According to the RCN, NHS nurses' salary has decreased by up to 20 per cent&nbsp;in real terms over the past decade, making it difficult for members to support their families and pay their bills.&nbsp;The union is requesting a wage increase of 5 per cent&nbsp;over inflation.&nbsp;

In September, NHS executives said that nurses were skipping meals in order to clothe and feed their kids and were finding it difficult to pay for growing transportation costs.

The strike action poses a serious threat to the health system, which is already under pressure from ongoing government underinvestment, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a critical staffing shortage.

Borne said the general discount on fuel prices at service stations that it introduced in response to the surge in global oil prices would be extended to mid-November.

The discount of 30 cents per litre was previously due to be reduced to 10 cents on Nov. 1.

France: Refinery strike has hit petrol supplies further, says PM

French government said on Wednesday that the country has tapped strategic fuel reserves to resupply petrol stations that have run out of fuel. The decision has been taken due to strikes by workers at refineries and depots. This has stunted production and blocked deliveries.&nbsp;

Government spokesman Olivier Veran acknowledged "tensions" but said there was no shortage of fuel stocks on a national level. He urged consumers not to panic-buy.

Authorities in the hardest hit Hauts-de-France region have banned sale of &nbsp;petrol and diesel in jerry cans and other portable containers.

"We are obviously monitoring very, very closely the situation together with the operators and, here and there, when it was necessary, we have used our strategic stocks to enable the stations to be supplied," Veran told reporters.

A walkout by hard-left CGT trade union members at TotalEnergies has disrupted operations at two refineries and two storage facilities, while two Exxon Mobil refineries have faced similar problems since Sept. 20.

This has left more than 60 per cent of France's refining capacity offline.

Veran said roughly one in every 10 service stations nationally were experiencing some shortages, but that in the north the figure was closer to one in every three.

The UFIP petroleum industry body said the shortages at fuel pumps were due to logistics and not insufficient supplies.

"There are no shortages in supply due to the strikes," a UFIP spokesperson said.

Hundreds of students blocked the main airport road in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos on Monday to protest against the disruption to classes caused by a lecturers' strike that has been going on for more than seven months.

Strikes over pay by public university lecturers are common in Nigeria and often go on for months. The latest action started in February.

Chanting and holding placards, students gathered on Lagos International Airport Road, causing gridlock in a city that already struggles with daily traffic congestion and leaving motorists and air passengers stranded.

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) had at the weekend threatened to occupy major airports to send a message that the students were tired of the pay stand-off between lecturers and President Muhammadu Buhari's government.

"We are here to ground the economy at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport so that the government, the first class people, can be aware that our students are off campus now (for) seven months," Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, NANS spokesperson for the southwest region told Reuters.

Passengers were forced to walk with their luggage in the rain for at least five kilometres to and from the airport. Dozens of armed police watched from a distance.

Demonstrations often turn deadly in Nigeria. The last major protest was against police brutality two years ago, which ended with some protesters being shot and killed.

The SNCTA ( Syndicat majoritaire des contrôleurs aériens) union, the largest among controller unions, called for the strike, which the DGAC ( Direction générale de l'Aviation civile) authority said is expected to result in significant delays in mainland France and might affect flights to other parts of Europe.&nbsp;

It claimed to be in talks with the manager of aviation traffic at Eurocontrol to suggest alternate routes for planes to use in order to avoid French airspace.

For its side, the SNCTA claimed that the strike was a reaction to high inflation, which is reducing its members' purchasing power, and concerns over "future recruitments."&nbsp;

AFP quoted North Memorial Hospital in Minnesota which said it "may be making some adjustments to non-emergency care and services to ensure adequate and safe staffing during the strike period." &nbsp;

Cancellation of flights is sure to create disturbance in summer air travel across Europe. Travel volume has increased in Europe due to relaxation of Covid rules.

The Verdi union, representing around 20,000 Lufthansa ground staff, is seeking a 9.5-percent pay rise, or at least 350 euros ($360) per month. It also wants a minimum hourly wage of 13 euros.

The union has said management's offer so far "does not come close to compensating for inflation" which stood at 7.6 percent in Germany last month.

"If the existing CEB act does not need amendments and has the capability to implement renewable energy projects without delay, why did the CEB deprive many who had requested to do so for years?," Wijesekera said in a tweet.

Sri&nbsp;Lanka's 22 million people are already suffering the country's most serious financial turmoil in seven decades, with severe shortages of fuel, medicines and other essentials amid record inflation and a devaluation of its currency.

In a bid to stop the CEB Engineers' Union from striking,&nbsp;Sri&nbsp;Lanka's President Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued a gazette notification late on Wednesday declaring electricity supply as an essential service.

The legal directive makes it mandatory for engineers to report to work.

"President Rajapaksa called the union president late last night and made an appeal not to let the entire grid collapse. So we are working to ensure hospitals and other essential services have&nbsp;power," the union's joint secretary Eranga Kudahewa told Reuters.

"But the strike will continue," he said.

Two years after the pandemic devastated the aviation industry, prompting heavy layoffs, travel is rebounding in Europe as countries have lifted restrictions.
