But the world is not on pace to reach the goal of tripling renewable capacity by 2030, a target agreed by nearly 200 nations at the UN's COP28 climate summit in Dubai last month, the IEA said.

The COP28 agreement also called for "transitioning away" from fossil fuels, but without setting a timeline and short of a "phase-out" demanded by many nations but opposed by oil giant Saudi Arabia.

Global renewable capacity is expected to increase 2.5 times from 2022 levels by the end of the decade, the agency's annual report on the sector found.

"It's not enough yet to reach the COP28 goal of tripling renewables, but we're moving closer –- and governments have the tools needed to close the gap," IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said.

Birol said onshore wind and solar panels were less expensive now than fossil fuel plants in most countries.

"The most important challenge for the international community is rapidly scaling up financing and deployment of renewables in most emerging and developing economies," he said.

"Success in meeting the tripling goal will hinge on this," Birol added.

<h2>All-time highs</h2>

The agency, which advises developed countries on energy policy, said renewable capacity reached almost 510 gigawatts last year, with solar photovoltaics (PV) accounting for three-quarters of additions worldwide.

China commissioned as much solar PV last year as the entire world did in 2022, while the country's wind power additions rose by 66 percent year-on-year.

Increases in Europe, the United States and Brazil "also hit all-time highs", the energy watchdog said.

Prices for solar PV devices fell by 50 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year.

The IEA said costs are expected to fall further as global manufacturing capacity is forecast to significantly exceed demand by the end of 2024.

The wind industry, however, is facing "a more challenging environment due to a combination of ongoing supply chain disruption, higher costs and long permitting timelines", the report said.

Dave Jones, global insights programme director at the Ember think tank, said the sector's 2023 growth "makes it clear that a tripling of renewables is entirely achievable".

"We are increasingly on track not only for a peaking of fossil fuel use this decade, but for sizable falls in fossil fuel use," Jones said.

"2024 will be the year that renewables changed from a nuisance for the fossil fuel industry, to an existential threat," he added.

Dean Cooper, global energy lead at conservation group WWF, said renewable energy generation was increasing "fast but not fast enough".

The band, which has Chris Martin as its frontman, is currently playing a four-night residency at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium. 
 
The band has stated that since the time they started their Music of The Spheres World Tour in March 2022, they have produced 4 per cent less CO2 emissions than their previous tour in 2016-17.&nbsp; 
 
The band said, "This is a good start, and something that our incredible crew should be very proud of."

"But clearly there's still room for improvement. Now that we're into the second year of the tour, we've started to run the entire show (audio, lights, lasers etc) from an electric battery system that allows us to use 100 per cent renewable energy as efficiently as possible."

"We have been using electric vehicles and alternative fuels wherever we can, as well as reducing waste and plastic usage to a minimum. Thank you to all the brilliant people and creative minds who've helped us."

In their shows, fans help charge the batteries by riding power bikes and moving on kinetic dance floors. The band's green efforts were praised by Professor John E Fernandez of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He said, "We fully endorse this effort as critically important, scientifically rigorous and of the highest quality."

How are Coldplay concerts eco-friendly? With the help of renewable energy

The war in Ukraine has led to multiple economic sanctions on Russia, disrupting the global oil supply. A recent report, however, suggests there&nbsp;may have been an inadvertent&nbsp;positive impact of the&nbsp;ongoing geopolitical situation.

According to the International Energy Agency's World Energy Investment 2023 report, the war, which began on February 24 last year, has "accelerated momentum behind the deployment of a range of clean energy technologies."

Annual investment&nbsp;into clean energy is expected to rise by 24 percent between 2021 and 2023, driven by Western countries trying to reduce their dependency on Russian energy supply. In the same period, investments in fossil fuels rose by 15 percent.

According to IEA's estimates, around $2.8 trillion will be invested in the energy sector this year, more than $1.7 trillion out of it going into clean energy.

Clean energy investments primarily go towards renewable power and electric vehicles, with low-emission fuels, efficiency improvements, end-use renewables and grids also attracting significant investments.

Notably, more money has been invested in clean energy than in fossil fuels since 2018, and the gap is widening. "For every $1 spent on fossil fuels, $1.7 is now spent on clean energy. Five years ago this ratio was 1:1," the global energy watchdog's report noted.

Solar - the 'star performer'

The IEA report has called solar as "star performer", arguing that solar investments will lead the ongoing revolution in low-emissions electricity technologies. Over $1 billion per day is expected to go into solar investments in 2023. In overall terms, investments worth $380 billion will go into the sector.

This is significant, as investments into solar power will outpace that in oil production for the first time his history. Fossil fuels, of which oil is a significant part, will attract over $1 trillion in investments this year.

"Historically, fossil fuels have dominated the energy sector. The fact that investments into solar has now surpass those into fossil fuels is a indication and validation of the growing recognition and potential and viability of renewable energy sources," Anand Jain, founder and CEO of&nbsp;Aerem, an Indian solar tech start-up, told wionnews.com.

The shift in the investment pattern&nbsp;highlights the growing awareness of the threat posed by carbon emissions by fossil fuels, which contributes to climate change and rising global temperatures.

However, investment into renewable energy, primarily solar, has been lopsided, with advanced economies and China accounting for majority of the&nbsp;investments in the last two years. As per an IEA&nbsp;estimate, solar PVs -- they are used to power panels --&nbsp;make&nbsp;up almost half of new investment in renewable power.&nbsp;

The unequal distribution of clean energy investment threatens to create deep divisions in global energy supply and deprive developing and less developed countries of clean energy.

Jain advocates a two-pronged approach to encourage increasing use of solar power in the global energy matrix. "Government measures like phasing out subsidies for fossil fuels and implementing carbon pricing mechanisms must be complimented with public awareness initiatives about the environmental consequences of conventional energy sources," he said.

Annual investment into clean energy is expected to rise by 24 percent between 2021 and 2023, driven by Western countries trying to reduce their dependency on Russian energy supply. In the same period, investments in fossil fuels rose by 15 percent. According to IEA's estimates, around $2.8 trillion will be invested in the energy sector this year, more than $1.7 trillion out of it going into clean energy. Clean energy investments primarily go towards renewable power and electric vehicles, with low-emission fuels, efficiency improvements, end-use renewables and grids also attracting significant investments. Notably, more money has been invested in clean energy than in fossil fuels since 2018, and the gap is widening. "For every $1 spent on fossil fuels, $1.7 is now spent on clean energy. Five years ago this ratio was 1:1," the global energy watchdog's report noted. Solar - the 'star performer' The IEA report has called solar as "star performer", arguing that solar investments will lead the ongoing revolution in low-emissions electricity technologies. Over $1 billion per day is expected to go into solar investments in 2023. In overall terms, investments worth $380 billion will go into the sector. This is significant, as investments into solar power will outpace that in oil production for the first time his history. Fossil fuels, of which oil is a significant part, will attract over $1 trillion in investments this year. "Historically, fossil fuels have dominated the energy sector. However, investment into renewable energy, primarily solar, has been lopsided, with advanced economies and China accounting for majority of the investments in the last two years. As per an IEA estimate, solar PVs -- they are used to power panels -- make up almost half of new investment in renewable power. The unequal distribution of clean energy investment threatens to create deep divisions in global energy supply and deprive developing and less developed countries of clean energy. Jain advocates a two-pronged approach to encourage increasing use of solar power in the global energy matrix. "Government measures like phasing out subsidies for fossil fuels and implementing carbon pricing mechanisms must be complimented with public awareness initiatives about the environmental consequences of conventional energy sources," he said.

Air contains enormous amounts of electricity and clouds - which are masses of water droplets and each droplet contains a charge which can produce a lightning bolt. Up until now, we didn't know how to reliably capture that electricity from lightning. However, the study published in the journal Advanced Materials says we can use a broad range of inorganic, organic, and biological materials to capture it. Essentially, the researchers have created a small-scale cloud that produces electricity. As long as the device includes holes smaller than 100 nanometers, it can be used to generate electricity. The scientists discovered a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium that uses the atmosphere as an energy source to generate electrical current. It was started after a summit between US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985. Despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Moscow has managed to keep its end of the bargain connected to the project. The Pune-based Indian multinational wind turbine manufacturer confirmed the death in an official statement. "In this difficult time, the company continues to be supported by its highly experienced board of directors and senior management who are both able and committed to taking Shri Tanti's legacy forward and realise his vision for the company."

Suzlon Energy's CEO Ashwani Kumar&nbsp;addressed the employees in a letter saying, "This is by far the most heart-breaking communication I have ever sent..."
