police and three civilians, one of whom died later.

A witness told AFP the assailants opened fire on police after a brief altercation at a checkpoint leading to a main entrance to the sprawling building, which has been used for some of Turkey's biggest trials.

"A conflict broke out at the exit gate. I saw two people, a man and a woman, shooting at the police. The male was shot first. Then the woman fired a few more shots. They shot her," said 25-year-old Mahir Yildiz.

"I heard 20-25 gunshots. There was great panic and fear at that moment. We didn't know which way to go. The police blocked the entrance and exit and gathered everyone inside".

Police sealed off the courthouse entrances as a security precaution.

'Heroic police'

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said "heroic police officers prevented a treacherous attack", adding that prosecutors had launched a "multi-faceted investigation".&nbsp;

Turkey has begun to emerge from a violent spell which started a decade ago, when it was hit by repeated bombings and other attacks linked to jihadist fighters and Kurdish militants.

Although those attacks have largely eased, Istanbul and the capital Ankara remain on high alert.

Last month, one man was shot dead by two gunmen who opened fire inside a Catholic church in Istanbul.&nbsp;

The attack was claimed by Islamic State group jihadists.

Koulpelogo was the scene of another deadly attack on August 7, when around twenty people were killed in Nohao near the town of Bittou, according to security and local sources.

In mid-July, Burkina Faso's transitional president Captain Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a September 2022 coup, deplored the "increasingly recurrent attacks against civilians", saying the jihadists were displaying "cowardice".

The apparent motive for the country's two coups in recent years was anger at failures to stem a jihadist insurgency since it spilled over from neighbouring Mali in 2015.

Six Israeli citizens were injured in a terror attack in the West Bank settlement city of Ma’ale Adumim on Tuesday.&nbsp;

As of Wednesday morning, five of the victims were still in the hospital, including one in serious condition who had to undergo surgery for the injuries.

<h2>The attack</h2>

As per Times of Israel report quoting law enforcement officials, a Palestinian terrorist opened fire at a group of people, including diners at a burger restaurant in a plaza outside a main shopping mall in the settlement.&nbsp;

The terrorist, while attempting to flee the scene, was shot dead by an off-duty police officer.

Among the injured, one victim remains in serious but stable condition, another is in moderate but stable condition, and one was released from the hospital on Tuesday evening, said the police statement.&nbsp;

Three others, including a 14-year-old boy, are in light-to-moderate condition at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, reports the publication.

<h2>Terrorist identified</h2>

Times of Israel reports that the terrorist has been identified by the Shin Bet security agency as 20-year-old Mohannad Muhammad Suleiman al-Mazra'a from the nearby West Bank town of al-Azariya.&nbsp;

He reportedly worked as a cleaner at a local community centre in Ma'ale Adumim and had a permit to work in West Bank settlements but not on the Israeli side of the Green Line.&nbsp;

An unverified recording attributed to the terrorist is being circulated on Palestinian social media. In it, he claims to have no affiliation with any faction.

Footage of the incident shows the terrorist, wearing a fluorescent yellow vest, opening fire at people from within bushes behind a bus stop. He can then be seen fleeing down a road, where he was shot by the Border Police officer.

Talking to Channel 12, the officer who is yet to be identified said: "At first I wasn’t sure if he was the terrorist, but I cocked my weapon and yelled at him to freeze. He didn't and started shooting at me." The off-duty police officer returned fire and stopped the attack.

Belgian police on Thursday arrested seven people suspected of supporting the Islamic State (IS) group and plotting a "terrorist attack", prosecutors said.

Almost all the suspects are ethnic Chechens, and three of them possess Belgian nationality, prosecutors said in a statement.&nbsp;

"The exact target of the planned attack has not yet been determined," they said.

Police, backed by elite units, raided nine addresses in several towns in western Belgium in an operation led by an investigating judge specialised in terrorism cases.

The judge will decide "at a later stage" if there is sufficient evidence to charge the suspects, the statement said.

"Possible charges are attempted terrorist assassination, participation in the activities of a terrorist group and preparation of a terrorist attack," it said.

Prosecutors added that all seven arrested "are suspected of preparing a terrorist attack in Belgium".

They all "belong to a group of strong supporters of the IS".

A spokesman for the federal prosecutors' office, Eric Van Duyse, told AFP that "they apparently intended to target an institution located in Belgium" and had been "actively searching for weapons".

The police raids took place in the city of Ghent and the smaller towns of Roeselare, Menen, Ostend and Wevelgem.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for suicide bombings in Belgium on March 22, 2016 that targeted Brussels' airport and the capital's metro, killing 32 people and wounding hundreds.

Those bombings occurred months after the November 2015 attacks in Paris that were planned by the same IS cell and which killed 130 people.

Chechnya, a republic in Russia's North Caucasus region, has a predominantly Muslim population.&nbsp;

It is ruled by pro-Kremlin strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, who supports Russian President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine and who has sent his militia there to fight.
