In a formal disclosure, the bank said its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and CERT-In alerted it on 16 October about data suspected to be linked to SBI customers appearing on the dark web. An initial review of roughly 375,000 records found online flagged 3,897 that contained personally identifiable information. The details, as per the bank, include Personally Identifiable Information (PII) like mobile numbers, dates of birth, names, gender, email addresses, residential addresses, branch and CIF identifiers, lead IDs, and metadata tied to loan and lead records.This comes as a hacker group which calls itself ‘Siriusim’ claimed to have gained access to 3.8 lakh data entries, including customer personal data.Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/imf-world-economic-outlook-10-economies-to-watch-for-growth-in-fy27-and-fy28-where-does-india-stand-1791868386918">IMF World Economic Outlook: 10 economies to watch for growth in FY27 and FY28 - Where does India stand?</a><figure class="image"><img src="https://cdn3.wionews.com/prod/wion/images/2026/20261021/image-1792562538929.jpeg"></figure><h2>What this means for your money</h2>The bank, which is India's largest lender, said customers' money and banking services are safe but urged caution against phishing. State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest lender by assets, is preparing to raise up to ₹25,000 crore ($2.9 billion) through a share sale to institutional investors, a move that could make it the largest such deal in the country’s history. According to media reports based on information from sources familiar with the matter, the Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) could launch as early as next week, pending final approvals. If successful, this will surpass the ₹22,560 crore ($2.7 billion) share sale by Coal India Ltd. in 2015, which currently holds the record for the largest QIP in the country.<h2>Strengthening the balance sheet and loan growth</h2>The funds raised will be used to bolster SBI’s balance sheet, support its loan growth, and fulfil regulatory capital requirements. This marks the first time since 2017 that the state-owned lender, majority-controlled by the Indian government, has tapped the equity market for funds. The decision to pursue a QIP was approved by the bank’s board in May.The share sale comes at a crucial time as SBI continues to expand its operations amid a competitive banking landscape and ongoing economic challenges. As part of the process, the bank has appointed six investment banks to manage the transaction, including global players like Citigroup Inc. and HSBC Holdings Plc, along with domestic firms such as ICICI Securities Ltd. and Kotak Investment Banking.While the plans are still subject to change, the upcoming QIP, if fully subscribed, will significantly enhance SBI’s ability to fund its loan book and meet the increasing demand for credit in India's growing economy. SBI did not immediately respond to queries regarding the timeline or further details of the transaction.

SBI to launch record-breaking share sale of $2.9 billion

The State Bank of India (SBI) has branded Reliance Communications' loan account as "fraud" without hearing Anil Ambani, reigniting accusations of a relentless smear campaign against the former telecom tycoon by his business rivals. SBI said it had reported Anil Ambani as a fraud to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on July 1, 2025. However, in what is construed as a misuse of its powers, it issued the order without providing Ambani a personal hearing. SBI's ex parte order cites a 2020 forensic audit alleging Rs 12,692.31 crore in fund diversions from a Rs 31,580 crore loan dating back to 2016. These orders&nbsp;are issued in emergencies. However, the forensic audit report was available with SBI for 5 years, which means there was no emergency.&nbsp;The bank's action echoes a failed attempt by Canara Bank in November 2024, which was stayed by the Bombay High Court in February 2025 for procedural violations. Ambani’s legal team has slammed SBI’s move as a “gross violation” of natural justice, RBI guidelines, and judicial precedents, pointing to a pattern of regulatory overreach that consistently overshadows positive developments in Ambani’s business ventures.&nbsp;The SBI’s fraud classification is marred by procedural flaws, including the withholding of the full forensic audit report and reliance on a December 2023 show-cause notice (SCN) issued under outdated RBI guidelines, superseded by revised directives in July 2024. Ambani’s counsel argues that SBI’s failure to respond to communications for nearly a year led him to believe the matter was resolved, and the selective targeting of Ambani—while SCNs against other non-executive directors were withdrawn—suggests a vendetta possibly fueled by corporate rivalries. This is not an isolated incident; in May 2025, Reliance Power faced allegations of submitting fake SBI guarantees for a government tender, leading to a temporary blacklisting, though Ambani avoided personal liability. Similarly, in August 2024, SEBI banned Ambani and 24 entities from the stock market over alleged fund diversion at Reliance Home Finance, a decision currently under appeal. These incidents, often amplified by media, coincide with positive milestones, such as Reliance Power’s debt-free status and a joint venture with a US defense contractor in July 2025, fueling speculation of a coordinated effort to tarnish Ambani’s legacy. The pattern of regulatory and legal actions against Ambani is striking, particularly as they often emerge during periods of business recovery. For instance, the SEBI ban followed Reliance Infrastructure’s reported net worth recovery to ₹33,000 crore, while SBI’s fraud tag came amid Reliance Power’s expansion into clean energy and defense, including a deal to supply artillery shells to a German firm. The 2020 UK bankruptcy declaration, where Ambani claimed to have “nothing meaningful” in personal wealth, garnered global headlines, yet subsequent court reliefs, like the Delhi High Court’s 2021 status quo order on RCom’s fraud classifications, received less attention. Critics argue that these actions, often stalled by courts for procedural lapses—as seen in the Bombay High Court’s rebuke of Canara Bank’s “cut, copy, paste” fraud order—reflect a broader agenda, possibly linked to Ambani’s past rivalry. SBI’s latest move also disregards protections under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), particularly Section 32A, which shields companies under the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) from pre-insolvency liabilities once a resolution plan is approved. RCom, managed by a Resolution Professional since May 2018 with a debt of ₹48,216 crore as of March 2025, awaits National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approval for its resolution plan. Yet, SBI persists in targeting Ambani for pre-CIRP loans, a move critics say undermines the IBC framework and risks derailing RCom’s revival. This echoes earlier controversies, such as the 2018 allegations of fund diversion at Reliance Naval and Engineering, which led to insolvency proceedings but no conclusive evidence against Ambani personally. The recurring cycle of high-profile accusations, followed by judicial stays or dismissals, as seen in the Canara Bank case and SEBI’s ongoing appeal, underscores a pattern of regulatory aggression that legal experts predict will face another judicial rebuke, further exposing the apparent witch hunt against Anil Ambani. Pattern of Smear Campaign: The SBI fraud tag, SEBI ban, and Reliance Power tender controversy illustrate a pattern where regulatory actions coincide with Ambani’s business recovery efforts, such as Reliance Power’s debt-free status and defense contracts. These incidents, often amplified by the media, are frequently stalled by courts due to procedural flaws. Procedural Violations: SBI’s ex-parte order, like Canara Bank’s failed fraud tag, violates RBI’s Master Directions on Frauds and principles of natural justice by denying Ambani a hearing and full audit disclosure. The SEBI ban also faces challenges for similar reasons. Selective Targeting: SBI’s withdrawal of SCNs against other RCom directors while pursuing Ambani, despite his non-executive role, mirrors the selective scrutiny in the Reliance Power tender case, where only the SECI chief faced consequences. Judicial Precedents: The Bombay High Court’s February 2025 stay on Canara Bank’s fraud tag and the Delhi High Court’s 2021 order highlight a judiciary critical of banks’ overreach. The SEBI ban’s appeal and SBI’s order are likely to follow suit. Corporate Rivalry: While speculative, the timing of actions against Ambani, are often linked to his rivalry. IBC Protections: SBI’s pursuit of pre-CIRP liabilities disregards IBC Section 32A, aligning with criticisms of banks undermining insolvency processes, as seen in Reliance Naval’s case.&nbsp;This isn't an isolated incident. The 2024 SEBI ban and 2025 Reliance Power tender controversy, alongside earlier issues like Reliance Naval’s insolvency, reflect a consistent pattern of regulatory scrutiny that often lacks conclusive evidence against Ambani. However, they are often successful at generating negative publicity against the businessman.

IBC Protections: SBI’s pursuit of pre-CIRP liabilities disregards IBC Section 32A, aligning with criticisms of banks undermining insolvency processes, as seen in Reliance Naval’s case. This isn't an isolated incident.

The bank's action echoes a failed attempt by Canara Bank in November 2024, which was stayed by the Bombay High Court in February 2025 for procedural violations.

Starting today, withdrawing cash from ATMs&mdash;or even just checking your balance&mdash;might cost you more. The Reserve Bank of India&rsquo;s (RBI) revised guidelines have come into effect from May 1, 2025, increasing the maximum fees banks can charge customers once they exhaust their monthly quota of free ATM transactions.
Whether it&rsquo;s a cash withdrawal, PIN change, or mini statement, every extra swipe beyond your free limit could now pinch your pocket a bit harder.
<h2 class="x_elementToProof">What&rsquo;s changing from May 1?</h2>
The RBI&rsquo;s updated circular allows banks to hike charges for ATM usage beyond the free limit. The fee cap has increased from ₹21 to ₹23 per transaction (plus GST), applicable on both financial (like cash withdrawals) and non-financial (like balance checks or PIN changes) transactions. These new rates are applicable across all banks and ATM operators.
So whether you&rsquo;re pulling out cash for groceries or just checking your balance after online shopping, expect to pay ₹2 more per extra transaction if you&rsquo;ve crossed your monthly limit.
<h2>How many free ATM transactions do you still get?</h2>
While the charges have gone up, the RBI has not changed the number of free monthly transactions:
<ul>
<li>At your own bank&rsquo;s ATMs: 5 free transactions/month (both financial and non-financial).</li>
<li>At other banks&rsquo; ATMs:</li>
<ul>
<li>Metro cities: 3 free transactions/month.</li>
<li>Non-metro cities: 5 free transactions/month.</li>
</ul>
</ul>
These limits include both types of transactions.
<h2 class="x_elementToProof">Why have ATM charges been increased?</h2>
According to the RBI, the revision aims to align customer charges with rising costs&mdash;such as ATM security, cash handling, maintenance, and software upgrades. Banks and ATM operators have long been lobbying for a hike, citing higher operating expenses.
The move is also intended to promote digital payments, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where mobile-based and MicroATM services are gaining traction.
<h2 class="x_elementToProof">Banks have already notified customers &ndash; Here&rsquo;s what&rsquo;s changing</h2>
Several leading banks have revised their ATM fee structures effective May 1, 2025. This includes HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB), IndusInd Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Customers at these banks will now pay more for both financial and non-financial ATM transactions once they exhaust their monthly free limits.
<ul>
<li>HDFC Bank has raised its post-limit fee from ₹21 to ₹23 (plus GST) for all transactions.</li>
<li>PNB will charge ₹23 for financial and ₹11 for non-financial transactions (earlier ₹21 and ₹10 respectively); changes come into effect from May 9.</li>
<li>IndusInd Bank has adopted a flat ₹23 (plus GST) fee beyond the free quota.</li>
<li>Kotak Mahindra Bank now charges ₹23 for financial transactions (up from ₹21) and ₹10 for non-financial ones (up from ₹8.5).</li>
</ul>
Meanwhile, State Bank of India (SBI) revised its ATM fee structure earlier this year on February 1, 2025. It also standardized free usage across metro and non-metro areas&mdash;5 free transactions at SBI ATMs and 10 at other bank ATMs for most customers. Beyond this:
<ul>
<li>Financial transactions cost ₹15 at SBI ATMs and ₹17 at other bank ATMs.</li>
<li>Non-financial transactions are free at SBI ATMs, but ₹10 per transaction at other banks&rsquo; ATMs.</li>
</ul>

<h2>What&rsquo;s the interchange fee&mdash;and why it matters</h2>
The interchange fee is the charge your bank pays to the bank that owns the ATM you use. For instance, if you use an HDFC debit card at an SBI ATM, HDFC pays SBI. While customers don&rsquo;t pay this directly, it influences what banks charge after the free limit.
As of now, interchange fees remain unchanged:
<ul>
<li>₹17 for financial transactions</li>
<li>₹6 for non-financial transactions</li>
</ul>
However, this may be reviewed by ATM networks or the RBI in the future.
<h2 class="x_elementToProof">Are CRM machines affected too?</h2>
Yes, but with a catch. Cash deposits at Cash Recycler Machines (CRMs) remain free. However, if you withdraw money or check your balance at a CRM after crossing your free limit, the ₹23 + GST charge applies&mdash;just as it would at a regular ATM.

India: Election Commission publishes electoral bond data

India's Top Court while hearing the Electoral bonds case today said that it wanted all information related to electoral bonds which are in SBI's possession to be disclosed. Watch to know more!

India Elections: Who gave the most to BJP, Congress & TMC?

The Election Commission has made data available that includes numbers to link donors with the political parties to which they made contributions.

The State Bank of India provided the information to the Commission earlier today (March 21) in compliance with the ruling of the Supreme Court.

The poll panel published the two lists that the bank had previously provided to the Election Commission on its website on March 14.

In compliance with a Supreme Court&nbsp;order, the State Bank of India (SBI) provided the Election Commission of India (ECI) with all important information regarding the electoral bonds on Thursday (Mar 21), including their unique numbers.

On March 18, the Supreme Court had ordered the SBI&nbsp;to give complete disclosure of all information pertaining to the electoral bonds under its custody.

Five things that will now be known about electoral bonds are: the name of the party that encashed the bond, its denomination and unique number, the name of the purchaser, the last four digits of the political parties' bank account number and the denomination and quantity of bonds encashed.

Earlier, the SBI had submitted only the details of the purchasers, the total amount and the fund the political parties received, separately.

"The complete bank account numbers and KYC details of the political parties are not being made public as it may compromise the security of the account (cyber security)," the SBI said in its affidavit to the Supreme Court.

"Similarly, KYC details of purchasers are also not being made public for security reasons, apart from the fact that such information of not fed/collated in the system. However, they are not necessary for identifying the political parties."

The bank chairman informed the Supreme Court that, except from the KYC information and the full account numbers, it no longer possesses any secret information about electoral bonds.

The distinct alphanumeric digits aid in identifying the bond and the recipient party.

The Supreme Court pointed out that SBI had not complied fully with the top court's decision from March 11 requiring SBI to reveal all electoral bond details by withholding this number.

<h2>Electoral Bonds data dump so far: Key points</h2>

The Election Commission has made data available that includes numbers to link donors with the political parties to which they made contributions. The State Bank of India provided the information to the Commission earlier today (March 21) in compliance with the ruling of the Supreme Court. The poll panel published the two lists that the bank had previously provided to the Election Commission on its website on March 14. In compliance with a Supreme Court order, the State Bank of India (SBI) provided the Election Commission of India (ECI) with all important information regarding the electoral bonds on Thursday (Mar 21), including their unique numbers. On March 18, the Supreme Court had ordered the SBI to give complete disclosure of all information pertaining to the electoral bonds under its custody. Also read: 'Can't be selective': Supreme Court directs SBI to share details of all electoral bonds by March 21 "The complete bank account numbers and KYC details of the political parties are not being made public as it may compromise the security of the account (cyber security)," the SBI said in its affidavit to the Supreme Court. "Similarly, KYC details of purchasers are also not being made public for security reasons, apart from the fact that such information of not fed/collated in the system. However, they are not necessary for identifying the political parties." The bank chairman informed the Supreme Court that, except from the KYC information and the full account numbers, it no longer possesses any secret information about electoral bonds. The distinct alphanumeric digits aid in identifying the bond and the recipient party. The Supreme Court pointed out that SBI had not complied fully with the top court's decision from March 11 requiring SBI to reveal all electoral bond details by withholding this number. Electoral Bonds data dump so far: Key points 1. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party leads in the total amount of funds received through electoral bonds in 2018. The party's cumulative electoral bond amount sums up to ₹6986.5 crore or about $842 million. 2. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress received ₹1,397 crore ($168.5 mn) in electoral bonds followed by the Congress with ₹1,334 crore (or $160.9mn), and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi with ₹1,322 crore ($159 mn). 3. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal (BJD) received ₹944.5 crore ($113.8mn), followed by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam at ₹656.5 crore ($79.1 mn), and YSR Congress of Andhra Pradesh at nearly ₹442.8 crore ($53.4 mn). 4. The beneficiaries of about ₹859 crore ($103.6mn) worth of bonds purchased by Future Gaming remain undisclosed. This is reportedly due to incomplete donor information from most political parties. 5. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party did not provide a consolidated donation figure. However, the State Bank of India's records indicate it received ₹65.45 crore ($7.8 mn). The total sum received by the AAP stands at ₹69 crore ($8.32mn) after accounting for another ₹3.55 crore ($428,228) post-filing with the Election Commission. 6. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) redeemed bonds totalling ₹181.35 crore ($21.83mn), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) ₹130.38 crore ($15.68mn), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) ₹56 crore ($6.75 mn), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ₹50.51 crore ($6.09mn), Sikkim Krantikari Morcha ₹15.5 crore ($1.86mn), Samajwadi Party (SP) ₹14.05 crore ($1.69 mn), Akali Dal ₹7.26 crore ($875,759), AIADMK ₹6.05 crore ($729,798), National Conference (NC) ₹50 lakh ($60,313) from the Bharti Group, and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) ₹50 lakh (($60,313). In a landmark verdict last month, the Supreme Court declared the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional, citing a violation of citizens' right to information. The SBI had been specifically directed to disclose the data by March 6, with the Election Commission slated to make this information public by March 13.

Electoral Bonds: SBI submits all details to the Election Commission of India

Following the Supreme Court's directives, the State Bank of India (SBI) has provided detailed information regarding the purchase and redemption of electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The submission, made in response to the apex court's orders, includes crucial details such as the names of bond purchasers, dates of purchase, denominations, as well as information on political parties redeeming the bonds.

A report by the Indian Express cited an affidavit submitted by the SBI chairman.

Based on that, the bank has meticulously documented the transactional data concerning electoral bonds, ensuring compliance with the court's directives.

The information encompassed records of bond purchases and redemptions spanning from April 12, 2019, to February 15, 2024.

However, an oversight led to the inclusion of bonds purchased from April 1, 2019, in the data set, resulting in a total of 22,217 bonds being accounted for during this period.

This comprehensive dataset was handed over to the ECI in a password-protected format.

Despite the thorough submission, questions loom over the omission of the unique alphanumeric code associated with each electoral bond.

This code, plays a crucial role in mapping bond purchases to the political parties redeeming them.

The absence of this code raises concerns regarding transparency and accountability in electoral funding, as it inhibits the tracing of specific donations to their recipients.

The bank's explanation, citing the complexity of matching donor and redemption details stored in separate silos, fails to assuage these concerns.

In response to the SBI's submissions, the Supreme Court reiterated the importance of transparency and plain disclosure, emphasising that the ground for seeking an extension to disclose information does not align with the court's directives.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud's remarks underscored the necessity for straightforward compliance with the court's orders, highlighting the significance of adhering to legal mandates in matters of electoral transparency.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India is set to embark on the task of compiling and publishing the electoral bonds data provided by the SBI.

This process, expected to be completed by March 15, will involve scrutinising the data to ensure its accuracy before making it publicly accessible on the commission's website.
