A paramilitary attack on a village in central Sudan on Thursday (June 6) resulted in up to 100 deaths.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been at war with the regular army since April 2023, attacked the village of Wad al-Noura in al-Jazira state twice with heavy artillery on Wednesday (June 5), said the Madani Resistance Committee.

The committee said the feared paramilitaries attacked the village, causing widespread displacement and casualties.

The committee shared footage on social media, calling it a mass grave in the public square, showing rows of white shrouds laid out in a courtyard.

Over a year, the war has killed tens of thousands of people, including up to 15,000 in&nbsp;West Darfur town alone.

The war's actual death toll remains unclear. US special envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, cited estimates as high as "150,000."

The RSF has repeatedly laid siege to and attacked entire villages across Sudan, particularly in the agricultural state of Al-Jazira.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the military leader of Sudan, reportedly requested in a letter that his envoy to Sudan be withdrawn, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was "shocked," according to his spokesperson. According to a written statement released by the UN on Friday, Stephane Dujarric, "The Secretary-General is proud of the work done by (UN special representative to Sudan) Volker Perthes and reaffirms his full confidence in his Special Representative."

The weeklong ceasefire which is being monitored by the US and Saudi Arabia was off to a shaky start after witnesses since late Monday&nbsp;in the capital, Khartoum, have been reporting&nbsp;fighter jets over the city and continued fighting in some areas. Meanwhile, the observers from the two countries noted that the “fighting in Khartoum appeared to be less intense”.&nbsp;

The agreement came after the warring Sudanese army and paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had previously violated multiple ceasefire agreements. Washington and Riyadh addressing the reports said there is some indication that “both sides violated the agreement” but stressed that the efforts to deliver “lifesaving assistance” to the people of Sudan are underway.&nbsp;

<h2>'Heartbreaking': UN Human Rights chief about&nbsp;Sudan</h2>

According to recent data from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), more than 1,800 people have lost their lives since the fighting began on April 15. The conflict has also worsened the country’s humanitarian crisis as over a million people have been forced to flee their homes.&nbsp;

The IMO, on Wednesday, said 319,000 people have sought refuge in neighbouring countries out of which, over 132,000 refugees arrived in Egypt; 80,000 in Chad; and 69,000 in South Sudan. “In spite of successive ceasefires, civilians continue to be exposed to serious risk of death and injury,” said UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk.&nbsp;

He also called the situation in Sudan “heartbreaking,” at a press briefing in Geneva and went on to address the two warring generals directly and said, “General (Abdel Fattah) al-Burhan, General (Mohamed Hamdan) Dagalo, you must issue clear instructions, in no uncertain terms to all those under your command, that there is zero tolerance for sexual violence...civilians must be spared and you must stop this senseless violence now.”&nbsp;

Turk also said that his office has found at least 25 cases of sexual violence so far but believes that the real number is much higher.&nbsp;

<h2>Fighting continues with some respite</h2>

Columns of black smoke could be seen rising into the air in areas west of central Khartoum, while witnesses told Reuters, on Wednesday that there was shelling near an army camp in the southern part of the capital city.&nbsp;

In Omdurman, witnesses said that an army fighter plane had been shot down, the footage of which appeared on social media but could not independently be verified. Additionally, gunfire was heard in the Jabra neighbourhood of southern Khartoum.&nbsp;

Ali Mohammed, a resident of the Sudanese capital city, as per AFP&nbsp;said that the water supply had not been restored as of Wednesday “but at least I was able to go out and buy water for my family”.&nbsp;

Another resident, 55-year-old, Mohammed Taher, said he was finally able to go to the city’s central market “five kilometres away to buy food and return without incident”.&nbsp;

Sudan witnesses clashes amid ceasefire; more than a million people displaced due to fighting

The conflict in Sudan has put the lives of millions of children at risk. Thousands have escaped but many are still trapped in the escalating violence. The UN’s children's agency says the closure of schools has also affected their mental health and well-being, and says the country is facing what it calls a 'generational catastrophe'.

368,000 children left homeless

The United Nations said on Friday that about 200,000 people have by now fled Sudan to escape the violence. The agency also warned that a factory producing life-saving treatments for malnourished children had burned down.

"As violence in Sudan continues for a fourth week, nearly 200,000 refugees and returnees have been forced to flee the country, with more crossing borders daily seeking safety," UN refugee agency spokeswoman Olga Sarrado told reporters in Geneva.

Violence erupted in Sudan in mid-April.

The UN's migration agency said earlier this week that 700,000 more people have also been displaced within the country.&nbsp;

More than 750 people have been killed in violence which has gone on for nearly a month. Two sides have signed the agreement on Thursday during talks in Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.

They have not yet agreed to a ceasefire in the thorny talks, but they did vow to protect civilians and committed to let in badly needed humanitarian assistance.

UN's Sudan envoy, Volker Perthes, said the agreement was important since it marked "a mutual commitment", even if it was only to adhere to international laws they should have been following anyway.&nbsp;

"I think it is a first step, it is an important first step," he told reporters in Geneva via video link from Port Sudan, hailing in particular that the sides had committed "continue talks" under US and Saudi mediation.

"We expect these talks on ceasefire to start off again from today or from tomorrow."

Immediate improvement in situation appears unlikely however. Two forces exchanged fire in Sudan's capital Khartoum on Friday.

UNICEF has warned that a factory in the Sudanese capital, which was producing therapeutic food to combat malnourishment had burned down. The agency has said that this has destroyed life-saving treatment for 14,500 children.

"This is the darkest, most distinct illustration to date of how this conflict threatens the lives of children through multiple means," UNICEF spokesman James Elder told reporters in Geneva.

Children are also heavily represented among those who are fleeing Sudan.

Olga Sarrado said that for neighbouring Chad, some 30,000 refugees had arrived in recent days. This has brought total number to 60,000. This represents those who have arrived in Sudan in just recent weeks.

"Almost 90 per cent of refugees are children and women, including many pregnant women," she said.

A full 20 per cent of children between the ages of six months and five years had been found to be acutely malnourished.

In all the countries people are fleeing to, "the humanitarian response is challenging and costly," Sarrado said.

According to the Indian Air Force, the C-17 aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station, near New Delhi, on the intervening night of May 3rd and 4th.&nbsp;The heavy-lifter aircraft made a pit stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where keeping in mind the challenges of refuelling in its conflict-hit destination, Sudan, it tanked up on extra fuel.

This mission was undertaken to repatriate 192 passengers - mostly women, children and elderly individuals, who were either NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India). The military aircraft had to fly from Jeddah to Sudan and then directly back to India in a non-stop flight, as the passengers were not permitted to land in Jeddah.

Given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the military aircraft performing repatriation flights are landing at their own risk and must undertake necessary measures for their safety. As part of the daring mission, the C-17 aircrew, as per the IAF, "carried out an overhead steep tactical arrival followed by an assault approach to land the heavy jet."&nbsp;

IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Ashish Moghe explained to WION that the steep landings are performed in order to safeguard from the threats of small-arms fire from the ground.&nbsp;

He added that the angle of approach during such a landing would be higher than that of a conventional landing. As the aircraft stood on the tarmac and passengers boarded, the plane's engines were kept running in precautionary anticipation of a quick exit. &nbsp;

While flying back from Sudan to India, the C-17 crew faced another unplanned emergency when one of the passengers fell unconscious. However, the crew immediately handled the situation and stabilised the patient by providing him with oxygen. IAF said that the C-17 carrying 192 passengers from Sudan landed at Ahmedabad late Thursday evening and then at the home base of Hindon, later that night. The C-17 Globemaster III flew close to 9600 km as part of this mission, with the aircrew flying extended duty periods of nearly 24 hours.

Briefing the press in Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado said that "over 100,000 refugees are estimated to be among those who have now fled Sudan to neighbouring countries, including Sudanese refugees, South Sudanese returning home prematurely, and others who were themselves refugees in Sudan."

The number of internally displaced people as per the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) stands at an estimated 334,000. As per a situation report released by the agency: "the total estimate of displaced individuals across Sudan has reached 334,053".

IOM spokesperson Paul Dillon, as per Reuters, revealed that the number of people displaced in the last two weeks has exceeded "all conflict-related displacement in Sudan in 2022."

"About 72 per cent, roughly 240,000 of these new internal displacements were reported in West and South Darfur alone," he told reporters.

"In many cases, the small convoys are in a sense running the gauntlet between warring factions and it's an extremely difficult and dangerous situation for those who are embarking on these journeys," said Dillon.

(it is) facing a funding gap of $1.5 billion," said the UN humanitarian agency's spokesperson Jens Laerke.

More than 500 people have been killed since battles erupted on April 15 between the forces of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his number two Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), AFP news agency reports.

In Khartoum, which houses around five million people, gunfire and artillery fire continued to persist as thousands of residents tried to flee the capital city due to massive shortages of food, water, and electricity.

The situation was no different in other parts of the country where thousands of people have been uprooted from their place and forced to go on arduous trips to neighbouring Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and Ethiopia to flee the battles.

According to the United Nations (UN), more than 50,000 Sudanese refugees&nbsp;— mostly women and children — have crossed over to Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, amidst fears of regional instability.

Whereas around 75,000 have been displaced by the fighting in Khartoum and the states of Blue Nile, North Kordofan, as well as the western region of Darfur, the UN said.

Ethnic fighting and turmoil have scarred South Sudan and the Central African Republic for years while a 2021 coup has derailed Chad's own democratic transition.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres rued over the continued violence.

"There is no right to go on fighting for power when the country is falling apart," Antonio Guterres told Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television.

Despite agreeing to multiple truces, both forces have remained steadfast in their resolve even as civilian casualties continued to mount.

The recent three-day ceasefire —due to expire at midnight (2200 GMT) Sunday —was agreed on Thursday after it was brokered by the United States, Saudi Arabia, the African Union and the United Nations.

UN chief Guterres called for African-led mediation efforts for an ever-lasting peace in the conflict-torn country.

"My appeal is for everything to be done to support an African-led initiative for peace in Sudan," he told Al Arabiya.

The fighting has also triggered a mass exodus of foreigners and international staff.

Britons blocked from boarding rescue flights

According to the Guardian newspaper, thousands of British nations are stranded in Sudan after they were prevented by the country’s armed forces from reaching the last rescue flights out of the war-torn country on Saturday.

It was announced that 1,888 people on 21 flights have been evacuated from Sudan – the vast majority of them British nationals and their dependents – but the last flight was yet to leave despite being scheduled to depart at 6 pm.

The Conservative chair of the foreign affairs select committee, Alicia Kearns, told the&nbsp;newspaper that she had received information that elements of the Sudanese Armed Forces had blocked British nationals as they attempted to navigate the treacherous route to an airbase north of Khartoum.

The European Union's ambassador to Sudan is veteran Irish diplomat Aidan O'Hara. EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali told AFP that he was "OK" following the assault.

"The security of the staff is our priority," she said. "The EU delegation has not been evacuated. Security measures are being assessed."

Both sides claimed on Monday that they had made gains as smoke hung over the capital Khartoum. People reported that airstrikes, artillery fire and shooting have cut off basic services and damaged hospitals in a city that is unused to violence.

Videos and photos from the international airport being aired on television showed a raging fire with plumes of black smoke. Satellite images showed several planes damaged by the strikes.

The Khartoum violence and in nearby cities of Omdurman and Bahri since Saturday is the worst in decades. There is risk of Sudan being torn between two military factions that once shared power during a rocky political transition.

Army Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan currently heads a ruling council installed after a 2021 coup and the 2019 ousting of veteran leader Omar Bashir during mass protests. RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, is his deputy.

An internationally backed transition plan mandated that the RSF will merge with the army. But Burhan on Monday ordered the group to be dissolved as the two sides exchanged bitter accusations.

Burhan told Sky News that he was secure in a presidential guesthouse within the defence ministry compound and that his goal was to defeat the RSF. However, he did not rule out some form of negotiation.

"Every war ends at the negotiation table even if the opponent is defeated", Burhan said.

Meanwhile, RSF leader Hemedti, who currently is in an undisclosed location, called for the international community to take action against what he called Burhan's crimes. In a tweet, he called the army chief "a radical Islamist who is bombing civilians from the air".

If the violence continues to escalate, it could destabilise a volatile region and play into competition for influence there between Russia and the United States, among other regional powers.&nbsp;

Egypt has been wary of political change in Khartoum and is the biggest backer of Sudan's armed forces. Hemedti has cultivated ties with several foreign powers including the United Arab Emirates and Russia.

The situation didn't seem to be calming down on Monday as neither side was willing to back down. While the army is larger and has air power, the RSF is widely deployed inside neighbourhoods of Khartoum and other cities, making it hard for either side to secure a quick victory.
