<p>The New Yorker magazine published an excerpt online entitled "A Sackful of Seeds" from the 15th novel by Rushdie, titled "Victory City," which is due to be published in early February by Penguin Random House.</p>

<p>The book tells the "epic tale" of a woman in the 14th century in what is now part of India, the publishing house said.</p>

<p>The New Yorker said this excerpt will be published in its print edition dated December 12 and due out for sale on Monday.</p>

<p>Rushdie, a Briton born in India, confirmed on Twitter that the magazine has published an extract from "Victory City."</p>

<p>It was the first time since August 9 that Rushdie posted something on Twitter. He did so then to announce that his next book would come out in February 2023.</p>

<p>Three days later, while Rushdie was on stage preparing to give a lecture in Chautauqua, New York, a young man ran up and stabbed him repeatedly.</p>

<p>The 75-year-old writer, who had received death threats after the publication of his "The Satanic Verses" in 1988, was stabbed several times in the neck and abdomen.</p>

<p>Rushdie was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery but ultimately lost his vision in one eye and the use of one hand, his agent Andrew Wylie said in October.</p>

<p>The author had lived in hiding for years after Iran's first supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ordered his killing for what he deemed the blasphemous nature of "The Satanic Verses".</p>

<p>The suspect in the stabbing, Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old from New Jersey with roots in Lebanon, was arrested immediately after the attack and subsequently pleaded not guilty to the charges.</p>

<p>Matar was tried at the Chautauqua County Courthouse on these charges and has been in detention&nbsp;since his capture.</p>

<p>The attack happened 33 years after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran at the time, issued a religious decree, or fatwa, denouncing Rushdie for his novel "The Satanic Verses."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interview with the New York Post that was published on Wednesday that Matar said that he respected Khomeini, but refused to confirm whether or not the fatwa was the source of his inspiration. He claimed to have "read a couple of pages" of "The Satanic Verses" and to have seen the author's YouTube videos.</p>

<p>Matar, as quoted by&nbsp;the Post, remarked about Rushdie, "I don't like him very much."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He's someone who attacked Islam, he attacked their beliefs, the belief systems."</p>

Wylie had claimed earlier that the author may lose an eye due to the brutal attack while informing that the nerves of Rushdie's arm were severed and his liver was damaged in the stabbing.&nbsp;Author Aatish Taseer, in a tweet, said Salman Rushdie is&nbsp;“off the ventilator and talking (and joking).”</p>

<p>Rushdie was hospitalised after 24-year-old alleged assailant Hadi Matar rushed on stage at the Chautauqua Institution and stabbed him in the neck and abdomen multiple times.&nbsp;Matar, who police say is of Lebanese descent, has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon. <p>Police said that Rushdie was airlifted to a hospital. New York said that the novelist is alive and being treated at the hospital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rabbi Charles Savenor, who was in the audience for the lecture at Chautauqua Institution, about 100 km from the city, said, "This guy ran onto platform and started pounding on Mr Rushdie."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Savenor told the news agency that "at first you're like, 'What's going on?' And then it became abundantly clear in a few seconds that he was being beaten." He said the attack lasted about 20 seconds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rushdie's current situation is unknown but Andrew Wylie, who is a spokesperson for the novelist, said in an emailed statement that "Salman is in surgery." But Wylie did not give further details to share.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The motive behind the attack was not revealed and it was also not clear what kind of weapon was used.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Friday’s knife attack in New York brings back the focus on the book and what led to the death threats made against the Indian-born author.</p>

<p><strong>The Satanic Verses and controversy </strong></p>

<p>The book was published in September 1988 and immediately stoked controversy around the world and among the Muslim community.</p>

<p>Several Muslim countries immediately banned the book, which was also&nbsp;burned during demonstrations in the UK, Pakistan and elsewhere. The book is still banned in a number of countries including UAE, India, and Egypt.</p>

<p>The book is considered by many Muslims to be blasphemous as it portrayed a fictionalised version of the Prophet Mohammed and an interpretation of the Quran.</p>

<p>It has references to some Quran verses, as alleged by some scholars, that allow for prayers to be made to three pagan goddesses, contrary to Islam’s strict belief that there is only one God.</p>

<p>In the novel, Rushdie mentions the involvement of a prophet closely resembling the founder of Islam, Muhammad.</p>

<p>In that, he says that this prophet is tricked into striking a deal with Satan in which he exchanges some of his monotheistic dogmatism in favour of the three goddesses. He then realises his error.</p>

<p>Khomeini and others assert he had portrayed the prophet irreverently.</p>

<p><strong>The fatwa</strong></p>

<p>Iran’s Khomeini issued a fatwa ordering on Feb. 14, 1989, ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie.</p>

<p>According to history.com, a fatwa can only be repealed by that same scholar, and Ruhollah Khomeini died in the same year he issued the call.</p>

<p>The then Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi banned the import of the book in October 1988, hoping to win Muslim support ahead of elections. Some 20 countries went on to ban it.</p>

<p><strong>Attacks on translators and publishers </strong></p>

<p>‘The Satanic Verses’ has also caused trouble for those who translated the novel.</p>

<p>Ettore Capriolo, the Italian translator of the novel, was injured in a stabbing in Milan in 1991.</p>

<p>A Japanese scholar and translator of Rushdie’s novel, Hitoshi Igarashi, was stabbed to death in 1991.</p>

<p>William Nygaard, the Norwegian publisher of the book, was shot three times in Oslo in 1993, but managed to survive.</p>

<p>Rushdie went into hiding for 10 years under an alias. He was living in UK at the time. He was also given 24-hour police protection by former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher’s government.</p>

Why was Salman Rushdie attacked and what is the controversy surrounding ‘The Satanic Verses’?

<p>Renowned Indian-born novelist Salman Rushdie had to be rushed to the hospital, after being attacked while on stage at an event in New York.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As Rushdie was being presented to make a speech on artistic freedom at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York state, a guy allegedly charged the stage and stabbed Rushdie.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The author sustained a neck wound from a stabbing, according to eyewitness testimony and a statement from the city's police.</p>

<p>Police said that an on-site state trooper apprehended the perpetrator and took him into custody.</p>

<p>While police provided no information regarding the suspect's name or any possible motive, the attack on Rushdie is rumoured to have been carried out by an Islamic fanatic.</p>

<p>Rushdie, who himself belongs to a Muslim family came under fire for his fourth novel, "The Satanic Verses". Reportedly, he even received death threats over passages which some Muslims claim as being blasphemous.</p>

<p>A year later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran at the time, issued a fatwa, or religious decree, calling on Muslims to execute the author for blasphemy.</p>

<p>There is no information on his condition. However, New York governor Kathy Hochul has confirmed that he was alive.</p>
