Also read: Coronavirus cases in US top 6 million; Mexico’s toll surpasses 64,000 Tedros said that opening up without control of the virus would be a "recipe for disaster". However, he also noted that many people are getting tired of restrictions and want to return to normality after eight months of the new coronavirus. "We want to see children returning to school and people returning to work places, but we want to see it done safely," Tedros told a news conference. "No country can just pretend the pandemic is over," he said. "The reality is this virus spreads easily. Opening up without control is a recipe for disaster." As the number of Covid-19 cases continues to surge, the virus epicentre has shifted to India even as cases topped 6 million and 7 million in the United States and the Latin American region respectively. As many as 25,377,704 people around the world have been diagnosed with Covid-19. While more than 17,700,781 have recovered, 850,149 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 6,173,229. cases. It is followed by Brazil, which has 3,862,311. Coronavirus cases in the United States, the world’s worst-hit nation, topped 6 million on Sunday as many states in the US’s Midwest region started reporting new surges since the last month. This also comes as school and universities started reopening across the states. (Inputs from agencies)

Opening up without controlling COVID-19 would be a 'recipe for disaster': WHO

World Health Organization(WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today that the "pandemic is a reminder that health and the economy are inseparable."

Tedros said that corruption of personal protective equipment (PPE) in South Africa amounted to "murder", "Any type of corruption is unacceptable, he said, adding," However, corruption related to PPE... for me it's actually murder. Because if health workers work without PPE, we're risking their lives. And that also risk the lives of the people they serve."

"So it's criminal and it's murder and it has to stop." South Africa has been hit by a huge corruption scandal involving masks and PPE which have been allegedly been stolen with health workers deprived of basic essentials to fight the virus.

Tedros said, "so-called lockdowns enabled many countries to suppress transmission and take the pressure off their health systems. But lockdowns are not a long-term solution for any country."

"Every person, family, community and nation must make their own decisions, based on the level of risk where they live," Tedros asserted.

"We hope to finish this pandemic before less than two years," Tedros said. Tedros said compared to 1918 during the time of the Spanish flu the world is at a disadvantage due to its "globalisation, closeness, connectedness" allowing the virus to spread rapidly but said that by "utilising the available tools to the maximum and hoping that we can have additional tools like vaccines, I think we can finish it in a shorter time than the 1918 flu."

Tedros called New Zealand's case a "global exemplar" after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern celebrated 100 days with no community transmission.

However, WHO'S health emergencies programme head Michael Ryan warned that the virus has demonstrated no seasonal pattern so far. "take the pressure off the virus, and it will bounce back," he added.

Tedros informed that 50 diagnostics are in evaluation, "including potentially game-changing rapid antigen tests." The WHO chief informed that the first therapy for severe coronavirus - dexamethasone - is in scale-up mode, while adding that "dozens of promising therapies are under analysis".

"My message is crystal clear: suppress, suppress, suppress the virus," Tedros said adding,"if we suppress coronavirus effectively, we can safely open up societies."

"Countries like France, Germany, South Korea, Spain, Italy, and the UK had major outbreaks of the virus but when they took action, they were able to suppress it," the WHO chief asserted. Tedros also noted the steps taken by various countries as the virus spiked, "PM Johnson put areas of northern England under stay at home notifications, as clusters of cases were identified."

"France, President Macron introduced compulsory masking in busy outdoor spaces of Paris in response to an increase in cases." Tedros emphasised that "strong and precise measures" were needed to combat the virus.

Tedros said that "chains of transmission" were broken by rapid case "identification, comprehensive contact tracing, adequate clinical care for patients, physical distancing, mask-wearing and regular cleaning of hands."

Coronavirus has demonstrated no seasonal pattern so far: WHO

A World Health Organization (WHO) team sent to China to launch a probe into the origins of the new coronavirus had "extensive discussions" with Chinese counterparts, including video exchanges with scientists in Wuhan where the outbreak was first detected, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

The final results of the investigation are keenly awaited by scientists and governments around the world, none more so than Washington, which lobbied hard for the mission.

The Trump administration has accused the WHO of being China-centric and plans to leave the agency over its handling of the pandemic.

"The team had extensive discussions with Chinese counterparts and received updates on epidemiological studies, biologic and genetic analysis and animal health research," WHO's Christian Lindmeier told reporters.

The three-week advance mission comprising two specialists in animal health and epidemiology was tasked with laying the groundwork for a broader team of Chinese and international experts that will seek to discover how the virus that causes COVID-19 jumped the species barrier from animals to humans.

Lindmeier did not provide details on the timing or composition of the broader mission.

Terms of reference for the broader mission have been produced together with Chinese authorities in draft form, he said, and were not yet publicly available.

"Many countries that believed they were past the worst are now grappling with new outbreaks. Some that were less affected in the earliest weeks are now seeing escalating numbers of cases and deaths," the WHO chief said.

The UN health body is meeting for the fourth time over the coronaivirus crisis exactly six months since declaring a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

"Although vaccine development is happening at record speed, we must learn to live with this virus, and we must fight it with the tools we have," Tedros said.

The international health body is likely ito maintain the pandemic's status as a PHEIC - its highest level of alarm which was first declared on January 30.

"Many scientific questions have been resolved; many remain to be answered. Early results from serology studies are painting a consistent picture: most of the world's people remain susceptible to this virus, even in areas that have experienced severe outbreaks," Tedros warned.

The pandemic has not only claimed millions of lives, it has hit economies of several big and small nations amid lockdowns and cufews. Europe which is one of the hardest hit due to the virus saw its GDP fall 12.1 per cent and 11.9 per cent across the Union bloc.

The virus has hit over 17 million people, with global daily cases now approaching the 300,000 mark. There have been at least 675,000 fatalities due to the virus.

Coronavirus effect will be felt for decades to come: WHO chief Tedros

The number of global COVID-19 pandemic cases has topped 15 million, with almost 620,000 deaths and almost half of all cases from the US, Brazil and India, the chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the pandemic has changed people's lifestyles and the world has entered a new normal of fighting the pandemic.

"More than fifteen million cases of COVID-19 have now been reported to WHO and almost six hundred twenty thousand deaths. Almost 10 million cases or two thirds of all cases globally are from 10 countries, and almost half of all cases reported so far are from just three countries.''

''The pandemic has already changed the way we live our lives. Part of adjusting [to] the new normal is finding ways to live our lives safely. We must remember that most people are still susceptible to this virus. As long as it's circulating, everyone is at risk," he said.

The coronavirus pandemic hit grim new milestones Thursday, with cases topping four million in the United States and three million in Europe as fresh spikes from Belgium to Tokyo to Melbourne forced new restrictions on citizens.

While EU lawmakers combed through a huge aid package for their economies, the UN called for a basic income for the world's poorest to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and the Red Cross warned of "massive" new migration caused by the economic devastation.

The United States, the hardest-hit country by the virus, added one million new cases in just over two weeks, according to a tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University. In the previous 24 hours alone, the country notched more than 76,000 new cases.

Having recorded more than 144,000 total fatalities, the United States has seen a coronavirus surge, particularly in southern and western states, as Texas, California, Alabama, Idaho and Florida all announced record one-day death tolls.

Meanwhile, the European continent now accounts for a fifth of the world's more than 15 million cases and remains the hardest hit in terms of deaths, with 206,633 out of 627,307 worldwide.

A 750-billion-euro post-coronavirus recovery plan was hammered out at an EU summit this week, where fiscally rigid nations butted heads with hard-hit countries like Spain and Italy that have called for huge aid grants.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro himself tested positive for the virus after dismissing it earlier as flu. The Brazilian president is currently in quarantine.

Coronavirus in Brazil has plateaued, opportunity to suppress transmission: WHO

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today almost 80 per cent coronavirus cases were reported from just 10 countries, and 50 per cent come from just two countries referring to the Americas.

Many countries headed in wrong, mixed messages from leaders undermining COVID-19 response: WHO chief Tedros

As two WHO experts are currently en route to meet Chinese officials to learn about the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that in the last six weeks coronavirus cases have more than doubled worldwide.

"There are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought back under control," the WHO chief said, adding, "and some of these examples are Italy, Spain and South Korea, and even in Dharavi – a densely packed area in the megacity of Mumbai – a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus."

Tedros said the WHO officials travelling to China currently will help lay the groundwork for the WHO-led international mission to understand the origins of the virus and meet fellow scientists and learn about the progress made in understanding the animal reservoir for COVID-19 and how the disease jumped between animals to humans.

"Across all walks of life, we are all being tested to the limit," Tedros said, "from countries where there is exponential growth to places that are loosening restrictions and now starting to see cases rise."

"Only aggressive action combined with national unity and global solidarity can turn this pandemic around," the WHO chief said.

Meanwhile, Dr Mike Ryan, head of WHO's emergencies programme, said it was unlikely that the new coronavirus would be eliminated.

"In the current situation it is unlikely we can eradicate this virus," Ryan said while stressing that "by extinguishing clusters of infection, the world could potentially avoid the worst of having second peaks and having to move backwards in terms of lockdown".

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that it was setting up an independent panel to review its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the response by governments.

WHO sets up panel to review handling of coronavirus pandemic

The World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today that the coronavirus pandemic has been accelerating and has "clearly not reached the peak".

"While the number of deaths appears to have levelled off globally, in reality, some countries have made significant progress in reducing the number of deaths, while in other countries deaths are on the rise," Tedros said.

The UN health body said that WHO experts will be travelling to China shortly to prepare scientific plans with the Chinese counterparts to identify the source of the COVID-19. WHO said the mission would be to advance the understanding of animal hosts for COVID-19 and ascertain how the virus jumped from animals to humans.

During the press conference, the WHO said that there was "emerging evidence" on the airborne transmission of the new coronavirus.

"We acknowledge that there is emerging evidence in this field... therefore we believe that we have to be open to this evidence and understand its implications," WHO's professor Benedetta Allegranzi said.

WHO said so far there have been 11.4 million coronavirus cases and over 535, 000 lives lost.

The World Health Organization also sent best wishes to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro who was detected with the virus.

"No-one is special in that regard: we are all potentially exposed," WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan said, adding, "We wish Mr Bolsonaro and his family the best."

World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom said on Wednesday he expected the number of novel coronavirus cases around the world, now at about 9.3 million, to reach 10 million next week.

Tedros also told a news briefing he backed Saudi Arabia's decision to ban pilgrims from abroad from attending the annual Haj pilgrimage to help limit the spread of the virus.

The comments by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus comes even as the Trump administration said the United States would end their relationship over the U.N. agency's handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Ghebreyesus said that he had met with U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar last week, adding it was a very good discussion. However, he said that did not mean the body was receiving money directly from the country, which has been its top donor, as part of those efforts. "It's not about the money. The relationship (with the United States) is more important," he said at a virtual briefing on Wednesday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday said that the coronavirus situation in the world is deteriorating and warned nations against complacency.

The WHO has said that it has recorded the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases after a surge in the American continents.

Coronavirus has infected over 7 million people globally, as per data from the Johns Hopkins University. Currently, 7,006,436 people have had the virus, while 402,699 people have lost their lives to the pandemic, which went global six months ago.

The five worst-affected countries according to JHU tracker are US (1,940,468), Brazil (691,758), Russia (467,073), United Kingdom (287,621), followed by India (257,486).

The WHO has urged protestors around to world to do it safely keeping the pandemic in mind.

"Although the situation in Europe is improving, globally it is worsening," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference in Geneva.

"More than 100,000 cases have been reported on nine of the past 10 days. Yesterday, more than 136,000 cases were reported -- the most in a single day so far."

Ghebreyesus said that 75 per cent of these cases came from 10 countries which mostly consist from South America and South Asia.

Tedros warned countries where the situation was improving. He said, "The biggest threat is now complacency", adding that "most people globally are still susceptible to infection".

"More than six months into this pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal," he said.

Mass protests against racism have broken out in the United States and many European countries after the killing of George Floyd. These protests have sparked fears of a second wave of the virus.

To which WHO chief said: "WHO fully supports equality and the global movement against racism. We reject discrimination of all kinds."

"We encourage all those protesting around the world to do so safely.

"As much as possible, keep at least one metre from others, clean your hands, cover your cough and wear a mask if you attend a protest."

"Stay home if you are sick and contact a health care provider," he added.

Coronavirus situation around the world 'worsening', warns WHO

The World Health Organization on Friday updated guidance on wearing facemasks during the coronavirus pandemic, encouraging their use in crowded situations in places where the new coronavirus is widespread.

As the deadly virus continues to spread, the WHO changed its stance on who should wear a mask, when it should be worn and what it should be made of.

"Governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission and physical distancing is difficult, such as on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"In areas with community transmission, we advise that people aged 60 years or over, or those with underlying conditions, should wear a medical mask in situations where physical distancing is not possible," he added.

The WHO also issued new guidance on the composition of non-medical fabric masks, advising that they should consist of at least three layers of different material.

But Tedros stressed that masks were only one part of an effective strategy to suppress the virus and could lead people into a false sense of security.

He said they were not a replacement for physical distancing and hand hygiene.

"Masks alone will not protect you from COVID-19," he told a virtual news conference.

"Find, isolate, test and care for every case, and to trace and quarantine every contact. That is what we know works. That is every country's best defence against COVID-19."

The novel coronavirus has infected at least 6.6 million people and killed more than 390,000 since the outbreak first emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP.

WHO putting nations at risk by excluding Taiwan from knowledge sharing: US report

So international courts may not be up to the task but the world cannot look the other way as China and its accomplices break the rules like the World Health Organization(WHO).

Could that be India? there's a good chance. India will be taking up the leadership role at the WHO on May 22. New Delhi's nominee is expected to be appointed the chairperson of the WHO's executive board. It is the WHO wing responsible for executing decisions and implementing policies of the health assembly.

India's nomination was unanimously upheld by the WHO's South-East Asia group last year. India will be replacing Japan which will complete its one-year-term and it will hold the post for at least three years.

It implies that the Director-General of the WHO will have to get the chairperson - India - on board for all important decisions. Here are five things that India can and must do to fix the broken system of the UN health body.

Start by asking questions, push for accountability from WHO leadership, why did it buy China's word on the human transmission? Did it downplay or blatantly lie about how lethal the coronavirus was? Why did it declare a pandemic only after the virus had reached 85 countries?

Dr. Tedros sent a WHO delegation to China? what again did it achieve? and why can't the world talk about the place of origin of this virus?

India must begin by asking these questions without hesitation. Second, demand transparency from member countries. Starting with the one that gave the world this virus- China.

Why and on what basis should we trust China's recovery? Why won't it share research with and initial test samples as a WHO member nation? What evidence does Cina have to claim that this virus did not originate in the Wuhan lab? Why shouldn't global experts have access to this lab?

And most importantly, the wet markets - are they back? if they are what are they selling? under what conditions? and what assurance can China give the world that another disease is not waiting to explode? India must insist on the financial independence of the World Health Organization. How much does money talk at this body?

Reports say that contribution by countries in lieu of their membership to the WHO is extremely low. The WHO budget is mostly financed by voluntary contributions. Donations and grants that come from public and private sources. How much does the WHO depend on these 'extra-budgetary resources'? and which private sources are sending money to this body? are they from China?...

Also how much influence do they wield? India must push for Taiwan's inclusion at the World Health Organization. The WHO labels parts of India as Chinese territory but when it comes to Taiwan this body adheres to the One-China principle. Forget praising Taiwan's success story, it doesn't even acknowledge its existence.

India must rally support for Taiwan's observer status at the WHO. Taiwan must be permitted to share its expertise on the pandemic for the simple reason that its response has been the best.

And lastly, conduct an independent international probe on the outbreak which China says it is ready but with "close co-operation with the WHO". A body it already controls.

India must push for a transparent and crystal clear probe on the coronavirus outbreak and the world must not waste time mourning missed chances.

India must take the lead and WHO member nations must extend their support.

So international courts may not be up to the task but the world cannot look the other way as China and its accomplices break the rules like the World Health Organization(WHO).

"The review should be conducted in an open, transparent and inclusive manner at an appropriate time after the pandemic is over," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

Hua said the review should be conducted under the leadership of WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

China has been under global pressure to allow a transparent investigation into the origins of COVID-19 after the virus became a global pandemic leading to deaths of over two million with several European nations including America being the hardest hit.

President Trump has repeatedly called for an investigation, calling in "Wuhan virus" and alleging that WHO has a "China bias". Trump has said the virus originated from a lab in Wuhan, a claim repeated by US secretary of state Mike Pompeo, however, China has dismissed the allegation outright.

Australia, Canada, the UK and Germany have also called for independent investigation in the virus with several experts speculating that the virus may originated much earlier than China announced on December 31, 2019 to the WHO.

The virus has claimed 4,633 lives in China with 82,886 cases of infection, even as the global death toll has climbed to over 269,584 and over 3.8 million infections with the United States being the hardest hit with over 75,000 fatalities and over a million infection cases.

After the COVID-19 pandemic is over, ready for review under WHO: China

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has once again defended the agency saying that it had sounded the highest level of alarm over the novel coronavirus earlier on and not all countries had listened to its advice. Watch report.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: 'WHO acted quickly and decisively' on COVID-19 alert

WHO's chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus accused countries of disregarding WHO's public health emergency warning on January 30. Watch report.

Coronavirus Pandemic: 'World should've listened to us' says WHO Chief

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on January 30, WHO triggered its "highest" global emergency alert by declaring COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. "The world should have listened to WHO then, carefully," Tedros told a virtual press conference.

President Trump had stopped funds to the UN health body over "mismanaging" the virus earlier while alleging that it had a "China bais".

However, Tedros said the WHO had given "sound advice from the beginning "based on the best science and evidence", however, he added that "we do not have any mandate to force countries to take our advice."

"Every country could have triggered all its public health measures, I think that suffices the importance of listening to WHO's advice," the WHO chief asserted.

"We advised the whole world to implement a comprehensive public health approach, and we said find, test, isolate, and do contact tracing," he said.

"You can check for yourselves: countries who followed that are in a better position than others. This is fact," the WHO chief said, adding "it is up to the countries to reject or accept."

"Each country takes its own responsibility." The global pandemic which has now reached 192 countries has claimed over 206,000 lives worldwide with the United States accounting for over 55,000 lives.

World leaders unite to accelerate COVID-19 tests, vaccine; US stays away from WHO initiative

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday that there was "no evidence" so far to suggest that people who have recovered from novel coronavirus cannot get infected from the same virus again.

The WHO also warned against issuing "immunity passports" or "risk-free certificates" to patients who have recovered, saying the action might lead to increase of the virus's spread as the standard precautions might be ignored.

No evidence that people recovered from coronavirus won't get reinfected: WHO

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will help launch a global initiative on Friday to accelerate work to fight COVID-19, the World Health Organization said, but the United States said it will not take part.

The WHO said late on Thursday it would to announce a "landmark collaboration" on Friday to speed development of safe, effective drugs, tests and vaccines to prevent, diagnose and treat COVID-19.

WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a UN briefing on Friday that Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen would take part in the 1300 GMT announcement, led by WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

British foreign minister Dominic Raab and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres were also to take part, diplomatic sources told Reuters.

"Today is a kind of political commitment from all these partners to make sure that when we have all these new tools no one is left behind, that those who can afford vaccines or therapeutics can buy them and (put) them at the disposal of the population," Chaib said.

US President Donald Trump has lambasted the WHO as being slow to react to the outbreak and being "China-centric" and announced a suspension of funding.

Vaccine trials

More than 2.7 million people have been infected with the disease, which has claimed nearly 190,000 lives since emerging in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, according to a Reuters tally.

More than 100 potential COVID-19 vaccines are being developed, including six already in clinical trials, said Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of the GAVI vaccine alliance, a public-private partnership that leads immunisation campaigns in poor countries.

"We need to ensure that there are enough vaccines for everyone, we are going to need global leadership to identify and prioritise vaccine candidates," he told a separate Geneva news briefing before taking part in the formal WHO announcement.

Global manufacturing capacity must be ramped up ahead of choosing "a winner" vaccine, Berkley said, noting that GAVI and the World Bank were looking at the issue.

"We can't have a repeat of what happened in 2009, the H1N1 vaccine, when there was not enough supply for developing countries or when supply did come it came much later," he said.

Another important questions was how well a vaccine would work in people most at risk from COVID-19, Berkley said.

"How well do they work in the elderly, are they single or multiple dose etc?" he said, noting that older people had weaker immune systems.

World leaders to launch WHO COVID-19 plan, but US won't take part

World Health Organization(WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today that the coronavirus pandemic "will be with us for a long time".

"Make no mistake: we have a long way to go. This virus will be with us for a long time," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said while adding that most people around the world "remain susceptible to COVID-19".

"WHO declared virus emergency at the right time," Tedros asserted, adding that the world "had enough time to respond".

The WHO chief has come in for scathing criticism from the US for its handling of the virus. US President Trump froze funds for the UN health agency accusing it of "mishandling" the virus.

Trump had earlier accused the WHO of having a "China bais".

"COVID-19 is reminding us of a simple but vital truth: we are one species, sharing one planet," the WHO chief said on the occasion of World Earth Day.

The international health body had warned earlier that there was still a long way to go to defeat the COVID-19 epidemic with most countries still in the early stages of dealing with the pandemic even as the director of the US Centers for Disease Control warned Americans to prepare for a ferocious second wave.

With several countries across the world on lockdown from the US, Europe to Asia, the coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage countries even as economies have gone into recession with oil prices plunging.

As a result of the large scale deaths, President Trump said he would stop issuing of green cards for 60 days, but exempted temporary workers.

"It will help put unemployed Americans first in line for jobs as America reopens," he said. "It would be wrong and unjust for Americans to be replaced with immigrant labor flown in from abroad," the US president added.
