The informal notifications were for a truck-based rocket launcher made by Lockheed Martin Corp called a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), long-range air-to-ground missiles made by Boeing Co called SLAM-ER, and external sensor pods for F-16 jets that allow the real-time transmission of imagery and data from the aircraft back to ground stations.

Notifications for the sale of other weapon systems, including large, sophisticated aerial drones, land-based Harpoon anti-ship missiles and underwater mines, to deter amphibious landings, have yet to reach Capitol Hill, but these were expected soon, the sources said.

"The arrests on the mainland had nothing to do with the Hong Kong police," Ho added.

Police also seized HK$500,000 ($64,500) in cash, computers, mobile phones, and documents related to the purchase of a boat.

"As long as the Beijing authorities are willing to resolve antagonisms and improve cross-strait relations, while parity and dignity are maintained, we are willing to work together to facilitate meaningful dialogue," Tsai said.

There was no immediate reaction from China, which cut off a formal talks mechanism in 2016 after she first won office.

Tsai said she was committed to maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait, but that this was the responsibility of both sides.

Still, she has made strengthening Taiwan`s armed forces a priority, and said she would keep pushing this, upholding the principle of neither seeking war nor fearing it.

"Our commitment to our sovereignty and democratic values will not change, but we will also maintain strategic flexibility and be responsive to changes," she said, without elaborating.

The United States has been pushing Taiwan to modernise its military so they can become a "porcupine", hard for China to attack. Washington, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, though it is its strongest global backer.

The letter was issued in the wake of advertisements put out by the Taiwan government in a couple of leading newspapers in India ahead of Taiwan's national day on October 10.

China claims democratic Taiwan as its sovereign territory, and says only it has the right to speak for the island internationally, a position it has pushed strongly during the pandemic, especially at the World Health Organisation.

Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu had earlier said new passports were needed to prevent their nationals being mistaken for Chinese citizens, especially with the stepped up entry checks many countries have begun since the pandemic began.

The passport with the new cover design is scheduled to be issued on January 2021. People using existing passports can continue to use them until they expire.

Quad is an anti-China front and China clearly knows this, just as everyone else in the world. Quad should therefore be causing anxiety to leadership in China since it is for the first time that four nations have formed a front to checkmate the aggressive and expansionist ambitions of China. While only four countries are members of Quad, a number of other countries like Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea must be wishing QUAD well and watching the developments with interest. &nbsp;&nbsp;

While China has made spectacular progress in industrial and economic growth and military power, this&nbsp;'progress' has only caused alarm in many countries who are concerned about the aggressive posturing of China&nbsp;

China has already 'pocketed' Pakistan and North Korea. Moreover, China has a vice-like grip on countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar. It has managed to do so by giving loans and getting strategic positions in these countries.

China is occupying thousands of kilometres of Indian land and is claiming more. China’s aggressive claim with regard to the South China Sea and Senkaku islands clearly shows its &nbsp;expansionist intentions. &nbsp;

China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) scheme is part of its strategy to dominate the entire world. In such a situation it is important that China’s aggressive march be halted and that China renounces its expansionist approach.

It is still not clear as to what would be the strategy of the Quad. Will be restricted to defensive movements?&nbsp;

Member countries of the Quad should realize that defensive strategies would only give more time to China to fortify its expansionist plans. If Quad ends up just as a discussion forum, China will have the last laugh.

Chinese government is a totalitarian regime under the control of coterie of leaders and certainly, it is not a representative government of the people of China. &nbsp;

Therefore, any strategic action of Quad members against China should be clearly understood as directed towards Chinese government and not towards Chinese people. Quad members should make this clear to the world.

It is necessary that Quad should work out a time-bound action plan to resist China’s aggression.

The first step in this direction should be to recognise Taiwan and take measures to ensure that Taiwan becomes a full-fledged member of the UN. China has been threatening to invade Taiwan for a long time and it may do so at any time in future. These plans must be thwarted.

China has occupied Tibet for over six decades now and the world is silent. China is suppressing freedom in Hong Kong and the world is simply watching. Encouraged by such silence, China may think that occupation of Taiwan may also get silently 'approved' by the world. China may also think that it can brush aside sounds of protest from 'paper tiger'. It is therefore necessary for the Quad to not let itself become one.

History provides many examples that drive home the saying that offence is the best defence. This is true more so when the cause is just.

Taiwan was part of China. When communist leaders launched an aggressive war against the then leadership of China, Taiwan became a separate region. Communist leaders then occupied the mainland. Hence, Taiwan deserves world recognition.

Second strategy of the Quad should be to work towards liberation of Tibet and undo the historical harm done by ruthless and totalitarian Chinese government. World and the UN have a duty to ensure that Tibet gets it’s independence back.

These two steps would make China realize the limitations of its aggression and expansionist strategies and would make China behave better, which is an essential need for world peace.

In such a situation it is important that China’s aggressive march be halted and that China renounces its expansionist approach. It is still not clear as to what would be the strategy of the Quad. Will be restricted to defensive movements? Member countries of the Quad should realize that defensive strategies would only give more time to China to fortify its expansionist plans. If Quad ends up just as a discussion forum, China will have the last laugh. Chinese government is a totalitarian regime under the control of coterie of leaders and certainly, it is not a representative government of the people of China. Therefore, any strategic action of Quad members against China should be clearly understood as directed towards Chinese government and not towards Chinese people. Quad members should make this clear to the world. It is necessary that Quad should work out a time-bound action plan to resist China’s aggression. The first step in this direction should be to recognise Taiwan and take measures to ensure that Taiwan becomes a full-fledged member of the UN. China has been threatening to invade Taiwan for a long time and it may do so at any time in future. These plans must be thwarted. China has occupied Tibet for over six decades now and the world is silent. China is suppressing freedom in Hong Kong and the world is simply watching. Encouraged by such silence, China may think that occupation of Taiwan may also get silently 'approved' by the world. China may also think that it can brush aside sounds of protest from 'paper tiger'. It is therefore necessary for the Quad to not let itself become one. History provides many examples that drive home the saying that offence is the best defence. This is true more so when the cause is just. Taiwan was part of China. When communist leaders launched an aggressive war against the then leadership of China, Taiwan became a separate region. Communist leaders then occupied the mainland. Hence, Taiwan deserves world recognition. Second strategy of the Quad should be to work towards liberation of Tibet and undo the historical harm done by ruthless and totalitarian Chinese government. World and the UN have a duty to ensure that Tibet gets it’s independence back. These two steps would make China realize the limitations of its aggression and expansionist strategies and would make China behave better, which is an essential need for world peace. In a report to parliament, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, Taiwan's Defence Ministry said so far this year the air force had scrambled 4,132 times, up 129 per cent&nbsp;compared to all of last year, according to Reuters calculations.

China "is trying to use unilateral military actions to change the security status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and at the same time is testing our response, increasing pressure on our air defences and shrinking our space for activity," it said.

The rapid development of China's military has been accompanied by "targeted" military actions against Taiwan, the ministry added.

China has been particularly angered by growing U.S. support for Taiwan, including senior US&nbsp;officials visiting the island, adding to broader Sino-U.S. tensions.

While Taiwan is unable to compete numerically with China's armed forces, President Tsai Ing-wen has been overseeing a military modernisation programme, aiming to make the island's armed forces more nimble and Taiwan more difficult to attack.

Addressing a Taiwan-US&nbsp;defence conference late Monday, Vice Defence Minister Chang Guan-chung said China has been ramping up what he called "realistic training against Taiwan".

"We are developing systems that are small, numerous, smart, stealthy, fast, mobile, low-cost, survivable, effective, easy to develop, maintain and preserve, and difficult to detect and counter," he said.

Chang called for enhanced cooperation with the United States that goes beyond weapons sales, saying that would further invigorate Taiwan's defence reform and military modernisation.

"We will also emphasise joint effort in training, operational concepts, capability assessment, intelligence sharing, and armament cooperation. These are equally important as the acquisition of hardware," he said.

Late on Saturday, the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung’s government said the website of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy had begun listing Taiwan member cities like itself as part of China.

“Taiwan is Taiwan. China is China. Taiwan is not a city of China’s. If there is incorrect usage we think this is extremely improper,” Premier Su Tseng-chang told reporters.

The Kaohsiung city government circulated to reporters a draft of a joint letter from six Taiwanese mayors to the Global Covenant asking it to fix the name issue, or they would withdraw from the group.

In an emailed statement, the Global Covenant’s secretariat said it was an apolitical organisation promoting climate action.

“Since our inception, we have designated cities in accordance with international practices and this has not changed since. We have received and are evaluating the request from the six mayors,” it said, without elaborating.

The Global Covenant says its mission is to “galvanise climate and energy action across cities worldwide”, representing a population of over 800 million. The only Chinese city it lists as a member is Hong Kong.

A detailed list of benefits was advertised by China. For the children, China promised education, assurance of employment, and even a membership of the Communist Party. Chinese state media was used to push stories and promote these marriages.

Setting-up a system of mass surveillance

Chen Chwan-Gwoh was the man who designed the surveillance system in Tibet as the party chief. He was described as Beijing's man for restive regions.

And now Chwan-Gwoh is the Communist Party secretary of Xinjiang.&nbsp; He is also a member of the powerful politburo of the Communist Party, and the man who orchestrated the genocide of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang.

The base, now home to F-CK-1 Ching-kuo Indigenous Defence Fighters (IDF) which first entered service in 1997, is at the front line of Taiwan's response to Chinese military intrusions.

Wang Chia-chu, one of the senior officers of the "Heavenly Colt" IDF squadron, said there is just five minutes' time to scramble fighters once Chinese aircraft are spotted.

"We will defend our airspace in real time as long as there's a threat," Wang said.

Another senior officer, speaking&nbsp;on condition of anonymity, said the Penghu-based IDFs are now scrambling&nbsp;"almost every day" as tension run high.

The air force also put on display its new Wan Chien air-to-ground cruise missiles that entered service in 2018 and can be fired from IDFs at targets about 200 km (125 miles) away, putting&nbsp;Chinese facilities or approaching&nbsp;ships in their sights.

Separately, Defence Minister Yen Teh-fa oversaw drills simulating&nbsp;a response to an air attack, involving&nbsp;all Taiwan's air bases as well as naval and surface-to-air missile units, the ministry said.

"The enemy threat grows by the day," it cited Yen as saying. "On no account allow the enemy to step out of line, and defend the country's sovereignty, democracy and freedom."

Crossing the mid line

Unusually, Chinese aircraft last week breached the mid line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial barrier for combat aircraft of both sides, though they have not flown over mainland Taiwan.

On Monday, China's foreign ministry said the line did not exist, drawing&nbsp;condemnation from Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

In Taipei on Tuesday, Wu called the line an important "symbol" for avoiding&nbsp;military clashes.

"We demand the international community strongly condemns China's words and actions and demand the Chinese government stops everything&nbsp;that it has been doing," he added.

China has been angered by stepped-up US&nbsp;support for democratic Taiwan, including&nbsp;a visit to Taipei last week by US&nbsp;Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Keith Krach.

Wang added that any support for Taiwan's independence is a "dead end... doomed to fail".

Look at the numbers of tanks, China: 3,500 and 11,761 is the number if you combine the Indian, Taiwanese and American tanks. So what exactly is China thinking — in opening up multiple fronts? Why would it engage 3 countries at the same time?

Especially when it includes the world’s most-powerful and 4th-most powerful armies.
