The scientists discovered that the growing aridity between the years 1990 and 2015 in Africa has resulted in a 12 per cent loss in its GDP. In particular, some crops like maize are significantly affected, with yields projected to be halved in Kenya by 2050.

It is predicted that in the next half decade, Africa will see a decline of 16 per cent of its GDP while Asia will witness about 7 per cent.

“Unlike droughts—temporary periods of low rainfall—aridity represents a permanent, unrelenting transformation,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the UN convention to combat desertification (UNCCD).

“Droughts end. When an area’s climate becomes drier, however, the ability to return to previous conditions is lost. The drier climates now affecting vast lands across the globe will not return to how they were, and this change is redefining life on Earth.”

Despite being one of the world’s most arid countries and a driving force for desertification across the world, Saudi Arabia has shown reluctance till now, including at the UN framework convention on climate change conference of the parties (Cop) in Azerbaijan the previous month.

According to the report by UNCCD Science-Policy Interface (SPI), the UN body for assessing the science of land degradation and drought, human-caused climate change is the primary driver of this shift as the world fails to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions, intensive agriculture, and other human activities. Additionally, the team led by Professor Song Tiecheng found that efficient codes can be used to solve the issue of disturbances in the frequency changes. This method has been verified by computer models for maintaining 5G communication quality during travel. The paper was published in the journal Railway Signalling &amp; Communication last month.

"A comparison between NCR thermal power plant emissions and paddy straw burning emissions in Punjab and Haryana highlights the scale of SO2 pollution. Thermal power plants in NCR emit 281 kilotonnes of SO2 annually—16 times more than the 17.8 kilotonnes emitted by burning 8.9 million tonnes of paddy straw," notes the study.

The report notes that thermal power plants are a "year-round" pollution source.

"While paddy straw burning causes seasonal spikes, thermal power plants represent a larger, persistent pollution source year-round, underscoring the need for stricter controls on thermal power plant emissions. Yet, thermal power plants often receive leniency and repeated compliance extensions, especially for installing FGDs, whereas stubble burning is heavily penalised, with strict enforcement on farmers during the burning season."

<h2>What can be done? &nbsp;</h2>

The CREA study highlights the potential of flue gas desulfurisation (FGD) technology to reduce emissions by 67 per cent, bringing SO2 levels in NCR thermal plants down to 93 kilotonnes annually.&nbsp;

"Over 96 per cent of particulate pollution from coal-fired power plants in the NCR is secondary in nature, primarily originating from SO2. Reducing SO2 emissions can significantly decrease the secondary particulate matter load, thereby reducing the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to these particles," explained Manoj Kumar, an analyst at CREA. &nbsp;

"SO2 levels often meet the NAAQS because, once released, it quickly transforms into sulfates—secondary particles that are major components of PM2.5. These secondary particles have a longer lifetime and pose serious health risks. This hidden transformation of SO2 into harmful particles emphasises the necessity for FGD installation," he added.

While thermal plants are a significant source of pollution, vehicular emissions accounted for 15.8 per cent of Delhi’s pollution on Sunday, according to the government’s Decision Support System for Air Quality Management. Meanwhile, stubble burning spiked on Saturday, contributing 25 per cent of the city's pollution.&nbsp;

“On one side are those who think it is an authentic shroud of Jesus Christ, on the other, those who think it is a forgery. But I am inclined towards another approach: that it is, in fact, a work of Christian art, which managed to convey its intended message very successfully," Moraes said.&nbsp;

A virtual simulation was created by Moraes in which the shroud's recreation was placed over a body.

Once it was laid, the fabric showed “a distorted and significantly more robust image” than that present on the shroud because of the change from 3D to 2D.

“When you wrap a 3D object with a fabric, and that object leaves a pattern like blood stains, these stains generate a more robust and more deformed structure in relation to the source,” wrote Moraes.

“So, roughly speaking, what we see as a result of printing stains from a human body would be a more swollen and distorted version of it, not an image that looks like a photocopy. A bas-relief, however, wouldn’t cause the image to deform, resulting in a figure that resembles a photocopy of the body," he added.

Moraes said that the printing stains from a human body are likely to be more swollen and added that the impression created by a 3D body on the shroud should have a striking difference.

Moraes said that even the findings like scalp and toes spread outwardly did not match up.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the expert also did not find the imprinting of the torso, groin, and neck area on the cloth.

“It seems to me more like a non-verbal iconographic work that has very successfully served the purpose of the religious message contained within,” Moraes said.

For centuries, many people have questioned the legitimacy of the Shroud of Turin.

In 1390, the Vatican also expressed doubt over its status when Pope Clement VII announced that the cloth was not used to wrap the body of Jesus and instead, it appeared like “a painting or panel made to represent or imitate the shroud”.

Nightmares are one of the most prevalent sleeping disorders in the world, the frequency of which increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, as several reports show. Now, it might be possible to tame these horrifying dreams using non-invasive techniques to manipulate our emotions, a new study shows.

A study conducted on 36 patients diagnosed with a nightmare disorder showed that a combination of two simple therapies can help reduce the frequency of these bad dreams to a large extent. The study was originally published in a Current Biology paper.

"There is a relationship between the types of emotions experienced in dreams and our emotional well-being," psychiatrist Lampros Perogamvros of the Geneva University Hospitals and the University of Geneva in Switzerland explained in 2022 when the results of the study were published.

"Based on this observation, we had the idea that we could help people by manipulating emotions in their dreams."

<h2>Taming nightmares with music and some manipulation of emotions</h2>

Many people globally suffer from nightmares, which are not just a few bad dreams. Nightmares are also associated with poor sleep quality, which then can lead to other health issues.&nbsp;

One reason for nightmares is poor sleep which can also increase anxiety, which in turn can result in insomnia. Hence, nightmares shouldn’t be ignored and must be dealt with at an early stage.

The two non-invasive methods introduced in the study were- imagery rehearsal therapy (IMT) and targeted memory reactivation (TMR).&nbsp;

In IMT, patients were asked to rewrite their most harrowing and frequent nightmares to give them a happy ending on paper and then “rehearse” that written story in their head, in an attempt to overwrite the nightmare.

This method helped to reduce the frequency and severity of nightmares, but the treatment is not effective for all patients.

To boost this method’s effectiveness, scientists introduced another method called- targeted memory reactivation (TMR). Based on a 2010 experiment, in this method, certain sounds associated with a certain stimulus are played while people are sleeping. It was observed that TMR helped in boosting the memory of that stimulus.

After having the study's participants complete a dream and sleep diary for two weeks, the volunteers were all given a single IRT session.&nbsp;

Half of the group underwent a TMR session, creating a link between a positive version of their nightmares and a sound. The other half served as a control group, imagining a less horrific version of a nightmare without being exposed to positive sounds.&nbsp;

At the start of the study, the control group had, on average, 2.58 nightmares per week, and the TMR group had an average of 2.94 weekly nightmares. By the end of the study, the control group was down to 1.02 weekly nightmares, while the TMR group had dropped to just 0.19. Even more promising, the TMR group reported an increase in happy dreams.

At the three-month follow-up, nightmares had risen slightly in both groups, to 1.48 and 0.33 per week respectively. However, that is still an impressive reduction in the frequency of nightmares, the researchers said, suggesting that using TMR to support IRT results in a more effective treatment.

The researchers from Florida Atlantic University published the new research in Pediatric Reports which showed that even though there have been growing concerns about the usage of marijuana increasing among teens after its legalisation in the US, it has actually decreased.&nbsp;

In the study, researchers analysed the trend of marijuana use among US teens from 2011 to 2021 with the use of data collected from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey of students from grades 9 to 12.

<h2>Here's what the study revealed</h2>

The study included a total sample of 88,183 US&nbsp;high school students who submitted their self-reports on their marijuana use.

In the time duration studied, the use of marijuana among teens was seen to have a significant decline.

The number of teens who had tried marijuana saw a decrease from 39.9 per cent in 2011 to 27.8 per cent in 2021 and the percentage of students who had reported marijuana use in the last 30 days fell from 23.1 per cent to 15.8 per cent.

There was also a decrease in the percentage of students who had used marijuana for the first time before the age of 13.&nbsp;

Overall the study shows that fewer teens were using marijuana.

“This finding aligns with previous research indicating that minority groups, particularly Black adolescents, may perceive lower risks associated with marijuana use, which could contribute to higher usage rates,” read the study.

An increase was noticed in the rate of marijuana use with each grade level which reached its highest rate among students of class 12.

“While we found a net decline in the percentage of marijuana use among students between 2011 and 2021 for all grade levels, there was consistently higher usage for older grades throughout all years, especially among 12th graders,” the authors stated.

The new trend which was seen in the study was girls were using marijuana more than boys by 2021. “This change is consistent with earlier reports suggesting a narrowing of the gender gap in substance use,” stated the study.&nbsp;

In the 17 years, out of around 500,000 participants, 43,400 had died which is about 8.8 per cent of the total sample size.&nbsp;

As per the data, the average age at death was 70 years and the primary cause of death was cancer, which was followed by&nbsp;nervous system,&nbsp;respiratory system and digestive system diseases.

However, those who scored higher neuroticism reportedly felt loneliness.&nbsp;

"It was surprising that loneliness had a much stronger impact than other components of neuroticism," said Antonio Terracciano, senior author and Florida State University professor of geriatrics, while speaking to PsyPost.&nbsp;

"The findings indicate that those who reported being lonely were at much higher risk of death than those who felt anxious or guilty," he further said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, individuals who had a gene for group O1 were at 12 per cent lower stroke risk.&nbsp;

Separate research was conducted by Annemiek Waajen of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to confirm whether microbes actually eat asteroid material. In this process, microbes were fed pieces of meteorite which fell on Earth.&nbsp;

In the research, which was published in the journals Astrobiology and Scientific Reports, Dr. Waajen said that the microbes consumed the rocks and then grew.

Speaking to Universe Today about why they proposed novel detection methods for PBHs through email, De-Chang and Stojkovic said, "If an&nbsp;asteroid, or a moon, or a small planet (planetoid) has a liquid core surrounded by a solid crust, then a small PBH will consume the dense liquid core relatively quickly (within weeks to months). The crust will remain intact if the material is strong enough to support gravitational stress."

"Thus, we will end up with a hollow structure. If the central&nbsp;black hole&nbsp;is ejected (due to collisions with other objects), the density will be lower than the usual density of a rocky object with a liquid core," they added.

These implants also helped the scientists study how individual neurons in the hippocampus work during wakeful activity.

The participants of the study were given a picture of Shrek, and it was noticed that a particular neuron got activated on seeing the photo.

When the participant read the book "Shrek and Courtney Love", the same neuron got activated on the appearance of the name "Shrek" and the pronoun "he" which was used to refer to the central character in the later part of the book.&nbsp;

However, when the participants read the pronoun "she", the same neuron was not activated.

"We had the participants answer a question at the end of the sentences about who performed the action,"&nbsp;stated neuroscientist&nbsp;Matthew Self, who is from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience.

"We could predict whether the patients would give the correct answer based on the activity of the individual concept cells," he further explained.&nbsp;

The volunteers were also made to read sentences in which two characters shared the same pronouns. In such cases, it was observed that the person who evoked the most activity was identified with the pronoun later.

"This could be based on chance fluctuations in activity on a trial-by-trial basis or an internal preference for one of the two characters in the sentence,"&nbsp;Self said.
