Russia-Ukraine: After Ultimatum to NATO, Zelensky Clarifies He Does Not Seek Nuclear Weapons

The presidential election in the United States (US) is less than a month away. The November 5 election is happening under the shadow of two wars- the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip that began on October 7, 2023,&nbsp;and the Russia-Ukraine war that started on February 24, 2022.&nbsp;

The Israel-Hamas war has further spread to West Asia with Israel now fighting Iran and Tehran-aligned Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The top contenders in this US presidential election are Donald Trump (Republican Party) and Kamala Harris (Democratic Party). Harris, who is the current vice president, became the Democratic presidential candidate after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

Both Trump and Harris have spoken in length about the two wars but have not offered any realistic ways to stop them.&nbsp;

<h2>Where do Trump and Harris stand on Gaza and Ukraine?</h2>

<h3>On Gaza war</h3>

The Israel-Hamas war merited a few scant mentions over less than five minutes of the September 10 presidential debate on ABC News between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

During the debate, Trump reiterated his position that the war in West Asia would have not broken out if he were president.&nbsp;

Hitting out at Harris, Trump said, "When she mentions Israel, all of a sudden - she hates Israel. She wouldn’t even meet with Netanyahu when he went to Congress to make a very important speech. She refused to be there because she was at a sorority party of hers. She wanted to go to the sorority party. She hates Israel," he said.

"If she's president, I believe that Israel will not exist within two years from now," Trump added and expressed his continued support of Israel's offensive in Gaza.

He has also urged Israel to “finish up” the war because it was is losing support.&nbsp;

Harris, meanwhile, said that Trump's remarks about her hating Israel were&nbsp;"absolutely not true."

Harris said that she backed&nbsp;a ceasefire deal in Gaza that would see the release of the remaining Israeli captives, but renewed her pledge to continue to arm Israel.

She also voiced support for the two-state solution.

<h3>On Ukraine war</h3>

Trump has many times mentioned that he could stop the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours if he were elected president again. During the September 10 presidential debate, the Republican candidate sidestepped a question&nbsp;on whether he wanted Ukraine to win in its war against Russia.

“I want the war to stop,” Trump said when he was directly asked if he wanted Kyiv to win.

On Thursday (Oct 17), Trump blamed Ukrainian President&nbsp;Volodymyr Zelensky for starting the war against&nbsp;Russia. Trump has repeatedly called Zelensky the "greatest salesman on Earth"&nbsp;for having solicited and received billions of dollars of US&nbsp;military aid since the war broke out in 2022.

His remarks&nbsp;suggest he could seek to wind down aid for Ukraine if he defeats Harris in the election, a report by the news agency Reuters said.

Kamala Harris, meanwhile,&nbsp;has pledged to continue supporting Ukraine, and she has portrayed a victory for the country as a vital American national security interest. She has frequently rebuked Trump for being unwilling to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The reason why Trump says the (Russia-Ukraine)&nbsp;war would be over in 24 hours, because he would just give it up. And that's not who we are as Americans...we brought 50 countries together to support Ukraine in its right to defence," Harris said during the presidential debate.

"If Donald Trump were president right now, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv...," she added.

<h2>Poll: Trump leads Harris on dealing with Gaza, Ukraine wars</h2>

A recent poll by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) suggested that Trump had an edge over Harris&nbsp;on who would better navigate the country through the Ukraine war, the Gaza war, and the escalating conflict in West Asia.

In overall support, the poll published on Friday showed Harris and Trump tied across the seven battleground states that could decide the November presidential election.

The poll showed Harris with marginal 2 per cent&nbsp;point lead&nbsp;in Arizona, Georgia and Michigan, Trump up 6 points in Nevada and 1 in Pennsylvania, and the two tied in North Carolina and Wisconsin. The poll of 600 registered voters in each state conducted on September 28-October 8 had a margin of error of 4% per cent points in each state.

Trump leads Harris in the seven swing states 50 per cent&nbsp;to 39 per cent&nbsp;on who is best able to handle Russian&nbsp;war against Ukraine. Trump also has a 48 per cent&nbsp;to 33 per cent&nbsp;lead over Harris on who is better suited to handle the Israel-Hamas war, the WSJ poll added.

Russia said Friday that it had swapped 95 Ukrainian soldiers held captive for an equal number of Russian troops in an exchange deal brokered by the United Arab Emirates.

"As a result of the negotiation process, 95 Russian servicemen were returned from territory controlled by the Kyiv regime," the Russian defence ministry said.&nbsp;

"In return, 95 Ukrainian army&nbsp;prisoners&nbsp;of war were handed over," it said.&nbsp;

Kyiv has not confirmed the exchange but the human rights centre Zmina said a prominent Ukrainian rights activist, Maksym Butkevych, was freed in the swap, citing his father.&nbsp;

Butkevych, co-founder of the independent Hromadske radio station and also a Ukraine serviceman, was serving a 13-year sentence on charges of wounding two civilians while firing an anti-tank grenade launcher in the eastern city of Severodonetsk.

He joined the Ukrainian army in March 2022, was detained in June and convicted of war crimes by a court in Lugansk in Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine in March 2023.

Despite ongoing hostilities, Russia and Ukraine have swapped hundreds of&nbsp;prisoners&nbsp;since the launch of Moscow's offensive in 2022, often in deals brokered by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia or Turkey.

The last reported swap was in September, when 206 POWs were exchanged, in a deal also mediated by the UAE.

Earlier Friday, Kyiv said it had received the bodies of 501 soldiers killed fighting Russian forces, mainly in eastern Ukraine, as a result of repatriation measures.

Russian lawmaker Shamsail Saraliyev told the RBK media outlet that Russia received 89 bodies of its soldiers in return.

Spanish authorities on Tuesday said they had arrested four people suspected of orchestrating a sanctions-busting commercial network after intercepting 13 tonnes of chemical products bound for Russia.

The investigation began in 2022 after Western countries imposed waves of sanctions on Russia to prevent it from acquiring equipment and technologies for its invasion of Ukraine.

Police and customs officials impounded the chemical products found in a container in the port of Barcelona, Spanish national police said in a statement.

North Korea said on Sunday (Sept 29) that US (United States) military aid worth $8 billion to Ukraine was an "incredible mistake," adding, that Washington was playing with fire against nuclear superpower Russia. Earlier, US President Joe Biden announced the new aid as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington seeking help for Kyiv to defend itself, including longer-range weapons that will upgrade its ability to strike Russia from safer distances. 'US, West should not dismiss...' Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, said that the US was escalating the Ukraine conflict and driving all of Europe to the brink of a nuclear war. "The United States and the West should not dismiss or underestimate Russia's serious warning," Kim said in a statement published by state news agency KCNA. "Are the United States and the West really able to handle the consequences as they recklessly play with fire against Russia, which is a nuclear superpower?," she added. Helping Zelensky continue a military adventure is a dangerous and irresponsible gamble and announcing the new $8 billion in military aid was "an incredible mistake and foolish act," Kim further said. The accusation against Pyongyang North Korea has been illegally supplying weapons to Russia. Both countries have dramatically upgraded their ties in the past year, with their leaders meeting twice and agreeing on a "comprehensive strategic partnership" that includes a mutual defence pledge. The US had recently said that North Korea shipped at least 16,500 containers of weapons to Russia since September last year and Russia has fired missiles from those shipments against Ukraine. Russia-Ukraine War: Zelensky Faces Waning Support On Capitol Hill

President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on Wednesday of plotting potentially catastrophic attacks on Ukrainian nuclear plants, in a defiant UN address in which he denounced bids to impose peace from the outside.

Zelensky sought to rally support among world leaders at their annual gathering in New York as his concerns grow, weeks before a US election that could sharply shift the stance of Ukraine's main backer.

Speaking from the UN rostrum in a black polo jacket, Zelensky said that Ukrainian intelligence has found that Russia is scanning the country's nuclear infrastructure by satellite.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "does seem to be planning attacks on our nuclear power plants and the infrastructure, aiming to disconnect the plants from the power grid," Zelensky said.

"Any critical incident in the energy system could lead to a nuclear disaster, a day like that must never come," Zelensky said.

"Moscow needs to understand this, and this depends in part on your determination to put pressure on the aggressor," he told the General Assembly.

Russia captured the giant Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant soon after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia in recent weeks has been pounding Ukraine's electricity grid, in what Western and Ukrainian officials describe as an attempt to leave the country shivering during the winter.

<h2>'Never accept' deal from outside</h2>

Zelensky on Thursday will head to the White House to see President Joe Biden and present what he describes as a "victory plan" that shows a path forward for Ukraine.

In his UN address, Zelensky singled out China and Brazil as he questioned the "true interest" of countries that have been pressing Ukraine to negotiate with Russia.

Employing the language of the Global South, Zelensky said: "You will not boost your power at Ukraine's expense, and the world has already been through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of those who are small."

"Ukrainians will never accept -- will never accept -- why anyone in the world believes that such a brutal colonial past, which suits no one today, can be imposed on Ukraine now," Zelensky said.

Zelensky has sharply criticised Trump's running mate, J D&nbsp;Vance, who has said bluntly that he does not care about Ukraine and that the United States should focus instead on confronting China.

"Let Mr&nbsp;Vance read up on the history of the Second World War, when a country was forced to give part of its territory to one particular person," Zelensky told The New Yorker.&nbsp;

"Let Mr Vance read up on the history of the Second World War, when a country was forced to give part of its territory to one particular person," Zelensky told The New Yorker. In Germany, the second-largest contributor of military aid to Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also facing pressure from parties opposed to support for Kyiv. Britain has been among the most robust supporters of Ukraine. Foreign Secretary David Lammy told AFP that his government was committed to helping "to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position" as winter approaches. Lebanon crisis The annual extravaganza marks a swansong for Biden, 81, who has passed the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris to face Trump in the November 5 election. The summit comes against the backdrop of chaos in the Middle East as Israel ramps up attacks on the Iran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah, killing hundreds and prompting a mass exodus of people. The UN Security Council will hold a special session on Wednesday on Lebanon, as the United States says it hopes to present ideas for de-escalation. Wednesday will also see talks at the UN on two other hotspots -- Sudan and Haiti. The United States is looking for ways to drum up long-term financial support for stabilization efforts in violence-ravaged Haiti after Kenya began a long-awaited policing mission. Russia Ukraine War: Ukraine says deadly Russian air attack hits Zaporizhzhia

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Sep 24) addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)&nbsp;in New York for the last time. The 81-year-old leader started off by recounting conflicts of the world when he first entered&nbsp;public office around five decades ago. Speaking of how the US and Vietnam buried the hatchet during the Vietnam War, Biden said, “Things can get better. We should never forget that. I’ve seen that throughout my career.”

In his last speech before the United Nations General Assembly as the US president, Biden&nbsp;called on nations to band together amid conflict in the Middle East, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and rising concerns about China’s influence.

"I truly believe we’re at another inflection point in world history. The choices we make today will determine our future," Biden said.

<h2>Vows to support Ukraine</h2>

Biden in his final address to the UN vowed to support Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for over two years now. The US president&nbsp;said “our NATO allies and partners and 50 plus nations stood up” against Russia.

“Most importantly, the Ukrainian people stood up. I asked the people in this chamber to stand up for them,” Biden added.

He declared that Russian President&nbsp;Vladimir Putin’s war had failed and that Ukraine was still free. “He set out to weaken NATO, but NATO is bigger, stronger, and more united than ever before, with two new members, Finland and Sweden,” said the Democratic leader.

<h2>Gaza&nbsp;war: It's&nbsp;high time to ease sufferings</h2>

Biden spoke about the October 7 Hamas on Israel, in which hundreds of innocent civilians were killed and hundreds were taken hostage. “I’ve met with the families of those hostages. I’ve grieved with them,” the US president&nbsp;said. “They’re going through hell.”

He also talked about the ‘hell’ the Gazans were going through as a result of the devastating war.

“Innocent civilians in Gaza are also going through hell. Thousands and thousands killed, including aid workers. Too many families dislocated, crowding in the tents, facing a dire humanitarian situation.”

Biden said now it was high time that both parties come to the talking table and ease the sufferings in Gaza.

<h2>On dropping out of presidential race</h2>

Biden defended his decision to drop out of the presidential race by saying staying in power is not the most important thing.

“Being president has been the honour of my life,” the US president&nbsp;said. “There’s so much more I want to get done.”

“As much as I love the job, I love my country more. I decided, after 50 years of public service, it’s time for a new generation of leadership to take my nation forward,” he added.
