<p>Kapoor who had been undergoing treatment for cancer the past 8 months took to Twitter to share his thoughts about his stay in New York&nbsp;as he wrote, "Today I complete eight months here in New York. When will l ever get home?(sic)"&nbsp;</p>

<p>A day after HBO released the first episode of season 8 of ‘Game of Thrones’, Netflix India also made some big announcement for its OTT platform users.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The streaming giant on Monday announced 10 new original films across a range of genres and subjects. With these, the total number of films that will be releasing early next year comes to 15. This includes the earlier announced titles like ‘Music Teacher’, ‘Cobalt Blue’, ‘Chopsticks’, ‘Upstarts’ and ‘Bulbul’.</p>

<p>These will be made available to Netflix users around the world by the end of 2020.</p>

<p>In a statement, Srishti Behl Arya, Director - International Original Film, India, Netflix, said, "When Netflix launched in India, we changed the way Indian audiences enjoy their films. Given our diversity, history and culture, India is home to powerful stories waiting to be told to audiences around the world. The depth of talent and vision of our creators is enabling us to create films our members will love. We want to be a home for India's finest filmmakers where their stories travel to more people than ever before.”</p>

<p>Among the new titles that have not been announced before this, ‘Ghost Stories’ will see directors Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap reunite after ‘Lust Stories’ to tell spine-chilling tales. This will be produced by Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP and Ashi Dua. Another from the same will be ‘Mrs. Serial Killer’ that is directed by Shirish Kunder and produced by his filmmaker wife Farah Khan.</p>

<p>Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment is producing ‘Class Of 83’. Directed by Atul Sabharwal, it explores the story of an upright policeman-turned-trainer whose students grapple with the complexities of honour, morals and devotion to the nation.</p>

<p>‘Guilty’, produced by Dharmatic and directed by Ruchi Narain, explores the versions of truth that emerge when a small town girl accuses the college heartthrob of rape. Speaking on the same, producer Karan Johar said, "Today a filmmaker with an interesting idea has so many avenues to connect with the audience... As a content creator, there has never been a better time to tell stories."</p>

<p>Sooni Taraporevala has helmed ‘Yeh Ballet’, produced by Roy Kapur Films. It's a story about two boys from low-income families who discover ballet and use it to escape their challenging circumstances.</p>

<p>Another is ‘House Arrest’ that is directed by Shashanka Ghosh and Samit Basu. It is the story of a man who is trapped in his own fears. He locks himself at home, only to find that while he can restrict his interaction with the world, he can't keep the world from entering his domain.</p>

<p>Abdullah, a resident of Mingora of scenic Swat district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was arrested by the Indian authorities on May 25, 2017, when he had come to witness the Beating Retreat Ceremony held every evening at the Wagah border gates.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He crossed the Zero Line after the ceremony and told the Border Security Force officials that he wanted to meet Shahrukh and Kajol.</p>

<p>He was repatriated on Wednesday through the Attari-Wagah border on the basis of an emergency travel certificate issued by the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, officials said.</p>

<p>Upon arrival at his native home, he was garlanded by his relatives, neighbours, friends and well-wishers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to local media in Swat, Abdullah said he crossed the border in a bid to meet Shahrukh and Kajol of whom he is a great fan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I was arrested by the India's Border Security Force and shifted to a police station before being sent to Central Jail Amritsar," he said.</p>

<p>"I wrote a letter to Indian Government through jail authorities for arranging a meeting with Shahrukh and Kajol but no reply was made to his request," he added.</p>

<p>Stating that his wish of meeting the duo Bollywood stars could not be fulfilled, Abdullah said that earlier he had applied for Indian visa to meet the two Bollywood stars, but the application was turned down.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Abdullah appealed to the Pakistani citizens not to enter India through illegal ways.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I will not try again to enter India through illegal way," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I arrived in Mumbai like legions of aspiring actors before me, and doubtless many more to come: with heady dreams of Bollywood stardom.</p>

<p>I have to admit that before moving to India, I had seen exactly one Bollywood film, and that was &ldquo;Dhoom 1&rdquo;, not exactly the height of cinematic achievement, I realise in retrospect, but I was hooked. I also (as mentioned in a previous post) had the dubious honour of singing &ldquo;Tere Liye&rdquo; from &ldquo;Prince&rdquo; at a Diwali Ball in graduate school. I didn&rsquo;t have the faintest idea what the lyrics meant, and (having been trained in opera in my youth) I sang it like Br&uuml;nnhilde. It was all very weird. When I learned that during my tenure in Mumbai, I&rsquo;d be living mere blocks away from the legendary Shahrukh Khan, I believe my words were &ldquo;Sharoo Who?&rdquo; (Oh the heresy! The naivet&eacute;!)</p>

<p>I&rsquo;ve been an avid thespian since I was 7 or so, chiefly acting in Shakespeare plays and musicals, so Bollywood &ndash; with its flair for melodrama, fondness for spectacle, and characters&rsquo; propensities for spontaneously bursting into elaborate song and dance routines &ndash; was a logical extension of my tastes. And once I got it into my head that I would portray the ing&eacute;nue in Amir Khan&rsquo;s next blockbuster (Dangal 2), I set about doing my homework.</p>

<p>I bought bootleg films in the local market and visited nearby movie stores to purchase boxed sets of Greatest Hits. I polled my coworkers for their all-time favourite Bollywood films and made a point of watching every movie they suggested [1]. A fellow Clinton fellow and Bollywood fanatic, the lovely Yasin Khan, and I teamed up to watch an Alia Bhatt flick &ldquo;together&rdquo; over Skype: her in Darjeeling, me in Chennai. Poor internet connections on both ends meant we had to re-sync our copies dozens of times, but we persevered.</p>

<p>One of my seminal experiences as a temporary Mumbaikar was patronising a matinee screening of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) [2] at the Maratha Mandir theatre. This particular venue has been showing DDLJ, perhaps the most iconic movie in Bollywood history, every. single. day. since its debut in 1995 [3]. When Katrina and I attended a showing one weekend morning in early February, I expected to find the theatre virtually empty &ndash; for who could possibly want to watch a film that&rsquo;s been running for 22 years at 11:30 am on a Sunday? To my enormous surprise, the balcony was absolutely packed to the gills with raucous moviegoers. Thus began one of the most absurd and electrifying crowd spectacles I&rsquo;ve ever experienced; indeed, it felt more reminiscent of a football game than a film screening.</p>

<p>When Kajol and SRK made their first appearances onscreen, the spectators erupted in cheers and wolf-whistles; they sang along with every song and recited large chunks of dialogue word-perfectly; at intermission they streamed out into the lobby for samosas and steaming cups of chai, chattering delightedly; and moments after the final epic train scene, when Kajol&rsquo;s dad utters the now iconic lines &ldquo;Ja Simran, ja, jee le apni zindagi!&rdquo; (&ldquo;Go Simran, go, live your life!&rdquo;), the whooping and hollering crowd almost instantaneously dispersed, leaving an eerily quiet balcony littered with samosa wrappers and paper chai cups in their wake. It was an experience as bizarre as it was delightful, and it ranks among my warmest Mumbai memories.</p>

<p>My first decisive step towards Inevitable Stardom was to enrol in Anupam Kher&rsquo;s evening acting course, thinking it might be a good way to hone my technique and make contacts in the industry. Alas, I quit after the third session: the course was conducted entirely in Hindi, and my language skills weren&rsquo;t nearly strong enough for me to grasp the finer aspects of the Stanislavski Method. I also didn&rsquo;t particularly relish the thought of spending three hours every evening for the next month pretending to be a snowflake&nbsp;[4].</p>

<p>I set about creating half a dozen online audition profiles and cold-emailing scores of casting directors. In time, all manner of bizarre audition notices began trickling in. At one point it seemed likely that I would be the face of India&rsquo;s leading deodorant brand (huzzah!), but sadly that particular career-making windfall never came to pass. There were several offers that offended my dignity: I turned down a chance to advertise razors since doing so required posing nearly nude. I was cast in a web-series as a stock western character with &ldquo;loose morals&rdquo; but I did not feel comfortable with the behaviors I would be required to portray, nor did I wish to perpetuate stereotypes about my race. My most persistent pursuer &ndash; who regaled me with dozens of emails and phone calls despite my repeated refusals &ndash; seemed quite desperate to find Western actresses willing to wear a revealing Mrs Claus costume at a gentleman&rsquo;s club in Delhi.</p>

<p>A few of my attempts to break into the Indian acting world came tantalisingly close to fruition. I was cast as a British publisher in an independent film and met personally with the director to review the script and discuss scheduling, but the filming dates kept getting postponed until finally, it was time for me to leave India. I was asked to make an emergency appearance at a Bandra studio to play a bit part in a Marathi serial, but the director never followed up with a specific location. I gave a screen test at Yash Raj Studios, to no avail. I was also invited to audition for the lead in a Niraj Pandey film (my big break at last??); but once again, the agent never provided audition details. Quite near the end of the fellowship, I joined the cast of a Hindi-language production of Macbeth (a ludicrously improbable confluence of so many things I adore), but ultimately work and family obligations took precedence.</p>

<p>At around the halfway point of the fellowship, I resolved to take matters into my own hands. Mumbai guidebooks will tell you that a Westerner hoping to serve as an extra on a Bollywood film set can often get &ldquo;scouted&rdquo; in certain touristy areas of town. I sipped countless cold coffees at the Leopold Caf&eacute; on Colaba Causeway, with my hair coiffed and a neat stack of resumes resting coyly on the table beside me. I repeatedly visited a hostel where tourists can sign up for same-day gigs and was told (much to my bafflement!) that all the studios in the city were &ldquo;shut for the season.&rdquo; I religiously attended theatrical performances all over Mumbai &ndash; at the Prithvi Theater, St. Andrew&rsquo;s Auditorium, the National Centre for the Performing Arts &ndash; in hopes of forging directorial contacts. I even tried to put up my own production of one of my favourite musicals, &ldquo;The Last Five Years,&rdquo; but was unable to cast a crucial role.</p>

<p>In the end &ndash; spoiler alert, dear friends! &ndash; I never &ldquo;made it&rdquo; in the way I had envisioned. I guess Bollywood stardom is just one of those bucket list items I&rsquo;ll have to consign to the failure pile, along with becoming a guzheng (Chinese zither) virtuoso and successfully knitting socks. Perhaps I am doomed to spend the rest of my film-watching days bitterly coveting all of Kalki Koechlin&rsquo;s roles. In the end, however, I have no regrets about my misadventurous foray into the Mumbai film world: after all, almost becoming a famous antiperspirant evangelist is something I can be proud of. And along the way, I gained firsthand insights into the sometimes frustrating, sometimes exhilarating&nbsp;and always the capricious world of Indian cinema.</p>

<p>But to end this post on a slightly more positive note: I haven&rsquo;t entirely given hope. Somewhere in the bowels of the Yash Raj media archives is a 30-second clip of me speaking terrible Hindi; so perhaps one day, Amir Khan will come to his senses and FINALLY cast me as the lead in a remake of Rang de Basanti.</p>

<p>I&rsquo;ll be keeping my Indian mobile phone charged just in case.</p>

<p>[3] At one point in the early 2000s (so the legend goes), the Maratha Mandir Theater decided it was time to end the daily showings of DDLJ; so the lead actor, Shahrukh Khan, simply purchased the establishment to keep his signature film running. This story is apocryphal, but fun to think about.</p>

Life on a (Bollywood) film set

<p>Back in the 1990s, when over the top action dramas, and tragic love stories ruled the box office, there was a man with unkempt hair and unconventional looks doing roles that were rejected by mainstream actors of Bollywood. A man who had a solid background in TV, and who believed in content-driven cinema.</p>

<p>For a newcomer, Shah Rukh Khan was one hell of a risk taker. From playing a young man in love with a much older woman in Maya Membsaab (it featured a nude scene as well- his first and last onscreen), to an obsessed lover in Darr, to a vengeful man in Baazigar- the actor took calculated risks and did roles that most actors would think twice before saying a &#39;yes&#39;.</p>

From sticking to tried and tested formulas, to backing big-budget masala entertainers, Khan&#39;s films lacked the quality that it had once possessed. Sure, all these films did well at the Box Office and earned the famed Rs 100 crores even, but actor&#39;s instinct perhaps took a step back while the producer, the star took over.</p>

<p>Critics were soon to write him off. There were new faces in the industry, who were willing to take bigger risks, roles that SRK would have done earlier during his initial years in the film industry. And SRK trudged along doing cringe-worthy action comedies, making a caricature of films, characters that he himself was part of, that was etched in people&#39;s memory as iconic.</p>

<p>Fans, including me, patiently waited for Khan to create magic once again on screen. The star enthralled, thrilled us with historic, but somewhere the heart yearned for SRK to take up roles that no one could ever do, or can do.</p>

<p>The past year or two has seen SRK finally taking that much-needed leap of faith. From producing films that may not be conventionally masala films like Dear Zindagi to being part of out and out commercial films like Raees where he played an anti-hero with absolute ease, Khan once again reinstated our faith in him and his choice of cinema.</p>

Anja Kovacs who directs The Internet Democracy Project in India focuses on the Internet and human rights issues. The movement discusses the interplay of issues that most of us choose to ignore, of a state of constant surveillance, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/data-privacy-in-modern-day-context-11906">data privacy issues&nbsp;</a>and government control of access and usage of the Internet.</p>

<p>She says, &quot;India is not an exceptional situation but because it&rsquo;s a diverse country--contradictions and inequalities are visible here. Challenges are more in your face here. Context is more visible.&quot;&nbsp;<br />
&nbsp;<br />
In this context, she talks about how surveillance functions. She says, &ldquo;The way it actually works is that somebody is watching you but what it essentially aims to do, is to police norms. Those who set these norms are often the ones who are watching and they decide how those who are being watched should behave. The thing about norms is that people say that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear but all of this would be on the wrong side of the norm at some point. In the case of Shahrukh Khan, the information about him was denuded in such a way that the data points that did show up flagged him as a potential threat, even if he had not done anything.&rdquo;</p>

Anja adds, &ldquo;They won&rsquo;t go and check what I am talking about but if I talk about terrorism too often, and I am connected to other people who are talking about terrorism then at some point they might start looking into my profile. For example, there has been a case in New York where a family found the US government joint terrorism task force at its doorstep because they had been googling the phrases &#39;pressure cooker bomb&#39; and &#39;backpack&#39;. The law enforcement agencies picked up on a white middle-class American family of parents and one small kid for googling those phrases. For the agencies, this flashed as an indication that they were likely to be making a bomb. Imagine the US police force wearing black suits entering a private property only to find nothing.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
&ldquo;This happens in a corporate scenario as well but the consequences aren&rsquo;t the same. Facebook cannot throw you in jail but they along with other corporations are trying to shape your behaviour in insidious ways, to try and get us to do certain things. That&#39;s why at one point last year; Facebook had announced that they are tweaking their algorithms, as people are not sharing enough personal updates. We don&#39;t know whether they were successful in getting people to share but we do know that Facebook wanted people to share more, as they wanted to do something.</p>

<p>But not all is negative in this forever connected world. Surveillance vests power in the watcher and using this, the dynamics can change with different actors at play. She narrates how some slum colonies in Delhi where riots happened used surveillance as a tool for their benefit. The community itself bought CCTV cameras because they got fed up with the police arresting boys from the neighbourhood and blaming them for riots while according to the locals, the actual violence was committed by people outside of the community. She says, &ldquo;They wanted to be in a situation where they can provide proof in future instances, so they reversed the gaze.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

<p>While surveillance continues at every level, be it in the workplace or public spaces; the kind that government indulges in online, is always riskier. The government of any country has the right to keep a check but it &ldquo;ideally should happen only after the State has a suspicion on a person of a crime or any such affiliation&rdquo;. In earlier times, the system didn&rsquo;t necessarily work but &ldquo;at least in theory there were some checks and balances that didn&rsquo;t give enormous power to those doing the watching&rdquo;.<br />

Anja adds, &ldquo;It means that as a society we have less and less control over setting the norms because somebody has set the norm and if we behave out of it, we will be penalised. We are not only just expecting it to happen but are more conscious and aware of our surroundings--how to behave in public spaces, what to say on social media, what data to pull out and etc.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>How Open is the Internet?</strong><br />

A part of a movement that aims to make the<a href="http://www.wionews.com/science-tech/curb-on-online-speech-threat-to-open-internet-says-international-report-892">&nbsp;Internet free and a democratic space for all</a>, Anja explains that there is also something called nudging in public policy. Facebook also does nudging through tweaks to the algorithms so that they can incentivise you to do particular things.&nbsp;<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Similarly, the Planning Commission of India, Niti Aayog also has a nudging unit now. She says, &ldquo;What they want to do is to use data of popular government schemes and tweak them slightly so that more&nbsp;people can benefit from the policies. So nudging can be used for positive means as well but you can easily use it for negative purposes.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
&quot;There is no idea of what is being done with our data and who keeps a check. So it&rsquo;s not just the traditional form of surveillance where they are watching people to catch them when they do something wrong but it&rsquo;s really also about the insidious ways in which they are shaping the society, shaping people to do stuff without them knowing. As citizens, that&rsquo;s a problem.&rdquo;<br />
&nbsp;<br />
While surveillance is an issue that needs urgent attention and scope for active and open discussions, there is also a big question around how open the Internet really is?<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Anja simply answers that it depends on ways on how you use the Internet. She says, &ldquo;There are still some ways of using the Internet that is much more decentralised where you have more control on your data but it&rsquo;s a little bit more complex. There&rsquo;s a reason why so many of us ended up on platforms like Facebook and Twitter as they made sharing of content so easy. But it&rsquo;s true that there has been a shift to more and more centralisation on the Internet even though the technology remains decentralised.&rdquo;<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />
She emphasises on focusing on how these big companies are trying to escape regulations everywhere and how they are able to become so big without anybody questioning them. She adds, &ldquo;Even Microsoft was put into antitrust regulations in the late 90&rsquo;s because they had bundled Explorer in every system. Explorer is still installed in every Windows system but we now have the choice of using or not using it. Managing a very strong presence in browsers they had left users with no option. People complained that Microsoft was forcing them to use their own ecosystems in too many ways. The reason&nbsp;as to why many use Firefox or Chrome&nbsp;instead of Explorer is as a result of that.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>Cyber Security&nbsp;</strong><br />

When online we are usually privy to the eyes of many, even after checks and balances have been put in place. This concern gives fodder to cyber security, a term that is often used when talking about online safety for the weak and vulnerable.</p>

<p>Anja, however, is not pleased with the existing discourse on cyber security. She says, &ldquo;The way it is present now--don&rsquo;t do this, don&rsquo;t do that is not helpful and it starts to become more like what we see in the offline space. Don&rsquo;t wear this when you are out, don&rsquo;t be out in the night etc., whereas if we want to make the Internet a safe place this is not the right approach. It&rsquo;s good to be conscious of what you are sharing, who you are sharing it with. You have to be smart. But there is no one-size-fits-all approach and currently, that is what it sounds like. We have to learn basics of risk assessment, to think about what are the threats in my life, actors that I should be worried about.</p>

That's why at one point last year; Facebook had announced that they are tweaking their algorithms, as people are not sharing enough personal updates. We don't know whether they were successful in getting people to share but we do know that Facebook wanted people to share more, as they wanted to do something. Facebook cannot throw you in jail but they along with other corporations are trying to shape your behaviour in insidious ways × “It's dangerous to see what they can do with the algorithms, like how they use it to drive political campaigns during elections and move towards targeted campaigns. Surveillance vests power in the watcher and using this, the dynamics can change with different actors at play. She narrates how some slum colonies in Delhi where riots happened used surveillance as a tool for their benefit. The community itself bought CCTV cameras because they got fed up with the police arresting boys from the neighbourhood and blaming them for riots while according to the locals, the actual violence was committed by people outside of the community. She says, “They wanted to be in a situation where they can provide proof in future instances, so they reversed the gaze.” While surveillance continues at every level, be it in the workplace or public spaces; the kind that government indulges in online, is always riskier. The government of any country has the right to keep a check but it “ideally should happen only after the State has a suspicion on a person of a crime or any such affiliation”. In earlier times, the system didn’t necessarily work but “at least in theory there were some checks and balances that didn’t give enormous power to those doing the watching”. Anja adds, “It means that as a society we have less and less control over setting the norms because somebody has set the norm and if we behave out of it, we will be penalised. A part of a movement that aims to make the Internet free and a democratic space for all, Anja explains that there is also something called nudging in public policy. She says, “What they want to do is to use data of popular government schemes and tweak them slightly so that more people can benefit from the policies. So nudging can be used for positive means as well but you can easily use it for negative purposes. "There is no idea of what is being done with our data and who keeps a check. So it’s not just the traditional form of surveillance where they are watching people to catch them when they do something wrong but it’s really also about the insidious ways in which they are shaping the society, shaping people to do stuff without them knowing. As citizens, that’s a problem.” While surveillance is an issue that needs urgent attention and scope for active and open discussions, there is also a big question around how open the Internet really is? Anja simply answers that it depends on ways on how you use the Internet. She says, “There are still some ways of using the Internet that is much more decentralised where you have more control on your data but it’s a little bit more complex. There’s a reason why so many of us ended up on platforms like Facebook and Twitter as they made sharing of content so easy. But it’s true that there has been a shift to more and more centralisation on the Internet even though the technology remains decentralised.” She emphasises on focusing on how these big companies are trying to escape regulations everywhere and how they are able to become so big without anybody questioning them. She adds, “Even Microsoft was put into antitrust regulations in the late 90’s because they had bundled Explorer in every system. Explorer is still installed in every Windows system but we now have the choice of using or not using it. Managing a very strong presence in browsers they had left users with no option. People complained that Microsoft was forcing them to use their own ecosystems in too many ways. The reason as to why many use Firefox or Chrome instead of Explorer is as a result of that.” Cyber Security When online we are usually privy to the eyes of many, even after checks and balances have been put in place. This concern gives fodder to cyber security, a term that is often used when talking about online safety for the weak and vulnerable. Also Read: Are we going to lose our jobs to robots? Anja, however, is not pleased with the existing discourse on cyber security. She says, “The way it is present now--don’t do this, don’t do that is not helpful and it starts to become more like what we see in the offline space. Don’t wear this when you are out, don’t be out in the night etc., whereas if we want to make the Internet a safe place this is not the right approach. It’s good to be conscious of what you are sharing, who you are sharing it with. You have to be smart. But there is no one-size-fits-all approach and currently, that is what it sounds like. We have to learn basics of risk assessment, to think about what are the threats in my life, actors that I should be worried about. National Cyber Security Policy 2013 (Source: Internet Democracy Project) (WION) × “We have seen in many accounts that parents are complaining about how their children have no sense of privacy and they also complain about children not sharing enough with them. So, clearly the children have a sense of privacy but who they see as threat actors while who their parents think are threat actors are completely different. As children, they see their parents as threat actors and stop sharing information with them. Parents think random strangers are threat actors.” This also emboldens the fact that people must understand the consequences of what they do online and take informed decisions. Lurking dangers of the new-age technology are glaring and it is upon us to make informed choices, to completely avoid or at least diminish the loss value attached to any attack via the Internet. Starting in 2011, The Internet Democracy Project has been focusing on the Internet and human rights issues. Their focus is on bringing together the domain of technology with ideas of democracy and social justice. However, in a world where authoritarian tendencies trump democratic values and promises of social justice are yet to be realised, it is a still a long road before misuses of technology can be stopped by brining in more accountability in the surveillance system. Shah Rukh Khan's new movie: Jab Harry Met Sejal

<p>Brad Pitt told Indian actor&nbsp;Shah Rukh Khan&nbsp;that&nbsp;he doesn&#39;t have the moves to star in Bollywood films as he promoted his new movie &quot;War Machine&quot; in Mumbai on Wednesday.</p>
