Former India cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, Yograj Singh has time and time again emphasized on how his son was kicked out from the Indian team. Now, Yograj has claimed that both MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli back-stabbed Yuvraj during his playing days which resulted in the southpaw falling down in the pecking order. Yograj further blamed the selectors for ‘betraying’ Yuvraj.

Yograj revealed that he had met Indian head coach Ravi Shastri recently while adding that he told the former Indian all-rounder that all great players should get a send-off on the basis of their service to the country.

“Along with these two, I would say that even the selectors betrayed him. I had met Ravi recently. He asked me for a photograph. I called him and pointed out that all great players should get a send-off based on their performances. When Dhoni, Kohli or Rohit retire, I would request the board to give them a good send-off as they have done so much for Indian cricket. Many have backstabbed him and it hurts,” Yograj told a news portal.

Yograj went on to blame former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh while taking a sly dig at the BCCI for appointing less-experienced selectors. Yograj claimed that Sarandeep used to go to meetings and say Yuvraj should be dropped and added that everyone was worried about Yuvraj’s good performances on the pitch.

Australian cricket ball manufacturer Kookaburra is working on wax applicator that will allow players to shine the ball without using saliva or sweat while minimising the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Generally, players shine one side of the ball and roughen up the other to make the ball swing in the air in a bid to deceive the batsman with the movement. However, the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to give another body blow with the usage of saliva and sweat is expected to be ban in the wake of the global crisis.

As per the guidelines released by Australian Institute of Sport, last week, rubbing of spit or sweat into the ball’s surface is banned in one of the conditions for the gentlemen’s game to resume.

Kookaburra said the wax applicator could provide a solution but is in “very early-stage product development.”

“At Kookaburra we are committed to continuous improvement and innovation in the game we love,” general manager David Orchard told AFP.

“As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic we are always looking for solutions to allow our game to be played safely by all cricketing communities around the world,” he said.

Cricket, like other sports, is suspended around the world due to the pandemic and the wax applicator would need approval from governing bodies before the resumption of play.

Kookaburra’s plan involves using a sponge to apply wax to the ball and then shine it as per the requirement of the bowler or the fielding team.

The present law strictly prohibits the use of artificial substances to change the condition of the ball and is regarded as a taboo in the world of cricket. Over the years, bowlers and fielders have been accused of using jelly, resin, lozenges, bottle tops, grit and sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball to their advantage.

As Premier League is finalizing proposals and ideas for a possible resumption of the halted 2019-20 campaign, Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) chief executive Gordon Taylor has hinted that halves may be shorter than the usual 45 minutes as discussions continue about Premier League’s future.

Most of the English top-flight clubs are on the same page while remaining committed to restarting the 2019-20 season but said: "it was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted".

Safety and well-being of individual players returning to work are crucial and Taylor said the authorities are working to put the safety of players first with a possibility of resuming the league in mid-June. But what comes as a major surprise is that there is a possibility of matches being less than 90 minutes, which is the professional rule for all the matches.

With cricket taking a backseat due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a sense of uncertainty as in whether major upcoming tournaments will go as scheduled. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 has already been postponed indefinitely whereas there are question marks on the ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in October-November. Veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is of the view that international players won’t be travelling in the near future to play cricket while adding he will be absolutely fine if the authorities decide not to conduct the IPL this year.

Harbhajan further said that cricket can’t be forced in amid the current situation while adding the game can wait as human life comes first.

'If IPL doesn't happen for first time in 13 years...' - Harbhajan Singh throws his weight on future of showpiece tournament

South Korea's professional sport returned to action after the coronavirus shutdown with the opening of a new baseball season Tuesday, while football and golf will soon follow suit in a ray of hope for suspended competitions worldwide.

Friday will see the delayed start of football's K-League, and next week some of golf's leading women players will tee up in a domestic tournament as South Korea becomes a rare hotspot for live sport.

Fans were not allowed in when any of Tuesday's five opening Korean Baseball Organisation (KBO) matches saw the first pitches thrown, a marked contrast from the packed stadiums of previous years when fans sang and cheered relentlessly no matter the score.

Instead, banners with photos of masked fans stretched across the empty bleachers at the Incheon-based SK Wyverns club's Munhak Baseball Stadium.

Banners carrying messages for victory were also put up at the LG Twins club's Jamsil derby in Seoul, saying: "Even if we are apart, we are TWINS."

Fans were divided over the unprecedented format.

"Baseball is finally back! But I wonder when I can actually go to the stadium," tweeted one fan.

Another online user said: "This doesn't feel like the opening of a season at all. I'm watching baseball from home, hugging a pillow."

At the stadium, strict health checks and hygiene measures were enforced.

Players must have their temperature checked twice before games, with face masks to be worn in all areas except the playing field and the dugouts, according to the KBO.

Players have also been asked not to shake hands or exchange high-fives, while spitting is prohibited -- putting a new complexion on what is South Korea's most popular spectator sport.

- US tunes in -

ESPN announced it will show six KBO League games per week to fans pining for live baseball in the US, while broadcasters in 10 foreign territories have snapped up rights to air K-League matches.

South Korea endured one of the worst early outbreaks of the disease outside China, prompting professional sports to suspend or delay their seasons.

But the country appears to have brought its outbreak under control thanks to an extensive "trace, test and treat" programme.

The start-up will bring welcome live action in a barren sports world where fans have had to make do with sports channels and broadcasters airing repeats of past events.

The K-League, originally due to start in February, will kick off Friday with a blockbuster clash between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, champions for the past three seasons, against FA Cup winners Suwon Bluewings.

And South Korea will next week become the first country to see women's professional golf resume after COVID-19.

South Korean players dominate women's golf with eight featuring in the world's top 20, including number one Ko Jin-young.

The $1.8 million the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Championship begins on May 14 in Yangju, east of Seoul with world number six Kim Sei-young and 10th-ranked Lee Jeong-eun in the 144-strong field.

South Korea has been seeing only a trickle of new coronavirus infections in recent days, with three fresh cases reported on Tuesday taking the total to 10,804.

Australian tennis maverick Nick Kyrgios invited Rafael Nadal to take part in a cosy video chat on Sunday despite their stormy on-court relationship.

As the coronavirus has sent the tennis season into hibernation until July 13 at the earliest, a host of players have recently taken to social media for face-to-face exchanges.

So, on Sunday, after the BBC had asked for suggestions as to the most sought-after facetimes, Kyrgios was quick to respond.

"Rafa lets do Instagram live together. I am down with it. Rafael Nadal let's do it," wrote the Australian on Instagram.

Kyrgios and Nadal have endured a bitter relationship on court.

Last year, the 19-time Grand Slam winner accused the Australian of "lacking respect" after Kyrgios won a stormy encounter in Mexico.

Kyrgios responded by claiming the Spanish world number two was "super-salty".

They met again at Wimbledon last summer when Nadal won but fumed after the Australian appeared to spear a ball directly at him.

Germany's minister for the interior and sport said Sunday he supports a resumption of the country's football season this month despite three people testing positive for coronavirus at Bundesliga club Cologne.

"I find the schedule proposed by the German league plausible and I support the restart in May," Horst Seehofer told Bild newspaper, three days before a meeting of German authorities to discuss the issue.

The German Football League (DFL) backs matches resuming without spectators around mid-May, which would make it the first major European championship to make such a move.

The sports ministers of the 16 German states have also approved the DFL's plans.

Seehofer, who plays a key government role on the issue as he holds several portfolios, has emphasised that the teams and players must respect several conditions.

"If there is a case of coronavirus in a team or its management, the club as a whole, and possibly also the team against which it last played, must go into quarantine for two weeks," he said.

"There will continue therefore to be risks for the schedule of matches and for the standings," if there is any contamination.

But he said clubs would not have any special testing privileges denied to the rest of the population. Some sides had suggested carrying out frequent tests of their players as a preventative measure against the virus.

Germany had reported 162,496 cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday, but its death toll of 6,649 remains considerably lower than that of comparable European countries, which are home to the continent's other top football leagues.

In France, Paris Saint-Germain were declared Ligue 1 champions on Thursday after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced professional sport could not resume before September.

Meanwhile, English Premier League clubs on Friday reconfirmed their commitment to finish the season subject to coronavirus restrictions being lifted.

There are still 92 games remaining. They will be behind closed doors with neutral venues suggested.

Also on Friday Italy's 20 Serie A clubs reiterated their unanimous desire to complete the season despite sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora saying the chances of restarting were "increasingly narrow".

In Spain, La Liga is planning to start testing players for the coronavirus between Tuesday and Thursday next week, after which they would then be able to resume individual training programmes within 48 hours.

Clubs in Germany resumed training in early April while adhering to strict social distancing guidelines. However, the risk is still apparent.

Cologne announced Friday three people had tested positive for the virus and were to be placed into a 14-day quarantine at home.

Cologne midfielder Birger Verstraete, whose partner suffers from a heart condition, said it was "strange" the club had not put the whole squad in quarantine following the tests, as suggested by Seehofer.

"It's not up to me to decide what to do in the Bundesliga but I can say my head is not in football" at the moment, he told Flemish TV station VTM. "The health of my family, of my partner is the priority."

With a lot of debates and discussions going around the possible return of Premier League, the English Football Association (FA) are planning to slash its annual budget by 75 million pounds to tackle an estimated loss of 300 million pounds over the next four-year cycle due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Chairman Greg Clarke has also warned the FA Council members, in a letter, that it would take quite some time for the fans to return to stadiums to attend live matches again. Clarke further said that FA’s plans and the future project will also be impacted due to the cut in the annual budget and revised planning is already being chalked out.

“The Board has agreed that a sensible cut to the annual budget is 75 million pounds,” he said.

“In a worst-case scenario, this would be necessary for the next four years to offset a 300 million pounds deficit.

Australian Sports Minister Richard Colbeck has said that the country can deal with the challenge of getting all the participating for the ICC T20 World Cup but the real issue for the authority is whether it is worth having the showpiece event behind closed doors.

Travel restrictions and lockdown measures have put question marks over the commencement of the ICC T20 World Cup and even India’s tour of Australia. Reportedly, Cricket Australia is looking at a massive loss of 300 million Australian dollars if the schedule is disrupted due to coronavirus.
Colbeck has said he would love to see the Test series between India and Australia go ahead as per schedule. He further emphasized on the issue of World Cup being played in empty stadiums as he said world cricket will have to look into the matter closely as well.

English Football Association chairman Greg Clarke does not believe fans will be allowed into stadiums "any time soon" and has warned that the coronavirus crisis could cost the governing body £300 million ($373 million).

Football across England has been indefinitely suspended, with the 2019/20 season in all leagues below the top four divisions already declared over.

However, there are growing fears that the 2020/21 campaign also faces huge disruption due to social-distancing guidelines.

"With social distancing in place for some time to come we do face substantial changes to the whole football ecosystem," Clarke wrote in a letter to the FA Council.

"For example, it's hard to foresee crowds of fans, who are the lifeblood of the game, returning to matches any time soon."

The Premier League is still hoping to finish the season behind closed doors, with "Project Restart" aimed at minimising a predicted £1 billion loss if the campaign cannot be completed.

It is understood top-flight clubs were told on Friday that the remaining matches of the season must be played at neutral venues.

Further down the pyramid, where gate receipts make up a much higher percentage of clubs' income without lucrative TV deals, there are doubts over whether a new season can even start without fans being allowed to attend.

The FA has also been affected by the cancellation of at least four England fixtures and the suspension of the FA Cup.

Clarke said a "sensible" £75 million budget cut had been agreed.

"In a worst-case scenario, this would be necessary for the next four years to offset a £300 million deficit," he added.

English FA bracing for long spell without fans

Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne on Monday said that he and his teammates would be “pretty devastated” if India don’t tour Australia later in the year 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. India is set to head Down Under in the month of October to play a T20I tri-series followed by a four-match Test series in December.

There are plenty of talks going on surrounding India’s tour of Australia given the current travel restrictions in the country until September.
Replying to a question about the tour in an online press conference, Labuschagne said: “Well it would mean that we are not playing cricket which is pretty devastating for me, the rest of the team and for the country.”

Before India’s tour Down Under, Australia are scheduled to host the T20 World Cup starting October 18, however, there are dark clouds hovering around the mega event given the uncertainty due to global crisis. While Australia has reported just over 6,800 positive cases with less than 100 casualties in the country, Labuschange lauded the Australian healthcare system and the way they have tackled the virus thus far.

“Everything is changing so quickly so it’s really hard to put my finger on how everything’s going to pan out. Hopefully, it does pan out well but if it doesn’t it will be very disappointing.” In the meantime, the 25-year-old, who has enjoyed a breakout year in Tests and ODIs, is working on sharpening his skills during this forced break.

Even though the situation surrounding COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t quite resolved in the United Kingdom, the Premier League chiefs are working on a brand new seven-week football festival if the halted season is resumed in coming weeks.

The seven-week football festival includes completion of the league and the FA Cup while easing concerns regarding piling of matches in a shorter timeframe.

The Premier League is aiming to resume the campaign on June 12, however, the seven-week football festival gives an extra-week to rework things if there are complications or confusions. But, given UEFA’s cut-off date to complete domestic season by August 2, the Premier League must begin by June 19, which is just under seven weeks away.

However, a lot depends on government clearance and its easing of lockdown as they are set to announce fresh advisory on Thursday. Clubs may reluctantly accept they are running out of time if there is no reprieve in lockdown measures.

Friday’s meeting of the 20 shareholder clubs witnessed the debate being on medical conditions which will allow full training and behind-closed-door matches at neutral venues. Premier League working on 7-week football festival; aims to start on June 12

Sports' big ticket events, the 2020 Olympics, European football championships, Wimbledon and the British Open golf tournament have gone to the wall due to the coronavirus.

However, there are some shoots of recovery as sports worldwide make tentative plans to return to action.

AFP Sport looks at what we know so far with the major events:

FOOTBALL

-- English Premier League, which still has 92 games to play, has reconfirmed their commitment to finish the season. But matches would be behind closed doors and reportedly at up to 10 neutral venues. Liverpool are on the brink of a first league title for 30 years with a 25-point lead at the top of the table.

-- Horst Seehofer, the German minister for the interior and sport, said he supports a resumption of the season despite three people testing positive for coronavirus at Bundesliga club Cologne. A resumption would not be possible before May 16. A final decision is expected Wednesday.

-- In Spain, La Liga is reportedly planning to start testing players for the coronavirus between Tuesday and Thursday, after which they would then be able to resume individual training programmes within 48 hours.

-- Italy's footballers can now take part in individual training sessions as the strictest coronavirus lockdown measures begin to ease. But Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will only allow teams to resume organised group activities on May 18.

-- South Korea look certain to have the honour of being the first league back in action. The season will start on May 8 but behind closed doors.

-- In France, Paris Saint-Germain were declared Ligue 1 champions after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced professional sport could not resume before September.

-- The Dutch football federation called an end to their season on April 24.

CRICKET

-- The English season will not start until July 1 at the earliest and likely behind closed doors. The new Hundred tournament has been scrapped until 2021. However, England could begin their rescheduled three-Test series against the West Indies on July 8.

The series was originally due to start on June 4 at the Oval. Australia and Pakistan are still due to tour later in the summer.

-- The money-spinning IPL, which should have started on March 29, was postponed but media reports said the BCCI may aim for a tournament in September-October, ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

TENNIS

-- The ATP and WTA will not resume tournament play until July 13 at the earliest.

-- The French Open at Roland Garros has already been moved to Sept 20-Oct 4 although there are suggestions that it may even be put back by a further week.

-- The United States Tennis Association will decide mid-June whether or not the US Open will take place in New York.

-- Low-key action has returned with an eight-man exhibition competition in the tiny town of Hoehr-Grenzhausen in Germany. The series does not have spectators, ball boys or line judges.

-- Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach of Serena Williams, says he is planning a league of 50 matches at his academy near Nice in the south of France with "millions of US dollars in prize money". It will be broadcast live under the title "Ultimate Tennis Showdown" starting on the weekend of May 16.

MOTOR SPORT

-- After 10 races were either cancelled or postponed, Formula One hopes to open its season in Austria with back-to-back races on July 5 and 12.

-- NASCAR in the United States will return on May 17 at Darlington Raceway, the first of four oval races over 11 days.

-- MotoGP, with eight races already off, is scheduled to return on August 9 at Brno in the Czech Republic.

Sports' big ticket events, the 2020 Olympics, European football championships, Wimbledon and the British Open golf tournament have gone to the wall due to the coronavirus.

Sports' big ticket events, the 2020 Olympics, European football championships, Wimbledon and the British Open golf tournament have gone to the wall due to the coronavirus. However, there are some shoots of recovery as sports worldwide make tentative plans to return to action. AFP Sport looks at what we know so far with the major events: FOOTBALL -- English Premier League, which still has 92 games to play, has reconfirmed their commitment to finish the season. CRICKET -- The English season will not start until July 1 at the earliest and likely behind closed doors. TENNIS -- The ATP and WTA will not resume tournament play until July 13 at the earliest. MOTOR SPORT -- After 10 races were either cancelled or postponed, Formula One hopes to open its season in Austria with back-to-back races on July 5 and 12. -- NASCAR in the United States will return on May 17 at Darlington Raceway, the first of four oval races over 11 days. -- MotoGP, with eight races already off, is scheduled to return on August 9 at Brno in the Czech Republic. BASKETBALL -- The NBA could complete its season on courts in Las Vegas convention centres. Players and their families, plus other essential personnel, would stay in a quarantined area in MGM hotels along the Las Vegas Strip while practising and competing on courts in the same facilities. When will I see you again? Sport bids to step out of virus shadow

Rated one of the finest pacers in the world of cricket, Indian speedster Mohammed Shami recently opened up about his own and his family’s fears in the past to Rohit Sharma during an Instagram Live session. Shami, during the interaction, revealed that he contemplated suicide thrice in 2018 which, for him, was marred by allegations of domestic violence.

Shami revealed his family members were scared that he would have jumped off the balcony and hence, they were on high alert 24 hours to make sure everything is fine with him.

"I think if my family had not supported me back then I would have lost my cricket. I thought of committing suicide three times during that period due to severe stress," said Shami.

Thought of committing suicide three times due to personal problems, stress: Mohammed Shami

Despite several controversies and bans, Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif is regarded as one of the most skilful bowlers to have taken to the cricket field. Asif, who last played for Pakistan in August 2010, has now opened up on the spot-fixing scandal and his seven-year-ban which ended his career for the Green Army.

Opening up on his career, Asif said that his ambition was to finish his career on a better not while adding he does have regrets to not fulfilling his potential and become one of the legends of the game. However, Asif is of the view that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) resurrected everyone’s career who were indulged in fixing, before and after him, but never gave him a second chance to make a comeback.

“Of course. My ambition was to finish my career on a better note and I do have regrets. But that's a different story. I think whatever happened it had to happen and that's okay. Everyone has regrets in their life and a few want to talk about them, but I think I am fine. Everyone makes mistakes and I did too,” Asif told ESPNCricinfo.

“Players had been indulging in fixing before me [in 2010] and even after me. But those before me are working with PCB and there are few after me still playing. Everyone was given a second chance and there are few who never got the same treatment [as me]. PCB never tried to save me regardless of the fact that I am the kind of bowler who was highly regarded by everyone in the world. But anyway I'm not sitting around brooding about the past or hung up on it,” the Pakistan pacer added.

Asif, apart from several doping controversies, was banned for seven years for deliberately bowling no-balls during the England versus Pakistan Test in Lord’s in 2010. On 19 August 2015, the ICC suspended its previous orders and allowed Asif to play all formats of the game, effective as of 2 September 2015.

However, Asif reckons he made his career count in whatever matches he played for Pakistan as he adds that it was due to his talent and skill that world-class batsmen still remember and talks about him.

“What happened is history. However much I played in my career, I made it count, duniya hila ke rakh de thi (I shook up the world). That is more important for me to think about. Even today, so many years later, the best batsmen in the world still remember me and they talk about me. Just think how big the impact was that I had on the world. So this is what makes me proud - that there is a reason KP, AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla talk highly about me. That is what makes me happy,” Asif said.

India lose top spot in ICC Test rankings for first time since October 2016; Australia the new world No. 1 in Tests and T20Is

England pacer Jofra Archer made a scintillating international debut for England in the year 2019. The Barbadian-born speedster firstly tormented Pakistan before taking the ICC World Cup 2019 by storm and following it up with a phenomenal outing in the Ashes 2019. However, Archer is not popular only for his exploits on the cricket field but his activity on social media platform Twitter.

Archer’s tweets from the past have glaring similarity with incidents happening in the present and many of his old tweets have resurfaced on the micro-blogging platform which has some similarity with the present.

As soon as Indian Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday extended the lockdown period by another two weeks till May 17, Archer’s tweet from 2013 started to gain traction.

In this particular tweet, dating back to September 13, 2013, Archer had written: “These two weeks gonne take forever to go by.”

As soon as Indian Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday extended the lockdown period by another two weeks till May 17, Archer’s tweet from 2013 started to gain traction. Former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs has decided to donate the iconic bat from the historic match between South Africa and Australia which was played at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in the year 2006. The match is regarded as one of the best of all-times due to the number of runs scored by both the sides (434 by Australia, 438 by South Africa). Gibbs, who was adjudged Man of the Match for his blistering 175 off 111 laced with 21 boundaries and seven sixes, has decided to auction his bat used in that match in a bid to raise funds for the battle against COVID-19 pandemic.

“Supersport showing the #438 game. The bat I used that day will be up for auction to raise funds for covid. Kept it all these years,” Gibbs tweeted on Friday.

The Johannesburg ODI between South Africa and Australia, also the last match of the five-match ODI series, was a perfect example of a humdinger.

Batting first, Aussie batsmen smoked Proteas bowling attack all over the park to register a world-record score of 434-4 in 50 overs with Ricky Ponting hammering 164 runs. The likes of Michael Hussey (81 off 51), Simon Katich (79 off 90), Adam Gilchrist (55 off 44) and Andrew Symonds (27* off 13) made a mockery out of the South African bowling attack to post a mountainous total on the board.

South Africa, while chasing 435, lost opener Boeta Dippenaar (1) for cheap and when it looked like things were grim for the hosts, Gibbs and Graeme Smith took the charge in the middle and whacked a quality bowling attack of Australia. While Gibbs went on to score 175, Smith smashed a 55-ball 90 followed by Mark Boucher’s 50 not out off 43. It was Boucher who scored a boundary off Lee in the second-last delivery of the final over to register the memorable win. But it was Gibbs, who did the heavy lifting.

Premier League clubs were due to hold talks on Friday on how to finish the season as Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero admitted players were scared about being rushed back into action.

The English top-flight is facing an eye-watering estimated loss of around £1 billion ($1.25 billion) if no more football is played due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Playing the 92 remaining games behind closed doors would mitigate that loss, avoiding the need to repay hundreds of millions to broadcasters.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are on the brink of their first league title for 30 years and there are many other issues to resolve, including Champions League qualification and relegation.

But the English top-flight faces huge logistical difficulties in its attempts to return to action, with Britain one of the countries worst-hit by COVID-19.

"Obviously, the majority of players are scared but above all because they have children, babies and family, they might live with their parents," Aguero told Spanish show El Chiringuito TV.

"If we return I am sure everyone will be tense because the minute one person starts to feel ill, it will be 'what's going on there?'."

Players would potentially face weeks away from their families, quarantined in hotels.

"I am hoping that it doesn't come that scenario," said Brighton striker Glenn Murray. "That is far-fetched, to spend eight weeks away from your family is quite a big ask."

Murray also labelled the idea that players could be asked to wear face masks during training sessions as "farcical".

- 'It only takes one case' -

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, who owns a stake in League Two side Salford City, is one of many who believes that economic factors are overriding safety considerations.

"How many people have to die playing football in the Premier League before it becomes unpalatable?" Neville told Sky Sports.

"If it was a non-economic decision there would be no football for months."

Just providing the tests necessary to get the ball rolling is a political headache.

According to reports, players, coaches and backroom staff would need to be tested two to three times a week.

"If football was to resume then testing will be key and an extra layer of training will be required," former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro told the BBC.

"It only takes one case for all of this to blow up."

Although those tests would be privately sourced and paid for, there is still unease at the prospect of young, healthy footballers being regularly tested when other members of society are not.

The Premier League can ill afford another PR disaster after several stumbles so far.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Bournemouth have backtracked on their plans to use government money to prop up the wages of non-playing staff due to public pressure.

There are also fears that football's return might provoke supporters to ignore social-distancing guidelines, even if games take place behind closed doors.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson believes "thousands of people" would turn up outside Anfield on the day the Reds end their 30-year wait to win the Premier League.

With so much at stake, the Premier League will do everything in its power not to have to follow the examples of leagues in France and the Netherlands in abandoning their seasons.

However, even the world's most powerful league may find the difficulties too great and have to brace itself for a devastating financial hit.

Premier League holds talks with 'Project Restart' under pressure

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro wants football competitions in the country resume services soon despite the high number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Bolsonaro argued that players have "small chance of dying" from coronavirus due to their top physical fitness.

Bolsonaro, while likening the COVID-19 pandemic to “a little flu” has downplayed the risk brought by the coronavirus. Brazilian football leagues were suspended on March 15, whereas the Brazilian championship was scheduled to kick-start in the month of May. However, the commencement of the Brazilian championship looks unlikely given that the country has become a COVID-19 hotspot with more than 5,900 deaths. Medical experts and doctors are of the view that the pandemic is expected to peak.

Bolsonaro said that lots of people want football to return due to unemployment within the clubs.

“There is a lot of people in soccer that are favourable to a return because unemployment is knocking on clubs’ doors too,” Bolsonaro said in an interview with Radio Guaiba. “Footballers, if infected with the virus, have a small chance of dying. That’s because of their physical state because they are athletes.”

The Brazilian president further said that the new health minister will issue advisory for matches to return behind closed doors but admitted that players might be reluctant to take to the pitch. Bolsonaro said that the Brazilian government is ready to help in the resumption of live football in the country.

“The decision to restart soccer is not mine, but we can help,” Bolsonaro said, adding he has spoken with Gremio coach Renato Portaluppi about the issue and was told that players are still worried about the virus.

Brazil’s arch-rivals and neighbours, Argentina has already cancelled the remainder of 2019-20 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas France decided to conclude the season mid-way while declaring Paris Saint-Germain as winners of Ligue 1. The Dutch FA also cancelled the Eridiviese with no champions, promotion or relegation in place.

Furthermore, Brazil’s football confederation on Tuesday, in a statement, said that competitions should return “whenever it is possible, with safety and health care assurances for all those involved”.

On Thursday, the Brazil football confederation had said Bolsonaro’s health ministry suggestions of the measures need to be taken before resumption.

Whereas, a director at Sao Paulo FC, 1994 World Cup winner, Rai said that his club is against the resumption of play amid COVID-19 pandemic while calling for Bolsonaro’s resignation due to his “irresponsible” management during the crisis.

“We want to return in the proper time, in accord with recommendations, and gradually,” Raí told GloboEsporte.

Match fixing? Former PCB chairman alleges Wasim Akram offered Atta-ur-Rahman to underperform in a match

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has landed himself in trouble again after Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi slapped a criminal and defamation suit against the Rawalpindi Express for his alleged comments against him on a YouTube video.

Rizvi, who is a long-serving legal advisor of PCB, confirmed that he has initiated defamation and a criminal suit against Akhtar while lodging a formal complaint with the Federal Investigation Agency under its cyber-crime laws.

In the legal notice sent to Akhtar, Rizvi highlighted legal charges and punishments awarded to the former fast-bowler throughout his career. He also demanded that he retracts his statements, tenders an unconditional apology, pays PKR 100 million in damages and refrains from repeating and making defamatory remarks against the lawyer in the future.

Akhtar had posted a video following the three-year ban imposed on Umar Akmal for not reporting corrupt approaches but ended up irking the Pakistan Bar Council, which cautioned him to be careful in what he says. The Pakistan Bar Council, in a statement, stated that it was disappointed by the comments made by Akthar towards Rizvi. "Shoaib Akhtar should be very careful in his discussions on matters pertaining to the legal community," the statement said. Shoaib Akhtar faces defamation, criminal proceedings from PCB's legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi

Veteran batsman Ross Taylor won New Zealand Cricket's top award for the third time Friday and vowed to bat on until the 2023 World Cup in India.

The 36-year-old was awarded the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal in a virtual ceremony held online because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Taylor was a key part of the Black Caps' run to a second consecutive World Cup final last July, where they lost to England on the back of an obscure boundary countback rule.

In the past 12 months, he also became New Zealand's most prolific Test run-scorer and entered the record books as the first cricketer to play 100 internationals in all three formats.

"It's been an amazing year, it's been full of ups and downs," he said.

After back-to-back defeats in World Cup deciders, Taylor is hoping it's third time lucky as he targets the 2023 tournament to be held in India.

"The biggest thing, I think, is the hunger and the mental motivation to keep getting better, if that's still there then age is just a number," he told reporters.

Taylor said he would remain with the Black Caps as long as he felt he deserved his spot and was contributing to the team.

"I'll see if I can get to (age) 38 or 39, which will be the next World Cup, and we'll see from there," he said.

Taylor made his international debut in 2006 and has since played 101 Tests, 232 one-dayers and 100 T20s.

An ambassador for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has tested positive for the new coronavirus, the tournament's organisers said on Thursday.

Retired Qatari midfielder Adel Khamis, 54, "was unfortunately diagnosed with the novel coronavirus, COVID-19," the Supreme Committee for the organisation of the 2022 tournament wrote in a tweet.

"We wish a speedy to all those affected."

The number of confirmed infections among those involved in construction for 2022 facilities stands at eight across three stadium projects, but organisers have not given an updated toll since April 17.

Qatar has reported 13,409 cases of COVID-19, 1,372 recoveries and 10 deaths.

Work on Qatar's World Cup stadiums and mega-projects linked to the tournament has continued apace despite tough social distancing rules to stem the spread of coronavirus among the largely migrant workforce.

The supreme committee responsible for delivering the tournament said it "is reviewing the situation on a continuous basis and will take the necessary measures to protect the health and safety of all construction workers and direct staff".

Those measures "may include temporary suspension of work as and when required," it added in a statement.

Khamis is one of the public faces of the 2022 tournament along with fellow ambassadors Tim Cahill of Australia and Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez.

Construction has continued through the health crisis even as non-essential retail has been halted and mosques, parks and restaurants have closed.

The PGA Tour is changing its qualification guidelines for next season by allowing more golfers to retain their eligibility status even if they had an off season in 2019-20.

Normally golfers who don't finish in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings will lose their PGA spots for the next season.

But because of the shortening of the 2019-20 season due to the Covid-19 outbreak, organizers are now allowing exempt players to retain their playing status for 2020-21 regardless of where they finish.

The Tour has revised its schedule and is due to resume play on June 11 with an invitational event in Fort Worth, Texas.

"This eligibility update, contingent upon the planned restart of the season at the Charles Schwab Challenge the week of June 8, was deemed the best and most equitable solution for the membership," a Tour spokesman said in a news release on Thursday.

The Tour also decided to not have the top players from the development Korn Ferry Tour earn promotions to the PGA. Their positions will be filled by players who fell from the top 125.

Also, eligibility for the Tournament of Champions, normally limited to event winners from the prior year, will be altered for next year.

In addition to all 2020 winners, non-winners who finish in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup playoff points list and who qualified for the 2020 Tour Championship will be able to compete in the Tournament of Champions.

Cricket fans were left surprised to see media reports stating that retired South African batsman AB de Villiers has been offered to lead the Proteas once again in the international circuit. However, the swashbuckling right-handed batsman came out quickly on social media platform Twitter to falsify the claims that he has been offered the captaincy role of the South African national team. South Africa’s Director of Cricket and former skipper, Graeme Smith was also quick to quash the reports as he termed it ‘fake news’

“Reports suggesting Cricket SA have asked me to lead the Proteas are just not true. It's hard to know what to believe these days. Crazy times. Stay safe everyone,” De Villiers tweeted on Wednesday.

There have been plenty of talks surrounding AB de Villiers’ return to international cricket and both Mr. 360 and the South African board including head coach Mark Boucher have been pretty open about the matter. However, ABD has always stated that he wants to prove his form and fitness before donning the national colours. But what is the truth behind the whole story of AB de Villiers being offered to lead the South African side again? A news agency had misquoted de Villiers from his interview in Star Sports’ show ‘Cricket Connected’ and from there the entire story escalated.

So what is the true story? De Villiers was brutally honest in the show as he explained why he wants to prove his fitness and form before coming out of international retirement and play for South Africa again. The stylish batsman further stated that with COVID-19 pandemic postponing or cancelling every series and tournament, it is hard to say when cricket will resume and at what state he will be, at that point of time, in regards to his fitness and overall game. De Villiers further revealed that he has had a conversation with Boucher regarding a possible return during Mzansi Super League while adding he wants to be 100 per cent sure about everything before committing to play for the Proteas.

Here’s the full transcript of AB de Villiers’ interview in Star Sports’ Cricket Connected:

Q: When can you see yourself playing for South Africa again?

AB de Villiers: It is a tough question and I don’t have an honest answer yet. What I can share with you guys is that the desire is there from my side. The desire to get me involved with the Proteas have been shown by Cricket South Africa as well. With Mark Boucher as Coach and Graeme Smith as Director, they are keen to get me involved which is very pleasing to hear. I hope everything works out and there a few things that need to fall in place. The most important thing to me is I have to be in the tip-top form and I have to be better than the player next to me. If I deserve a spot in the side it becomes easy for me to feel like I deserve to be in the side and I have earned my spot. I have not been in the Proteas side for a while and I think that is important for myself and for other people as well to see if I am still good enough to play them. Secondly, my fitness and health. Who knows where will I be in 6-12 months’ time with this virus and my desire to play in 12 months’ time I don’t know what is going to happen with the schedule. It is very difficult to lock yourself in 12 months down the line, that I wouldn’t want to do because I know I might sick myself and some other people who rely on me to play. We will see what happens for now. I feel like my desire to play again. I am hungry now to perform I always wanted to play for SA and it has been privilege and honour to wear your country’s badge on your heart hopefully that happens again and I will do everything I can to give myself that opportunity again.

Yes, I had some discussions with Mark Boucher during the Mzansi Super League in SA. We had a lot of fun with the Tshwane Spartans the team that I played for. With Boucher as a coach, I really enjoyed my time there. Boucher is a born leader he is a natural leader. When he speaks you listen because he says the right things at the right time but secondly he backs with 147 test matches for SA a lot of ODIs and a lot of experience playing international cricket. When I listen to him I do feel like there is always something to learn so I really enjoy him as a coach and we started talking about my enjoyment for the game which he could see on my face when I was playing for his team, he asked me where does this come from and why do you have so much energy and why do love the game so much doesn’t it mean you have a story to tell at the international level. I told him I have never closed that book I always wanted to play I had some obstacles to cover in the last 3-4 years from a personal point of view. I always loved playing cricket and always loved hitting the cricket ball there were a lot of other factors involved me not contributing the game as much as I should have. Playing for his team there were no admin issues like that at all from the outside point of view all I could do is focus on my cricket I really enjoyed my time with Tshwane Spartans especially with the young players sharing my experiences with them, I truly felt I had a purpose and a big role to play in the team. So hopefully I can have that role again moving forward and who knows it will be for proteas under Boucher as a coach. As I said before if everything falls in place I will get that opportunity again.

Yes, that is my worry the schedule for the next 12 months is unclear the virus is hitting and what is going to happen with the cricket schedule around the world. That is one of my big worries and reasons why I am not committing to any cricket at the moment. I have always been a person who tries to be in now as much as possible, for now, it is important for me to think there might be a possibility that I could play for SA again for me it is important to be as fit as possible send time on the treadmill be at the gym making sure that I am fitter stronger and healthier to the person next to me whoever is going to be my competition. Once I get an opportunity to go outside my house is to start hitting the cricket ball and to get into that form that I was in 2015 and let's say in the latter half of my career when I was playing cricket I really want to get into that form of playing cricket I quickly as I can. I want to focus but there is a lot of uncertainty in terms of scheduling of cricket over the next 12 months we will have to see what is going to happen.

Yes, things might change if the tournament might get postponed to 2021, I don’t know honestly it is something I don’t want to commit to at the moment, because of the past experiences really getting hurt in the past by committing to certain things I wasn’t 100% sure of. Not communicating to the right people at the right time. I really want to get right this time once I feel I am 100% ready to commit to avail myself to SA for T20 WC whenever that happens with good communication to Mark Boucher, Graeme Smith and whoever to communicate with then I will get to a point where ok let’s put it out there I am 100% available without getting picked or not but I am prepared to put myself out there and give it a full go.

Q: Have I learnt any new skills in the lockdown period?

ABD: To be honest not really, but life has changed a lot. To stay in the vicinity of my house we have got a small garden, it’s been frustrating with me being an outdoors person I love outdoors I love my space and freedom. We have discovered that with good strong routine and you really feel like you have got some kind of purpose. I have got a new workout, I have got a small gym in my home where I run a lot on my treadmill and I have the basics when it comes to dumbbells and I have mats to do my floor exercise as well. So I have kept myself busy with that I have got 2 toddlers 3 and 5 yrs old and they have kept me busy. We do a little bit of school that we do online and my wife and I, we work throughout the day with our toddlers and with cooking making some nice food and at night when the kids are off to sleep we have an hour or two to ourselves we watch a bit of TV series that keeps us busy and entertaining. The most important for me and my wife this lockdown has been the health and a good routine.

No, AB de Villiers hasn't been offered South Africa captaincy; Here's what Mr. 360 had said about his possible return to international cricket

English cricket's controversial new Hundred competition has been delayed until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, cricket chiefs announced on Thursday.

The new 100-balls-per-side format, to be played by eight franchises rather than the established 18 first-class counties, had been due to start in July.

But with the English season delayed until at least July 1, with any matches after that likely to be played behind closed doors, the England and Wales Cricket Board has decided to hold the Hundred over until next year.

"The situation we find ourselves in as a country means that delivery of the Hundred will not be possible this summer," ECB chief executive Tom Harrison in a statement.

"Whilst we are naturally disappointed that we won't get to realise our ambitions this year, the Hundred will go ahead in 2021 when we are safely able to deliver everything we intended to help grow the game."

The ECB's statement stressed that an event with no fans "directly contradicts the competition's goal to attract a broader audience."

Global travel restrictions also mean it is not possible for star players from other countries to take part.

- New fans -

The ECB have long insisted the Hundred, which they hoped to launch off the back of England's success in winning last year's World Cup on home soil, would attract a new audience vital to safeguarding cricket's future.

But many voices within English cricket have been opposed to the competition from the outset, arguing there is no space for a new format in an already congested calendar.

They say many of the ECB's aims could be achieved with better support for the existing Twenty20 Blast.

Even before the pandemic, the ECB had itself forecast the Hundred would make a loss in its first five seasons.

Costs in the first year, including the £1.3 million ($1.6 million) paid to each county, were estimated at £58 million, against an income of £51 million.

But Harrison, one of the prime movers behind the Hundred, said Thursday: "As we emerge from the fallout of COVID-19, there will be an even greater need for the Hundred.

"Our survival as a game, long-term, will be dependent on our ability to recover financially and continue our ambition to build on cricket's growing fan base.

"That need has not gone anyway, if anything, it is now more critical."

Harrison was equally adamant the tournament would be a financial success in the long run.

"The Hundred will create millions in revenues for the game, through hosting fees, hospitality and ticket sales, as well as delivering £25 million in annual financial distributions to all first-class counties and MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club)," he said.

"Its role in driving participation alongside supporting the development of the women's game will be material in generating take-up of our game across country-wide communities."

Under Goswami’s captaincy, the Indian football team won the coveted gold medal in the 1962 Asian Games while finishing runner-up in the Asian Cup in 1964. Goswami played club football for Mohun Bagan. He holds the distinction of playing for a single club, Mohun Bagan, throughout his club career despite numerous offers from other clubs including one reported offer from English side Tottenham Hotspur.

Goswami was suffering from underlying ailments with sugar, prostate and nerve problems for the last few months and breathed his last on Thursday (April 30).

"He suffered a cardiac arrest and died in the hospital at around 5pm, a family source told PTI.

For Calcutta University, he captained both the cricket and football teams in the same year. He was an all-rounder in cricket and featured in two Ranji Trophy finals for Bengal.

Goswami made his international debut for India in the year 1956 during team’s 1-0 win over the Chinese Olympic team and went on to represent India in 50 international matches including Olympics, Asian Games, Asia Cup and Merdeka Cup. However, he quit international football in 1964 at the age of just 27.

Goswami was known for his dribbling skills, splendid passing accuracy, fabulous ball control and ability to bamboozle defenders with body feints and those traits made him a superstar. His sense of positioning and nack of unleashing volleys from anywhere in the penalty box made him unique.

One of Goswami’s famous exploits on the cricket field came against Gary Sobers’ West Indies as he and Subroto Guha played their way to register the historic innings for combined Central and East Zone team in Indore. Goswami scalped a staggering eight wickets in that match against the Windies. There were calls to include him in the Indian Test side but the call never came.

In First-Class cricket, Goswami accumulated 1592 runs in 46 matches with one cnetury and seven haf-centuries under his belt. He further picked up 47 wickets at an average of 24.08.

Indian football legend Chuni Goswami, 82, passes away

The Premier League is planning to return on June 8 with all the clubs receiving a proposed new schedule list to finish the halted season despite COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc in the UK. England’s top-flight league is aiming to return in just six weeks and would allow teams to fully train from May 18. However, players will have to cover their faces as a part of new rules to allow a safe return to full training.

League chiefs have already sent the schedule of matches to all 20 clubs ahead of a crucial meeting on Friday. And as per The Telegraph, the plan will be discussed on an individual basis with clubs in a bid to get the proposed scheduled approved by this week.

However, the plans are based on COVID-19 lockdown measures being eased with the next Government review due to take place on May 7. It is still unclear whether the restrictions will be relaxed for the Premier League to resume on their desired date.

Under the proposed plan, players will be tested for coronavirus over the weekend of May 8 and May 9 before returning to training in small groups. While some clubs including London giants Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have already resumed training minimally, others are still following social distancing rules.

Football players could be restricted to train under quarantine and there have been talks of players coming to the training ground in their kits in a bid to avoid dressing rooms.

Mass testing will be available for all players, staff and media at training centres and stadiums as Premier League desperately forcing all remaining fixture into a six-week period.

Meanwhile, UEFA want the Champions League final to be played on August 29 and would expect all the domestic leagues to end their respective campaigns prior to that. FA Cup is also set to restart.

A PL spokesperson said: “It is our objective to complete the 2019-20 season but all dates are tentative while the impact of Covid-19 develops.”
