Australia Test captain Tim Paine believes it would be "impossible" for Afghanistan to compete in next month's T20 World Cup as other countries might refuse to play against them following Taliban's ban on women's cricket in the war-ravaged country.

Soon after forming the interim government, the Taliban banned women from playing cricket or any others sports, casting doubts over Afghanistan men's team Test status. As per ICC rules, all Test playing nations must have a women's team as well.

Paine backed the decision of Cricket Australia (CA) which all but confirmed on Thursday that the men team's season-opening Test against Afghanistan, slated to start on November 27, will be scrapped due to the Taliban's order.

"I don't think we want to be associated with countries that are taking opportunities or things off literally half their population," Paine was quoted as saying on SEN radio.

"I'd imagine it's impossible (for Afghanistan to take part) if teams are pulling out of playing against them and governments are not letting them travel to our shores.

"How a team like that can be allowed to play in an ICC-sanctioned event is going to be very, very hard to see," he added.

The ICC has flagged it won't discuss the issue until a board meeting in November, although pressure from members could potentially expedite things.

"It's sad. We've heard nothing from the ICC, which is fascinating given there is a T20 World Cup in just over a month's time," Paine said.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres pleaded for countries to continue dialogue with the Taliban. He said this during an interview with AFP on Thursday. He expressed fears that hardline Islamists' return to power in Afghanistan may embolden jihaidists in Sahel region of Africa.

"We must maintain a dialogue with the Taliban, where we affirm our principles directly -- a dialogue with a feeling of solidarity with the Afghan people," he said.

"Our duty is to extend our solidarity to a people who suffer greatly, where millions and millions risk dying of hunger," added the secretary-general.

He said that the world must avoid an "econnomic collapse" in Afghanistan.

Guterres said there were "no guarantees" about what might come out of talks but that discussions are a must "if we want Afghanistan not to be a center of terrorism, if we want women and girls to not lose all the rights acquired during the previous period, if we want different ethnic groups to be able to feel represented."

Without calling for the lifting of international sanctions or the release of Afghan funds frozen around the world, the UN head predicted that "financial instruments" would allow Afghanistan's economy "to breathe."

"Until now, in the discussions that we have had, there is at least a receptivity to talk," added Guterres, who does not rule out going to Afghanistan one day if conditions are right.

He said Afghanistan must be governed "in peace and stability, with the rights of the people respected."

Guterres added that the Taliban wants recognition, financial support and sanctions to be abolished.
"That gives a certain leverage to the international community," he said.

Asked about the risks of an Afghanistan-like scenario occurring in the Sahel, the secretary-general said he feared the "psychological and real impact" of what happened in recent weeks.

"There is a real danger. (Some) terrorist groups may feel enthusiastic about what happened and have ambitions beyond what they thought a few months ago," he warned.

"The economy must be allowed to breathe for a few more months, giving the Taliban a chance to demonstrate flexibility and a genuine will to do things differently this time, notably from a human rights, gender, and counter-terrorism perspective," Lyons said.

As predicted, humanitarian crisis is worsening in the country, leading to an impending danger for women and minority groups, in addition to other locals. However, there is another "looming crisis" that is being caused by the suspension of funds that used to come in from international groups and other countries. The freezing of billions of dollars in Afghan assets can cause "a severe economic downturn that could throw many more millions into poverty and hunger".

The ongoing crisis will set the country back for years and can also call departure of refugees.

UN envoy has urged the international groups and world leaders to provide humanitarian relief "on a "large scale" to prevent "a total breakdown of the economy and social order".

The Taliban was businesslike, "professional" and cooperative in facilitating the latest evacuation of US nationals from Afghanistan, the White House said Thursday.

"The Taliban have been cooperative in facilitating the departure of American citizens and lawful permanent residents on charter flights from HKIA," National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne said of Thursday's flight from Kabul to Qatar.

"They have shown flexibility, and they have been businesslike and professional in our dealings with them in this effort," Horne added, stressing that efforts to facilitate such evacuations of Americans and Afghans who worked with the US mission would continue.

The coronavirus upended the lives of millions of college students. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that men have been hit particularly hard — accounting for roughly three-fourths of pandemic-driven dropouts — and depicted an accelerating crisis in male enrollment.

A closer look at historical trends and the labor market reveals a more complex picture, one in which women keep playing catch-up in an economy structured to favor men.

In many ways, the college gender imbalance is not new. Women have outnumbered men on campus since the late 1970s. The ratio of female to male undergraduates increased much more from 1970 to 1980 than from 1980 to the present. And the numbers have not changed much in recent decades. In 1992, 55 per cent of college students were women. By 2019, the number had nudged up to 57.4 per cent.

While the shift in the college gender ratio is often characterised as men "falling behind," men are actually more likely to go to college today than they were when they were the majority, many decades ago. In 1970, 32 per cent of men 18-24 were enrolled in college, a level that was most likely inflated by the opportunity to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. That percentage dropped to 24 per cent in 1978 and then steadily grew to a stable 37-39 per cent over the last decade.

The gender ratio mostly changed because female enrollment increased even faster, more than doubling over the last half-century.

Because of the change in ratio, some selective colleges discriminate against women in admissions to maintain a gender balance, as the Journal reported. Generally, admissions officials prefer to limit the disparity to 55 per cent female and 45 per cent male. Their reason not to let the gender ratio drift further toward 2-1 is straightforward: Such a ratio would most likely cause a decrease in applications.

In a New York Times essay in 2006 titled "To All the Girls I've Rejected," the dean of admissions at Kenyon College at the time explained: "Beyond the availability of dance partners for the winter formal, gender balance matters in ways both large and small on a residential college campus. Once you become decidedly female in enrollment, fewer males and, as it turns out, fewer females find your campus attractive."

During the pandemic, many undergraduates struggled to make the grade. Some left school altogether. But according to the National Student Clearinghouse, the initial male-dominated pandemic enrollment shock was almost entirely confined to community colleges that are open to all. In fact, the Clearinghouse data shows that male enrollment in public and private nonprofit four-year colleges dropped more from 2018 to 2019, before the pandemic, than from 2019 to 2020.

The raw numbers do not take into account the varying value of college degrees. Men still dominate in fields like technology and engineering, which offer some of the highest salaries for recent graduates. Perhaps not coincidentally, the professors in those fields remain overwhelmingly male.

Women surged into college because they were able to, but also because many had to. There are still some good-paying jobs available to men without college credentials. There are relatively few for women. And despite the considerable cost in time and money of earning a degree, many female-dominated jobs do not pay well.

Consider a woman working as a cosmetologist who took out a student loan to earn a credential and complete the arduous process of getting an occupational license. Her husband in a male-dominated working-class field is more likely to have no degree at all. One way to see that couple is as an example of the greater likelihood of graduation among women than men. Another way is how our society requires women to spend more time and money than men to get a job. The female-to-male gender ratio is highest in for-profit colleges, which often overcharge students for worthless degrees.

The fact that the male-female wage gap remains large after more than four decades in which women outnumbered men in college strongly suggests that college alone offers a narrow view of opportunity. Women often seem stuck in place: As they overcome obstacles and use their degrees to move into male-dominated fields, the fields offer less pay in return.

None of this diminishes the significance of the male decrease in college enrollment and graduation. Educators view the male-driven dive in community college enrollment over the last 18 months as a calamity. The pandemic confirmed what was already known. The higher socioeconomic classes are deeply embedded in college and will bear considerable cost and inconvenience to stay there, even if it means watching lectures on a laptop in the room above your parent’s garage and missing a season of parties and football games.

For other people, college attendance is far more fragile. It does not define their identities and is not as important as earning a steady paycheck or starting and nurturing a family. In a time of crisis, it can be delayed — but the reality is that people who drop out of college are statistically unlikely to complete a degree.

Last year, women were less likely than men to leave community college, despite their disproportionate responsibility for caregiving and domestic work, because they no doubt understood the bleak long-term job prospects for women without a credential.

But about 200,000 fewer women were enrolled in community college last year nonetheless. If we are looking for a college enrollment crisis, that is also a good place to start.

There are alarming hints that after Pakistan's ISI has solidified its control over Afghanistan via the Taliban, it may transfer Afghans and others to India, specifically Jammu and Kashmir.

India's red lines pertain to the use of Afghan soil for anti-India terrorism, which the Taliban may cross.

The fall of Panjshir may have been the result of a terrorist barter. The deal is straightforward, Pakistan assists the Taliban in obtaining Panjshir. In addition, the Taliban will assist Pakistan in spreading terrorism and anti-India hostilities in Kashmir.

The capture of Panjshir took place this week. It was not only disappointing but also unexpected.

Panjshir is thought to be impregnable, superpowers have attempted and failed in the past.

So, how did a ragtag bunch of fanatics pull it off?

Because the Pakistan Air Force assisted Taliban militants. The opposition was being bombed by the Pakistani air force. This was confirmed by a former Iranian president.

As a result, the Pakistani military became involved in Panjshir openly. The operation was overseen by Pakistan's ISI chief, who was in Kabul. The individuals attacking Panjshir had their Pakistani identity cards recovered.

Iran has opened a probe into foreign involvement in the invasion of Panjshir. Pakistan's participation made all the difference.

This is something we can't independently verify. However, we can assure you that it is a win-win situation for all parties.

In Panjshir, Pakistan aids the Taliban in Kashmir, the Taliban aid Pakistan.

Islamabad had always intended for this to happen. In Kabul, set up a proxy government and all hard-liners and Haqqanis should be packed in.

Then let loose on Kashmir. This is a script we've seen before.

Kabul was conquered by the Taliban in 1996. In the same year, violence in Kashmir exploded. Terrorist assaults totalled 4,496. There were around 1,400 civilians dead.

This was not an accident. This was the terror machine of Pakistan and the Taliban at work. There were reports in

May of last year that the Taliban might intervene in Kashmir. These assertions were refuted by their representative.

However, Kashmir is not Panjshir, and the Indian army is not an Afghan resistance force. Nonetheless, the Pakistan-

The Taliban cannot be taken at face value in India. Hardliners and Pakistani proxies wield actual authority. They are still India's enemies.

Amid the turmoil and exodus in Afghanistan, the last known Jewish man in the country left on Friday. This marks another grim landmark for the country that once was home to sizeable Jew population.

Zebulon Simentov is in early 60s and has lived in Kabul for decades. He maintained the only Jewish synagogue in the country. Simentov lived in Afghanistan for decades and has seen political turmoil, regime changes. He was in Afghanistan during Taliban's previous rule in late 90s.

An Israeli American businessman named Moti Kahana was quoted by CNN as he said Simentov and 30 others travelled by van and went to "a neighbouring country" travelling through Afghanistan's mountainous regions. As per the news report, Kahana's organisation arranged for Simentov's escape. On their way out of the country, Simentov and those travelling with him had to negotiate several Taliban checkpoints.

There was a sizeable Jewish community in Afghanistan of about 40,000 people till the mid 19th century. Due to various reasons the numbers dwindled. Most of the Jews went to Israel after the country was formed in 1948.

Simentov reportedly had refused to leave Afghanistan in the beginning. However, his neighbouring convinced him to make an escape as they told him that he may become a target of, if not Taliban, then ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K).

The BRICS Delhi declaration on Thursday expressed "concern" over the latest developments in Afghanistan and caution that the country's territory might be used by terrorist as sanctuary.

Delhi Declaration was issued after the 13th BRICS summit, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called for "settling the situation by peaceful means" and "refraining from violence" when it comes the ongoing crisis in the country.

This summit saw participation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The joint statement stressed on the "need to contribute to fostering an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue" so as to ensure "stability, civil peace, law and order in the country." While condemning in the "strongest terms" the terrorist attacks near the Hamid Karzai Kabul International Airport, the declaration underscored the "priority of fighting terrorism, including preventing attempts by terrorist organizations to use Afghan territory as terrorist sanctuary" and to "carry out attacks against other countries, as well as drug trade within Afghanistan."

India has been concerned about Pakistan-based international terror groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) using Afghan territory. The same was conveyed by India's NSA Ajit Doval to Russia's Secretary of the Security Council General Nikolay Patrushev, earlier this week.

China has its own concerns about Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), an Uyghur Islamic extremist organisation using Afghan territory to destabilise Xinjiang further.

The Declaration also saw emphasis on the "need to address the humanitarian situation and to uphold human rights, including those of women, children and minorities."

Since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, worry is that the group will not respect the rights of women and other ethnic minorities. With the announcement of so called "acting" government by Taliban, which has no representation from women and presence of Haqqani network, the fears have only confirmed the true intent of the extremist group which has deep linkages with Pakistan.

During the talks, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Brazil President Bolsonaro backed India's line on Afghanistan, especially when it comes to the issue of terrorism.

Sanjay Bhattacharyya, India's G20 Sherpa, after the summit, said, "There is a very strong sense of consensus which is supportive of our perspective on the developments in Afghanistan and in the region."

Afghanistan's geographic proximity with three BRICS countries — India, China and Russia — makes the issue an important part of regional discussion. Next week will see the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO summit) which will be hosted by Tajikistan, and Afghanistan yet again will dominate the focus. This drastic whitewashing of the wall has come at a time when the women of the Taliban-controlled country are taking to the streets to raise their voices against the exclusion of women in the new government, among several other discriminatory issues.

Taliban have allowed women to attend schools and universities but have imposed new regulations. All women attending private colleges and schools will have to cover most of their face. Girls are also not allowed to sit in same classes as boys and if they do, they have to sit behind a curtain, segregated from men. Only female teachers can teach women and girls have to compulsorily leave the premises five minutes prior so that they do not interact with any men.

Women have been fighting for equal rights and human rights in the country since Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15.

However, it is not just the US embassy wall that has changed. Now, Afghan visa does not have the country’s map. Instead, the visa now comes with the Islamic Emirate logo.

As news agencies reported that the airport will be ready to host international flights after three days, recent images from the airport show that the outer side of the Kabul airport (the main entrance of the airport) has been changed as the ‘Hamid Karzai international airport’ has been removed now, and the text only reads 'Kabul international airport'.
