<p>Operation Safed Sagar, which was released earlier this month, brings one of the lesser-known chapters of the 1999 Kargil War to audiences. Alongside Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill and Abhay Verma, the Netflix series also stars Mihir Ahuja as Flying Officer C.H. Bal Reddy, aka Baldy, one of the young officers navigating the challenges of war while balancing his personal life.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The series sheds light on the Indian Air Force's No. 17 Squadron, the Golden Arrows, and the role it played during the historic war. Inspired by real events, Operation Safed Sagar follows the squadron's perilous missions during the conflict. The 28-year-old actor also spoke about his bond with co-stars Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill, his journey from Jamshedpur to Mumbai and more.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> What was special about Operation Safed Sagar that made you want to be a part of the series?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja: </strong>Honestly, a lot of things. Firstly, when I read the script, I was so stunned by it. Getting to play a real-life hero is something anyone would want to do.</p><p>What has stayed with me, honestly, is the love from the officers, the soldiers and the pilots. The way they accepted us as civilians and granted us permission to enter the Air Force stations and shoot at these locations is something that isn't easy for anyone. So, yeah, that has stayed with me - the love I got from them.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION</strong>: We all know the broad history of the Kargil War, but was there anything you learnt while filming the series that really surprised you?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> I was one year old when the Kargil War took place. Like everyone else, I knew that we won the Kargil War, but I didn't know the details.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>What we've shown in this series is just one operation. Operation Safed Sagar has only shown one part- the story of No. 17 Squadron, the Golden Arrows. But there were a lot of squadrons and a lot of teams involved. We can't tell all the stories at once.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>So, if you're inspired just by watching this, it's not even one-fourth of the story of the Kargil War because it was also a story of the Army and the Navy. <p>&nbsp;</p><p>What really surprised me was the teamwork and the unity behind it. The small details, the number of calculations the pilots had to make before a MIG flies or before a bomb is dropped - we, as civilians, had no clue about all of this.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Everyone had given up their sleep and peace at that time. There were sleepless nights for the soldiers and the pilots, and they were still working to protect our nation. Because for them, the whole of India is their family. So they go by that motto.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> What was the most challenging part of the shoot for you, emotionally or physically?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> My character's arc is emotionally very present in the show. His emotional arc is very different because I am stuck between two things - my love and the love for my country.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mentally, as actors, you don't always realise what you're going through while shooting. But after a 12-hour shoot, you feel exhausted. Subconsciously, you don't even feel it, but when you go home, you realise that you've given yourself a lot of mental stress that day. So that was mentally exhausting. During the shoot, it didn't feel like that. I felt it after going home.</p><p>The biggest physical challenge was in Shinkula and Jispa, where we shot at 16,500 feet above sea level. We were shooting in minus 20 and minus 25 degrees.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>There were times when people were moving forward and, if we looked back, two or three of our people were going one by one. <p>&nbsp;</p><p>Even after acclimatisation, we found out after two or three days that the body had acclimatised. But then a local there said that it wasn't easy to even stay there for two days, and we were shooting there for 40 days. So that was difficult.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>But kudos to the crew - the light men, the spot boys and the production team. And especially the directors and the creators. They were present for every scene there. So it was a different challenge for them as well.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> The series has a big cast and you got to work with actors like Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill. What was the dynamic like on the set?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> It was very dynamic. I've read this somewhere and I believe it's true - someone who is a good human being will be a good actor. So, to become a good actor, you have to be a good human being.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>All the people I've worked with - Siddharth sir and Jimmy sir - are very, very good. They are down to earth and humble. We used to chill together and have fun together.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Jimmy sir and my conversations were mostly about diet and discipline. Siddharth is such a good gel in our group. We have fun together, and he has a very good sense of humour. So that's something I really, really love about him.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> Can you share a memorable behind-the-scenes moment from the shoot?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> I remember this one moment. If you're shooting somewhere in Mumbai, the directors might say, 'Get the car from behind' or 'Bring the car into the frame.' Here, we were doing it with helicopters. 'Bring the helicopter a little forward. Bring the helicopter back.'</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It was surreal. We were like, 'Is this actually happening?' I vividly remember that moment from the set.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> You grew up in Jamshedpur. When did you decide that you wanted to pursue acting as a career?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> I think that your city, your place, your longitude or latitude can decide what you want to be. If you have passion, you can do what you want to do. I used to jokingly say, 'I want to become an actor. I want to become an actor.' But that joke was true because I honestly enjoyed it. I had an inclination towards performing arts from the very beginning.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I used to do performances in school and stage performances and everything. So when I was around 10 or 12 years old, I had made up my mind.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> What was the biggest reality check you got after coming to Mumbai?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> I already had an idea about how much patience this industry needs. But in the beginning, I didn't get a chance to give auditions. So I didn't know how to crack that.</p><p>I thought, 'Yes, I know how to act. I'll go and get a chance to give auditions. After that, whether it happens or not, that's another story.' But to even get a chance to audition, I had to take a step back and figure out how I could get that opportunity. That was surprising.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> Is there a role you really want to do but haven't been offered yet?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> I don't want to sound like I'm bragging or boasting about myself, but as an actor, I feel, I can do anything.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I've said this before- something like a Prince Charming or a Rapunzel kind of shoot, but something like that in India, like Snow White or something. I hope that comes true.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>And comedy. I love doing comedy. So something like Bhagam Bhag, De Dana Dan and those Govinda and Kader Khan films. I'm watching those films, and I'd love to do something like that.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Madgaon Express is a very recent example. I love how Kunal Khemu — we never looked at him as a director, but he has such a great vision as a director. The film also did so well. I'd love to do something like that.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>WION:</strong> What is Mihir like when there is no camera around?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Mihir Ahuja:</strong> A fun person. I think I'm an ambivert. Not an introvert, but somewhere in the middle. Operation Safed Sagar, which was released earlier this month, brings one of the lesser-known chapters of the 1999 Kargil War to audiences. Alongside Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill and Abhay Verma, the Netflix series also stars Mihir Ahuja as Flying Officer C.H. Bal Reddy, aka Baldy, one of the young officers navigating the challenges of war while balancing his personal life. WION: What was special about Operation Safed Sagar that made you want to be a part of the series? Mihir Ahuja: Honestly, a lot of things. Firstly, when I read the script, I was so stunned by it. Getting to play a real-life hero is something anyone would want to do. What has stayed with me, honestly, is the love from the officers, the soldiers and the pilots. The way they accepted us as civilians and granted us permission to enter the Air Force stations and shoot at these locations is something that isn't easy for anyone. So, yeah, that has stayed with me - the love I got from them. WION: We all know the broad history of the Kargil War, but was there anything you learnt while filming the series that really surprised you? Mihir Ahuja: I was one year old when the Kargil War took place. Like everyone else, I knew that we won the Kargil War, but I didn't know the details. What we've shown in this series is just one operation. Operation Safed Sagar has only shown one part- the story of No. 17 Squadron, the Golden Arrows. But there were a lot of squadrons and a lot of teams involved. We can't tell all the stories at once. So, if you're inspired just by watching this, it's not even one-fourth of the story of the Kargil War because it was also a story of the Army and the Navy. It was very, very vast, and we won it. <p>To this, Siddharth had tweeted, "Subtle cock champion of the world Thank God we have protectors of India (sic)." This, led to a widespread criticism of the actor for his usage of words on the social media platform; with&nbsp;National Commission for Women (NCW) urging the&nbsp;DGP Maharashtra to take strict action.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Has Rang De Basanti been well-received?” he had asked me curiously, from down South. “I’m glad. We all worked hard on it, but specially Rakeysh Mehra and Aamir Khan. I was with the project for just six months. But they nurtured it together for three years.”</p>

<p>“But of course, I’m open to good offers. The only problem,” he revealed shyly after the release of 'Rang De Basanti',&nbsp;“is that I’m very picky. In five years I’ve done only five films. I like to choose my roles carefully. There’s no point in doing work that makes you unhappy. At the end of the day, you’ve to look yourself in the eye.”</p>

<p>Such …err… cocky conviction for an actor who, at that point of time, had been in the Tamil blockbuster 'Boys' (2003), and the Telugu hit, 'Nuvvostanante Nenodannatana' (2004). Siddharth was apparently being offered a fee close to Rs 2 crore! But he wasn’t talking about his price, let alone doing the avalanche of films being offered to him.</p>

<p>In an interview he did with me in &nbsp;2017, Siddharth declared, “It takes time to make films that satisfy me at the stage I’m in. I’d rather stay home or do something else than go to work on something I don’t enjoy. Not getting better work isn’t an excuse I can use any longer. I’ve worked on making things happen that wouldn’t have happened otherwise."&nbsp;<br />
What prompted him to take on 'Rang De Basanti'- his first Hindi film? “Interestingly, I was actually steering clear of industries other than Telugu when Mehra’s office called. I was very non-committal. They sent me a bound script, and that’s when things really took off. The moment I read it, I knew this was not a film to reject. In two days, I was a part of 'Rang De Basanti'. I was moved by the script, and felt Mehra was definitely on to something.”</p>

<p>Wasn’t he &nbsp; deterred by the fact that it was an ensemble piece, and the fact that Aamir would get centrestage? &nbsp;“I cannot possibly explain how exciting it is to hear the word ensemble piece with respect to Indian cinema. The most exciting aspect of RDB at the script stage was this very ambitiously equanimous treatment of all the protagonists. The reason I believed it could be pulled off was that Aamir was a part of it. Also, there is no centrestage in RDB. It’s a huge stage, and all of us get to run around, just doing our own thing! It always hurt me when people said unfair, accusatory things about Aamir and his attitude towards his coactors’ roles. RDB should go a long way in rubbishing these silly allegations. An individual like Aamir really does not deserve them.”</p>

<p>What was the experience of working with Rakeysh? Sid(as he’s called by his friends) had replied, &nbsp;“Mehra is at the cutting edge of two very important horizons. The first is in the realm of heartfelt Indian storytelling. Mehra is Indian, period. His food, his humour, his nostalgia, all swim in hardcore India juice. That’s why the friends in RDB jump out from the screen and bite you. They exist, all over this huge country. The second area Mehra astonishes you in is his craft. He is by far the most ambitious technical filmmaker in Indian cinema. In effect, he combines state-of-the-art film wizardry with lorry art (Horn please, ok!). As Mehra would put it, ‘stuff like that’ .”</p>

<p>&nbsp;At one time Siddharth was known as the Aamir of the South. Why such meagre amount of work? He had an answer for that too. “I am a bit of a paranoid actor. I started off as an assistant director to Mani Ratnam. The direction was passionately my ultimate dream. When I suddenly became a screen actor, I took a reality check, and promised myself to only commit to work that completely excited me. It isn’t really my fault that such projects were very few in number also, I am building a CV of serious standing. Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Prabhudeva, Rakeysh Mehra...these guys make going to work so much fun.I am a Tamil. My school education was spread over Delhi and Chennai. I did my B.Com (Hons) from KMC in Delhi Univ. I got my MBA from the S.P. Jain Institute of Management in Mumbai. Then came the assistant director stint with Mani Ratnam for a couple of years. Acting happened by chance, and the rest is a blur.”</p>

<p>&nbsp;Didn’t &nbsp;scarce work scare &nbsp;him? “Strangely, scarce work is a really welcome proposition. No work might be really frightening. I haven’t been there yet. I want to be proud of my films. It’s much better to show your kids 10 good films, than to make excuses to them about why you made 20 bad ones. Again, good and bad doesn’t reflect commercial success. I judge films on how they justify my conviction in them. It’s hugely gratifying when they do.”</p>

<p>However &nbsp;the &nbsp;tall talks didn’t translate into &nbsp;great &nbsp;offers &nbsp;of opportunities in &nbsp;Hindi cinema. Siddharth &nbsp;dismissed Bollywood as unwelcoming. &nbsp;“I’ve never put enough pressure on myself in Hindi cinema for it to be a disappointment. It’s a convenient situation where I get to come test a different audience with something interesting every few years. There is no expectation of my stardom in Hindi cinema. That is a mix of my results there as an actor and the industry’s nature of being exclusive and not particularly welcoming as a permanent workplace.”</p>

<p>He &nbsp;also expressed displeasure with the &nbsp;kind of cinema which was becoming successful in India. “Cinema is not the problem. It’s the people and the system that runs it that’s making it difficult for films to cross over and become pan-Indian winners. There is myopia, a cultural bias stemming from ignorance, and a lazy approach to classifying everything in specific templates that’s stopping filmmakers from just making films that all audiences like to see. The biggest hits in Indian cinema are not even remotely the best films being made. That should make it clear who is deciding what is being seen. As an independent producer and an actor who believes in scripts over stardom, Baahubali has no impact on our way of life. It may have an impact on big-studio pictures that get fuelled by its victory. It is an important film, and needs to be respected for its success. It’s a great achievement, but I don’t think it changes the dynamics too elaborately.</p>

<p>&nbsp;About his &nbsp; numerous link-ups &nbsp;in the &nbsp;South and in &nbsp;Mumbai Siddharth &nbsp;had &nbsp;quipped, “My mother says if rumours on my love life are to be believed, I'm the biggest Casanova ever. In 10 films I've been linked with 10 heroines. I've even been married to a couple of them and had babies.Either I am 'aashiq mizaaz' or not. I'd rather be because the image is quite helpful. I think I need to take time off to find romance in my life. Right now I see no chance to take time off."</p>

<p>Apart from acting, Siddharth is &nbsp;a &nbsp;singer as well. "I've sung two songs in Striker(his second &nbsp;Hindi film which &nbsp; bombed) &nbsp;.I've sung many No.1 singles in my south films. As long as people want to hear me sing I will."</p>

<p>After &nbsp;Rang De &nbsp;Basanti &nbsp;Siddharth bought a home in Bandra in Mumbai. He intended to shift base from Hyderabad to Mumbai for the next one year to consolidate his position in Hindi cinema."I won't have only one home. I've been living out of suitcases all my life. Now I'll be living out of bigger suitcases called home. I'll have different homes in different cities. But I'll give my best shot to Hindi films.However, I can't move to Mumbai permanently. I'm an actor. I cannot stay in one place. And why should I?"</p>

<p>Siddharth dreamt of becoming a pan-India actor."I think we keep talking about cross-over cinema in the wrong context. What about our cinema crossing over from one language and region to another? There're fabulous films being made in every part of the country.I've this very cute dream of being a pan-Indian actor. Insha Allah, in 10 years I'll have films in different languages and I'll be appreciated across the country. We need to look at Indian cinema as one entity before we look at global acceptance."</p>

<p>Asked why actors from the south have not been successful in Mumbai, Siddharth said: "They're two ways to answer that. The politically correct is most south Indian actors have a fan base in the south and don't need to start from scratch in Hindi cinema. When they gave me the best debut award for 'Rang De Basanti', I returned it with a very nasty scowl. Not fair. You can't call me a debutant just because I'm working in a different language. You can't give Amitabh Bachchan the best debutant award if he does a film in Bhojpuri. And if you want a cockier answer as to why south Indian actors are not successful in Hindi, at least some south actors succeeded in Hindi. No Hindi actor has succeeded in the south. We in the south get paid as much money as the guys in Bollywood, if not more. If we guys haven't made it here, you guys haven't made it there. One more thing... I have the power to commission projects down south, not here. Either I'm called honest or arrogant. I'm okay with both images. My friends and family always clip my wings. People like Karan Johar rag me about being bratty and unapproachable. But I'm not unapproachable to those I want to be close to.”</p>

<p>Actor Siddharth had courted controversy after his alleged 'sexist' remarks on Indian ace shuttler Saina Nehwal. Nehwal, a celebrated Indian badminton player, had recently expressed her concerns on Twitter after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security was breached during his visit to Punjab. Reacting to her tweet, Siddharth took a dig at the shuttler with alleged 'lewd' remarks.</p>

<p>Indian badminton player Parupalli Kashyap has called out the actor on social media following the controversy. Kashyap, who is married to Nehwal, slammed the actor for his 'disgraceful' tweet and said Siddharth should have chosen better words for criticism.</p>

<p>Kashyap took to Twitter to lash out at Siddharth and wrote - "This is upsetting for us … express ur opinion but choose better words man. I guess u thought it was cool to say it this way. #notcool #disgraceful." Kashyap and Saina had tied the knot in 2018.</p>

<p>The controversy erupted after Saina, in a tweet, condemned the security breach involving PM Narendra Modi's convoy in Punjab. The PM's convoy was blocked on a flyover due to a protest in Ferozepur following which the Prime Minister had to return without conducting his rally in the poll-bound state.</p>

<p>"No nation can claim itself to be safe if the security of its own PM gets compromised. I condemn, in the strongest words possible, the cowardly attack on PM Modi by anarchists. #BharatStandsWithModi #PMModi," Nehwal had tweeted after the security breach. Reacting to her comments, actor Siddharth triggered a massive debate with his controversial remarks.&nbsp;</p>
