The researchers made the discovery when a pregnant neuroscientist went through two dozen brain scans during her pregnancy phase and then for the next two years postpartum.&nbsp;

Grey matter is&nbsp;one kind of tissue present in the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) which is important for humans to function normally.&nbsp;

After the pregnancy came to an end, it was observed that the woman was able to regain some grey matter. The grey matter regained included the cell bodies of neurons and the connections present between them.

Co-senior author of the study and associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Emily Jacobs said that the grey-matter volume in the affected brain areas of pregnant women decreased by 4 per cent on average.&nbsp;

During puberty, there is a hormone surge which comes with a decrease in grey matter volume as the excess tissue in the brain is pruned so that it can function more efficiently.&nbsp;

Jacobs stated that something similar may have been occurring in pregnancy.&nbsp;

This network is known as the frontostriatal salience network and although, how this region of the brain functions has not been fully understood, it has been earlier linked to filtering of external stimuli and reward processing in the brain.

The research was carried out by a team from Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City and the researchers believe that this discovery will help in creating future treatments for dementia, especially one which is specifically targeted to the brain network.

The analysis of the dinosaur tracks which were discovered in the Wonthaggi Formation, south of Melbourne, was recently published by the experts.&nbsp;

“The hip height of that theropod would have been about the same as the full height of a tall, modern-day human – or a bit more than six feet tall,” said Martin.

“Our find of so many theropod tracks, however, confirms that a variety of dinosaurs actually lived and walked on the ground where their bones were found,” emphasised Martin. “Dinosaur tracks are actually much more common at the site than we previously realised," he added.&nbsp;

“But that's not as important as creating an environment of discipline in learning. That leadership by example is the responsibility of the parents,” said Murthy.

“If the parents are going and seeing movies and then telling ‘children, no, no, you study’ (that won’t work),” he added.

A new study conducted in Denmark has linked infertility to different types of pollution among men and women. While air pollution is associated with increased infertility risk in men, noise pollution leads to a higher risk of infertility in women.&nbsp;

The study, published in the BMJ,&nbsp;drew from a&nbsp;database of 526,056 men and 377,850 women aged 30 to 45 who had less than two children, were cohabiting or married&nbsp;and had lived in the Nordic country between 2000 and 2017. The study did not include sterilised men and women who had undergone surgery to prevent pregnancy.&nbsp;

The study stated that men exposed to air pollution over an average of five years had a higher risk of infertility, which further adds to evidence about the impact of fine particulate matter on human health.&nbsp;

“Based on a nationwide cohort, designed to include a high proportion of people actively trying to achieve pregnancy, we found that PM2.5 was associated with a higher risk of an infertility diagnosis among men,"&nbsp;the study noted.&nbsp;

As for infertility among women aged 35 to 45, noise pollution was the leading cause of infertility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Road traffic noise was associated with a higher risk of an infertility diagnosis among women older than 35 years, and possibly among men older than 37 years," the study added.&nbsp;

During the 18-year period, infertility was diagnosed in&nbsp;16,172 men and 22,672 women. Exposure to levels of PM2.5 that were 2.9 micrograms per cubic metre higher than average over five years was associated with a 24 per cent&nbsp;increased risk of infertility.&nbsp;

“As many western countries are facing declining birthrates and increasing maternal age at the birth of a first child, knowledge on environmental pollutants affecting fertility is crucial," the study stated.&nbsp;

"If our results are confirmed in future studies, it suggests that political implementation of air pollution and noise mitigations may be important tools for improving birthrates in the western world.”

The review looked at cancers of the brain in adults and children, as well as cancer of the pituitary gland, salivary glands and leukaemias, and risks linked to mobile phone use, base stations, or transmitters, as well as occupational exposure.

One European, who survived between 6,000 to 10,000 years ago, is ancestor of all blue-eyed people: Study

In the Cretaceous period, the most advanced herbivorous dinosaurs, known as hadrosaurs, were known to have formidable teeth.&nbsp;

In a new study, it has been revealed that these dinosaurs had developed thousands of teeth because of their voracious appetite for plants.

The researchers looked into the evolutionary trajectory of the ornithopods, which was a group of dinosaurs that encompassed Iguanodon, Hypsilophodon, rare rhabdodontids and the hadrosaurs.

At the end of the Cretaceous period, these herbivorous dinosaurs were reigning across vast&nbsp;swathes of the planet.

In the research, headed by Dr. Attila Ősi from&nbsp;Eötvös Loránd University&nbsp;in Hungary, it was highlighted that the teeth and jaws of ornithopods went through drastic changes during their evolution.

The Iguanodon, which was an early member of the ornithopods, needed more than 200 days to form their teeth and it took the same amount of time for the teeth to wear out because of chewing.&nbsp;

In the later part of the Cretaceous, the hadrosaurs were seen gnawing through their teeth in just 50 days.

As per the researchers, the ornithopods indulged in binge-eating of tough plants because of which their teeth eroded rapidly.&nbsp;

The dinosaurs had to deploy reinforcements and create reserves of teeth in their skulls which prevented them from going hungry.

“Across a herbivore’s life, its teeth gradually wear down,” said study co-author Professor Paul Barrett.&nbsp;

Because of the constant wear and tear, the tooth eventually vanished in some of the dinosaurs.&nbsp;

The reptiles, however, solved this dental dilemma by producing new teeth continuously. Because of this dinosaur teeth have today become the holy grail for researchers who wish to understand early animal evolution.

“At the start, they had single rows of fairly simple teeth with limited wear, probably because these dinosaurs focused on fruits and softer plants,” Professor Paul said.

According to a study published in The Lancet Global Health journal, people in India are not consuming a proper nutritional diet which is said to be&nbsp;resulting in micronutrient deficiencies.

Micronutrients, which include vitamins and minerals, play a significant role in maintaining proper bodily functions. They&nbsp;are essential in smaller amounts&nbsp;like fats and carbohydrates&nbsp;are vital components for good health.

The&nbsp;study, conducted by Harvard University,&nbsp;shows the insufficient consumption of 15 micronutrients&nbsp;taken through a regular diet without any additional supplements,&nbsp;among 185 countries.&nbsp;

Across the world, there are over five billion people whose&nbsp;diets&nbsp;do not include iodine, vitamin E, and calcium, according to the researchers.

In India, women intake less iodine compared to men, as per the study. It also noted that males consume less zinc and magnesium in comparison to women.

The changes in gravity happen because of variations in the distance between the Earth and the moon and are known to cause ocean tides, however, the friction between the surface of the Earth and the tides also leads to a slight deceleration in its rotation.&nbsp;

As per the study, the rotation of the Earth has decelerated because of this phenomenon in the past.

After analysing for two years, the team, headed by Ma Chao from the Institute of Sedimentary Geology at Chengdu University of Technology, concluded that there was an increase of 20,000 km&nbsp;between Earth and the moon between 700 million and 200 million years ago, because of which the length of the day increased by around 2.2 hours.

“Specifically, there are two intervals with pronounced Earth rotation deceleration: between 650 and 500 million years ago (Mya), and between 350 and 280 Mya, separated by a period of stalled deceleration from 500 to 350 Mya,” wrote the team&nbsp;in a paper which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The deep seafloor - 12,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean - is covered by ancient rocks known as the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ).

Although these rocks appear devoid of life, they may actually be hiding different kinds of tiny sea creatures and microbes, some of which may have adapted to survive in the dark.

The deep-sea rocks, which are called as polymetallic nodules, turn into a habitat for various marine organisms and also generate oxygen across the ocean floor.

A team of scientists, which includes experts from&nbsp;Boston University, made this discovery which challenged the idea that sunlight is required for the production of oxygen and generally occurs near the surface of the ocean where photosynthesis of the phytoplankton occurs.

When the oxygen was detected at such depth amid darkness, initially the researchers felt that it was an error.

“This was really weird, because no one had ever seen it before,” said Jeffrey Marlow, who is the co-author of the study and an assistant professor of biology at Boston University’s College of Arts &amp; Sciences.

<h2>Scientists decode the production of dark oxygen</h2>

Marlow, who has an understanding of microbes present in extreme environments like deep-sea hydrothermal vents and hardened lava, initially believed that microbial activity is responsible for the production of oxygen.

For investigating the dark oxygen, deep-sea chambers which can land on the seafloors and encapsulate sediment, polymetallic nodules, living organisms and seawater were used by the researchers.&nbsp;

For 48 hours, the oxygen levels in these chambers were measured by the team. Generally, if oxygen is consumed by the organisms, the levels will drop on the basis of the amount of activity carried out in the chamber. However, it was noted that in this case there was a rise in the oxygen levels.

“We did a lot of troubleshooting and found that the oxygen levels increased many more times following that initial measurement,” said Marlow, adding, “So we’re now convinced it’s a real signal.”

The research was conducted by Marlow and his colleagues aboard a vessel which was dedicated to exploring the ecology of the CCZ.&nbsp;

The team, which was headed by Andrew Sweetman from the&nbsp;Scottish Association for Marine Science, after conducting different experiments, reached the conclusion that microbial activity was not driving the production of the oxygen primarily even though a lot of microbes were present on and inside the rocks.

Generally, if oxygen is consumed by the organisms, the levels will drop on the basis of the amount of activity carried out in the chamber. However, it was noted that in this case there was a rise in the oxygen levels.
