Ever since Martin Scorsese termed Marvel films as 'not cinema', there has been a raging debate over the topic with conflicting opinions in Hollywood. While filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and Ken Loach have supported Scorsese's comment, a slew of Marvel actors like Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Chadwick Boseman defended the MCU.

'Avengers: Endgame' directors Joe and Anthony Russo have now reacted to the statement and stated that nobody really owns cinema and it is a matter of perception.

“Ultimately, we define cinema as a film that can bring people together to have a shared, emotional experience,” Joe told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. “When we look at the box office (of) 'Avengers: Endgame', we don’t see that as a signifier of financial success, we see it as a signifier of emotional success.”

"It’s a movie that had an unprecedented impact on audiences around the world in the way that they shared that narrative and the way that they experienced it. And the emotions they felt watching it," he added.

Scorsese had earlier compared the MCU movies to a ‘theme park ride’. In a New York Times op-ed, he had written, “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Joe continued, “But, at the end of the day, what do we know? We’re just two guys from Cleveland, Ohio, and ‘cinema’ is a New York word. In Cleveland, we call them movies.” Anthony chimed in: “The other way to think about it, too, is nobody owns cinema. We don’t own cinema. You don’t own cinema. Scorsese doesn’t own cinema.”

The last of the 'Avengers' series, 'Endgame' broke multiple box office records during its theatrical run.

Scorsese's next 'The Irishman' is up for a Netflix release later this month. The film will have limited release in select theatres. It is reportedy the most expensive original film Netflix has ever produced.

Russo Brothers on Martin Scorsese's criticism of Marvel films: Nobody owns cinema

In a cheer for all the Marvel fans, the brothers behind 'Avengers' - Joe and Anthony Russo -- are now set to launch a new series, which will present the decades-long vying between Marvel and DC!

Named 'Slugfest', the series at Quibi, the mobile TV subscription startup, seeks inspiration from the book 'Slugfest: Inside the Epic', 50-Year Battle Between Marvel and DC by Reed Tucker, reported a magazine.

The forthcoming docu-series will take fans through a journey documenting the growth of comic books as a new American art form, following the rise of the two companies which went on to become comics-publishing and Hollywood powerhouses. Moreover, it will also showcase some lesser-known stories from both Marvel and DC's history, including some interviews with creators of the best-known superhero characters in the world.

The upcoming docu-series will receive direction from Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, who are behind the award-winning documentaries 'Believer' and 'Framing John DeLorean'. It is set to be bankrolled by Todd Makurath, Peter Rieveschl, Nick Gilhool, and Jen Casey.

Earlier in September, it was announced that the two will receive the International Cinematographers Guild Publicists Motion Picture Showman of the Year Award at the 57th Annual Publicists Awards ceremony scheduled to be held next year.

They also premiered their feature 'Mosul' directed by Matthew Michale Carnahan at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals this year.

Russo brothers coming up with Marvel vs DC docu-series 'Slugfest' for Quibi

When you have just directed the biggest blockbuster movie of all time, you earn the clout to dictate terms with even the highest executives in Hollywood.

But for the Russo brothers, it also raised a question that would be familiar to the superheroes of 'Avengers: Endgame' -- what to do next with all that power?

In an interview with AFP at the Toronto film festival, the Russos admitted the influence that comes with such uncharted global box office success is "an exceedingly powerful tool, more powerful than we understand."

"It can be used for positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement," said Joe Russo, who at 48 is marginally the younger of the affable duo from Cleveland, Ohio.

The brothers did not spend their many Marvel promotional world tours just taking endless selfies with hysterical comic-book fans, but searching for new avenues to explore, they said.

The result is a notably international and political slate of projects for their new studio AGBO -- and barely a spandex-clad superhero in sight.

First up is 'Mosul,' which dramatizes the true story of Iraqi police's Nineveh SWAT team fighting to recapture their home city from the Islamic State group in 2017.

The action thriller, inspired by a New Yorker article, is told entirely from Iraqis' perspective and shot in Arabic -- radical ground for Hollywood.

"It felt criminally overdue," said Anthony Russo, 49. "That's why we knew this movie had to get made -- because this movie has never been made."

Also in the works are 'Dhaka,' a film about the kidnapping of a Bangladeshi businessman shot mainly in India, and Japanese anime adaptation 'Battle of the Planets.'

But politics is a common thread to the brothers' next projects, which include a film about the opioid epidemic in their home state of Ohio.

"We're living in a time where there's a lot of division -- division is being promoted," said Joe. "You're either looking out for yourself right now, or you're looking out for the community."

"And we choose to look out for the community."

Without naming any politicians directly, they say it would "be great" if the current White House watched 'Mosul.'

"Clearly there is incredible culpability on the part of the US in creating the problem in Iraq, and ISIS is a direct result of the war there," said Joe, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

- More Marvel? -

It is all a marked departure from the Russos' previous projects.

The brothers first gained broad recognition for their work on cult hit TV shows such as 'Arrested Development' and 'Community.'

But after successfully directing 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' in 2014, they quickly rose to the top of the lucrative Marvel Studios filmmakers' stable.

The brothers are not committed to any future Marvel films, but their desire to import new perspectives to Hollywood filmmaking is already apparent in the Disney-owned franchise's next projects.

'Ms Marvel' will soon become Marvel's first on-screen Muslim superhero, with a TV series on Disney+ streaming service about a Pakistani-origin teenage girl living in New Jersey.

China-born Simu Liu will become Marvel's first leading Asian superhero in 2021's 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.'

According to Joe, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is "expending a lot of energy to diversify the Marvel Universe because everyone has the right to see their stories on screen."

Of course, the profit motive is unavoidable -- 'Endgame' made more at Asian box offices than the whopping $860 million managed at home.

"Joe and I love big global storytelling," said Anthony. "Our Marvel movies are among our favourite work that we've ever done."

"Cinema is uniquely positioned to help open up people to new experiences and new ideas."

Does that mean a return to the world of superheroes one day?

"Perhaps more Marvel movies. We're not talking about anything right now.

From Marvel to 'Mosul': Russo brothers embark on global mission

Anthony and Joe Russo, popularly known as the Russo Brothers, recently opened up about the Marvel-Sony split over `Spider-Man` film series.

'Spider-Man's' future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following the news of Disney and Sony failing to reach a deal on new films of the iconic superhero franchise stands uncertain, reported a news agency.

Disney is Marvel's parent company. Marvel produced the last two 'Spider-Man' movies, but won't be involved in the future installments of the superhero franchise because the two companies couldn't agree to profit-sharing terms.

The original deal was struck so that Spider-Man could appear in 'Captain America: Civil War', 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame', all of which were directed by the Russo Brothers. "We don't know how things are playing out on an inside level," said Anthony."We fought hard to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, but it was always a complicated marriage," he added.

Anthony also noted that they are "grateful" for the time that they had with the character. On being asked about the superhero franchise's future, he said that they can't comment beyond saying "it`s complicated." "We`re thrilled that we got to introduce a new version of Spider-Man to the world and we're grateful for the time we had with the character. In terms of how it moves forward, we can`t comment beyond saying it`s complicated," Anthony said.

Last month, news broke that Disney would be ending its partnership with Sony Pictures on the 'Spider-Man' film series due to a disagreement over co-financing. Sony owns the film rights to the flicks, and several years ago, the studios struck a deal - Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige would help in producing Sony's solo 'Spider-Man' movies, allowing Tom Holland's character Spider-Man to appear in the MCU, beginning with 2016's 'Captain America: Civil War'.

After the release of this year's 'Spider-Man: Far From Home', which has now become Sony's highest-grossing film of all time with USD 1.11 billion worldwide, Disney reportedly asked to share co-financing on future 'Spider-Man' films, while Sony wanted the financing arrangement to remain the same as it had been earlier.

As part of the previous agreement, Marvel also served as a producer on the 2017 and 2019 standalone Sony 'Spider-Man' movies. Now with fans in an uproar, Sony has stated it was Disney's decision to pull Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige's involvement in future films but added that they "hope this might change in the future. "Unless a deal is reached, Holland will not appear in any future MCU movies and no Marvel characters will appear in Holland's solo films.

Russo Brothers to produce action-comedy 'Down Under Cover'

`Avengers: Endgame` co-director Joe Russo gave the Marvel fans a glimpse of intense behind-the-scenes preparation that went into Thor`s epic `going for the head` shot in the film.

Chris Hemsworth`s Thor needed all the help he could get to prepare for one of the most iconic scenes.

And it seems like Joe Russo helped the actor with the target practice.

On Wednesday, Russo brothers posted a picture on his twitter handle in which he can be seen holding Thor`s hammer axe `Stormbreaker` while having a deep discussion with Hemsworth.

'Day 1 of `going for the head` practice,' he captioned the picture.

Those who have watched the ultra-popular film which released on April 26 will instantly catch the reference of that caption.

While Thor chopping off Thanos` head in the very beginning of the film might have taken many by surprise, the single hit was hands down one of the most memorable scenes from the movie.

Russo`s post proves that a lot of detailing went into making the scene as perfect as it finally came out to be.

In the film, after chopping Thanos` head off his shoulder, Thor says `I went for the head', which was a clear reference to `Avengers: Infinity War`, in which Thor, in an attempt to kill Thanos before he snaps his fingers, hits him in the chest with `Stormbreaker`.

However, after taking the hit, Thanos smiles and says `You should have gone for the head` before snapping his finger and causing the devastation that he did.

`Endgame` has been breaking all possible box office scores and records ever since it released in April.

As far as the worldwide box office performance is concerned, according to media reports, the film has already taken over James Cameron`s Titanic and is expected to soon take over Avatar too.

'Avengers: Endgame' : Russo Brothers share behind the scenes picture with Chris Hemsworth

The directors of 'Avengers: Endgame' pleaded with fans on Tuesday not to spoil the movie by giving away storylines after reports that some scenes had leaked online.

In an open letter posted on Twitter under the hashtag #DontSpoilTheEndgame, Joe and Anthony Russo said they and the vast cast of the upcoming Marvel superhero movie "have worked tirelessly for the last three years with the sole intention of delivering a surprising and emotionally powerful conclusion" to the saga.

"When you see Endgame in coming weeks, please don`t spoil it for others, the same way you wouldn`t want it spoiled for you," they added.

Walt Disney Co`s 'Avengers: Endgame' marks the conclusion of a story told across 22 Marvel films. The plot has been shrouded in secrecy, with no advance screenings for the entertainment press. Sales of advance tickets earlier this month surpassed those of 2015 movie 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.'

The film, which brings together multiple comic book characters, starts its rollout on April 24 in Australia and China before arriving in the United States on April 25.

When they were asked to spill some details during a press event, the directors remained tight-lipped. "That's another thing that we won't talk about, unfortunately. People will find out on April 26th," said Joe Russo while his brother Anthony added, "What are the chances that we are going to answer that question?"

The fourth installment of the 'Avenger' franchise which looks to wrap up eleven years of storytelling is bound to make both fans and the cast emotional.

"It's just kind of the whole shoot felt pretty nostalgic. Especially this one. We were constantly sort of talking about when it all started and how we sort of pulled this off and what we were a part of. And yeah, I don't know, I mean by the end of the run it was also like because we shot this for 8 months back to back, so I was also kind of happy to get off the set. But it was incredibly special and emotional," said Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor in the film.

While actors Mark Ruffalo and Chris Evans were of the belief that Scarlett Johanson got the most emotional, director Joe Russo begged to differ.
"Scarlett wasn't emotional. Scarlett is not- she is very good at dealing with the last days of shoots. I think other people because it's like summer camp. Every time like one of these are done, they all get sad because they're not going to see each other until the next one, " said Joe Russo.

Chris Evans admitted though that he got teary-eyed by the end of it to which Mark Ruffalo added, "We all were."

For stars like Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner and Paul Rudd, their journey has been made all the more special because of the fans.

Meanwhile, many are expecting 'Captain Marvel' to be the game-changer in the fight against Thanos and actress Brie Larson is more than excited to join Team Avengers.

"I think I came in at a time that felt actually very comforting because I didn't know anything about what was going to happen. I still don't know what happens in this movie, so instead, it was more of like, 'Oh its a 10-year anniversary photo' where I got the opportunity to meet everyone and like ask stupid questions and be like 'I'm the new kid. And it was really helpful because making movies like this is like, its a triathlon. They are really complicated to do and so to have that sort of support going into it rather than jumping in just by myself is helpful," said Larson.

In an interview with Collider, Joe Russo said, "I’ll say it could easily be a three-hour film. We like it to play at a certain pace. I’m sure that we’ll squeeze it."

Joe's brother, Anthony added that they had a whole year of work left on the movie. "I do think it will be longer than Avengers 3, but it’s clearly impossible to say,” he said.

'Avengers: Infinity War' sequel to be the longest Marvel film?

It boils down to this. 10 years of marvellous films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe culminates into one epic finale called Avengers Infinity War - a film that will make you pant in excitement from the first shot and leave you dumbstruck by the ending.

For those who are yet to watch the film, be assured this one is spoiler free.

As the trailers suggest, the film gathers 20 superheroes from the Marvel Universe to fight the ultimate villain- Thanos. The CGI created giant with Josh Brolin's voiceover is after six infinity stone- two of which is already in his possession. The infinity stones- represent a different characteristic of existence- soul, time, space, mind, reality and power. Now the six stones together can prove to be lethal and Thanos can ruin the entire world in a matter of seconds if he acquires all of them. But with the superhumans around, would Thanos be able to achieve this?

Marvel films are always a lot of fun to watch. They are hugely entertaining, have witty one-liners and when you have Tony Stark at the helm of affairs, you know you're in for a good ride. Avengers: Infinity War not just uses Stark's cockiness - especially in the scenes where he clashes with Doctor Strange( Benedict Cumberbatch), it also has Thor -revamped after Ragnarok, the hilarious Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and wit-king Chris Pratt as Star Lord from Guardians of The Galaxy. So you can safely assume that the film is high on one-liners.

Avengers: Infinity War though scores more than anything for the way it presents its antagonist Thanos, who is a layered character. At some points, you understand his menace. He is good and bad. He thinks he is doing mankind a favour while creating mayhem in the universe. He has a troubled past and that keeps coming back to haunt him.

The film also beautifully weaves the 20 characters into one thread and its fun to watch how different factions of superheroes are fighting together with the evil force until it culminates into one jaw-dropping grand climax. You may have been a fan of Marvel films, and you have watched all the films to have a vague idea of how the film culminates, but you woul'n't have predicted the climax of this film. You simply cannot see where its headed by the end of it.

The cliffhanger ending helps to build up the suspense for the next one. It surely will make your year-long wait painful.

You don't need me to tell you to watch Avengers: Infinity War. You will watch it even if you are not a Marvel fan or a fan of the franchise. It is two-and-a-half hour cinematic brilliance which cannot be missed at any cost.
