<p>“You might have seen in the T20Is…Rinku and Surya contributed with the ball. So, an opportunity was given to Shubman here. It’s going to be an all-rounder’s game in the coming days. So, if one or two (batsmen) from the top order can bowl it will definitely help the team, of course, depending on pitch conditions and situations.</p>

<p>“Also, it will be a surprise element to the opposition, if a batter can bowl. So, moving ahead, there will be ample opportunities for batters to bowl,” the interim bowling coach continued.</p>

<p>At a time when the Indian bowlers reduced Sri Lanka to 160 for six on a tougher batting wicket, they looked like wrapping their innings inside 200; however, a handy stand between Dunith Wellalage and Hasaranga saw the hosts cross 200 and put a fighting total on the board.</p>

<p>A match-winner in the middle order and more than a tidy keeper, with his exploits in the 2023 World Cup and away South Africa ODIs enough for evidence, KL is ahead in the pecking order to keep wickets in the SL One-Dayers.</p>

<p>In that scenario, Pant sits out, and Shreyas Iyer makes his much-awaited return to the Indian Team since his fallout with BCCI late last year. <p>"I don't know how to react because this message means so much to me," Gambhir said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The reason is not because it comes from the person who I have succeeded but from a person who I have always looked up to when I was playing.</p>

<p>"I have always felt that and I said it in a lot of my interviews - I think the most selfless cricketer I have actually ever played with. Rahul bhai has done anything and everything Indian cricket needed.</p>

Gautam Gambhir reacts to Rahul Dravid’s 'powerful message' that makes him smile ahead of India coaching debut

<p>Ace batter Suryakumar Yadav is ready for his T20I captaincy debut against Sri Lanka, but more than that, he’s happy to have his ‘old mate’ Gautam Gambhir in the dressing room as the new India head coach. Suryakumar and Gautam have been bonding since SKY’s early days in Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL when GG was the captain. With both ready to begin their new stints, Suryakumar said he is&nbsp;looking forward to working with Gambhir.</p>

<p>Ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Saturday (July 26), Suryakumar spoke publicly&nbsp;for the first time since his unexpected appointment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking exclusively to BCCI.tv, SKY said he’s learned a lot about leadership by playing under various captains and cannot wait to get on the field and make the most of his chance.</p>

<p>“I have always enjoyed being a leader on the field even though I was not the captain. I have always learnt a lot of things from different captains. It’s a good feeling and a great responsibility,” the swashbuckling batter&nbsp;said.&nbsp;</p>

He added that both of them know about each other’s working styles, eventually helping SKY to become the captain his coach and the selectors have picked him for.</p>

<p>“This relationship is special because, in 2014, I played under him in KKR. It was special because from there only I got opportunities. The relationship is still strong.</p>

<p>“He (Gambhir) knows how I work, and what is my mindset when I come to practice sessions. I also know how he tries to work as a coach. It’s all about the lovely relationship we have, and very excited to see how it goes forward,” Suryakumar continued.</p>

<h2>Staying grounded is the key</h2>

<p>Suryakumar Yadav has played cricket long enough to know how important it is to remain grounded and continue working for betterment, speaking on the same lines as he gears up for a new challenge.</p>

<p>“I think the most important thing that I have learned from this sport is how humble you are after achieving or even after not doing well. I have learned when you do something on the ground, you have to leave it on the ground,” he said.</p>

<p>“This is not your life, this is just a part of your life. So you can’t be when you are doing well, you stay on the top, and when you are not doing well, you are underground.</p>

<p>“That’s one thing which you shouldn’t do ever as a sportsman, that’s one thing which I have learned, and that’s what helps me create balance in my life. If you are a good person, everything happens good,” SKY concluded.</p>

It was special because from there only I got opportunities. The relationship is still strong. “He (Gambhir) knows how I work, and what is my mindset when I come to practice sessions. I also know how he tries to work as a coach. It’s all about the lovely relationship we have, and very excited to see how it goes forward,” Suryakumar continued. Staying grounded is the key Suryakumar Yadav has played cricket long enough to know how important it is to remain grounded and continue working for betterment, speaking on the same lines as he gears up for a new challenge. “I think the most important thing that I have learned from this sport is how humble you are after achieving or even after not doing well. I have learned when you do something on the ground, you have to leave it on the ground,” he said. “This is not your life, this is just a part of your life. So you can’t be when you are doing well, you stay on the top, and when you are not doing well, you are underground. “That’s one thing which you shouldn’t do ever as a sportsman, that’s one thing which I have learned, and that’s what helps me create balance in my life. If you are a good person, everything happens good,” SKY concluded. <p>Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach is refreshing for Indian cricket, feels former coach and veteran Ravi Shastri. Replacing Rahul Dravid for the top position, Gambhir, whom Shastri calls a no-nonsense guy, will have plenty riding on his shoulders; however, with the mature team at the helm and having worked or played with most players, the ‘young’ coach Gambhir can make the most of this chance, Shastri believes.</p>

<p>Shastri backed Gautam to bring fresh ideas and instil confidence into the side as the busy international calendar looms. With the away Sri Lanka tour being Gambhir’s first assignment as India's head coach, the former two-time World Cup winner will lead the team in the home season, beginning with the Bangladesh series in early September.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although Gautam hasn’t coached any domestic or international team before, he guided his former IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, to their third title this season as a mentor.</p>

<p>“He's contemporary; he just had a great season in the IPL,” Shastri said of Gambhir on the ICC Review.&nbsp;“I think he's the right age where he's young, he'll come with fresh ideas. He knows most of the players, especially in the white-ball format, having been part of teams in the IPL. So I think it's refreshing.</p>

<p>“And we know with Gautam, he's a no-nonsense guy. He'll have his ideas as well. And the good thing for him is he's got a mature team. He's got a settled team, a mature team. I think even though you might think you're mature, you might benefit from some fresh ideas. So I think it'll be interesting times,” Shastri continued.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>‘Player management becomes a key for coach’</h2>

<p>Having been in Gautam’s shoes before, Shastri knows and understands what a head coach brings to the table.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ravi said it would be interesting to see how he manages his players and different squads with all the tools available.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach," Shastri said.</p>

<p>"So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job, and he's got the experience," he further said.</p>

<p>"What their strengths are, what kind of human beings they are, and what kind of temperaments do they have. What are their personalities? A lot goes behind the scenes to understand a human being.</p>

<p>"I think that will be his most important task, which I think, again should not be a problem because he's contemporary. He's seen these guys from the outside, he's dealt with a lot of guys who might have played with KKR as well and for Lucknow [Super Giants] when he was there.</p>

<p>"And he's been around the circuit, the moment he finished cricket - and that was not too long ago - and he still is around, plays a lot of the legends cricket as well,” Shastri added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Team India's tour of Sri Lanka begins with the first of the three T20Is on Saturday (July 27) in Pallekele. Three ODIs will follow, starting August 1 in Colombo.&nbsp;</p>

SLC replaced Chameera with Asitha Fernando, but Thushara’s replacement is yet to be named.</p>

<p>Per a report in ESPNcricinfo, Sri Lanka Team manager Mahinda Halangoda confirmed Thushara suffered a blow to his non-bowling hand, enough to keep him out of the three-match T20I series. He added that Thushara broke his finger while fielding (under the lights) on Wednesday, becoming the second SL pacer after Chameera to miss the India T20Is.</p>
