Iran has one of the biggest missile programmes in the Middle East. It has had several failed satellite launches in the past few years. These were blamed on technical issues.

In an email&nbsp;reaction to the news, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said: “Such actions are unhelpful and destabilising.”

“The United States remains concerned with Iran’s continued development of space launch vehicles (SLVs), which pose a significant proliferation concern,” the spokesperson said.

A UN resolution in 2015 called on Iran to refrain for up to eight years from work on ballistic missiles designed to deliver nuclear weapons, following an agreement with six world powers.

Iran tests satellite-carrying rocket, US calls it unhelpful and destabilising action

The Indian Space agency has 4 variants of rockets in its fleet and all of them will be heading for space over the next 5 months. Indicating that a busy mission schedule lay ahead for the Indian Space Research Organization, Chairman, Dr. S.Somanath outlined the launch line-up and the role of private industries in building ISRO's rockets, while speaking to WION.&nbsp;

"We follow the financial year - We are now getting ready for a launch of PSLV(Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket, possibly November-end, where PSLV will be carrying 'OceanSat', 'BhutanSat' and four customer satellites on board. We also have to do the SSLV(Small Satellite Launch Vehicle) mission, after making the corrections for the failure we encountered last time" he told WION.&nbsp;

Further, he said that there was another launch of the heaviest rocket LVM3, that will be performed to loft 36 OneWeb satellites in Low Earth orbit, sometime around January or February 2023. In addition to this, there would be a launch of the GSLV Mk2 rocket (now known as GSLV), to orbit Next-gen 'NavIC' satellites that are meant for Navigation purposes for India. He also said that the agency would be attempting to perform India's maiden mission to study the sun - Aditya-L1, before the end of March 2023.&nbsp;

Effectively, this means that there would be 2 flights of PSLV rockets, and one flight each of the SSLV, GSLV, and LVM3, would take place by March 2023. It must also be noted that each satellite that ISRO builds for India is also counted as a mission in itself.&nbsp;

Queried about the possibility of the GSLV rockets being manufactured by the Indian private industry, Somanath said that a manufacturing contract for five PSLV rockets had been given to the Indian industry(Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-Larsen&amp; Toubro), on an experimental basis.

"The PSLV is an experiment to see if the manufacturing base in the country can bring out a PSLV on their own, operate on their own, and ramp up production demand beyond the five units. This five is only a test case in which ISRO will hand-hold industry to understand the technology and take the whole activity forward", he said.&nbsp;

Beyond the five PSLV rockets, the industry can fund itself, build more PSLVs, operate more, and offer them commercially, it depends on the industry's capability. However, in terms of the GSLV(GSLV Mk2) rocket, Somanath said that ISRO didn't consider it a commercial launcher and that the rocket could be retired after 10 more flights.&nbsp;

As expected, it is the LVM3 or GSLV Mk3 that ISRO pins most of its hope on. Somanath said that ISRO saw higher commercial potential in LVM3 and that talks are underway with industries. He said that ISRO's commercial arm NewSpace India Limited would industrialize it sooner.&nbsp;

“Another set of 36 OneWeb satellites will be launched by the LVM3 in the first half of next year,” an NSIL executive told news agency PTI.

ISRO's heaviest rocket successfully places 36 OneWeb satellites into orbits in first commercial flight

"The PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket has done more than 50 launches to date and another 30 PSLV launches are in the offing. We are very clear with regards the utility/purpose of the next 30 launches. Beyond that, what?", the Chairman of India's Space Agency, Dr. S. Somanath told his colleagues and leading engineers from across domains in India. The senior space scientist and technocrat was pointing out the massive, revolutionary changes in rocket technology and how India must adapt to them.

Delivering the keynote address at the 'Engineers Conclave-2022', Somanath shared his future perspective for the Indian space programme and industry. "PSLV has to retire - today, tomorrow or a decade later. PSLV is 1980s-era technology and can't be used for missions in 2030s. It is not correct." he said. He also added that the same applies to the GSLV rocket. However, he mentioned that the GLSV Mk3 rocket is an exception, as it is a relatively new vehicle.

Elaborating on the reasons for 'retiring' old rockets, Somanath said that their cost could not be reduced further, their design was more than three decades old, it uses multiple propulsion technologies, is powered by toxic and carcinogenic fuels, is built using traditional manufacturing techniques.&nbsp;

"If we look at launch vehicle evolution, technology induction at appropriate time is essential. Otherwise, with the changing times when everybody (in the international launch market) is able to bring down cost of access to space, traditional technology (of ISRO) will not survive. We can say it (PSLV) is a national asset and continue to operate at a high cost, but I won't strongly recommend it," he reasoned.&nbsp;

As a solution to this, Somanath said that India has to look at building a cost-effective launcher for the future. "We are working on a new-generation launch vehicle of India, which should be better in terms of cost, re-usability, manufacturing process and possible to produce faster. Currently the teams are working on it," he said without specifying progress and timelines. It is intended that such a next-gen rocket will be powered by highly-efficient liquid fuel combinations such as methane and liquid oxygen, kerosene and liquid oxygen.

Preparations are in full swing in India's spaceport at Satish Dhawan Space Centre(SDSC), as the country gears up for the maiden commercial launch of the GSLV Mark3 rocket. Standing 44-nearly metres tall and weighing 640 tonnes, the GSLV Mark 3 is India's heaviest operational rocket. In a significant step-up for India in the global commercial rocket launch market, the GSLV Mark 3 will be making its maiden commercial flight by October-end, to orbit satellites from UK-based OneWeb.

The three-stage GSLV Mark3 rocket is powered by a solid-fueled first stage that is comprised of two strap-on boosters, followed by a liquid-fueled core stage and the final cryogenic stage. While the first two stages are responsible for lift-off and propelling the rocket out of the earth's atmosphere and into space, the final cryogenic stage provides it with high velocity and injects the satellites into the desired orbit.

The GSLV Mk3 is a special rocket for India, as it has a track record of delivering total success in the four launches it has had to date. So far, the rocket has had flights in 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The high-profile Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission was also carried out on the Mk3 rocket in 2019. This is also a vehicle that ISRO has pinned high hopes on for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, as this rocket is being modified to carry Indian astronauts to space.

At present, the two solid strap-on boosters and the liquid core stage of the rocket have been fully integrated at the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The mission update added that the 36 satellites from OneWeb have successfully undergone health checks and have been assembled with the dispenser unit. In the coming days, the integration of the cryogenic upper stage (the final stage) of the rocket and the integration of the payload fairing( protective shield that houses the satellites) with 36 satellites will take place.

NewSpace India Limited(NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO, has signed two launch service contracts with Network Access Associated Limited(OneWeb), UK for launching OneWeb LEO Broadband Communication Satellites on board ISRO's heaviest launcher GSLV Mark 3. This is a historic milestone for India as it will mean the foray of GSLV Mark3 into the global commercial launch service market.

OneWeb is a global communications network powered by space, enabling connectivity for governments, businesses, and communities. It is implementing a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites. India's Bharti serves as a major investor and shareholder in OneWeb. Recently, WION reported about the OneWeb passenger satellites having arrived at the Chennai airport in India, from the US.

As tensions with China over Taiwan rise, using training exercises like the recently concluded Orient Shield drill could be a simple and rapid option for Washington to redeploy some forces in East Asia, even if only briefly.

Camp Amami, which was inaugurated in 2019, is one of a number of military camps Japan is constructing on its southwest islands for anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile units in an effort to fend off any attack from China.&nbsp;

US wants to keep rocket launchers at frontline Japanese base at edge of East China Sea

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently announced the successful test of a supersonic 'Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator' (IAD). The IAD was indigenously designed by ISRO's lead facility, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre(VSSC), and was realised by the Indian industry. WION spoke to Dr S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, regarding the significance of this test; what went into the making, and the potential this technology holds.

Traditionally, rocket scientists think of ways and means to have their rockets travel faster and do so more efficiently. However, when it comes to performing interplanetary missions and recovering spent rocket stages(re-usability), it is crucial to slow down a rocket/spacecraft. The rocket stages that are re-entering earth's atmosphere travel at supersonic speeds and spacecraft entering other planets travel at hypersonic speeds.

The commonly used technology to slow down a descending spacecraft/rocket is the firing of a retro-rocket. Simply put, when a rocket is on the ground its engines are fired to lift it off and it functions like a typical rocket. In the case of re-entry, the rocket is travelling at high speeds owing to the energy added by its propulsion system and gravitational pull on its mass.&nbsp;

So, the same engines used for lift-off are fired again to slow it down to a suitable speed for landing. The IAD aims to do something similar without firing rocket engines. It just uses friction or aerodynamic drag.

"IAD is an inflatable structure made of kevlar fabric, coated with Polychloroprene. As the IAD is made of fabric, it can be packed into a small volume of 15litres and can be packed into the nosecone of RH300 rocket (which was used for the test). Once the test rocket reaches an altitude of about 84kilometre, the IAD is deployed and begins to slow down the rocket body(the component known as the payload part) as it undergoes atmospheric re-entry and finally splashes down in the sea" explained Dr Nair.

He added that the inflation of the IAD was carried out by compressed nitrogen gas stored in a gas bottle. Once the IAD falls into the sea, it is deflated by firing a pyro valve to prevent it from floating and thereby causing any harm to sea vehicles.&nbsp;

Notably, this is the first time that an IAD is designed specifically for spent stage recovery. The IAD has huge potential in a variety of space applications like recovery of spent stages of the rocket, landing payloads on Mars or Venus, and making space habitats for human space flight missions.

"This demonstration opens a gateway for cost effective spent stage recovery using the IAD technology. This technology can also be used in ISRO's future missions to Venus and Mars" said Dr S Somanath, Chairman ISRO, and Secretary DOS, who witnessed the successful launch.

Queried about the scalability of the IAD and the possibility of guided landings, Dr Nair said that it can be scaled up to recover even a spent rocket stage.&nbsp;

"It can be used to systematically decelerate a re-entering vehicle by gradually inflating the decelerator. As such, the IAD is not guided. For sea landing precise guidance is not a must. By suitably sizing the IAD, the need for a retro rocket can be avoided for spent stages of vehicle first stage, where energy of spent stage is comparatively less." said Dr Nair before adding that we are yet to do a scaled-up design.&nbsp;

He mixed in technical details about improvements the company has made on the next version of the engines used for Starship. “So the only remaining issue that we’re aware of is melting the chamber,” Musk said, describing the intense heat generated by the engine. “Just not melting the chamber is very difficult,” Musk continued. “It’s kind of the last remaining challenge. But I think we’re very close to solving that.”

He was hopeful that an environmental review by the Federal Aviation Administration would soon give SpaceX the go-ahead to try a launch to orbit from Boca Chica. “We have gotten sort of a rough indication that there may be an approval in March,” Musk said.

If that occurred, an orbital launch attempt could occur in “a couple of months” or potentially May, he said.

But he also conceded that if the FAA decided a more comprehensive environmental review was needed, SpaceX would shift the launches to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and that would cause a delay of six to eight months in order to modify the launching pad there for the massive Starship.

In addition to the eventual trips to Mars, Starship is to be used by NASA to ferry astronauts from orbit around the moon to the surface of the moon. The company won a $2.9 billion contract for the mission, outcompeting other bidders that included Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and defense contractor Dynetics. The moon landing is scheduled, on paper, for 2025, but it is expected to be delayed. The samples will be gathered and then launched back to Earth in a complex operation in which the Lockheed Martin rocket will be a key element.&nbsp;

The contract for this "Mars Ascent Vehicle" has a potential value of $194 million, according to NASA.

"The pieces are coming together to bring home the first samples from another planet. Once on Earth, they can be studied by state-of-the-art tools too complex to transport into space," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for science at NASA headquarters in Washington.

According to the space agency's plans, a mission will be launched in 2026 at the earliest to send the mini-rocket to Mars, carrying another rover responsible for collecting the samples left behind by Perseverance.&nbsp;

Once the samples are placed in the rocket, it will take off and put them in orbit around Mars. They will then be captured by another vessel sent there to complete the final leg of the journey back to Earth.&nbsp;

This last vessel, as well as the rover that will recover the samples, are being developed under the direction of the European Space Agency.

In a major boost for the Indian private sector, he said that India’s workhorse rocket, the PSLV, would be realised (fabricated) end-to-end by Indian industry and that other rockets were also to be fabricated fully by industry.&nbsp;

NASA will be launching two sounding rockets under its Dynamo-2 mission to team up with a satellite. This will help in studying the giant electric current in Earth’s ionosphere.&nbsp;

Scheduled to be launched on separate days, the two rockets will team up with Nasa’s Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) satellite to advance the understanding of the atmospheric dynamo.&nbsp;

Scott England, a space physicist at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and collaborator for the upcoming Dynamo-2 campaign, said, "It’s a really tricky part of space to get measurements, because the air is much too thin for an aircraft, and yet it's still too dense to fly most spacecraft". He added, "So one way of making these measurements is to fly a rocket through it".

As per NASA, the atmospheric dynamo is a pattern of electrical current that swirls in continent-sized circuits high above our heads.&nbsp;

As it is driven by the Sun, it migrates across the planet, centered wherever the Sun is directly overhead.&nbsp;

Most measurements of the dynamo come from magnetometers on the ground. This monitors how the current disturbs Earth’s magnetic field.&nbsp;

Ground-based measurements have their advantages, including how they can monitor one location for long periods of time, for instance.

The Dynamo-2 rockets will launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia between July 6-20. The two rockets will not be launched on the same day.

As per NASA, the launch window on July 6 runs from 12:15 p.m. to&nbsp;2 p.m. EDT. On July 7-13, the launch window runs from 10 a.m. to&nbsp;2 p.m. EDT and from 8 a.m. to noon EDT on July 14-20.

Live coverage of the launches will begin 20 minutes before the opening of the launch window on the Wallops Youtube Site. The NASA Visitor Center at Wallops will not be open for this mission. The launches may be visible in the mid-Atlantic region.

Pro-Iran groups in Iraq are campaigning for departure of remaining US troops. There are still 2500 US troops deployed in Iraq as part of the international coalition to fight Islamic State group. The Iraqi government declared that fight won in late 2017.

To prepare for the mission, the crew has undergone more than 6,000 hours of training. This included hundreds of underwater somersaults in full space gear. The mission includes commander Nie Haisheng, who is a decorated air force pilot in the People's Liberation Army and already has experience in two space missions. The remnants of China's biggest rocket crashed into the Indian Ocean near the Maldives on Sunday with no reports of damage, but Beijing was criticised by NASA for its failure to 'meet responsible standards' regarding its space debris.

The bulk of the out-of-control rocket, which had put into orbit the core module of China's planned space station on April 29, was mostly destroyed as it re-entered the atmosphere, China's state media reported.

The Long March-5B vehicle re-entered the atmosphere at 10:24 Beijing time on Sunday, the Chinese Manned Space Engineering office said.

It said debris from the 18-tonne rocket, one of the largest items in decades to have an undirected dive into the atmosphere, landed in the Indian Ocean at a point 72.47 degrees&nbsp;east and 2.65 degrees&nbsp;North. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

There have been intense speculation over where the rocket debris might land, and US officials and other experts warned its return risked potential casualties.

The hurtling debris of the rocket evoked sharp criticism from the US, NASA and international astrophysicists that Beijing has won a reckless gamble the uncontrolled fall of the rocket stroked fears that it may fall into inhabited areas.

The global anxiety over the debris was sparked by remnants of a similar Chinese rocket fell in Ivory Coast last year damaging several homes in villages.

It was the largest craft to crash to Earth since the US space laboratory, Skylab scattered debris over the southern Australian town of Esperance in 1979.

In a statement NASA Administrator Senator Bill Nelson criticised China, saying that it failed to meet responsible standards. "Spacefaring nations must minimise the risks to people and property on Earth of re-entries of space objects and maximise transparency regarding those operations."

US Space Command, meanwhile, simply said the rocket had 're-entered over the Arabian Peninsula'. 
It did not confirm the landing point reported by Chinese media, saying instead that it was 'unknown if the debris [had] impacted land or water'.

State-run Chinese media dismissed the criticism of debris falling in an 'uncontrolled' manner as 'purely false allegation'.

Despite clarification by China's space industry insiders and Foreign Ministry that the probability of the rocket remnants causing harm was extremely low, the Western media outlets and Pentagon, incessantly hyped that the debris was heading back to Earth in an 'uncontrolled'&nbsp;manner, state-run Global Times reported.

It is a 'purely false allegation', it quoted as Chinese analysts as saying.

The so-called "uncontrolled re-entry" of China's rocket debris is a groundless, false accusation, Song Zhongping, an aerospace expert told the Global Times on Sunday.

"It only refers to the loss of propulsion, but in no way means that China has lost track of its flying trajectory and real-time location," Song said.

It is 'completely normal' for rocket debris to return to Earth, and has been a common practice carried out by global participants in the aerospace field, including China, the Global Times report said.
