Shiite worshippers were gathered for Friday prayers at the Imam Zaman mosque in Pol-i-Khomri, the capital of Baghlan province, at the time of the blast.&nbsp;

So far, there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency AFP, Mustafa Asadullah Hashimi, who is the provincial information and media chief, said: "Security and investigative forces went to the area of the incident to investigate how this heartbreaking incident happened."&nbsp;

In a statement, he confirmed the casualties, and further added that "investigations are still ongoing".&nbsp;

AFP reported that a source at Baghlan Provincial Hospital, who urged to remain anonymous, provided a tally, which was higher than what the official said.&nbsp;

The hospital source said that 19 bodies and 40 wounded patients had been brought to the facility so far. The source said, "Some of the dead and wounded were taken to other private hospitals as well."&nbsp;

As quoted by the agency, a local resident Abdul Hamid said he heard a "terrible sound" as the bomb detonated. He added, "After the explosion, a large number of martyrs and injured people were transferred to the hospital. The situation is not good at all."&nbsp;

Another resident was struggling to find out the fate of his father and brother, who he thought could have been in the blast zone.&nbsp;

He told AFP, "The situation around the hospital is very bad. Everyone is trying to find their family members but no one is allowed to go inside the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The death toll from last week’s suicide bombing in an education centre in Afghan capital of Kabul has risen to 53, the United Nations said on Monday.

Among those killed, 46 were girls and young women and at least 110 people were injured, it said. Rports indicated that the bombing was next to a women’s study hall packed with students.&nbsp;

The attack took place on Friday in a Kabul neighbourhood which is historically home to the oppressed Shiite Muslim Hazara community in a majority Sunni Muslim country. According to reports, the former has been subjected to some of the country’s worst violence in recent history.&nbsp;

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) took to Twitter to give an update on Friday’s incident and indicated that their human rights teams are working to document the crime, verify facts and establish reliable data to “counter denial &amp; revisionism”.&nbsp;

The suicide bombing took place at a gender-segregated women’s education centre which reportedly had hundreds of students giving a practice test for university admissions. This is contrary to the claims made by Taliban authorities, according to whom only 25 people were killed and 33 others wounded. No group has claimed&nbsp;responsibility for the attack.&nbsp;

The bombing was one among many attacks since the Taliban took over the country last year. Security has begun to deteriorate in the past couple of months. The Taliban has also blocked many girls and young women&nbsp;from pursuing secondary education.&nbsp;

The incident sparked protests in Kabul and other places in Afghanistan. On Saturday, at least 50 women took to the streets of Dasht-e-Barchi, where the attack happened and chanted, “Stop Hazara genocide, it's not a crime to be a Shiite.” &nbsp;

Reports say Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)&nbsp;carried out a suicide attack in Pakistan's Quetta region.

The terrorist organisation was founded by Baitullah Mehsud in 2007 with alleged links to the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Mehsud was reportedly killed in a US drone strike in 2009 and his successor Hakimullah Mehsud was also killed in 2013.

Suicide attack on Kabul election workers kills one, wounds six

A suicide car bomb attack on a bus carrying police officers and workers in central Afghanistan killed at least five people Saturday, officials said.
