Tamil Nadu Elections 2026: Election Campaigns Intensify Across West Bengal & Tamil Nadu

While the Delimitation bill is being discussed in the Indian Parliament, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin continues to vehemently oppose it. On the first day of the special session of Parliament, BJP's top two leaders, Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, had offered assurances over Tamil Nadu's representation not being reduced. Unwilling to take these assurances at face value, Stalin said, "Their words say one thing, their actions reveal another. The Bill they have introduced is nothing but a calculated deception. We reject it outright. It cannot be trusted. It will not be accepted".Voicing out his suspicion about the Bill, Stalin said that the sweeping powers granted to the Delimitation Commission under this Bill make one thing clear. At any time, in any manner they choose, they can alter the representation of states to suit their political interests. This so-called legislation is a carefully crafted trap, loaded with dangerous intent. This Bill must not be rushed through in haste. "The Union Government must withdraw it in full. If they attempt to bulldoze it through Parliament, emboldened by the numbers they have stitched together, and in complete disregard of our opposition, they will face the consequences in Tamil Nadu," he added. Tamil Nadu goes to the polls on April 23rd, where the AIADMK-BJP front is taking on the front led by the ruling DMK. Stalin is portraying his fight against Delimitation as a battle for cooperative federalism, state rights, which have been core poll planks of the DMK.Citing history, Stalin recalled how India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had assured that Hindi would never be imposed on non-Hindi states (specifically Tamil Nadu), and he honoured that promise as long as he lived. The present Union regime, however, speaks of protecting state rights even as it systematically dismantles them piece by piece. What we demand is clear. The same constitutional safeguard that former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee provided by freezing delimitation through constitutional amendment must be restored. The Union BJP Government must listen to the voice of Tamil Nadu, Stalin said.Meanwhile, Stalin has been facing attacks in Tamil Nadu from AIADMK Chief and Leader of Opposition Edappadi Palaniswami, whose party is allied with the BJP. EPS attacked the DMK for "deliberately misleading the people to create fear and confusion". The Chief Minister walks into a meeting wearing a black shirt as if Tamil Nadu has been wronged. What kind of leadership is this? When facts change, responsible leaders correct themselves. But Stalin chooses drama over truth, EPS said.Pointing out that Tamil Nadu’s Parliamentary seat share has increased from 7.18 per cent to 7.23 per cent, with 59 seats now allocated, the former Chief Minister said, “The numbers are clear. The Centre has acted equitably. The demand we raised has been met. Now who will answer for the lies spread across the state?” he asked.

As the Indian Parliament convenes for a special session to take up the proposed amendment on Delimitation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin continued to express his staunch opposition to Delimitation. He had been citing that Delimitation would be an "injustice against Southern states". On Thursday(April 16th), adorned in a black shirt to register his protest, Stalin hoisted a black flag and burnt a copy of the Delimitation bill, in the presence of party cadre in Namakkal. Stalin has been voicing out against Delimitation and had even convened a meeting of Chief Ministers from Opposition-ruled states that are apprehensive of the impact of Delimitation.

Addressing an election rally in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, Stalin campaigned for candidates from Ramanathapuram, Mudukulathur, Paramakudi and Thiruvadana constituencies. He highlighted past development works and said his government had resolved long-standing drinking water issues in the region.’ Seeking voter support, Stalin said the DMK government had delivered welfare and development schemes across the state. “We asked for votes last time with pride… I have come to ask for votes again with that feeling. To take Tamil Nadu to the next level, a Dravidian Model 2.0 government should be formed,” he said. He asserted that the DMK government had taken the state to new heights and was implementing pioneering schemes for the people. Stalin also attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, warning against the “double engine” model. “If the BJP enters Tamil Nadu… the state will be in danger. The BJP and its slave AIADMK should be driven out completely,” he said. "People tell me whether Tamil Nadu or Delhi will win this election. Just as the Tamil Nadu team defeated Delhi in the IPL cricket match held yesterday, the DMK alliance will defeat Delhi in this assembly election. This is what the people should decide. It should be proven at every polling booth on April 23," he added. Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23, with counting on May 4. The main contest is between the DMK-led alliance and the AIADMK-led NDA, while actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to debut with his party, potentially making it a three-cornered contest.

20:26 hours, April 6th, 2026, is a moment that will remain etched in national history, as India's 500 Megawatt Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, successfully attained first criticality, which is the start of a controlled fission chain reaction. This marked India's long-awaited foray into the second stage of its three-stage Nuclear power programme. Envisioned in 1954 by eminent physicist Homi Jehangir Bhabha, India's three-stage Nuclear power programme is aimed at achieving energy security using the country's limited Uranium and vast Thorium reserves.A reactor going critical is the culmination of a long process; the PFBR has been in the works for more than two decades. Usually, there is a gap of several months between fuel being loaded into a nuclear reactor and the reactor going critical. During the months after fuel loading, a series of engineering and physics tests are carried out to validate a host of parameters. While criticality is a major step in the commencement of operations at a nuclear power plant, it does not mean that it has begun generating power at its full potential. Power generation is ramped up gradually in a phased manner. The technology development and design of PFBR was indigenously done by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), an R&D Centre of the Indian Government's Department of Atomic Energy. The PFBR was built and commissioned by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI), a Government firm. India's top Nuclear sector officials were present as the reactor went critical: Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Dept of Atomic Energy & Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission; Sreekumar G Pillai, Director, IGCAR; Allu Ananth, CMD-In-Charge, BHAVINI.
What is India's three-stage nuclear programme?
India’s 3-stage nuclear programme is a sequential strategy to convert uranium into plutonium and finally utilise thorium for generating sustainable nuclear energy. In the first stage, Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) use natural Uranium to generate electricity and produce Plutonium-239 as a by-product. At present, India has about two dozen PHWR Nuclear power plants, which contribute about 3percent of India's total power generation. The second stage employs Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs), which use Plutonium(by-product from the first stage) to generate more fissile material, while converting thorium into Uranium-233.In the third stage, advanced reactors utilise Uranium-233 along with Thorium to produce sustainable nuclear energy. In simple terms, India's Fast Breeder Reactors technology forms the vital bridge between the current fleet of pressurised heavy water reactors and the future deployment of Thorium-based reactors. This long-term strategy is particularly suited to India, which possesses minimal Uranium reserves but one of the world’s largest Thorium reserves. While the first stage is fully operational, the second stage has just begun and has a long way to go, while the third stage remains in the research phase.
India's goal to expand nuclear power generation capacity
At present, India has the capacity to generate about 8,780 megawatts of Nuclear energy from over two dozen facilities across the country. India's Nuclear power generation capacity is expected to increase to 22,380 MW by 2031-32 on progressive completion of projects under implementation, as per Government data. Thus, over the next decade, nuclear power generation is expected to increase threefold.
