<p>Around 2028, a Sample Retrieval Lander is expected to be launched from Earth, carrying a NASA-led Mars rocket and small Mars helicopters. The lander will land near a crater nearby the rover and the rocks collected by Perseverance would be loaded upon the rocket.</p>

<p>Notably, the lander needs to be close to the Perseverance rover to facilitate the transfer of Mars samples. It must land within 66 yards (60 metres) of its target site.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Two Ingenuity-like helicopters would provide a secondary capability to retrieve samples on the surface of Mars. Once the sample cache is launched off the Red Planet, another spacecraft would capture it in Mars orbit, and then bring it to Earth safely and securely in the early to mid-2030s," NASA informed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An international team of nearly 100 scientists was left perplexed after discovering the highest-energy light rays ever observed from the sun which has since created a new puzzle for the solar physicists to solve. The finding was published in Physical Review Letters after a six-year observation by more than 30 institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>The discovery</h2>

<p>The most powerful blast of energy from the sun discovered was the first ever detection of solar gamma radiation in the teraelectronvolt (TeV) range.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists, since the 1990s have observed that the sun emits many different kinds of high-energy radiation including gamma rays. However, the study published on Thursday showed there is much more type of light, known as gamma rays emitted by the sun at much higher energy levels than previously anticipated.</p>

<p>“The sun is more surprising than we knew,” said Mehr Un Nisa, a postdoctoral research associate and study co-author at Michigan State University. “We thought we had this star figured out, but that’s not the case.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, there were no correlations between this powerful blast of energy and heightened solar activity, in fact, the sun, as per the findings was pretty calm at the time of the detection but our current models of the sun can’t account for it. Additionally, this type of radiation doesn’t even reach the Earth’s surface but does create “telltale signatures”.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the HAWC</strong></h2>

<p>The groundbreaking observation was made with the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) which is located on the flanks of the Sierra Negra volcano near Puebla, Mexico at an altitude of about 13,500 feet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>What makes the site of the discovery important is that, unlike other observatories, it works around the clock. “We now have observational techniques that weren't possible a few years ago,” said Nisa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She added that in this “particular energy regime” other ground-based telescopes couldn’t look at the sun because they only work at night, but this one operates 24/7.&nbsp;</p>

<p>HAWC uses a network of 300 large water tanks, each filled with about 200 metric tonnes of water which is nestled between two dormant volcano peaks in Mexico over 13,000 feet above sea level.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, from this “vantage point,” the researchers can observe the aftermath of gamma rays that collide with Earth’s atmosphere and by doing so produce high-energy particles called air showers that are imperceptible to the naked eye.</p>

<p>In these interactions, the gamma-ray energy is redistributed into particle fragments and light which are observed by the HAWC.</p>

<h2><strong>What was found?</strong></h2>

<p>The recent analysis is based on the data collected between 2014 and 2021 and observed emissions ranging between 0.5 and 2.6 TeV from the sun. Notably, among the energy in different wavelengths emitted by the sun, visible light carries energy of about 1 electron volt, compared to the 1 trillion electron volts, or 1 tera electron volt (1 TeV), that was observed by Nisa and her team.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“After looking at six years’ worth of data, out popped this excess of gamma rays,” said the study co-author. “When we first saw it, we were like, ‘We definitely messed this up. The sun cannot be this bright at these energies’,” she added. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers noted that not only was the energy level surprising but so was the fact that they were seeing so much of it. Therefore, for the first time, the team has shown that the energies of the sun's rays extend into the TeV range, up to nearly 10 TeV, which does appear to be the maximum.&nbsp;<br />

<p>Throughout a solar cycle, the sun would transition from a calm to an intense and active period. The report said that during the peak period, the sun’s magnetic poles flip.</p>

<h2><strong>Current solar cycle full of activity</strong></h2>

<p>The report added that Solar Cycle 25 - which is the current solar cycle - has been full of activity, more so than expected. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado tracked more sunspots than those counted at the peak of<strong>&nbsp;</strong>the previous cycle.</p>

<p>Speaking to CNN, scientist Mark Miesch said that no two solar cycles are the same. “This solar maximum is the space weather equivalent of hurricane season. It’s when we see the biggest storms. But unlike hurricane season, which lasts a few months, solar maximum lasts a few years,” Miesch added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report highlighted that as solar maximum nears, sunspot clumps would form with increasingly greater frequency leading to a boost of activity. “As we become more dependent on technology, on electrical power grids, on satellites, on aircraft and on GPS, the impacts of space weather increase because these are the kinds of systems that are affected by solar storms,” Miesch also said.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The predictions</strong></h2>

<p>The new predictions for solar maximum were led by Scott McIntosh, deputy director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Robert Leamon, an associate research scientist at the Goddard Planetary Heliophysics Institute, along with their collaborators.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The CNN report said that rather than tracking sunspots, the researchers focused on what they called the terminator- it is&nbsp;a point when activity from one solar cycle disappears from the sun's surface,&nbsp;followed by a sharp increase in solar activity in the new cycle.</p>

<p>Sunspots are regarded as a keystone of solar cycle prediction, but Robert Leamon believes that tracking the magnetic activity that leads to the sunspots could yield more accurate predictions.</p>

<p>And once the solar maximum is reached, the activity can persist for years. Leamon said that&nbsp;the number of solar flares peaks after the maximum.&nbsp;“The peak of consequence is after maximum by a couple of years, so the biggest effects here on Earth will happen after maximum,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

“The photosphere is covered by convection cells, like in a boiling pot of water, and the larger scale convection flow is called supergranulation,” stated lead study author Stuart D Bale, in a statement.<br />

“Where these supergranulation cells meet and go downward, they drag the magnetic field in their path into this downward kind of funnel. The magnetic field becomes very intensified there because it’s just jammed. It’s kind of a scoop of the magnetic field going down into a drain. And the spatial separation of those little drains, those funnels, is what we’re seeing now with solar probe data,” he added.</p>

Coronal holes work like showerheads, reveal data The data collected by the spacecraft revealed that the coronal holes work like showerheads, where jets appear on the surface of the sun in the form of bright spots, marking the points where the magnetic field passes in and out of the photosphere. “The photosphere is covered by convection cells, like in a boiling pot of water, and the larger scale convection flow is called supergranulation,” stated lead study author Stuart D Bale, in a statement. “Where these supergranulation cells meet and go downward, they drag the magnetic field in their path into this downward kind of funnel. The magnetic field becomes very intensified there because it’s just jammed. It’s kind of a scoop of the magnetic field going down into a drain. And the spatial separation of those little drains, those funnels, is what we’re seeing now with solar probe data,” he added. <p>This debate over the colour of the star of our solar system raised a very curious question – what indeed is the colour of the sun: yellow or white?</p>

<p>As per the scientists, the star has a bit of both, but neither of them is its colour. Sun is actually green.</p>

<p>Project scientist of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory W Dean Pesnell said, “The sun would appear green if your eye could handle looking at it.”</p>

<p>“Basically, when you look at the sun, it has enough of all the different colours in it and it’s so bright that everybody’s eyes are firing like crazy and saying, ‘It’s too bright for me to tell you what colour it is.’ That’s why the sun looks white to us,” he added.</p>

<p>Pesnell explained that the star, which is 93 million miles away from Earth, usually appears like a white spot in the sky. However, many believe that it is yellow because of the way the light is scattered, he added.</p>

<p>Pesnell said that the molecules present in the air redirect the blue and violet wavelengths of the sunlight which allows more red and yellow wavelengths to hit one's eyes.</p>

<p>“Essentially, it’s a green star that looks white because it’s too bright, and it can also appear yellow, orange or red because of how our atmosphere works,” Pesnell said.</p>

<p>“What we perceive as the sun’s hue is really light bouncing off surfaces. When it comes to stars, colour equals temperature,” said Pesnell. He added that the star is hot, it gives off blue light and the cooler ones appear red.</p>

<p>With a temperature that hit 27 million degrees Fahrenheit in the sun's core, the star is “somewhere in the middle, in this weird space where we can’t perceive its colour,” Pesnell added, further stating that the glowing mass of gases is likely to change hues after millions of years.</p>

<p>“The sun is at its midlife, and it still has quite a lot of years before it changes colours. It still hasn’t dimmed out one bit,” Pesnell stated.</p>

Scientists say that they have observed a dying star swallowing a planet for the first time, offering a preview of Earth's expected fate in around five billion years. Astronomers had previously seen the before-and-after effects of this process, but had never before caught a planet in the act of being consumed.

<p>Scientists for the first time, witnessed a star gulping down a whole planet, giving them a glimpse of how the Earth may reach its end after billions of years when the sun runs out of fuel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Astronomers reported that they observed what appeared to them a gas giant, which was bigger than Jupiter, getting eaten by its own star. The star, similar to the sun, was seen puffing up with old age for eons and eventually, its size swelled so big that it ended up engulfing the close-orbiting planet.</p>

<p>The act of a star gobbling up its own planet appeared to be a gloomy preview of how the Earth would end when the sun turns into a red giant and eats up the initial four inner planets.</p>

<p>"If it's any consolation, this will happen in about 5 billion years," said Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics' co-author Morgan MacLeod.</p>

<p>The galactic feast took place between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago close to the Aquila constellation after the star completed its 10 billion years. After the planet went down the stellar hatch, a swift hot outburst of light took place and a long-lasting stream of dust was seen which shined brightly in cold infrared energy, the researchers stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers have earlier seen signs of stars nibbling at planets and decoded the aftermath of gobbling, however, it was the first time they saw the act of swallowing, as per the study which appeared in the journal Nature.</p>

<p>The luminous outburst was spotted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Kishalay De while reviewing sky scans which were captured by the California Institute of Technology's Palomar Observatory. Data crunching and additional observations were needed to unravel the mystery which revealed that the star, instead of eating up its companion star, gobbled up its planet.</p>

<p>The discoveries made are "very plausible," stated Carole Haswell, an astrophysicist at Britain's Open University. Haswell had headed a team in 2010 which used the Hubble Space Telescope to spot the star WASP-12 which was eating its planet.</p>

<p>"This is a different sort of eating. This star gobbled a whole planet in one gulp. In contrast, WASP-12 b and the other hot Jupiters we have previously studied are being delicately licked and nibbled," Haswell said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now that the researchers have figured out what they need to look out for, they will try finding more cosmic gulps. The researchers feel that thousands of planets may suffer a similar fate, and something similar may occur in our solar system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"All that we see around us, all the stuff that we've built around us, this will all be gone in a flash," said De.&nbsp;<br />

<p>According to a report published by news.com.au, solar winds of 2.9 million kmph are being unleashed by the gaping hole towards Earth, which may hit our planet on Friday (March 31).</p>

<p>Scientists are monitoring the situation to asses how these solar winds will impact our planet, the report said. Charged particles, which continuously flow from the Sun, impact the satellites, GPS, magnetic field and mobile phones on the Earth.</p>

<p>NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) discovered the coronal hole on March 23 near the Sun's South Pole. "The current coronal hole, the big one right now, is about 300,000 to 400,000 kilometres across. That is about 20-30 Earths lined up back-to-back," said Alex Young, who works at NASA Goddard's Heliophysics Science Division, while speaking to Business Insider.</p>

<h2><strong>Solar storm may hit Earth</strong></h2>

<p>University College London's Associate Professor of Space and Climate Physics Daniel Verscharen said that Earth may be hit by a geomagnetic storm which is coming towards the planet at a speed of about 1.8 million miles per hour.</p>

<p>“The shape of this coronal hole is not particularly special. However, its location makes it very interesting. I would expect some fast wind from that coronal hole to come to Earth around Friday night into Saturday morning of this week," he stated.</p>

<p>“This one being at the equator means we’re pretty much guaranteed to see some fast wind at Earth a couple of days after it rotates past the central meridian. I doubt it will result in too much excitement. Unless we just so happen to get an Earth-directed CME around the same time,” he said.</p>

<p>Given all this, it's natural for us to consider the Sun to be the starting point of everything as far as we are concerned. It is therefore intriguing to consider opinion of some scientists that some of the water on Earth may be older than the Sun.</p>

<p>The research team is from European South Observatory (ESO). The team made use of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to observe a planet forming disc around the star named V883 Orionis.</p>

<p>A star begins to form when large amount of dust and gas suddenly begins to collapse and forms a protostar. As the star formation progresses, the material around the protostar begins to revolve around it and over the course of millions of years, may form planets, asteroids and even comets which become part of the star system.</p>

<p>There are large amount of water molecules in this material in the planet-forming disc around the star.</p>

<p>The research team measured the chemical signature of the water content in this disc. This chemical signature gives us the idea where and when the water was formed.</p>

<p>For example, a chemical signature of the water found in a comet is similar to that on Earth, it may be said that comets could have delivered water to our planet.</p>

<p>“V883 Orionis is the missing link in this case. The composition of the water in the disc is very similar to that of comets in our own Solar System. This is confirmation of the idea that the water in planetary systems formed billions of years ago, before the Sun, in interstellar space, and has been inherited by both comets and Earth, relatively unchanged,” said John J. Tobin, an astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, USA and lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.</p>

<p>For the first time in history of India, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch a scientific mission to study the sun in June or July.&nbsp;The ISRO&nbsp;recently received the Visible Line Emission Coronagraph (VELC), which is the primary payload on board Aditya-L1, from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA). VELC is the first scientific mission of India for studying the sun and will be launched by June or July.<br />

The ceremony to hand over VELC took place at the IIA's Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST) campus in the presence of the ISRO Chairman S Somanath.</p>

<p>IIA stated that the calibration, assembling and testing of the VELC has been successfully finished by them, which is the most challenging and largest among the seven payloads/telescopes which will fly on Aditya-L1, at its CREST campus.</p>

<p>More testing of VELC and its integration with the Aditya-L1 spacecraft will now be conducted by ISRO, the release stated.</p>

<p>Somanath congratulated the team of VELC and stated that Aditya-L1's launch will take place around June or July.</p>

<p>"Understanding the effect of the sun on Earth and its surroundings has become very important now and Aditya-L1 aims to shed light on this topic. It has taken 15 years for VELC from concept to completion, and this period was needed for a complex system like this. The VELC has been the finest collaboration between IIA and ISRO,” he stated.</p>

<p>Aditya L1 is India's first space-based mission aimed at studying the sun from a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth system's Lagrangian point 1 (L 1).</p>

ISRO to launch Aditya-L1, India’s first mission to study the sun, by June-July: Chairman

<p>Our Sun may appear bountiful as it supports all life on Earth. But even it has a limited life-span. About five billion years from now, the fuel within the Sun will be spent and the Sun will start expanding. And it will certainly spell doom for planets like Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.&nbsp;However, there are many theories about the grim fate of our Solar System and exactly how the Earth will meet its end (or will it?) is still being discussed in the scientific community.</p>

<p>A new observation of a planet spiralling into a dying star may help us understand and predict what can be the Earth's fate when the only star that sustains it begins to die.</p>

<p>In a new study published on Monday (December 19), a team of mostly US-based researchers said they hope the doomed exoplanet Kepler-1658b can help shed light on how worlds die as their stars get older.</p>

<p>Kepler-1658b, which is 2,600 light years from Earth, is known as a "hot Jupiter" planet.</p>

<p>The planet is similar in size to Jupiter. However, it revolves around its dying star in an orbit one-eighth the distance between Mercury and the Sun. This makes it far hotter than Jupiter in our Solar System.</p>

<p>Kepler-1658b's orbit around its host star takes less than three days -- and it is getting shorter by around 131 milliseconds a year, according to the study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.</p>

<p>"If it continues spiralling towards its star at the observed rate, the planet will collide with its star in less than three million years," said Shreyas Vissapragada, a postdoc at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the study's lead author.</p>

<p>"This is the first time we've observed direct evidence for a planet spiralling towards its evolved star," he told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So could Earth be heading towards a similar doom?</p>

<p>"Death-by-star is a fate thought to await many worlds and could be the Earth's ultimate adios billions of years from now as our Sun grows older," the Center for Astrophysics said in a statement.<br />

Vissapragada said that "in five billion years or so, the Sun will evolve into a red giant star".&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the tidally-driven processes seen on Kepler-1658b "will drive the decay of the Earth's orbit towards the Sun," that effect could be counter-balanced by the Sun losing mass, he said.</p>

<p>"The ultimate fate of the Earth is somewhat unclear," he added.</p>

<p>Kepler-1658b was the first exoplanet ever observed by the Kepler space telescope, which launched in 2009. However it took nearly a decade of work before the planet's existence was confirmed in 2019, the Center for Astrophysics said.</p>

<p>Over 13 years, astronomers were able to observe the slow but steady change in the planet's orbit as it crossed the face of its host star.</p>

A planet spiralling into dying star may tell us about how Earth will be destroyed

<p>Gaia, a satellite operated by the European Space Agency, was used to discover the black hole first, according to Kareem El-Badry of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.</p>

<p>The International Gemini Observatory in Hawaii was contacted by El-Badry and his group to corroborate their findings, which were then reported in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.</p>

<p>How the system developed in the Milky Way is a mystery to the experts. It has the designation Gaia BH1 and is found in the serpent-bearer constellation Ophiuchus.</p>

<p>A stunning image showing exquisite details of the Sun's surface has been released by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which is taken&nbsp;by the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) in Hawaii. The image shows the Sun's chromosphere, which is the layer of its atmosphere just above its surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NSF said that the first images of the chromosphere were taken with the world's most powerful solar telescope, which is located on land of spiritual and cultural significance to the Native Hawaiian people, on June 3, 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It further noted that the image showed a region 82,500 kilometres across at a resolution of 18km. This image is taken at 486.13 nanometers using the hydrogen-beta line from the Balmer series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NSF said that the telescope is close to the completion of the first year of its Operations Commissioning Phase (OCP), and it is delivering on its promise to reveal the Sun in ways the world has never seen before.&nbsp;</p>
