Is there life beyond Earth? It is one of the most profound questions of all time. The hunt for an answer is going on for decades. A study now suggests the possibility of life existing on planets orbiting the stars of the Milky Way galaxy. One-third of the planets orbiting the most common stars across the galaxy may harbour life.

One-third of Milky Way Planets may hold conditions to support life: Study

Scientists have warned that the ability of humans to see the cosmos in the night sky may vanish in just 20 years because of light pollution.

“The night sky is part of our environment and it would be a major deprivation if the next generation never got to see it, just as it would be if they never saw a bird’s nest,” said Martin Rees, the British astronomer royal, while speaking to The Guardian.

“You don’t need to be an astronomer to care about this. I am not an ornithologist but if there were no songbirds in my garden, I’d feel impoverished,” he added.

In the last few years, the issue of light pollution has rapidly worsened, especially since 2016 when it was reported by astronomers that the Milky Way is no longer visible to almost a third of the population, as per Rees.

Scientists stated that the increasing light pollution is now brightening up the night sky at a rate of around 10 per cent per year.

No cosmos for future generations

A child who is born in a place where 250 stars are currently visible in the night sky would be able to see only 100 by the time they reach the age of 18, stated Christopher Kyba, of the German Centre for Geosciences.

“A couple of generations ago, people would have been confronted regularly with this glittering vision of the cosmos – but what was formerly universal is now extremely rare. Only the world’s richest people, and some of the poorest, experience that anymore. For everybody else, it’s more or less gone,” Kyba added.

He further argued that the introduction of some changes to lighting can make a considerable improvement. These steps would include shielding outdoor lights and pointing them downwards, limiting the brightness of lights, and ensuring that they are not predominantly blue-white but have red and orange components. “Measures like that would have an enormous impact,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Prof Robert Fosbury, of the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London (UCL) claimed that bluish emissions of LEDs entirely lack any red or near-infrared light. “We are becoming starved of red and infra-red light and that has serious implications,” he stated.

“When reddish light shines on our bodies, it stimulates mechanisms including those that break down high levels of sugar in the blood or boost melatonin production. Since the introduction of fluorescent lighting and later LEDs, that part of the spectrum has been removed from artificial light and I think it is playing a part in the waves of obesity and the rise in diabetes cases we see today,” Fosbury added.

Stars to become invisible to our eyes in two decades due to light pollution, warn scientists

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has been up and running for a while now. It is bringing us pics from all corners of the universe. The humanity's eye in the sky has now sent us images of 'sand' clouds in the atmosphere of a faraway planet that revolves not one but two stars.

A team of researchers led by Brittany Miles of the University of Arizona detected these clouds, said NASA. The team, using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), detected the 'silicate cloud features' in the atmosphere of the planet which has been catalogued as VHS 1256 b. The clouds are constantly moving, rising and mixing in the atmosphere. Hotter material is pushed up while the colder is pushed down.

In addition to the 'sand clouds' the team of researchers has also found presence of water, methane, and carbon monoxide.

VHS 1256 b is 40 lightyears away and revolves around two stars over 10,000 years.

“VHS 1256 b is about four times farther from its stars than Pluto is from our Sun, which makes it a great target for Webb,” said Miles “That means the planet’s light is not mixed with light from its stars.” Higher up in its atmosphere, where the silicate clouds are churning, temperatures reach a scorching 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit (830 degrees Celsius).

Miles was quoted by NASA.

"The finer silicate grains in its atmosphere may be more like tiny particles in smoke,” said noted co-author Beth Biller of the University of Edinburgh, as quoted by NASA “The larger grains might be more like very hot, very small sand particles.”

Stars may appear to twinkle forever but like us, they have a finite lifespan. Stars of certain size put on quite a show before biting the dust. They bid adieu in a massive blast known as a supernova. These are some of the most violent and energetic events in space. Humanity has recorded such supernovas from even pre-historic periods.

But now, thanks to our superior tech and 'eyes in the sky,' we are able to click those that are not visible from Earth. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has clicked some such supernovas. NASA has posted these photos on Twitter.

NASA treats us with beautiful pictures of exploding stars

A new research has revealed that our home galaxy, the Milky Way, might be forming stars at a much higher rate than previous estimates. The study conducted by the scientists at the University of Würzburg in Germany has surprised the scientific community.

A new research has revealed that our home galaxy, the Milky Way, might be forming stars at a much higher rate than previous estimates. The study conducted by the scientists at the University of Würzburg in Germany has surprised the scientific community. The research published in the journal 'Astronomy & Astrophysics' found that stars are forming at a rate four to eight times the mass of the Sun per year — which is two to four times more than current estimates given by astrophysicists. The number becomes even bigger if we count the stars that are not as massive as Sun. Meaning, the Milky way is far more chaotic with 10 to 20 infant stars forming in our neighbourhood annually. Understanding star formation rate is akin to taking the pulse of the galaxy. Scientists have concluded that the more stars a galaxy churns out, the faster it enriches itself with oxygen, iron, and other important elements that stars create. "The star formation rate is very important to understand for galaxy evolution," said astrophysicist Thomas Siegert, associated with the study. WATCH | The Big Space: James Webb Telescope makes shocking discovery, shows extreme promise early on × How star rate formation is calculated? Astronomers find the rate of star formation by estimating the amount of gamma radiation produced following the decay of aluminum-26. This isotope is formed during the birth and death of a star and has a half-life of about 700,000. It has a cyclical effect as the birth and death of stars spews heavier elements into interstellar space. The interstellar dust caused by supernova explosions and the formation of new stars pumps our galaxy with the required elements to repeat the process all over again. Read more: NASA astronaut clicks 'unreal' photo of auroras from space The researchers, however, added the caveat that current models may not present an accurate picture as it is difficult to determine the source's distance. It is perhaps the reason the scientists could only give a range for the star formation rate and not the exact numbers. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Chaos in Milky Way? Stars forming at greater pace than previously thought, study shows

According to a paper published in the Science Journal, the impact of light pollution had some alarming observations with each passing year. Scientists spotted fewer stars with their naked eyes as artificial lightning overpowered everything, making the dim stars barely visible. Watch this report to know more.

A rare glowing comet is making a trip back to planet earth after a long gap of about 50,000 years. For all the stargazers, you can catch the glimpse of the glowing comet as it will be closest Wednesday and Thursday next week. How close will the comet be to Earth? Well, the exotic comet will shoot past the planet at a mere distance of 2.5 light minutes which is just 27m miles.

The green comet was calculated to orbit the sun every 50,000 years which means the last time the comet tore past our planet was in the time of the Neanderthals. The comet comes from the Oort cloud and gets its beautiful green glow from diatomic carbon (pairs of carbon atoms that are bound together) that is present in the comet's head. When the ultraviolet rays of solar radiation fall on the comet, these molecules emit green light.

The comet was visible last month as well however the glow was not much due to the large distance from our home planet. Astronomers captured pictures which showed the head of the comet's body, its long more tenuous ion and a dust tail. However, as it is set to approach the earth, the comet will be glowing more and can be seen from the naked eye.

Comet C/2022 E3 is visible in the northern hemisphere and as the sky gets darkens in the evening, it can be seen below and left to the Plough constellation handle. Next week, the comet is heading for a fly-by of the pole star which is the brightest star in Ursa Minor.

Stargazers Alert ! Rare exotic green comet to shoot past earth after 50,000 years

Have you ever noticed the number of stars that you can see with your naked eyes in the sky has reduced significantly over the last decade? New research shows that it’s actually due to the increasing light pollution worldwide. Light pollution is a phenomenon where the sky glows at night due to artificial lighting. BBC reported that a group of amateur astronomers and citizen scientists spent the last 12 years studying the sky to reach this conclusion. The amount of light that humans emit in the sky has constantly increased by 10% every year, as per the researchers. Dr Christopher Kyba, a scientist from the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, was quoted by the BBC as saying, "Our view of the stars is disappearing".

The European Space Agency in a study last year revealed that the LED lighting revolution throughout the world exacerbated the light pollution problem. The cheaper and better the lightning, the more it is wasted. Decorative lights, advertisement boards, street lights and lights on high-rise buildings have made our sky brighter and the light problem worse.

This year George Ezra, Harry Styles, Stormzy, Central Cee and Fred Again are all up for Artist of the Year. The BRIT Awards stated in 2021 that they will do away with their male and female categories in an effort to honour musicians solely for their music however in a shocking turn of events, female artists were shut out of the Artist Of The Year last year. Milky Way Galaxy is huge. So huge that even if we travel at the speed of light (300,000 kilometres per second) it would take us 100,000 years to go from one end to the other. But the visible portion of our spiral galaxy, glowing with stars is not the only part in its structure.

A little away from the star-rich centre and even spiral arms of the galaxy, it is enclosed in what is called galactic stellar halo which is much bigger than the galaxy and another 100,000 light-years across. The study of the galactic halo is difficult because it hardly has any stars and is also made up of dark matter.

(Image: NASA)

Scientists were studying something else and accidentally stumbled upon some stars located in the halo. Discovery of these stars is sure to help us study the vast space sparsely illuminated by stars

The stars that have been discovered are RR Lyrae variables. They orbit our galaxy through the galactic halo and are 1 million light-years away from the centre of the galaxy.

These stars are interesting to study. But what scientists have found handy is that their use as 'space candles' to determine distances and to find out more stars, if any, in the lonesome stellar halo part outside our galaxy.

"This study is redefining what constitutes the outer limits of our galaxy," said Astronomer Raja GuhaThakurta of the University of California Santa Cruz

"[It] and Andromeda are both so big, there's hardly any space between the two galaxies."

The Geminid meteor shower is caused by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This is in contrast to most meteor showers, which are triggered by comets rather than asteroids. Simon Green and John Davies identified 3200 Phaethon on photos taken by the IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite) on October 11, 1983. In 1985, it was awarded the asteroid designation 3200 Phaethon after being given the naming 1983 TB. Fred Whipple stated that this asteroid had the same orbit as the Geminid meteor shower. This was extremely unique, as an asteroid has never previously been proposed as the cause of a meteor shower. It's still unclear how debris from the asteroid's surface or interior ends up in the meteoroid stream.

Why in mid-December?

3200 Phaethon first comes near the sun. The distance is half the distance between the sun and the innermost planet, Mercury. Then it zooms out past Mars' orbit. On its inbound leg, the meteor material contacts the earth's orbit, and the earth arrives at this spot every mid-December, hence the Geminid meteor shower.

The Moon connection

This year a declining gibbous moon will be visible above the horizon during optimal viewing hours. On the evenings of December 13 and 14, one alternative is to watch by moonlight. Also, because the moon rises soon before midnight on both December 13 and 14, keep an eye out in the evening before the moon rises. Geminid meteors are bright, white, and fast. The brightest ones will outshine the moonlight. The final quarter moon of 2022 occurs on December 16. So, in 2022, a dazzling waning gibbous moon will rise in the midst of the Geminids' peak.

When to watch?

Gemini will be visible by mid-evening in December. On the evenings of December 13 and 14, the moon rises later, soon before midnight. In addition, the moon rises later on December 14, giving you additional opportunity to observe meteors. It's worth a shot on December 14th evening!

Peak time: The Geminids can be observed from a dark-sky position about 2 a.m. local time (for all time zones).

Shower Duration

The Geminid meteor shower occurs between November 19 and December 24. When the radiant is at its peak, it is possible to see 120 Geminid meteors every hour under a dark sky with no moon. The vivid, white, and dazzling Geminids provide one of the greatest showers in the Northern Hemisphere. The Geminids may also be seen from the Southern Hemisphere, but at a reduced pace.

Hubble Space Telescope’s new image shows a spiral galaxy’s sparkling stars

Sun is hot, really hot. The surface of the sun is burning at more than 5000 degrees Celsius. At the core, it is even hotter. But group of Indian astronomers have now found stars that are hotter than the Sun.

These stars, eight in all, belong to a rare class called 'MRPs' or Main-sequence Radio Pulse emitters. The Pune-based astronomers have discovered the stars by using Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) located near Pune.

The group of scientists, led by astronomers from the Pune-based National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), discovered the rare class of radio stars that are hotter than the Sun with unusually strong magnetic fields and much stronger stellar wind, it said. In a press release, the NCRA said the team had also discovered three more such stars in the past using the GMRT. Thus, of the total 15 MRPs known so far, 11 were discovered with the GMRT, of which eight were discovered in 2021 alone, thanks to the wide bandwidth and high sensitivity of the upgraded GMRT, the release said. "These discoveries are the fruits of an ongoing survey with the GMRT, which was launched specifically for the purpose of solving the mystery of MRPs," it said.

The success of the GMRT programme has revolutionised the notion about this class of stars, and has opened up a new window to study their exotic magnetospheres, the NCRA said.

The MRPs are stars hotter than the Sun with unusually strong magnetic fields, and much stronger stellar wind. Due to this, they emit bright radio pulses like a lighthouse, the research outfit said. Though the first MRP was discovered in 2000, it was only due to the high sensitivity of the upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) that the number of such stars known have increased multiple times in recent years, with 11 of the 15 discovered using the high-tech telescope, the NCRA said.

Also Read | NASA says International Space Station is still at risk from debris of Russian weapons test

The success of the survey with the uGMRT suggest that the current notion that MRPs are rare objects may not be correct. Rather, they are probably more common, but are difficult to detect, it said. This is due to the fact that the radio pulses are visible only at certain times, and the phenomenon is mostly observable at low radio frequencies, the release said.

"This is the frequency range where the uGMRT stands out as the most sensitive telescope in the world. The high sensitivity of the uGMRT and its ability to make high resolution images were instrumental in enabling the recovery of the pulsed signal from the different types of radiation coming from the sky.

"This, combined with a strategic observation campaign, allowed the astronomers to overcome the difficulties, and reveal the true nature of these objects," the release said.

Also Read | NASA shares Perseverance rover's breathtaking recording of Ingenuity flight on Mars The success of the GMRT programme has revolutionised the notion about this class of stars, and has opened up a new window to study their exotic magnetospheres, the NCRA said. Also Read | NASA says International Space Station is still at risk from debris of Russian weapons test The success of the survey with the uGMRT suggest that the current notion that MRPs are rare objects may not be correct. Searching for extra-terrestrial life has been preoccupation of scientists and creative folks. The idea of us not being alone in this universe on this rock we call Earth is somewhat assuring. Maybe it gives a purpose to our search in the vast expanse of space that so far not yielded any definitive clue of intelligent alien life.

Scientists have now found stars that are unexpectedly blasting out radio signals. This has indicated presence of hidden planets.

University of Queensland’s Dr Benjamin Pope and colleagues at the Dutch national observatory ASTRON have been searching for planets using Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), world's most powerful radio telescope located in the Netherlands.

Dr Pope has been quoted as saying that the team of researchers has discovered radio signals from 19 red dwarf stars. It is suspected that four of these stars have planets orbitting them.

Planets in our solar system also emit radio waves but such radio waves from planets outside the solar system had yet to be found.

Red dwarf stars are much smaller than the Sun. They have intense magnetic activity and radio emissions.

More research is needed to determine to the most accurate degree what is the cause of these radio emissions. What if aliens are sending us messages? That would be interesting indeed.

Do you know how many stars may have 'seen' life on earth? Scientists have the answer

Supernovas are highly violent cosmic events that mark the end of a star’s life cycle. Now, astronomers have solved the mystery behind an elusive kind of supernova, which may be able to explain the birth of hypnotising “Crab Nebula”.

The supernova in question may have illuminated the night sky on Earth about 1,000 years ago, a new study claims.

What are supernovas?

When a star dies, they run out of fuel and collapse onto themselves, causing a large and violent explosion capable of changing the anatomy of any celestial system. These explosions are extremely bright and are capable of being seen from halfway across the universe.

Till now, scientists knew about two kinds of supernovas. One usually takes place in large stars that are over 10 times the mas of our sun. Their collapse begins in the core, when their fuel burns out. This leads to the destruction of its outer layers, leaving behind a neutron star or a black hole.

The other kind of supernova takes place in stars that are less than eight times the mass of sun which burn out over time and leave behind an ashy body called a white dwarf. These dwarves can pull fuel from other stars towards themselves, which triggers an explosion.

How was Crab Nebula formed?

Stars between the 8-10 solar masses would theoretically explode in a different manner, in a process called “electron-capture” which causes electrons to fuse with atomic nuclei. In usual circumstances, these repel each other. This triggers an explosion around the star’s surrounding layers and leaves behind a neutron star, around the size of our sun.

A supernova in 1054 AD, as recorded in Chinese and Japanese documents details a bright light which was seen during the daytime on Earth for at least 23 days, and for two years in the nighttime. What remained was the Crab Nebula, and “electron-capture” may be attributed to it.

Scientists solve mystery behind elusive supernova which birthed Crab Nebula

Astronomers successfully observed and captured a supernova blast in space over 14 years. Now, it has given them fascinating insights into the supernovas that mark the end of a star’s life-cycle.

With images from over a decade, astronomers observed the supernova in space as it exploded with speeds of up to 4,000 kilometres per second (2,485 miles).

What is a supernova? How far is this one from Earth?

They observed the remains of a supernova called “MSH 15-52”, situated 17,000 light-years away from Earth. It is one of the youngest known legacies of a supernova within the Milky Way and flung its remains into a gas of cloud called “RCW 89”.

Approximately 1,700 years ago, the star began to die after running out of fuel. The death of stars in space is markedly violent, as they explode the outer material to collapse unto themselves.

Supernovas are essentially large-scale explosions that take place once the star runs out of energy and collapses into itself. For this reason, they are considered the largest explosions in space.

Once the star collapsed, it became a dead star called a “pulsar”, with densely packed neutrons and high speed rotations. Its rotational movement played an important role in the X-ray which shows the explosion in action. In a new study, scientists used images from 2004, 2008, and 2017-18 to note and understand the changes in the gas cloud “RCW 89”, which the supernova seems to be expanding.

How did the scientists study the supernova?

Scientists calculated the distance travelled by the dead star’s remnants to understand its reach. The scientist were literally guided by a “hand” to the explosion, the fingertip of which shows the MSH 15-52 meeting RCW 89. This meeting was rather fierce, causing movement at speeds of 4,000-5,000 kilometres per second.

According to ScienceAlert, the many knots visible in the graphic are cosmic entities made of magnesium and neon that formed in the star before the explosion. The slowest speed touched by the remnants is reportedly 1,000 kilometres per second!

But as the interaction between RCW 89 and MSH 15-52 slows down, so do these features, spanning a distance of 75-light years between the dead star and RCW 89, the gaseous cloud.

The material moving rapidly in the aftermath of the explosion passed a low-density bubble surrounding the dead star before merging into RCW 89, the study published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters claims. The findings prove that the understanding scientists have of any star’s death is true, that the collapse of the life-providing core triggers a supernova.
