While mammoths were known to eat grasses, mastodons were believed to consume twigs, leaves, and other parts of trees and shrubs using their large teeth to crush them.

According to the museum officials, this was the first complete mastodon jaw unearthed in New York over the last 11 years. Over 150 fossils of the extinct species have been found in the state, a third of them being discovered in Orange County, similar to the recent one.

The newly found jaw of the animal provides “a unique opportunity to study the ecology of this magnificent species, which will enhance our understanding of the Ice Age ecosystems from this region,” said Feranec.

Researchers are hoping to carbon-date and analyse the fossil to determine how old was the mastodon. They will also be working to discover the animal’s diet and habitat. The fossil remains are expected to be put on public display sometime next year, according to the museum.

New York man discovers complete mastodon jaw in his backyard

Three-quarters of Earth’s land has become permanently drier in the last three decades, according to a recent research by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which was published on Monday, December 9.

According to the report, drylands now make up 40 per cent of the world’s land, excluding Antarctica. Those areas have turned from humid regions to arid ones, where agricultural activities are no longer possible.

Drylands are regions where most of the rainfall water is lost to evaporation, while only a small 10 per cent is left for the vegetation. According to the study, two-thirds of the land on earth will retain less water by midcentury.

The scientists discovered that the growing aridity between the years 1990 and 2015 in Africa has resulted in a 12 per cent loss in its GDP. In particular, some crops like maize are significantly affected, with yields projected to be halved in Kenya by 2050.

It is predicted that in the next half decade, Africa will see a decline of 16 per cent of its GDP while Asia will witness about 7 per cent.

“Unlike droughts—temporary periods of low rainfall—aridity represents a permanent, unrelenting transformation,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the UN convention to combat desertification (UNCCD).

“Droughts end. When an area’s climate becomes drier, however, the ability to return to previous conditions is lost. The drier climates now affecting vast lands across the globe will not return to how they were, and this change is redefining life on Earth.”

A global conference under the UNCCD in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh that will conclude on Friday, December 13, is halfway through. Despite being one of the world’s most arid countries and a driving force for desertification across the world, Saudi Arabia has shown reluctance till now, including at the UN framework convention on climate change conference of the parties (Cop) in Azerbaijan the previous month.

According to the report by UNCCD Science-Policy Interface (SPI), the UN body for assessing the science of land degradation and drought, human-caused climate change is the primary driver of this shift as the world fails to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions, intensive agriculture, and other human activities. This leads to warming of the planet and affects the rainfall, plant life, and evaporation, leading to increased aridity.

As of 2020, about 30 per cent of the world’s population, which is 2.3 billion people, lived in dryland areas, according to UN SPI. By 2100, the number is expected to double if the carbon emissions are not controlled.

The research team at the National Key Laboratory of Mobile Communications at Southeast University discovered that laying two parallel cables on the inner wall can “leak” electromagnetic signals and help in maintaining a stable connection between smartphones and service providers.

Additionally, the team led by Professor Song Tiecheng found that efficient codes can be used to solve the issue of disturbances in the frequency changes. This method has been verified by computer models for maintaining 5G communication quality during travel. The paper was published in the journal Railway Signalling &amp; Communication last month.

They have started high-speed propulsion on the prototype projects. Many Chinese cities are awaiting permission from Beijing to build the first commercial vacuum tube maglev line.&nbsp;

This “hyperloop” was first proposed by SpaceX founder Elon Musk. This technology can also be used in spacecraft and help lower the cost. However, Musk did not continue the project due to technological and financial constraints.&nbsp;

A recent study has revealed that rents in seven major Indian cities have surged as much as 70 per cent in the last six years, with a significant jump in the last two years. The research conducted by property consultants ANAROCK group revealed a shift in homebuyer preferences, with more people preferring to buy larger properties.

The study polled 7,615 respondents between the ages of 24-78 across 14 Indian cities. The findings showed that 52 per cent of homebuyers in Delhi-NCR opted for 3BHK apartments while 38 per cent preferred 2BHKs.&nbsp;

According to the report, more people now prefer investing in real estate over other assets, with 59 per cent of respondents saying they opt for it over stocks, while 31 per cent preferred investment in stocks.

The report also highlighted the regional buying patterns, with more people in southern India preferring residential plots, when compared to those in northern and western Indian regions.

As per the findings, around one-third of homebuyers in the southern Indian cities of Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad said that they prefer buying residential plots. On the other hand, 70 per cent of buyers in northern and western Indian regions like Delhi-NCR and Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) said they preferred apartments.

More people buy properties for personal use rather than investments, the research found. Out of the investors, 57 per cent buy properties for rental income and 20 per cent buy for reselling after appreciation in value.

The National Zoo wrote while explaining the name of the female panda, “Qing Bao's name means 'green' and 'treasure' in Mandarin Chinese. 'Qing' evokes the lush and mountainous habitat of pandas. 'Bao,' which means 'precious' and 'treasure,' reflects how cherished and adored she is.”

The pandas will remain in quarantine for a month till they get acclimated to their new home and&nbsp;will be open to view for the public in January.

<h2>An agreement between China and US</h2>

The pandas will remain in the US for a decade-long breeding and research agreement between Beijing&nbsp;and Washington.&nbsp;

Although Bao Li was born in China, he is the offspring of Bao Bao, who was born in the same zoo in 2013. He is the grandchild of Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, who lived in the zoo for nearly 23 years but were moved to China last fall, where their youngest cub resides.

However, since the species became endangered in 1982, China has shifted to lending pandas to some countries for diplomatic reasons instead of gifting them.

In the harrowing footage, the plane is seen shaking violently amid heavy turbulence.

The video tries to capture the side window view of the Lockheed WP-3D Orion aircraft “Miss Piggy” in which the aircraft is seen flying within an impenetrable grey sky as heavy rains pound it.

“Bumpy ride into Hurricane&nbsp;#Milton&nbsp;on@NOAA&nbsp;WP-3D Orion,” wrote the NOAA Aircraft Operations Centre in a post on X.

The researchers at Stanford University believe&nbsp;that the technique would have many potential applications in humans, from finding veins for drawing blood to locating injuries and spotting tumours.

Dr Guosong Hong, a senior researcher, said, “Instead of relying on invasive biopsies, doctors might be able to diagnose deep-seated tumours by simply examining a person’s tissue without the need for invasive surgical removal.” He added, “This technique could make blood draws less painful by helping phlebotomists easily locate veins under the skin.”

This technique is very similar to Griffin’s technique in The Invisible Man(1897), in which the scientist said that the secret to invisibility lies in matching an object’s refractive index and the ability to bend light.&nbsp;

For example, when light passes through our tissues, it gets scattered because of the different refractive indices of fatty membranes and cell nuclei. However, as light moves from one refractive index to another, it tends to bend, making tissue non-transparent.&nbsp;

For example, if you mix blue pen ink in water, the more ink you add, the less light can pass through the water,” He added, “In our experiment when we dissolve tartrazine in an opaque material like muscle or skin, which normally scatters light, the more tartrazine we add, the clearer the material becomes. But only in the red part of the light spectrum. This goes against what we typically expect with dyes.”

The researchers have tagged the procedure as “reversible and repeatable”, with skin becoming normal once the dye is washed. At the moment, transparency is subject to the depth the dye penetrates, but Hong suggested that injections or microneedle patches could let the dye penetrate more deeply.&nbsp;

The procedure is yet to be tested on humans. The researchers need to ensure that the dye is safe for humans, especially, through micro-needling or injections.&nbsp;

"To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels," Bushman said. "Despite what popular wisdom may suggest, even going for a run is not an effective strategy because it increases arousal levels and ends up being counterproductive."

Inspired by the "rage rooms" to pursue this study, first author Sophie Kjærvik, a communication scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, wanted to debunk the theory of expressing anger to cope with it.

"We wanted to show that reducing arousal, and actually the physiological aspect of it, is really important," explained Kjærvik.&nbsp;

The team also focused on the cognitive aspects, examining cognitive behavioural therapy, which can be one way of defusing rage. However, they may not be effective for everyone.

"It was really interesting to see that progressive muscle relaxation and just relaxation in general might be as effective as approaches such as mindfulness and meditation," Kjærvik said.

It was discovered that arousal-boosting activities did not reduce anger, while some, like jogging, even increased it. Researchers suggest exertion may be more beneficial if the activity is fun like ball sports.

"It's really a battle because angry people want to vent, but our research shows that any good feeling we get from venting actually reinforces aggression," said Bushman.

While further study is needed to confirm these findings, researchers recommended calming techniques to be the best option to tone down temper.

This surprising finding could pave the way for new treatments, particularly for head and neck cancers.

The study, led by Dr Miguel Reis Ferreira, a consultant in head and neck cancers, revealed that "In essence, we found that when you find these bacteria within head and neck cancers, they have much better outcomes."

"The other thing that we found is that in cell cultures, this bacterium is capable of killing cancer."

Researchers were "brutally surprised" by the bacteria's apparent ability to kill cancer cells, prompting further investigation into the biological mechanisms behind this phenomenon.

"What we're finding is that this little bug is causing a better outcome based on something that it's doing inside the cancer. So we are looking for that mechanism at present, and it should be the theme for a new paper in the very short-term future," he added, as reported by The Guardian.

"This research reveals that these bacteria play a more complex role than previously known in their relationship with cancer—that they essentially melt head and neck cancer cells. However, this finding should be balanced by their known role in making cancers such as those in the bowel get worse."

Laboratory studies supported this, showing a dramatic reduction in viable cancer cells after exposure to the bacteria. In some cases, the number of cancer cells dropped by 70 to 99 per cent within a few days.

Patients with fusobacterium in their cancer had a 65 per cent lower risk of death compared to those without the bacteria. This significant finding suggests that fusobacterium could play a crucial role in future cancer treatments.

Dr Anjali Chander, the study's lead author, described the discovery as a "eureka moment" validated by international colleagues. The research team is now focused on understanding the exact mechanism by which fusobacterium kills cancer cells, with plans to publish more detailed findings soon.

To arrive at the conclusion, the researchers collected data from 51 studies (some conducted over decades)&nbsp;that analysed how the narcissism levels amongst an individual changed over time. As many as 37,247 participants with age groups ranging from eight to 77 took part in the study.&nbsp;

The researchers looked for three types of narcissists viz.&nbsp;Agentic narcissists (feelings of grandiosity),&nbsp;Antagonistic narcissists (arrogance, entitlement) and Neurotic narcissists (emotional dysregulation, hypersensitivity).

They studied the participants from the three types, based on questionnaires, and found that, generally, narcissism scores declined with age.

“These findings have important implications given that high levels of narcissism influence people’s lives in many ways—both the lives of the narcissistic individuals themselves and, maybe even more, the lives of their families and friends,” lead author Ulrich Orth at&nbsp;the University of Bern in Switzerland told journal Psychological Bulletin.
