Crisis in Sudan worsens, dozens of infants die due to the ongoing civil war

A Saudi Arabia-bound plane from Egypt’s Cairo burst one of its tyres while landing at the destination early on Sunday.

An EgyptAir jetliner —MS643—took off from Cairo international airport earlier in the day. However, upon landing at King Abdulaziz International Airport in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah, it blew out a tyre, the air carrier said in a statement.

The statement added that no casualties were reported.

The Boeing 738 made a safe landing on the runway and all passengers disembarked the airplane with no injuries reported, the statement said.

However, the airline did not elaborate further as to what caused the problem and said that an examination and maintenance of the plane were underway.

According to the EgyptAir website, the flight was scheduled to take off from Cairo at 9.25 pm (local time) on Saturday, but it actually departed at 10.05 pm and arrived at 1.25 am, instead of the scheduled arrival time of 11.30 pm.

<h2>EgyptAir no stranger to mishaps</h2>

EgyptAir airline came into the international spotlight in 2016&nbsp;after its plane carrying 56 passengers and 10 crew members&nbsp;crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on May 19.

EgyptAir flight MS804 was flying from Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport to Cairo International Airport when it crashed into the sea between the Greek island of Crete and northern Egypt.

Initially, the Egyptian authorities claimed that the crash occurred due to a terrorist strike, saying that traces of explosives were discovered on the victims' bodies.&nbsp;But those claims were widely debunked after an inquiry report revealed the real reason behind the crash in 2022.

The BEA, France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, in its probe found that the plane was brought down by a pilot who lit a cigarette in the cockpit and ignited a fire.

It concluded that pilot Mohamed Said Shoukair's mid-flight smoke break ignited oxygen seeping from an oxygen mask in the cockpit, resulting in a fire onboard the Airbus A320 jet.

The report further said that Egyptian pilots regularly smoked in the cockpit and the practice had not been banned by the airline at the time of the crash.

Among the dead were 40 Egyptians and 15 French nationals. The plane was also carrying two Iraqis, two Canadians and one passenger each from Algeria, Belgium, Britain, Chad, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

The plane entered service in 2003, making it relatively new for an aircraft that tends to have an operational life of 30 to 40 years.

The United States and Saudi Arabia, on Sunday (May 28) called for an extension of the seven-day ceasefire deal in Sudan, a day prior to its expiration. This comes as there was ease in heavy fighting following the implementation of the Washington and Riyadh-brokered ceasefire deal between the warring Sudanese army and the paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF).&nbsp;

<h2>US-Saudi Arabia on the extension</h2>

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia and the US-brokered talks in Jeddah led to a week-long ceasefire deal, which is set to expire at 9:45 pm (local time) Monday. During this time, the two countries have been remotely monitoring the situation in Sudan to see if both factions were adhering to the ceasefire, which has been repeatedly violated.

In a joint statement, Washington and Riyadh called on the leaders of the warring factions to “continue discussions to reach agreement on extending the ceasefire”. It added, “While imperfect, an extension nonetheless will facilitate the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people.”

<h2>Warring factions discuss possibility of an extension</h2>

The RSF said it is ready to discuss the possibility of an extension while it continues to monitor the truce, in order to “test the seriousness and commitment of the other party” and it will then decide whether to proceed with the renewal of the agreement or not. Meanwhile, the Sudanese army has also said that it was discussing the possibility of an extension, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>What is happening in Sudan?</h2>

The fighting which began over a month ago has turned the Sudanese capital city of Khartoum into a battlefield for the two warring factions, which has since spread across the nation. The conflict has also displaced over 1.3 million people. According to the United Nations’ children agency, over 700 people have been killed, out of which 190 were children, while&nbsp;6,000 others were injured.

While the US and Saudi Arabia-brokered deal brought some respite from the heavy fighting, sporadic clashes and air strikes have carried on across Sudan, as per media reports and eyewitnesses.&nbsp;

Furthermore, UN and aid groups have said that despite the truce they continued to struggle to procure bureaucratic approvals and security guarantees to transport aid and staff to Khartoum and other places.&nbsp;

According to a report by the Associated Press, residents have reported sporadic clashes and army aircraft were seen flying over the city on Sunday in parts of Omdurman.

Meanwhile, the detention of Dr. Alaa Eldin Awad Nogoud, a prominent surgeon and pro-democracy activist, in Omdurman, has sparked outrage among medical and rights groups in and outside of Sudan, as per the media report.&nbsp;

A group of armed men stormed Nogoud’s home Sunday and detained him, said Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate, adding that he has been taken to an unknown location. Sudan conflict: US, Saudi Arabia call for extension of week-long ‘imperfect’ ceasefire

According to a Bloomberg report, Saudi Arabia imported 174 000 barrels of Russian oil in April, making it the top supplier of oil and gas to Europe at the same time as the European Union's embargo on Russian oil continues. This suggests that Saudi Arabia has been importing millions of barrels of oil from Moscow while increasing its own oil supplies to Europe.

Canada and Saudi Arabia have agreed to restore full diplomatic ties and appoint new ambassadors, both countries said on Wednesday, bringing to a close a 2018 dispute that damaged relations and trade.

The decision follows discussions held between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the sidelines of the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in Bangkok in November last year, according to statements from Canada and Saudi Arabia.

The decision stems from "the desire for both sides to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect and common interests," the statements said.

<h2>What was the 2018 row?</h2>

The 2018 row pre-dated the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi later that year, which Canada and all Western countries condemned. It started when Canada's embassy in Riyadh published a tweet in Arabic urging the immediate release of women's rights activists held by Saudi Arabia.

That prompted Riyadh to recall its ambassador and bar the envoy from returning, and to institute a ban on new trade.

"Punitive trade measures will be lifted," said a Canadian government source familiar with the agreement who was not authorized to speak on the record. It is unclear what effect the dispute had on trade.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia was the biggest export market for Canada in the region in 2021, according to official data, when they totaled C$2.2 billion ($1.65 billion). Imports were $2.4 billion. Almost all Canada's imports were oil and petrochemicals. More than 80% of exports to Saudi Arabia were transportation equipment.

"Empty chairs at the end of the day don't push our interests forward, and they don't push things like human rights forward," the source added.&nbsp;

The normalization comes as the Saudi prince, known as MbS, seeks to reassert Saudi Arabia as a regional power by using his place atop an energy giant in an oil-dependent world consumed by the war in Ukraine.

China negotiates arms deal with Saudi Arabia and Egypt

Veteran oil industry analyst Paul Sankey has sounded the alarm on&nbsp;the rising&nbsp;Russian oil exports to Asia and its threat&nbsp;to Saudi Arabia's dominance in the global oil market.&nbsp;

In a recent interview with Bloomberg TV, Sankey pointed out that Saudi Arabia's price premiums were being eroded by the increasing competition from Russian oil, making it a pressing concern for the oil-rich kingdom.

Sankey expressed skepticism towards Saudi Arabia's claims that market short sellers were solely responsible for the underwhelming oil prices. Instead, he emphasised that the overall oil balance, particularly the challenge posed by Russia, should be the primary focus for the Saudis.&nbsp;

While squeezing speculators may provide short-term relief, the long-term problem lies in addressing the competition from Russia and maintaining market share, he argued.&nbsp;

"Frankly, I don't know why they're so obsessed with speculators. I mean, you can squeeze speculators on a short-term basis. But the real problem is the overall oil balance," Sankey told Bloomberg TV on Wednesday.

The Quest For Asian Domination Begins

Focusing on Russia's strategy, Sankey said that Russia has been redirecting its oil exports towards Asian markets, thereby cutting into the traditional long-term Saudi premium for selling oil to Asia. He emphasized that the impact of this competition between the two oil giants on market share and overall competition is far more significant than currently appreciated.

Sankey also pointed out that despite the seemingly good relations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, it is still being determined whether the same rapport extends to their respective oil ministers. This potential tension between the two oil giants raises concerns as they have previously coordinated production efforts.

Russia's efforts to diversify its energy exports stem from the sanctions that have&nbsp;restricted its access to European markets. Consequently, Russia has sought alternative destinations for its oil exports, with China and India accounting for approximately 90 percent of its seaborne crude shipments.&nbsp;

Moreover, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, recently hinted at the possibility of supplying 40 percent of China's energy needs, indicating a sustained reliance on the Asian market.

As the global oil landscape continues to evolve, Saudi Arabia faces a formidable challenge from Russia's expanding presence in Asia. To maintain its position as a dominant player in the oil market, Sankey told Bloomberg TV that the kingdom must find effective strategies to compete with Russia's growing influence.&nbsp;

Russia challenges Saudi Arabia's throne in Asian oil trade: Veteran analyst

The rival factions in Sudan continue to clash despite the ceasefire in the capital city of Khartoum, on Wednesday (May 24), reported Reuters citing residents. This comes amid fears that the fighting could break the fragile United States-Saudi Arabia brokered weeklong ceasefire deal. Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IMO) said that more than a million people have been displaced within the country since the fighting began over a month ago.&nbsp;

<h2>US and Saudi Arabia&nbsp; monitoring ceasefire</h2>

The weeklong ceasefire which is being monitored by the US and Saudi Arabia was off to a shaky start after witnesses since late Monday&nbsp;in the capital, Khartoum, have been reporting&nbsp;fighter jets over the city and continued fighting in some areas. Meanwhile, the observers from the two countries noted that the “fighting in Khartoum appeared to be less intense”.&nbsp;

The agreement came after the warring Sudanese army and paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had previously violated multiple ceasefire agreements. Washington and Riyadh addressing the reports said there is some indication that “both sides violated the agreement” but stressed that the efforts to deliver “lifesaving assistance” to the people of Sudan are underway.&nbsp;

<h2>'Heartbreaking': UN Human Rights chief about&nbsp;Sudan</h2>

According to recent data from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), more than 1,800 people have lost their lives since the fighting began on April 15. The conflict has also worsened the country’s humanitarian crisis as over a million people have been forced to flee their homes.&nbsp;

The IMO, on Wednesday, said 319,000 people have sought refuge in neighbouring countries out of which, over 132,000 refugees arrived in Egypt; 80,000 in Chad; and 69,000 in South Sudan. “In spite of successive ceasefires, civilians continue to be exposed to serious risk of death and injury,” said UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk.&nbsp;

He also called the situation in Sudan “heartbreaking,” at a press briefing in Geneva and went on to address the two warring generals directly and said, “General (Abdel Fattah) al-Burhan, General (Mohamed Hamdan) Dagalo, you must issue clear instructions, in no uncertain terms to all those under your command, that there is zero tolerance for sexual violence...civilians must be spared and you must stop this senseless violence now.”&nbsp;

Turk also said that his office has found at least 25 cases of sexual violence so far but believes that the real number is much higher.&nbsp;

<h2>Fighting continues with some respite</h2>

Columns of black smoke could be seen rising into the air in areas west of central Khartoum, while witnesses told Reuters, on Wednesday that there was shelling near an army camp in the southern part of the capital city.&nbsp;

In Omdurman, witnesses said that an army fighter plane had been shot down, the footage of which appeared on social media but could not independently be verified. Additionally, gunfire was heard in the Jabra neighbourhood of southern Khartoum.&nbsp;

Ali Mohammed, a resident of the Sudanese capital city, as per AFP&nbsp;said that the water supply had not been restored as of Wednesday “but at least I was able to go out and buy water for my family”.&nbsp;

Another resident, 55-year-old, Mohammed Taher, said he was finally able to go to the city’s central market “five kilometres away to buy food and return without incident”.&nbsp;

Sudan witnesses clashes amid ceasefire; more than a million people displaced due to fighting

A fall in oil prices has always been a major concern for Saudi Arabia. For long, Saudis have blamed US based short sellers, in other words, those who bet that oil prices will fall, for the volatility in oil prices. But a veteran analyst feels that saudi's biggest headache may be another oil producer - Russia.

Bangladesh has received a large-scale investment offer from Saudi Arabia because of its strong economy and stable leadership. The offer was made when the Saudi Arabian ministers for economy and planning Faisal Alibrahim and Khalid A. Al-Faliah paid a visit to prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday at her home in Doha.

Later, the crew will open the hatch to the orbiting space station, where they will conduct research and scientific experiments. Barnawi said, "Greetings from outer space, I'm here not only representing myself but representing the hopes and dreams of everyone back home, everyone in the region." "It was a great launch, a great ride, we had a lot of fun on the way up and we're really excited to get a lot of work done up here," he added. Peggy Whitson, who is a former NASA astronaut who made the voyage three times in the past added said: "We really are excited to be here." "It was a great launch, a great ride, we had a lot of fun on the way up and we're really excited to get a lot of work done up here." On Sunday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, "Congratulations to Axiom, SpaceX, and the Axiom Mission 2 crew on a successful launch! During their time aboard the International Space Station, the Ax-2 astronauts will carry out more than 20 scientific experiments, helping us better understand space radiation, weather in low-gravity conditions, and more." Nelson added, "This mission is more proof of NASA’s commitment to help our industry partners develop the next generation of space technology and support a growing commercial space economy." This is the second wholly private mission to visit the space station, following the first in April 2022. Ax-2 members will stay for roughly 10 days and conduct approximately 20 experiments. NASA is trying to seed a commercial space economy in the region of space known as "Low Earth Orbit," allowing it to focus its own energies on missions deeper into the solar system and beyond. The SpaceX rocket took off from Florida on Sunday, and the journey to the International Space Station, which orbits roughly 250 miles (400 kilometres) above the earth, took about 16 hours. Elon Musk-owned SpaceX launched four astronauts, including the first Saudi Arabian woman into space from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in the southern United States on Monday. The launch was textbook as the Falcon-9 rocket zooted off the surface with full thrust carrying the Dragon spacecraft. Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali Aqarni from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Commander Peggy Whitson and Pilot John Shoffner from the USA formed the quarter aboard the spacecraft which has been dubbed Freedom. It separated from the rocket nearly 12 minutes after the launch. “Hello from outer space! It feels amazing to be viewing Earth from this capsule,” Barnawi said after settling into orbit. Prior to the liftoff, Barnawi said her inclusion in the trip represented the dreams of the Saudi women, “I am honoured and happy to represent all the dreams and all the hopes of the people in Saudia Arabia. And also the hopes and dreams of all the women in the region.” The crew in their dragon capsule would reach the International Space Station (ISS) by Monday evening and spend over a week before making the sojourn back home with a splashdown planned off the Florida coast. The Saudi pair is the first to ride a rocket to space since a Saudi prince ravelled on board the space shuttle Discovery in 1985. In what comes as a coincidence, the duo will be greeted by an astronaut from the UAE upon their arrival at the ISS. Saudi Aramco's plans for the mega IPO of its energy-trading business have been postponed, as the state-controlled oil giant slows down preparations. The IPO, expected to be one of the world's largest, is now likely to be delayed until next year unless market conditions improve. The company earnings took a hit, with a 19% decline attributed to falling oil prices. The company reported a net income of $31.9 billion, down from $39.5 billion the previous year.

Saudi Arabia, the world biggest oil producer, grew slower in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the last quarter.

According to the latest Saudi government data, the economy grew by 3.9 percent in the first three months of 2023. In the preceding quarter (October-December 2022), the economy grew at 5.5 percent.&nbsp;

However, the Saudi government's plan to diversify its predominantly oil-based economy has got a further boost. Non-oil activities grew by 5.8 percent in the first quarter of 2023 compared to last year.&nbsp;In the same period, oil activities grew only by 1.3 percent.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia has been aiming to diversify its economy by reducing its focus on oil-related activities.

As part of Saudi Vision 2030, the country aims to diversify non-oil exports and increase its share in the non-oil GDP from 16 percent to 50 percent in 2030.&nbsp;Finance, insurance, other business services, transport and communication, non-oil manufacturing and agriculture are the key components of Saudi Arabia's push for a non-oil economy.&nbsp;

The increased push towards&nbsp;the non-oil sector is largely influenced by the volatile nature of oil as a commodity. Oil prices are prone to global economic and political volatility, as seen during the ongoing Ukraine war and global economic slowdown.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia also reported a deficit of $770 million in the first three months of 2023, as the government increased spending by nearly 30 percent, largely due to the expenditure on salaries and economic diversification projects.&nbsp;

However, higher non-oil revenues drove Saudi Arabia's income in 2023. Non-oil revenues rose by 9 percent while oil revenues fell by 3 percent in the first three months of 2023 due to lower crude prices.&nbsp;

This is in contrast to last year, when surging oil prices boosted revenue for Saudi Arabia This also led to the its first budget surplus in almost 10 years.

The budget deficit is also reflective of the International Monetary Fund's projection that the Saudi Arabian economy will grow at just 3.1 percent this year, down from 8.7 percent last year, as global crude oil prices remain below the $80 per barrel.&nbsp;

Sudan’s warring sides, early Friday (May 12) signed an agreement and committed to protecting civilians and the movement of humanitarian aid, however, have not yet agreed to a ceasefire, said the United States officials. This comes nearly a week after US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in Jeddah.&nbsp;

What have the two sides agreed to do?

A report by the news agency AFP, citing a US official involved in what has been dubbed as “pre-negotiation talks”, said that the two sides have signed the agreement on a “declaration of commitment to protect the civilians of Sudan”.&nbsp;

“We affirm our commitment to ensuring the protection of civilians at all times, including by allowing safe passage for civilians to leave areas of active hostilities on a voluntary basis in the direction of their choice,” the declaration stated. The two sides also signed a declaration that they would work towards a short-term ceasefire in further talks, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The agreement in question largely implies that both sides will let in humanitarian assistance, to allow the restoration of electricity, water and other basic services. Furthermore, the two sides will also withdraw security forces from hospitals and arrange for “respectful burial” of the dead.&nbsp;

“The two sides are quite far apart,” a US State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters. The official also said that the negotiators are working with Saudi and US mediators and set a goal of reaching a ceasefire deal in up to 10 days.&nbsp;

“This is not a ceasefire. This is an affirmation of their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly with regard to the treatment of civilians and the need to create space for humanitarians to operate,” the US official told AFP.&nbsp;

She added, “We are hopeful, cautiously, that their willingness to sign this document will create some momentum that will force them to create the space,” to bring in relief supplies. Hundreds of people have been killed due to the conflict which suddenly began on April 15 and has triggered a humanitarian crisis.

Situation in Sudan

The two sides have been fighting for nearly a month and as of Thursday, the fighting has rocked Halfaya, an entry point to the capital city of Khartoum. Meanwhile, the residents, as per Reuters, also heard warplanes circling over Khartoum and its adjoining cities of Bahri and Omdurman. However, the fighting reportedly seemed calmer than the previous day.

According to the World Health Organization, over 600 people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured in the fighting. The country’s Health Ministry said at least 450 people were killed in the western Darfur region alone. This comes as many UN agencies and NGOs announced temporary suspensions of their work in Khartoum and Darfur due to the intense fighting.&nbsp;

Apple may have briefly been overtaken by Saudi Aramco as the world's most valuable company before clawing back to that position. But Aramco seems like a more attractive stock for shareholder returns and the reason for that is dividends!

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cemented his return to the Arab fold Tuesday (May 9) after Saudi Arabia said it will reopen its diplomatic mission in Syria. The announcement was made by the Saudi foreign ministry and later confirmed by Damascus. This also comes days after Syria was readmitted into the Arab League ending its years-long suspension.

The restoration of diplomatic ties happened nearly a decade after Riyadh withdrew its representatives during the early stages of Syria's civil war.&nbsp;

The statement by Riyadh's foreign ministry said that the Kingdom has decided "to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in Syria," as quoted by the official Saudi Press Agency, adding that it would seek to "develop joint Arab action".

Meanwhile, the Syrian news agency SANA, also citing officials, reported, "The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia."&nbsp;

The contact between the two countries gathered momentum after the landmark China-brokered deal to re-establish ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, reported Reuters citing a regional source aligned with Damascus.

Tehran is reportedly a key ally of Assad. However, the United States, an ally of Saudi Arabia along with Arab countries, is opposed to initiatives taken by regional countries to normalise ties with Assad.&nbsp;

The US has cited his government's brutality during the conflict. Notably, Assad had been politically isolated in the region since Syria's war began and it was not until this week's diplomatic activity which has resumed ties that shifted the political landscape.

The agreement also comes ahead of the pan-Arab bloc's next summit which will take place on May 19. Last month, Assad met Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan for the first time since the war broke out in 2011.&nbsp;

In 2012, Saudi Arabia severed ties with Assad's government while it has also long hailed Assad's ouster, backing Syrian rebels in earlier stages of the war.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia, Syria to restore diplomatic ties after a decade, reopen missions

As the two warring factions in Sudan began, United States-Saudi Arabia brokered truce talks in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah over the weekend, the Sudanese capital, on Monday (May 8) continued to witness air strikes.&nbsp;

There has been no official word on the talks that began on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This comes as both sides have broken several ceasefires since the conflict began last month.&nbsp;

What is happening in Jeddah?

Army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday, said that the army is looking for a peaceful solution but that there could be discussions about a lasting settlement. However, it is only possible “after we reach a permanent ceasefire in Khartoum.”&nbsp;

He added, “We believe the peaceful solution is the ideal route to handle this crisis,” as quoted by Reuters. This comes as the two sides are holding discussions in Jeddah over a ceasefire and humanitarian issues like safe passage. The US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks have also been dubbed as the “pre-negotiation talks” by the two countries.&nbsp;

A Saudi diplomat source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that both sides consider themselves “capable of winning the battle”. As of Monday, the source also told the news agency that the discussions had yielded “no major progress,” adding that a “permanent ceasefire isn’t on the table”.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said that they are pushing to expand negotiations and reach a “permanent cessation of hostilities”. The talks in Jeddah, which are “set to continue&nbsp;
“in the following days”, aim to reach “an effective short-term halt” to the hostilities while also facilitating aid delivery and restoring basic services.&nbsp;

Air strikes continue across Khartoum&nbsp;

Media reports, on Monday, indicate that sound of air strikes and clashes echoed anew across the capital city. A southern Khartoum resident told AFP that their family could hear “the sound of airstrikes which appeared to come from near a market in central Khartoum”.&nbsp;

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, so far, over 750 people have been killed while more than 5,000 have been injured, across Sudan amid the ongoing fighting. Meanwhile, the United Nations said, almost 200 people have been killed in West Darfur state over the past two weeks. There was also an incident of “large-scale” looting at the World Food Programme in Khartoum over the weekend, said a UN spokesperson, on Monday.&nbsp;

The ongoing fighting has already displaced 335,000 people and created in excess of 120,000 refugees who have fled north into Egypt, west to Chad, and to South Sudan. This comes as the UN has raised multiple warnings over the widening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.&nbsp;

Sudanese people rely on talks in Jeddah

“It's very dangerous everywhere,” said Rawaa Hamad, who escaped from Port Sudan to Qatar on Monday. She added that in Sudan, people are witnessing &nbsp;“a lack of everything – a lack of water, lack of fuel, lack of medicine, lack of even hospitals and doctors,” reported AFP.&nbsp;

A 35-year-old government employee in Bahri, Tamader Ibrahim, told Reuters, “If the Jeddah negotiations fail to stop the war this would mean that we won't be able to return to our homes and our lives. We’re waiting on these negotiations because they're our only hope.”&nbsp;

In what comes as a significant meeting that could potentially shape the future of West Asia and keep China at bay, the National Security Advisers of the US, UAE and India met in Saudi Arabia with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman playing the gracious host.

In what comes as a significant meeting that could potentially shape the future of West Asia and keep China at bay, the National Security Advisers of the US, UAE and India met in Saudi Arabia with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman playing the gracious host. The objective of the meeting was to further expand a “shared vision of a more secure and prosperous Middle East region interconnected with India and the World." According to a readout issued by the White House, US NSA Jake Sullivan held a meeting with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval, as the duo reviewed decisions taken in their last meeting (Feb 1) and charted plans to meet later this month in Sydney on the margins of the QUAD summit. “National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with Saudi Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and National Security Advisor of India Ajit Doval on May 7 in Saudi Arabia to advance their shared vision of a more secure and prosperous Middle East region interconnected with India and the world,” the White House said Sunday in a readout of the meeting. Sullivan also held talks with his Saudi and UAE counterparts in an effort to repair the ties with the Sunni world. Why does the meeting assume significance? Notably, in the lead-up to the meeting, media reports claimed that the new grouping might announce plans to develop joint infrastructure that connects Gulf and Arab countries via a railway network and also extends to India via shipping lanes. "The initiative would include connecting Arab countries in the Levant and the Gulf via a network of railways that will also connect to India through seaports in the Gulf," reports noted. Sullivan had hinted at developing the railway infrastructure after he talked about the I2U2 group which had proposed the project for the first time. “If you remember nothing else from my speech, remember I2U2, because you will be hearing more about it as we go forward," said Sullivan during his speech last week at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
