In a step forward for the Indian private space sector, SpaceX has launched an Earth-Imaging satellite assembled and tested in India, by a Tata Group firm. The ‘TSAT-1A’ satellite was launched on the Bandwagon-1 mission, which SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket launched from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, United States, at 23:16 UTC on April 7.

A collaborative effort between India’s Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL) and foreign firm Satellogic, the TSAT-1A has been assembled at the Tata group’s Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) facility at Vemagal, Karnataka. In November 2023, TASL and Satellogic had inked a pact to develop and integrate an advanced earth observation satellite.

TSAT-1A is a sub-metre resolution satellite, which means that it produces images where it is possible to clearly distinguish between objects that are less than one metre apart. Satellites that are used for defence and strategic purposes have resolutions in the range of one metre to even 30 centimetres or lower. This helps in clearly distinguishing even the smallest of objects and deriving maximum information from the image.

In the year 2020, the Indian government rolled out reforms in the government-only space sector and permitted private firms to undertake end-to-end space activities. This is a step aimed at increasing India’s overall share in the lucrative global space economy. As part of the reforms, private firms are allowed to design, build and launch their own satellites, rockets, and offer space-based services.

Prior to the reforms, only the Indian government-run space agency was permitted to perform end-to-end space activities, whereas private firms could only supply hardware and provide services to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Aimed at boosting the homegrown industry, startups, and opening it up to foreign entities, the Indian government also recently permitted Foreign Direct Investment in the country’s space sector.

India's Tata group to manufacture iPhones for domestic and global markets

With India’s flag carrier, Air India, revealing its new brand identity in August, the airline is all set to enter a new era in its journey of being a distinct carrier in domestic and international skies.

The arrival of the new logo which features a contemporary design in the colours of gold, red, and purple; replacing the former red and saffron, and speculations about Air India’s famous mascot, the Maharajah retiring, sets the tone for a drastic change that the airline is about to witness in the coming years.

Just like the country it serves, Air India has had a rich history which has changed quite a lot over time. In this story, we trace the journey of India’s flag carrier that started out with a transporter of mail to India’s national carrier owned by the Indian government to how it was privatised and taken over by the TATA Group.

From a Transporter of Mail to a Transporter of Passengers

Air India's remarkable journey from being a mail carrier to a global passenger airline is a testament to the vision and determination of its founder, JRD Tata. It all began in 1932 when Tata Air Services was founded. Initially focused on transporting mail for Imperial Airways, the airline quickly expanded its operations to include passenger services. Within its first year, Tata Air Services had not only transported 10.7 tons of mail but had also carried 155 passengers, showcasing its efficiency and punctuality.

In 1938, the airline was renamed Tata Airlines and took its first step into international aviation by adding Colombo, Sri Lanka, to its route map. The profits grew tenfold by 1937, underscoring its success. However, World War II temporarily halted civilian aviation as Tata Airlines' planes were repurposed for military use.

Post-independence, the Indian government acquired a 49 per cent stake in the airline, which was then rebranded as Air India. In 1948, Air India made its historic inaugural long-haul flight from Mumbai to London Heathrow, marking a significant milestone in its transformation into a global airline.

From TATA Airlines to Air India

The evolution from Tata Airlines to Air India was a pivotal moment in the airline's history. Despite the government's nationalization of Air India in the 1950s, JRD Tata returned as its chairman to ensure that the airline's high standards were maintained. His commitment to excellence and dedication to Indian aviation was unwavering.

Air India continued its modernisation and expansion efforts, acquiring cutting-edge aircraft like the Boeing 707 in 1960 and the Boeing 747 in 1971. These acquisitions marked the beginning of a new era, enabling Air India to serve long-haul destinations with unparalleled comfort and efficiency. The airline expanded its global footprint, adding destinations across Europe and Asia, becoming a familiar sight in airports around the world.

However, in 1977, JRD Tata was removed as chairman, and Air India came under government control, marking a significant shift in its management and operations.

Merger with domestic carrier – Indian Airlines

The merger of Air India with Indian Airlines in 2007 was a significant development in the history of Indian aviation. It aimed to consolidate both carriers under the Air India brand, streamlining their operations and creating a more competitive and efficient entity. The merger brought together two distinct facets of Indian aviation—Air India's international operations and Indian Airlines' domestic network.

While the merger held promise, challenges soon emerged. The aviation landscape in India was changing rapidly with the emergence of new private carriers like Jet Airways. Despite Air India's historical successes, it faced growing competition and financial difficulties. The merged entity struggled to overcome these challenges, leading to a complex financial situation that persisted for almost two decades.

Mounting debt

Air India, once India's aviation pride, faced a crippling debt burden of Rs 61,000 crore. However, the government retained a portion of the debt, leaving Air India's finances in dire straits with just Rs 2,750 crore in cash.

The airline's financial crisis stemmed from a series of missteps, including an ill-advised order of 111 Boeing aircraft driven by political considerations, leading to equity erosion. Flawed aircraft configurations, the inability to offer direct flights, and the failed merger with Indian Airlines compounded its challenges. Labour unions secured extravagant salaries, diminishing cost competitiveness, while poor adaptability in a liberalised economy and leadership changes further aggravated the problems.

TATA’s takeover

The Tata Group finally assumed control of Air India in January 2022, embarking on a mission to revive the struggling carrier. This transition marked a significant shift in the airline's ownership.

Tata's ambitious vision for Air India includes a massive order for 470 aircraft, the largest in the airline's history. With a portfolio that includes Air India, Air India Express, AIX Connect (AirAsia India), and the joint venture Vistara with Singapore Airlines, the Tata Group is working towards merging Air India Express and AIX Connect, along with integrating Vistara into Air India. This strategic consolidation aims to optimise resources and streamline operations within the group.

TCS said, “TCS will leverage its contextual knowledge, deep domain expertise, proprietary platforms, vast partner ecosystem and future-ready talent pool to help JLR enhance its digital capacity; transform, simplify, and manage its Digital estate; and build a new, future-ready digital core that will support its business transformation.” Nigel Blenkinsop, Executive Director, Enterprise Performance & Quality, JLR, said: “TCS' breadth of capabilities and deep understanding of our business will further enhance our ability to transform and simplify our Digital estate at pace, ensuring we can deliver a modern luxury experience for our clients." Top Indian tech service providers have recently renewed several contracts worth millions or billions of dollars, despite concerns that client spending may be declining in the important US and EU (European Union) markets. In June, British pension fund Nest and TCS agreed on a $1.1 billion contract. Rivals like Infosys signed three contracts between June and August, on the other hand, HCL Technologies, scored a $2.1 billion deal with Verizon last month. Report: Tata in talks to buy 51% stake in snack maker Haldiram's

Popular Indian snack brand Haldiram’s joined Tata Consumer Products to deny a report by the Reuters news agency that it is considering selling its 51 per cent stake to the Indian conglomerate.

In a statement, Haldiram's said, "We categorically deny recent reports of a 51 per cent stake sale and wish to clarify that we are not engaged in any discussions with Tata Consumer Products."

Tata Group also denies

The clarification came hours after Tata Consumer Products (TCPL) denied reports of buying a majority stake in the popular snack brand.

"The company is not in negotiations as reported" to acquire Haldiram's, TCPL said in a regulatory filing.

The filing was in response to a clarification sought by the NSE and the BSE regarding the reports.

"Tata Consumer Products does not comment on market speculation," a company spokesperson said earlier in the day.

Following the clarification, Tata Consumer Products witnessed a decline of over 2.60 per cent in its share price.

The Reuters report had initially claimed that Tata Group's consumer unit was engaging in discussions to purchase a majority stake in Haldiram's and that it expressed concerns about the $10 billion valuation sought by the snack manufacturer.

The report quoted anonymous sources with direct knowledge of the discussions to substantiate its claim. It further said that Tata found Haldiram's asking price to be quite high.

Meanwhile, there are speculations that several private equity firms, including Bain Capital, are also in talks with Haldiram's regarding the sale of a 10 per cent stake.

Haldiram’s denies reports of selling majority stake to Tata Group

Tata Group's consumer unit is in talks to buy at least 51% of popular Indian snack food maker Haldiram's but is not comfortable with the $10 billion valuation sought, two people briefed on the matter said.

If successfully concluded, a deal would see the Indian conglomerate directly compete with Pepsi and billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail.

Haldiram's, a household name in India, is also talking with private equity firms including Bain Capital about the sale of a 10% stake, they said.

Tata Consumer Products, which owns UK tea company Tetley and has a partnership with Starbucks in India, has baulked at the $10 billion valuation given that Haldiram's annual revenue is around $1.5 billion, the sources said.

Tata Consumer shares surged and closed nearly 4% higher in Mumbai trade after Reuters reported news of the talks.

A third person with direct knowledge of the discussions said Tata wants to buy more than 51% but has told Haldiram's that its "ask is very high."

The potential acquisition represents an exciting opportunity for Tata, the person said, adding: "Tata (Consumer) is seen as a tea company. Haldiram's is huge in the consumer space and has a wide market share."

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity.

A spokesperson for Tata Consumer Products said it "does not comment on market speculation". Haldiram's Chief Executive Krishan Kumar Chutani and Bain declined to comment.

Family-run Haldiram's traces its origins back to a tiny shop founded in 1937 and is well-known for its crispy "bhujia" snack sold for as little as 10 rupees across mom-and-pop stores.

It has almost 13% share of India's $6.2 billion savoury snack market, according to Euromonitor International. Pepsi, famous for its Lay's chips, also has around 13%.

Haldiram's snacks are also sold in overseas markets like Singapore and the United States. The company has around 150 restaurants selling local food, sweets and western cuisine.

Purchasing Haldiram's would significantly expand Tata's consumer products reach.

"If you want to suddenly grow big in size, no one better to provide access than Haldiram's. No other brand attacks packaged food, and food services, with equal panache," said Ankur Bisen, head of consumer and retail at Indian consultancy Technopak.

Tata's consumer unit, which also sells salt, pulses and mineral water, had revenue of $1.7 billion in the past financial year. It is a relatively small part of the Tata Group, whose businesses span autos, aviation and hotels and which had combined revenue last year of some $144 billion.

Haldiram's Chairman Manohar Lal Agrawal last year told CNBC TV18 in an interview the company wanted to attract private equity investors and debut on the stock market in 2-3 years.

Haldiram's - which has multiple registered companies in the country - had revenue of at least $981 million in the financial year ended March 2022, according to regulatory filings. The first two sources, however, said its revenue is now close to $1.5 billion and annual operating profit is around $200 million.

The $10 billion valuation sought by Haldiram's for the deal translates to 6.6 times its annual revenue of $1.5 billion, sources said.

Haldiram's smaller listed rival in India, Bikaji Foods International, has a market capitalisation of $1.5 billion, six times its annual revenue. Shares in Bikaji also rose on Wednesday, climbing around 3 per cent during trade.

Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) achieved a significant milestone as it completed the delivery of 200 empennage structures for the 'C-130J Super Hercules' military aircraft. The empennage is the name given to the entire tail section of the aircraft, including both the horizontal and vertical stabilizers, the rudder and the elevator.

As a combined unit, it works similar to the feather on the arrow, helping guide the aircraft. The 'C-130J Super Hercules' is the current variant of the legacy C-130 Hercules and is operated by 21 nations.

According to the firm, their facility in Adibatla, Hyderabad, in India, has the distinction of being the single global source of C-130J empennage assemblies that are installed on all new Super Hercules aircraft produced in Marietta, Georgia, in the United States. C-130J Empennage assemblies produced by TLMAL include the aircraft’s horizontal and vertical stabilizers along with leading edges and tip assemblies.

“The C-130J is known as the world’s workhorse not just for its large global presence, but also for its international supply chain partners including TLMAL,” said Rod McLean, vice president and general manager of the Air Mobility & Maritime Missions line of business at Lockheed Martin.

“Each TLMAL-produced empennage literally helps the mighty Super Hercules take flight to support critical missions that impact lives and make history. While it takes many parts and pieces to build an empennage, it also requires a group of highly dedicated and skilled individuals" he said.

Empennages made by TLMAL are included in C-130Js operated by seven nations, including India, said the firm. A tactical airlifter, C-130Js perform search and rescue, peacekeeping, combat delivery, maritime patrol, special operations, aerial refuelling, commercial cargo transport, medical evacuation and humanitarian response missions.

"Today, we take immense pride in reaching the momentous milestone of producing the 200th empennage for C-130J right here in India," said Sukaran Singh, CEO and managing director, Tata Advanced Systems Limited. In March 2023, Lockheed Martin and Tata Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding to begin the implementation of fighter wing production at their Hyderabad facility. The company had said, TLMAL demonstrated the capability to produce one of the most technologically complex aerostructures — a fuel-carrying, 9G (force enduring), 12,000 hour (endurance), interchangeable/replaceable fighter wing.

ISRO-built satellite to bring 300 more channels on Tata Play; include Andamans, Northeast in coverage

A recent Economic Times report said that the Maharajah will no longer serve as Air India's mascot as the Tata Group is planning to re-vamp and redesign the airline. The report indicated that a large number of international passengers may not be able to connect with Maharajah, who wears a turban and has a large moustache.

Sources also said that as a part of its rebranding exercise, the Air India is developing a new colour palette consisting of red, white and purple instead of its former red and white. The addition of purple comes from Vistara's palette which is said to merge with Air India.

Initially designed for an in-flight memo pad, Air India's iconic mascot was inspired by the image of Syed Wajid Ali, an industrialist from Pakistan. It was conceived by the airline's Commercial Director, Bobby Kooka, the airline's art director and publicity head Jal Cowasji, and illustrator Umesh Rao of the Bombay-based advertising firm J Walter Thompson.

As the Maharajah took to the skies, the mascot instantly became a highly recognised symbol of Indian luxury and hospitality with his potbelly, an enormous curling moustache, a striped turban and a closed-eye calm look on his face.

The Maharajah was later featured on posters made by a group of designers at Air India's in-house art studio. In later years, foreign artists and designers were also commissioned, which increased the Maharajah's visual appeal. The most recognisable travel posters created by the airline between 1946 and 1972 were included in Rogue's Gallery, a collection released by Air India in 1977. Some witty ones that even piqued politicians were included in this collection.

A few iconic posters feature the Maharaja laying down his jacket to welcome a pretty passenger onboard and rescuing a mermaid from the sea in Sydney. A few other notable ones include the Maharajah joining a line of capuchin friars in Rome and playing the tabla among the Beatles in London.

“He can be a lover boy in Paris, a sumo wrestler in Tokyo, a pavement artist, a Red Indian, a monk... he can effortlessly flirt with the beauties of the world. And most importantly, he can get away with it all. Simply because he is the Maharajah," Forbes India quoted the late Kooka as saying.

A recent Economic Times report said that the Maharajah will no longer serve as Air India's mascot as the Tata Group is planning to re-vamp and redesign the airline.

Even though the airline battled with rising debts and countless inefficiencies, the Maharajah continued to make his appearances with grace. However, it is now time for him to leave. Tata Group, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, is set to unveil its plans for a prominent electric car battery factory in Somerset, UK, in a significant boost to the country's automotive industry. The plant is expected to generate up to 9,000 jobs.

The official announcement is expected on Wednesday (July 19), with reports suggesting substantial government subsidies have been provided to support the project, reported the BBC.

Creating job opportunities and transforming the industry

The investment in the battery factory could potentially generate up to 9,000 jobs in the Bridgwater area.

Notably, this initiative holds immense importance for the automotive sector as it shifts from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles to the production of electric cars.

Addressing the need for strong industrial strategy

Criticism has been directed towards the UK government for its perceived lack of a clear industrial strategy and for falling behind the US and EU in attracting investments in low-carbon technologies.

The Tata battery investment is expected to serve as a catalyst, encouraging further investments in battery manufacturing within the UK.

Existing battery manufacturing landscape and the EU comparison

Presently, the UK has only one operational battery plant located near Nissan's Sunderland factory, with another facility in the early stages of development in Northumberland.

In contrast, the European Union boasts 35 operating, under-construction, or planned battery plants. Closing this gap in battery production capacity is crucial for the UK.

The UK government has outlined ambitious net zero goals, including a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars starting in 2030.

The establishment of the Somerset factory will facilitate the supply of batteries for a new lineup of electric Jaguar and Land Rover models, supporting the country's transition to cleaner transportation.

Choosing the UK over Spain

While Tata Group, an Indian multinational, did consider an alternative site in Spain for the battery plant, its decision to select the UK is seen as a major victory for the British government. This choice reinforces the attractiveness of the UK as an investment destination for global companies.

Reports suggest that a substantial level of subsidies, in the form of cash grants, energy cost discounts, and funding for training and research, has been provided to Tata for this project.

The specific details and size of the incentive package have not been disclosed. Furthermore, the UK government is expected to offer approximately £300 million (over US$39 million) to subsidise, upgrade, and decarbonise Tata's steel operations, including the Port Talbot plant in South Wales.
