Study: Body Releases Happy Hormones In Presence Of Loved Ones

In a new study, an alarming claim has been made about microplastics being present in the lungs, hearts, and brains of newborns.

In a new study carried out by researchers from Rutgers University, it was observed that after newborn mice were exposed to polyamide-12, or PA-12 through inhalation. After this tiny plastic pieces were found inside their lungs, hearts, livers, kidneys, and brains.

In the research, it was seen that microplastics can pass through the placenta during pregnancy and can even expose the developing fetus.

Scientists did not rule out the possibility of fragments passing through the mother's milk after the child's birth, however, the presence of microplastics at such an early stage of life was alarming.

"Nobody wants plastic in their liver," said Phoebe Stapleton, who is an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Rutgers University. "Now that we know it's there – as well as in other organs – the next step is to understand why and what that means," she added.

How MNP exposure at the infant stage will impact lives?

Microplastic pollutants have already been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, however, researchers are now worried about the long-term implications of this MNP exposure.

As per the report, exposure to pollutants and chemicals at an early stage of life will increase the risk of health problems and chronic illnesses.

"These results raise concerns for the toxicological impacts associated with MNPs exposure, maternal-fetal health, and systemic MNPs particle deposition," wrote the researchers, in their published paper.

"I don't think we'll ever get rid of plastics altogether. They're too important for modern life," said Stapleton.

"But I do think we might get to a point where we'll have some policies to indicate which ones are less toxic than others," he added.

Fetus absorbing microplastics which persist post-birth, claims alarming study

In human biology, blood type has a significant role to play and is known to impact a person's well-being in various ways.

In a new study, unravelling one of the major impacts of blood type, it has been found that some blood types carry the increased risk of triggering an early stroke.

In biology, human blood types have been distinguished using the ABO blood group system, which categorises them as A, B, AB, and O blood types.

The blood types are given these labels on the basis of particular chemical components present in their red blood cells.

Blood type and its connection with stroke

In 2022, a detailed research venture looked into the connections between the chances of having an early stroke and the gene responsible for the A1 subgroup.

The data from 48 genetic studies, which included 17,000 stroke patients and nearly 600,000 non-stroke individuals—all ranging between the ages 18 and 59—was scrutinised by the researchers.

A genome-wide search was conducted by the researchers and two locations were found to be strongly associated with an earlier risk of stroke.

One of these locations was found to be coinciding with the site where the gene for blood type was present.

After the researchers closely looked at specific blood type genes, they found that those people whose genome had a version of the A group had a 16 per cent higher chance of suffering stroke before they turned 60 in comparison to other blood types.

Meanwhile, individuals who had a gene for group O1 were at 12 per cent lower stroke risk.

Senior author and vascular neurologist Steven Kittner from the University of Maryland shared these findings.

The experts emphasised that people with type A blood had extra stroke risk, however, it is not very high and they need to go through regular check-ups.

As per experts, the increased risk is likely related to components which are involved in blood clot formation, which include platelets, cells lining blood vessels, and other circulating proteins.

In the study, when people who suffered a stroke before 60 were compared to those who had one after that age, it was found that increased stroke risk with type A blood significantly declined in the late-onset stroke group.

Does your blood type carry a high risk of triggering a stroke? Here's what a study says

In a new study, scientists have claimed that the Universe is only 27 billion years old and does not have any dark matter.

The study was conducted by Rajendra Gupta, professor of physics at the University of Ottawa. Gupta suggested that dark matter or dark energy might not be required to explain the workings of the universe.

The research of the professor is based on a model that combines two theories: “tired light” (TL) and covarying coupling constants (CCC).

The CCC theory challenges the idea that things like the speed of light or the charge of an electron are fundamental constants of nature that do not change.

However, if the CCC theory is right, it changes the understanding of everything that is present in the universe.

According to the “Tired Light” idea, light loses energy across long distances, which causes redder wavelengths and does not require the universe to expand.

When these two models are placed together, they provide a new framework for understanding cosmic phenomena.

Here's what the scientist suggests about dark matter and universe

According to the findings of Gupta, the new model changed the facts about the universe.

“The study’s findings confirm our previous work, which suggested that the universe is 26.7 billion years old, negating the necessity for dark matter’s existence,” Gupta explained

“Contrary to standard cosmological theories where the accelerated expansion of the universe is attributed to dark energy, our findings indicate that this expansion is due to the weakening forces of nature, not dark energy,” he added.

A major part of the research carried out by Gupta focused on “redshifts" in which light stretches to the red end of the spectrum while travelling through space.

After analysing data on the distribution of galaxies at low redshifts and the patterns seen in the early universe at high redshifts, he claimed that dark matter did not exist.

“There are several papers that question the existence of dark matter, but mine is the first one, to my knowledge, that eliminates its cosmological existence while being consistent with key cosmological observations that we have had time to confirm,” Gupta explained.

Universe is no older than 27 billion years and there is nothing like dark matter: Study

In a new study, a team of planetary scientists and engineers from Western University's Institute for Earth and Space Exploration in Canada have proposed a unique possibility of making food for space travellers using asteroids.

No, this does not mean they suggested that the space travellers eat some rocks, they rather suggested feeding bacteria to asteroid material that can lead to the growth of edible biomass, which will help in making food.

The study was published in the paper "International Journal of Astrobiology". In the paper, the researchers have stated that they have tested how much asteroid material will be required for creating edible biomass.

This new idea has been proposed by scientists to ensure food safety for astronauts who travel in deep space.

As per the study, scientists have suggested that asteroids can fulfil the nutritional needs of astronauts.

How will asteroids help produce food in space?

According to the idea, the carbon content of space rocks will be broken down and will be made into something edible.

There is a need for such food as astronauts carry a limited amount of dried food in space, and space farming has not yet come into existence.

Speaking to The New York Times, engineering professor at Western University in Ontario Joshua Pearce said that asteroids are very similar to plastic.

This study was led by researchers at Michigan Technology University and was taken ahead from a US Department of Defence project that was aimed at making edible food from plastic waste.

The process is called pyrolysis and in this plastic is broken down into oil, solids, and gas.

In a bioreactor, oil is fed to bacteria, which then produce 'biomass' with nutritional properties.

Separate research was conducted by Annemiek Waajen of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to confirm whether microbes actually eat asteroid material. In this process, microbes were fed pieces of meteorite which fell on Earth.

In the research, which was published in the journals Astrobiology and Scientific Reports, Dr. Waajen said that the microbes consumed the rocks and then grew.

After analysing the evidence, Dr. Pearce and his team finalised the asteroid Bennu.

As per their calculations, if its carbon content gets broken down by microbes, it will be able to support an astronaut for at least 600 years.

"It is something that’s still a long way away," said Dr. Waajen, who was not part of the research.

However, scientists need to carry out toxicity tests of these biomass meals and ensure it is safe for the astronauts.

In a stunning study, astronomers have found that small primordial black holes (PBHs) are likely lurking inside the moons, asteroids or even planets like Earth.

According to the scientists, these hypothetical black holes were created soon after the Big Bang and resulted from pockets of subatomic matter that were so dense that they faced gravitational collapse.

Presently, scientists consider PBHs as dark matter. It is a likely source of primordial gravitational waves.

According to recent research, small PBHs are likely present in the interiors of main-sequence neutron and dwarf stars and are slowly consuming their gas supply.

A team of physicists, in a recent study, proposed the idea to include a new avenue for finding PBHs.

Here's how scientists are trying to find PBHs

The team planned to find them inside planets and asteroids by using large plates or slabs of metal for detecting PBHs for signs of their passage.

Scientists are finding the microchannels that these bodies would leave so that they are able to find the existence of PBHs.

The research was carried out by De-Chang Dai, a physicist at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan and the Center for Education and Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics (CERCA) at Case Western Reserve University, as well as Dejan Stojkovic, who is a physicist from the High Energy Physics and Cosmology group at the State University of New York, Buffalo.

In the paper, the findings were detailed and it is to be published in the journal Physics of the Dark Universe after the review.

For decades, scientists have been on a hunt for the PBHs since their existence was found by Russian scientists Igor D. Novikov and Yakov Zeldovich in 1966.

Speaking to Universe Today about why they proposed novel detection methods for PBHs through email, De-Chang and Stojkovic said, "If an asteroid, or a moon, or a small planet (planetoid) has a liquid core surrounded by a solid crust, then a small PBH will consume the dense liquid core relatively quickly (within weeks to months). The crust will remain intact if the material is strong enough to support gravitational stress."

"Thus, we will end up with a hollow structure. If the central black hole is ejected (due to collisions with other objects), the density will be lower than the usual density of a rocky object with a liquid core," they added.

"We found, for example, that granite can support hollow structures up to the radius of 1/10 of the Earth's radius. That is why we should concentrate on planetoids, moons, or asteroids," said Stojkovic.

Are black holes hiding inside planets like Earth? Here's what scientists suggest

In a new study, neuroscientists have found that the brain's same neurons get activated when they hear a person's name or pronouns like "he", "she" or "they".

According to scientists, there are these so-called concept cells that store information regarding the representations of people, objects or abstract concepts.

It was observed that concept cells get activated when the picture of someone specific is seen or when they hear or read the person's name or when they recall a specific person from the memory.

It has also been found that they get reactivated when the pronoun is used instead of the name of a person.

How was the study carried out?

The study was done on the basis of brain recordings taken from patients who suffered from intractable epilepsy. The electrodes were implanted deep inside their hippocampus to identify the origin of their seizures.

These implants also helped the scientists study how individual neurons in the hippocampus work during wakeful activity.

The participants of the study were given a picture of Shrek, and it was noticed that a particular neuron got activated on seeing the photo.

When the participant read the book "Shrek and Courtney Love", the same neuron got activated on the appearance of the name "Shrek" and the pronoun "he" which was used to refer to the central character in the later part of the book.

However, when the participants read the pronoun "she", the same neuron was not activated.

"We had the participants answer a question at the end of the sentences about who performed the action," stated neuroscientist Matthew Self, who is from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience.

"We could predict whether the patients would give the correct answer based on the activity of the individual concept cells," he further explained.

The volunteers were also made to read sentences in which two characters shared the same pronouns. In such cases, it was observed that the person who evoked the most activity was identified with the pronoun later.

"This could be based on chance fluctuations in activity on a trial-by-trial basis or an internal preference for one of the two characters in the sentence," Self said.

In the findings, it was observed that concept cells link the brain to the information of an already existing concept.

"For example, when we read about Shrek that 'he' put on sunglasses, we can update Shrek's representation and predict his future appearance," stated the authors of the study.

"Theories about the evolving mental representation of the narrative during reading suggest that previously read words are stored in working memory so that they can be combined with new information. How brain networks implement such syntactic computations is a topic for future research, which can now be investigated," they added.

"This could be based on chance fluctuations in activity on a trial-by-trial basis or an internal preference for one of the two characters in the sentence," Self said. Also Read: Brains of humans and dogs can sync with each other. Study explains how In the findings, it was observed that concept cells link the brain to the information of an already existing concept. (With inputs from agencies)

A new study has uncovered a potential link between chemicals used in food packaging and a higher risk of breast cancer. Substances like bisphenols and phthalates, frequently found in plastic and other packaging materials, have been shown to interfere with hormonal activity, possibly leading to the formation of cancerous cells. Health experts are now advocating for greater awareness and stricter regulations to reduce consumer exposure to these dangerous chemicals.

In a new study, the researchers have observed that the grey matter of the brain is probably shrinking by 80 per cent during pregnancy and creating "permanent etchings".

The researchers made the discovery when a pregnant neuroscientist went through two dozen brain scans during her pregnancy phase and then for the next two years postpartum.

Grey matter is one kind of tissue present in the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) which is important for humans to function normally.

After the pregnancy came to an end, it was observed that the woman was able to regain some grey matter. The grey matter regained included the cell bodies of neurons and the connections present between them.

Co-senior author of the study and associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Emily Jacobs said that the grey-matter volume in the affected brain areas of pregnant women decreased by 4 per cent on average.

Extreme weather to impact 70 per cent of humans in next 20 years, reveals study

The Chinese researchers for the first time have found evidence which hints at the possibility of syncing up of brains between humans and dogs.

The study suggests that if humans feel connected suddenly while gazing into the big and watery eyes of a dog, they may be going through brain synchronisation.

The study underlines the possibility of humans bonding with dogs at a deep neurological level.

Studies have previously shown that when humans talk or work with each other, the key regions of the brain activity also sync up.

However, this is the first time a similar phenomenon has been observed between humans and dogs.

Here's how researchers decoded how the brains of humans and dogs sync

The brain activity in humans and dogs was measured by the researchers by putting electrodes on the skull.

In the trial, the researchers matched the 10 young beagles with unknown humans after the pairs got acquainted with each other in the next five days.

During the experiments, the pairs of humans and dogs participated in nonverbal communication.

As part of it, humans and dogs remained in the same room and made no interactions.

"We observed that inter-brain correlations in frontal and parietal regions dramatically increased… during mutual gaze," wrote the authors of the study, headed by biologist Wei Ren from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The team observed patterns of synchronisation as human participants petted the dogs, however, the synchrony was stronger in the parietal brain region.

While checking the data in every interaction between humans and dogs, the team discovered it was the human brains which initiated the coupled neural activity.

In the course of the study, there was growth in inter-brain synchronisation between the human-dog pairs, which suggested that there was bonding happening between the two.

Brains of humans and dogs can sync with each other. Study explains how

In a new breakthrough research, scientists have observed that a brain network grows twice in size in people suffering from depression.

This network is known as the frontostriatal salience network and although, how this region of the brain functions has not been fully understood, it has been earlier linked to filtering of external stimuli and reward processing in the brain.

The research was carried out by a team from Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City and the researchers believe that this discovery will help in creating future treatments for dementia, especially one which is specifically targeted to the brain network.

"We found that the frontostriatal salience network is expanded nearly twofold in the cortex of most individuals with depression," wrote the researchers in the paper.

"This effect was replicable in several samples and caused primarily by network border shifts, with three distinct modes of encroachment occurring in different individuals," they added.

How do the researchers analyse the brain network?

The research hinted that the frontostriatal salience network could enter a space which is generally the domain of other functional networks. The researchers have observed such border shifts getting inherited genetically in people.

The research can be used for precise functional mapping which can give the researchers a detailed look into every individual brain.

The researchers carried out an initial analysis of brain scans of 57 individuals - who were an average age of 41 - and compared it to 37 healthy controls which were identified in the frontostriatal salience network expansion.

The tests were also carried out on a smaller group over a year and a half and the brain image data collected from 114 children before and after a depression diagnosis showed similar results.

"Salience network expansion was stable over time, unaffected by mood state, and detectable in children before the onset of depression later in adolescence," stated the researchers.

The observation of the frontostriatal salience network expansion in the kids before diagnosis of depression suggested that it was a contributor to depression and a risk factor.

"These findings identify a trait-like brain network topology that may confer risk for depression and mood-state-dependent connectivity changes in frontostriatal circuits that predict the emergence and remission of depressive symptoms over time," the researchers wrote in the paper.

The tracks, which appeared to date back to 120 and 128 million years ago, included 18 such footprints which were of theropods.

The study's lead author and professor at Emory University’s Department of Environmental Sciences Anthony Martin said, “These numerous tracks are the best evidence yet that these former polar environments supported large carnivores. The large theropods would likely have fed on prey such as smaller dinosaurs, fish, and turtles.”

What are theropod dinosaurs?

Theropod dinosaurs are a type of bipedal dinosaur which have three clawed toes. They are part of the same evolutionary group which has species like Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex, and Velociraptor.

“The hip height of that theropod would have been about the same as the full height of a tall, modern-day human – or a bit more than six feet tall,” said Martin.

“Our find of so many theropod tracks, however, confirms that a variety of dinosaurs actually lived and walked on the ground where their bones were found,” emphasised Martin. “Dinosaur tracks are actually much more common at the site than we previously realised," he added.

According to the scientists, the newly-found tracks were likely formed when the dinosaurs roamed on mud or wet sand in the floodplain.

The study's lead author and professor at Emory University’s Department of Environmental Sciences Anthony Martin said, “These numerous tracks are the best evidence yet that these former polar environments supported large carnivores. The large theropods would likely have fed on prey such as smaller dinosaurs, fish, and turtles.” What are theropod dinosaurs? Theropod dinosaurs are a type of bipedal dinosaur which have three clawed toes. They are part of the same evolutionary group which has species like Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex, and Velociraptor. In this discovery, the scientists found the largest theropod track 18.5 inches in length. Also Read: 26,000-year-old human, animal footprints unearthed in Spain. It once was a settlement of... (With inputs from agencies)

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy said that parents can create an environment of discipline for children at home to make them study.

While responding to a question of how students should focus on their studies in the social media era on September 9 (Monday), Murthy said that the parents cannot watch movies themselves and ask children simultaneously to study.

Murthy said that he and his wife Sudha Murthy used to spend more than three and a half hours every day reading along with their children Akshata and Rohan Murty when they were in school.

Laying out the timetable of the family, Murthy said that the family focused on reading and studying from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm local time and television remained banned.

The family then used to have dinner and again study together from 9 pm to 11 pm local time to create a culture of discipline.

“My wife's logic was, if I am watching TV, I cannot tell my children to study. So she said, I will sacrifice my TV time, and I will also study,” Murthy said.

“But that's not as important as creating an environment of discipline in learning. That leadership by example is the responsibility of the parents,” said Murthy.

“If the parents are going and seeing movies and then telling ‘children, no, no, you study’ (that won’t work),” he added.

A new study conducted in Denmark has linked infertility to different types of pollution among men and women. While air pollution is associated with increased infertility risk in men, noise pollution leads to a higher risk of infertility in women.

The study, published in the BMJ, drew from a database of 526,056 men and 377,850 women aged 30 to 45 who had less than two children, were cohabiting or married and had lived in the Nordic country between 2000 and 2017. The study did not include sterilised men and women who had undergone surgery to prevent pregnancy.

The study stated that men exposed to air pollution over an average of five years had a higher risk of infertility, which further adds to evidence about the impact of fine particulate matter on human health.

“Based on a nationwide cohort, designed to include a high proportion of people actively trying to achieve pregnancy, we found that PM2.5 was associated with a higher risk of an infertility diagnosis among men," the study noted.

As for infertility among women aged 35 to 45, noise pollution was the leading cause of infertility.

"Road traffic noise was associated with a higher risk of an infertility diagnosis among women older than 35 years, and possibly among men older than 37 years," the study added.

During the 18-year period, infertility was diagnosed in 16,172 men and 22,672 women. Exposure to levels of PM2.5 that were 2.9 micrograms per cubic metre higher than average over five years was associated with a 24 per cent increased risk of infertility.

“As many western countries are facing declining birthrates and increasing maternal age at the birth of a first child, knowledge on environmental pollutants affecting fertility is crucial," the study stated.

"If our results are confirmed in future studies, it suggests that political implementation of air pollution and noise mitigations may be important tools for improving birthrates in the western world.”

A new review commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has found no evidence linking mobile phone use to an increased risk of brain cancer. Watch in for more details!

WHO-backed study: Mobile phones not linked to brain cancer

Mobile phones are not linked to brain and neck cancers, one of the biggest and most comprehensive studies conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), in association with the New Zealand Ministry of Health, has shown.

For years, the common notion was that mobile phones emitting radio waves, a type of non-ionising radiation, could cause brain cancer or other forms of tumours.

However, the review, which included 64 observational studies documenting the use of phones and its effect on the human body, published between 1994 and 2022 with participants from 22 countries, has stated clearly that there is no link between any type of cancer caused by mobile usage.

“We concluded the evidence does not show a link between mobile phones and brain cancer or other head and neck cancers.”

The review looked at cancers of the brain in adults and children, as well as cancer of the pituitary gland, salivary glands and leukaemias, and risks linked to mobile phone use, base stations, or transmitters, as well as occupational exposure.

Additionally, the study clarified that there was no association with cancer even if a person used a mobile phone for 10 or more years (prolonged use). Importantly, the study shows despite the rise in the use of wireless technologies in recent years, there has been no rise in the incidence of brain cancers.

“None of the major questions studied showed increased risks," said Mark Elwood, co-author of the study and professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

In a new study, the scientists have claimed that all blue-eyed people are descendants of one European who was living between 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Originally, humans had only brown eyes in various shades till a specific mutation led to a significant change.

Why do humans have blue eyes?

According to the scientists, the mutation is a gene known as HERC2 and it switches off OCA2, which is the gene which helps in determining how much brown pigment we produce.

This is the reason why our eyes turn blue.

The scientists then found out that every blue-eyed person has descended from the same person because all of them have the same mutation.

According to scientists, blue eyes are possessed by only 8 to 10 per cent of the population.

They added that sometimes eyes fail to fully develop in childhood which means that the brown pigment can come later and make blue-eyed children turn into brown eyes adults.

The team, which consists of a group from the University of Copenhagen, was able to discover a genetic mutation which happened 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, who led the study, said, "Originally, we all had brown eyes. But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a ‘switch,’ which literally "turned off" the ability to produce brown eyes."

The P protein is involved in the production of melanin and it contains the OCA2 gene codes which have the pigment which determines the colour of hair, eyes, and skin.

The pigment does not create a blue colour but turns off the mechanism through which brown melanin pigment is produced and effectively "dilutes" brown eyes to blue.

In the Cretaceous period, the most advanced herbivorous dinosaurs, known as hadrosaurs, were known to have formidable teeth.

In a new study, it has been revealed that these dinosaurs had developed thousands of teeth because of their voracious appetite for plants.

The researchers looked into the evolutionary trajectory of the ornithopods, which was a group of dinosaurs that encompassed Iguanodon, Hypsilophodon, rare rhabdodontids and the hadrosaurs.

At the end of the Cretaceous period, these herbivorous dinosaurs were reigning across vast swathes of the planet.

In the research, headed by Dr. Attila Ősi from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, it was highlighted that the teeth and jaws of ornithopods went through drastic changes during their evolution.

The Iguanodon, which was an early member of the ornithopods, needed more than 200 days to form their teeth and it took the same amount of time for the teeth to wear out because of chewing.

In the later part of the Cretaceous, the hadrosaurs were seen gnawing through their teeth in just 50 days.

Evolution of teeth in dinosaurs

As per the researchers, the ornithopods indulged in binge-eating of tough plants because of which their teeth eroded rapidly.

The dinosaurs had to deploy reinforcements and create reserves of teeth in their skulls which prevented them from going hungry.

“Across a herbivore’s life, its teeth gradually wear down,” said study co-author Professor Paul Barrett.

Because of the constant wear and tear, the tooth eventually vanished in some of the dinosaurs.

The reptiles, however, solved this dental dilemma by producing new teeth continuously. Because of this dinosaur teeth have today become the holy grail for researchers who wish to understand early animal evolution.

“At the start, they had single rows of fairly simple teeth with limited wear, probably because these dinosaurs focused on fruits and softer plants,” Professor Paul said.

People who have a good height remain at greater risk of developing cancer, as per a new study.

The World Cancer Research Fund stated that there is evidence that hints at taller people having more chance of getting cancer like the pancreas, ovary, prostate, kidney, skin (melanoma), breast (pre- and post-menopausal), large bowel and uterus (endometrium).

The UK Million Women Study has discovered that in 15 out of the 17 cancers investigated, taller people were found more likely to have them.

Also Read: THIS blood test can detect deadly brain cancer in one hour. Here's how

In the study, it was found that every ten-centimetre increase in height also increased the chances of getting cancer by around 16 per cent.

The scientists found that the relationship between height and cancer existed across income levels and ethnicities.

How height is linked with cancer?

One reason why taller people are more likely to get cancer is because they have more cells.

For example, there is a longer large bowel in a tall person with more cells which increases his/her chances of large bowel cancer.

According to scientists, cancer develops because of an accumulation of damage in the genes which occurs in a cell when it gets divided and creates new cells.

The more a cell divides, the more it faces the risk of genetic damage which gets passed onto the new cells.

The higher the amount of damage accumulated, the higher the chances of developing cancer.

According to some research, the higher amount of cells in tall people is the reason why they develop cancer, a theory which also explains why men have more chances of getting cancer than women.

Another reason can be a hormone called insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) which may be leading to cancer.

This hormone helps in the growth of children and plays an important role in pushing cell growth and cell division in adults.

The bodies need to produce new cells when old ones get old or are damaged. However, when IGF-1 levels turn higher than average, they suffer a higher risk of developing prostate or breast cancer.

The UK Million Women Study has discovered that in 15 out of the 17 cancers investigated, taller people were found more likely to have them. Here's how In the study, it was found that every ten-centimetre increase in height also increased the chances of getting cancer by around 16 per cent. Watch: Weight-loss drug Ozempic reveals new benefits like slowing down ageing process According to some research, the higher amount of cells in tall people is the reason why they develop cancer, a theory which also explains why men have more chances of getting cancer than women. (With inputs from agencies)

Tall people have a higher chance of getting cancer. Study explains why

With ever-changing social dynamics, people’s love and sexual interests are also evolving with many people finding themselves being drawn to a couple and not just an individual. This phenomenon is new and also becoming common, and this type of relationship also has a name- a symbiosexual relationship.

As per a new study conducted at Seattle University, people may get attracted romantically and sexually to an established couple more rather than an individual.

Published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, the research is titled “Attraction to the Energy, Multidimensionality and Power Shared Between People in Relationships.”

The study's findings offer a new perspective on human desire, suggesting that attraction can be more complex than previously known.

Symbiosexuals date the energy of the relationship. The author explained how it is a genuine desire towards the ‘whole’ of the relationship, not just a person.

Symbiosexuality: New dimension of romance and attraction

The concept of symbiosexuality emerged from observations in cultural and academic discourses that some people are drawn to the relationships between others rather than to individuals themselves. Despite this, the phenomenon has remained largely unexplored, with most discussions on human attraction focusing on one-to-one dynamics.

Dr Sally W. Johnston, the author of the study, suggests re-evaluating the idea that human attraction and desire for these things might not be limited to one-to-one encounters.

Her initial experience with symbiosexual relationships, she said, came from the research she conducted on the treatment of “unicorns” in polyamorous relationships.

A unicorn is a person who enjoys intimacy with a couple but doesn’t take part in other facets of the relationship. This third partner in a relationship is treated poorly, often objectified and shunned despite taking sexual advantage of him/her.

The findings of the recent study were based on The Pleasure Study, a much bigger initiative aimed at exploring multiple dimensions of gender, sexual orientation, relationship patterns, cultural background and particular encounters with couples.

The survey by Johnston administered the 65 questions mentioned in The Pleasure Study.

Johnston only focused on replies from those who said they had been attracted to a couple, which is described as being attracted to two people as a couple rather than to each person individually.

At least 145 of The Pleasure Study’s 373 participants reported experiencing this kind of attraction.

With over 90 per cent of them identifying as queer and 87.5 per cent claiming to be polyamorous, the bulk of the results included white, middle-class university graduates.

However, there was a diverse population of people who experience symbiosexual attraction, said Johnston, in which a person is drawn “to the energy, multidimensionality, and power shared between people in relationships.”

The majority of symbiosexuals identify as extroverted, enjoy a great deal of closeness, affection and consideration, and are less prone to feel jealous.
