Switzerland has unilaterally decided to suspend the most favoured nation (MFN) clause in its Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with India. The move comes after the Supreme Court of India's ruling in the Nestle case. The move is expected to have a significant impact on the operations of Indian companies in Switzerland as well as Swiss investments in India.

<h2>Supreme Court’s ruling</h2>

In a statement released on December 11, the Swiss finance department cited the 2023 ruling of the Supreme Court as the reason to remove India’s MFN status.

In its ruling, the top court held that the MFN status between the two nations doesn’t apply automatically when a nation joins the Organisation for Economic Co-operation or OECD, especially when India already has a taxation treaty in place with that country.

<h2>History of the case</h2>

The case stems from Lithuania and Colombia joining the OECD grouping, nations with which India had signed tax agreements. Under the OECD, partner nations offer each other 'more favourable' tax treatment under the MFN clause.

Switzerland on the other hand made this assumption that 5 per cent rate for dividends would apply to the India-Switzerland tax treaty under the MFN clause, instead of the 10 per cent rate mentioned in the bilateral treaty. India’s Supreme Court in its ruling said that prior tax treaty should take precedence and not the MFN clause.

In October 2023, while ruling in a case brought against Nestle, the apex court noted that the MFN clause "was not directly applicable in the absence of 'notification' in accordance with Section 90 of the Income Tax Act".

Now, in line with the Supreme Court’s order, Switzerland will start levying a 10 per cent tax (instead of the current 5 per cent) on dividends payable to Indian tax residents and entities who claim refunds for Swiss withholding tax and for Swiss tax residents who claim foreign tax credits.

In a ghastly incident, a former Miss Switzerland finalist was brutally killed by her husband and pureed in a blender. Thirty-eight-year-old Kristina Joksimovic was allegedly strangled and dismembered with a jigsaw and garden shears.&nbsp;

Her body was found in February in Binningen, near Basel in Switzerland. As investigations began into the murder, the officials concluded that Kristina had been strangled before she died.&nbsp;

According to local media reports, the husband, known as pseudonym Thomas, has admitted to murdering his wife. His appeal for release from custody was rejected on Wednesday by the Federal Court in Lausanne.

The probe into the killing has found "concrete indications of mental illness".&nbsp;

Thomas claims that he killed his wife in an act of self-defence as she attacked him with a knife. After murdering her, he reportedly said that he started to panic and so dismembered his wife. However, according to Swiss outlet FM1 Today, a medical-forensic report "contradicts his description of self-defence".&nbsp;

An autopsy found the brutal manner in which the model's body was dismembered. The husband took the body into the laundry room where he used a jigsaw, knife and garden shears to carry out the terrible act.

According to reports by the local outlet Blick, he then chopped her up with a hand blender, and "pureed" and dissolved the body parts in a chemical solution.

In a rare medical feat, a doctor carried out an endoscopy on a pig in Hong Kong while sitting in a lab which was 9,300 kilometres away in Zurich, Switzerland.

The operation was part of the collaborative project between researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and ETH Zurich.&nbsp;

In the project, the researchers were able to look into the stomach of the anaesthetized animal while sitting in the other half of the world with the help of a smooth internet connection and clever robotic technology.&nbsp;

Doctoral student Alexandre Mesot used the joysticks of a PlayStation controller to manipulate the endoscope in Hong Kong and checked the images on a screen in the lab in Zurich. There was only a 300-millisecond delay in loading of the images.

This surgery has emerged as a breakthrough in the field of telesurgery.&nbsp;

Before the endoscopy, the surgeons had anaesthetized the pig in the operating room in Hong Kong and had also safely inserted the endoscope in its stomach through the mouth.

<h2>Here's how the doctor carried out nearly impossible endoscopy on pig</h2>

The endoscope used not any usual one but was specially developed by the ETH Zurich team for navigating with the help of a magnetic field.

“Not only can the endoscope be bent in any direction thanks to its magnetic head; it’s also smaller and easier to manoeuvre than conventional devices,” said Mesot, in his statement.

Mesot said that it was so flexible that he was able to control the endoscope from Switzerland and easily manipulate it bend its head backwards by 180° and check the stomach entrance.&nbsp;

Mesot was also able to take tissue samples from the stomach wall using a tiny gripper. Since this endoscope is smaller than usual, it can be used on human patients by inserting it through their nose and not the mouth.

“In the next step of our research, we hope to carry out a teleoperated endoscopy on a human stomach,” said Professor Bradley Nelson, who is from the Multi-Scale Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich while speaking to IFL Science.

“There’s a lot of potential in this technology. Here I’m thinking of minimally invasive procedures in the gastrointestinal tract, such as cancer screening," he added.

As per the reports, the pig survived the endoscopy and did not suffer because of the operation's novel nature.

What looks like an avalanche of clouds was seen descending on Swiss Alps in Obergoms on Monday during a meteorological event known as Alpine foehn. Timelapse video shows the "river of clouds" as it makes its way down the Grimsel Pass.

Thick, voluminous clouds descend on Swiss Alps

According to reports, beneath Switzerland’s lakes lie military munitions, long buried and potentially hazardous. The Swiss government has now recognized this potential danger and launched a national competition with a prize of around $58,000, for anyone who can devise a method to remove these munitions safely, and in an environmentally friendly manner.

Switzerland offering $58,000 to fish out ammunition from Lakes

In an attempt to fish out thousands of tonnes of munitions submerged in the depths of water bodies in Switzerland, the authorities have launched a competition to gather ideas.

The three best ideas will share a massive prize pot of&nbsp;50,000 Swiss francs ($57,800), according to a statement published by the Federal Office for Defence Procurement (Armasuisse).&nbsp;The government is looking for ideas that are safe and environmentally friendly.

“With the launching of an idea competition, armasuisse wants to increasingly involve academia and industry in the considerations on how environmentally friendly and safe recovery of deep lake ammunition could be carried out, should this ever become an issue,” read the statement.&nbsp;

“This could be the case if, against all expectations, the release of pollutants from submerged ammunition were to be established during ongoing lake water monitoring," it added.

The competition is open to the public and the last date to submit entries is February 2025. A panel of experts will assess the entries and announce the results in April 2025.&nbsp;

<h2>Challenges to retrieving munitions&nbsp;</h2>

According to reports, there is an estimated 3,300 tonnes of submerged ammunition in Lake Lucerne and 4,500 tonnes in Lake Neuchatel alone. They were dunked in the lakes between 1918 and 1964.&nbsp;

Some munitions are at a depth of 150 to 220 metres while others, especially in Lake Neuchatel are just six or seven metres below the surface.&nbsp;

According to reports, the submerged munition is covered by&nbsp;a fine sediment layer and recovery attempts may damage the sensitive lake ecosystem and kill the tourism around it.&nbsp;

Experts argue that even if the ideas are suggested quickly, it could take years and billions in funding to get the operation underway. However, the Swiss government is of the view that the ideas could form the basis of future research into dealing with the issue of submerged munitions.&nbsp;

Notably, the threat of munitions lying unattended in public spaces is not a new phenomenon in Switzerland, In 1947, the alpine village of Mitholz suffered a massive blast when 3,000 tonnes of ammunition, stored in the mountain by the military, overlooking the village exploded.&nbsp;

As many as nine people were killed in the blast and the entire village was destroyed. Such was the magnitude of the blast that it was heard 160 kilometres away in Zurich.&nbsp;

After introducing a breakthrough method for assisted dying, Sarco is now set to use its suicide pods for first time ever. The first use of a portable suicide pod will be carried out in Switzerland this year, potentially within months to come, the company said on Wednesday.

The space-age-looking Sarco capsule was first unveiled in 2019, which uses the method of replacing the oxygen inside it with nitrogen, causing death by hypoxia. It would cost $20 to use.

The Last Resort organisation now said it saw no legal obstacle to its use in Switzerland, where the law generally allows assisted suicide if the person commits the lethal act himself.

Switzerland set to use controversial portable suicide pods 'within months'

The prosecutors in Switzerland took a landmark decision of banning a 'death capsule' which has been designed for carrying out assisted suicides before it was about to be used for the first time.&nbsp;

The machine called Sarco - a short form of the sarcophagus - allows euthanasia patients sitting inside it to press a button and die 'within seconds', as per the company Exit Switzerland, which created it.

The machine has been dubbed the 'Tesla of euthanasia' and it gets filled with nitrogen which leaves the occupant gasping for oxygen and makes him/her unconscious before death.

Dr Philip Nitschke, a vocal&nbsp;advocate for&nbsp;assisted dying, created the machine&nbsp;and claims that it will help its users to die swiftly and painlessly.

<h2>What prosecutors said about the 'death pod'</h2>

The prosecutors in Switzerland's Schaffhausen Canton said anyone caught assisting someone in using the pods can face nearly five years of imprisonment, as reported by Swiss media.

Public Prosecutor Peter Sticher hinted at "serious consequences" for Nitschke for "inducement and aiding and abetting suicide for selfish reasons".

As quoted by Swiss media, Sticher said, "There is no reliable information about the method of killing. [It is] completely unclear who has control over which mechanical process during the dying process."

The ban was imposed after Dr Nitschke said on June 10 that Sarco was about to be deployed in Switzerland "in the next few weeks."

"The machine can be towed anywhere for the death. It can be in an idyllic outdoor setting or on the premises of an assisted suicide organisation, for example," the&nbsp;advocate for assisted dying&nbsp;added.

He said, "The person will climb into the machine, they will be asked three questions and they will answer verbally - 'Who are you?', 'Where are you?' and 'Do you know what happens if you press the button?'"

"And if they answer those questions verbally, the software then switches the power on so that the button can then be pressed. And if they press the button they will die very quickly," Dr Nitschke explained.

"When you climb into Sarco the oxygen level is 21 per cent but after you press the button it takes 30 seconds for the oxygen to drop to less than 1 per cent," he added.

The prosecutors in Switzerland took a landmark decision of banning a 'death capsule' which has been designed for carrying out assisted suicides before it was about to be used for the first time. The machine called Sarco - a short form of the sarcophagus - allows euthanasia patients sitting inside it to press a button and die 'within seconds', as per the company Exit Switzerland, which created it. The machine has been dubbed the 'Tesla of euthanasia' and it gets filled with nitrogen which leaves the occupant gasping for oxygen and makes him/her unconscious before death. Also Read: Heartbreaking reason a 29-year-old Dutch woman chose assisted suicide Dr Philip Nitschke, a vocal advocate for assisted dying, created the machine and claims that it will help its users to die swiftly and painlessly. What prosecutors said about the 'death pod' The prosecutors in Switzerland's Schaffhausen Canton said anyone caught assisting someone in using the pods can face nearly five years of imprisonment, as reported by Swiss media. Public Prosecutor Peter Sticher hinted at "serious consequences" for Nitschke for "inducement and aiding and abetting suicide for selfish reasons". As quoted by Swiss media, Sticher said, "There is no reliable information about the method of killing. [It is] completely unclear who has control over which mechanical process during the dying process." The ban was imposed after Dr Nitschke said on June 10 that Sarco was about to be deployed in Switzerland "in the next few weeks." "The machine can be towed anywhere for the death. Mysterious ancient artefacts, which may have traces of the Black Plague, have been appearing in the melting ice glaciers of the Swiss Alps and puzzling the archaeologists.&nbsp;

People, who belonged to the Iron Age,&nbsp;Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages, have travelled across the icy mountain passes of the Alps along with cows, mules, oil, wine, skis, weapons, and more.

Their belongings which they may have lost or abandoned are now surfacing as the glaciers melt in the mountains and leaving clues regarding their past civilizations&nbsp;and eras.
