Several major English soccer figures wrote an open joint letter on Monday backing the creation of an independent regulator for the national game following the Premier League clubs' failed attempt at joining a breakaway Super League.

The letter was signed by former Manchester United defenders Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, former England international Gary Lineker, and others.

The British government last month said the creation of an independent body is on its agenda, along with a review of&nbsp;football&nbsp;and whether the much-criticized Owner's and Director's Test is fit for purpose.

The review will be led by Member of Parliament and former sports minister Tracy Crouch.

"As&nbsp;football&nbsp;fans, we were appalled by the attempt to set up a European Super League,"&nbsp;read. "It was a direct threat to the integrity of the game, destroying the concept of sporting merit and open competition."

Of the 12 European clubs that looked to form a closed European competition, six were from England's Premier League -- Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.

There have been increasing calls for an independent regulator following the row over Project Big Picture, an attempt by the "Big Six" in the Premier League to gain greater control over the game, and the European Super League proposal.

"We welcome the fan-led Government review of the game," the letter added.

"And hope it leads to lasting change on an array of important concerns, including coordinated strategies to deal with racism, supporters' representation within clubs, LGBTQ issues, ticket costs and the distribution of income."

Several major English soccer figures wrote an open joint letter on Monday backing the creation of an independent regulator for the national game following the Premier League clubs' failed attempt at joining a breakaway Super League. The letter was signed by former Manchester United defenders Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, former England international Gary Lineker, and others. The British government last month said the creation of an independent body is on its agenda, along with a review of football and whether the much-criticized Owner's and Director's Test is fit for purpose. The review will be led by Member of Parliament and former sports minister Tracy Crouch. "As football fans, we were appalled by the attempt to set up a European Super League," read. "It was a direct threat to the integrity of the game, destroying the concept of sporting merit and open competition." Of the 12 European clubs that looked to form a closed European competition, six were from England's Premier League -- Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur. There have been increasing calls for an independent regulator following the row over Project Big Picture, an attempt by the "Big Six" in the Premier League to gain greater control over the game, and the European Super League proposal. "We welcome the fan-led Government review of the game," the letter added. "And hope it leads to lasting change on an array of important concerns, including coordinated strategies to deal with racism, supporters' representation within clubs, LGBTQ issues, ticket costs and the distribution of income."

While talking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: "Have you seen Chelsea's stats by the way? Chelsea are my team to win the league next year. Since Tuchel has come in, they are top of almost every category: goals conceded, chances created. What he's done going in there, you can do nothing but give him applause man. It's unbelievable."

Chelsea are currently fighting to cement the UCL spot for next year, whereas, they have progressed into the finals of the coveted European Championship.&nbsp;

Rio Ferdinand also predicted that Timo Werner "will bang" next season despite not performing upto his standards this year. He said: "Werner will bang. Werner will bang next year. It's his first year in the country. People are forgetting he's settling in – during a pandemic by the way. This isn't the easiest settling-in period. He's just come in, he's still got over 10 goals, he's still got over 10 assists by the way. The most goal involvements at the club."

Chelsea are currently in the finals of the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
