<h2>What happened?</h2>

The attack on what is reported to be a Norwegian-flagged tanker STRINDA took place around 111 kilometres north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden around 2100 GMT, a US official told Reuters.&nbsp;

A second US official told the news agency that the ship was able to move under its own power in the hours after the attack. “The STRINDA reported damage causing a fire on-board, but no casualties at this time,” said the CENTCOM, which oversees American forces in the Middle East.

The STRINDA is a Norway-flagged chemical tanker and is owned by Mowinckel Chemical Tankers, according to Reuters. The report citing data from ship tracking firm Kpler said that the STRINDA had loaded vegetable oil and biofuels in Malaysia and was headed for Venice, Italy.&nbsp;

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said that it received reports of an entity declaring itself to be the Yemeni navy ordering a vessel to alter course to an unspecified Yemeni port, on Tuesday (Dec 12).&nbsp;

Since the beginning of December, several commercial vessels have come under attack in international waters prompting the US Navy destroyers stationed in the region to intervene.&nbsp;

A Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, M/V Number 9, also reported some damage to the vessel but didn't report any casualties after a missile attack from Yemen. M/V Sophie II, which also has Panama’s flag, said it was struck as well but reported no significant harm.

US shoots down drones, assists multiple commercial vessels attacked in Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthis

An Israeli billionaire-owned container ship was attacked in the Indian Ocean by drones suspected to have been launched by Iran.

On Friday, CMA CGM’s ship Symi came under the attack of a triangle-shaped, bomb-carrying Shahed-136 drone while in international waters, an American defence official told AP news agency.

Though the vessel suffered damages, there were no injuries to the crew.

“We continue to monitor the situation closely,” the official was quoted as saying.

<h2>Minimal damage to ship</h2>

The news was later confirmed by Al-Mayadeen, a pan-Arab satellite channel that is politically allied with the Iranian-backed Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

According to The Times of Israel, the damage caused to the ship was minimal.

It reported that the ship had no ties with Israel as Symi is leased to CMA CGM by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, which is a company ultimately controlled by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.

“The attack is likely to have been targeted, due to the vessel’s Israeli affiliation through Eastern Pacific Shipping,” the private intelligence firm Ambrey told the AP.

“The vessel’s AIS transmissions were off days prior to the event, indicating this alone does not prevent an attack.”

A statement issued on behalf of Eastern Pacific acknowledged the company being "aware of claims that a container ship under the company's management was targeted in a possible security incident overnight on Friday."

"The vessel in question is currently sailing as planned," the statement said. "All crew are safe and well."

The attack comes at a&nbsp;time when the whole Gulf region finds itself in turmoil amid the Israel-Hamas war. Iranian-backed rebels like Houthis and Hezbollah have been launching attacks on Israel, and US vessels that were deployed after the war.

"The vessel in question is currently sailing as planned," the statement said. "All crew are safe and well." Six injured as explosions rock Egyptian Red Sea towns, Israel blames Houthi rebels

The US Navy said that over 3,000 American military personnel have recently arrived in the Red Sea in two warships, in a purported response to Iran's alleged actions involving tanker seizures.

This increased US deployment follows a series of incidents over the past two years in which the West accused Iran of attempting to control nearly 20 international ships in the region.

The US military personnel&nbsp;arrived on board the USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall warships, with an aim to&nbsp;provide "greater flexibility and maritime capability" to the Fifth Fleet, the statement from the Bahrain-based command said.

Since 2015, the UN and the Huthis have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition backing the internationally recognised government based in the southern Yemeni city of Aden. Three previously missing British tourists have been reported dead after a motor yacht caught fire in Egypt’s Red Sea, on Sunday (June 11). The deaths were confirmed a day later by a spokesperson for&nbsp;Scuba Travel.&nbsp; 
 
The British Foreign Office had previously said&nbsp;they are in contact with the local authorities after the incident and supporting those&nbsp;involved.&nbsp;

A statement by the Red Sea governorate said, “15 English passengers, 10 members of the crew, and two tour guides” had been rescued while the search for three people missing was underway. Furthermore, the officials also said that the survivors were brought to safety in the nearby diving resort of Marsa Shagra which is about 21 kilometres from the town of Marsa Alam.&nbsp;

The condition of those rescued was not immediately clear. Images and videos of the incident show a white motor yacht named ‘Hurricane’ with flames erupting from it and thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Kuwaiti tourist Abdulrahman A. Alsarheed, an eyewitness to the incident, as per Reuters said&nbsp;flames engulfed the boat’s tail in a “matter of minutes” and said that their&nbsp;yacht took 12 tourists on board along with the crew.&nbsp;Alsarheed was said to be on a water safari at the same time of the incident.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for Scuba Travel, the tour operator for the trip, confirmed the deaths and said “It is with great regret that we, as tour operator, with heavy hearts, must accept that three of our much-valued dive guests, perished in the tragic incident. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to their families and friends at this very sad time.”&nbsp;

The spokesperson also said that the three British tourists were among the 15 “qualified diving enthusiasts” and a part of the week-long stay on board the ship when the fire broke out at about 8:30 am (local time).&nbsp;

“At the time the fire broke out, 12 divers were participating in a briefing on board, while those missing had apparently decided not to dive that morning,” said the spokesperson, in a statement. It added, given the “severity of the fire” the 12 divers present at the briefing were immediately evacuated to another boat nearby.&nbsp;

<h2>Do we know what caused the fire?</h2>

According to the statement from the Red Sea State governor’s office the boat which had been on a trip since June 6 in an area just north of Marsa Alam caught on fire after an electrical short circuit. The boat in question was on a six-day cruise and due back Sunday when it caught on fire some 25 kilometres north of Marsa Alam.

The Red Sea is said to be a major tourist destination in Egypt which contributes more than 10 per cent to the country’s GDP while the sector employs two million people.&nbsp;

Last week, a Russian tourist was killed off at one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada.

This incident prompted the closure of the 74 km stretch of the coastline with officials&nbsp;announcing it would remain off-limits until Sunday.&nbsp;Egypt’s environment ministry later said that they have caught the shark and are examining the reasons for this rare attack.&nbsp;

The Iranian Navy reportedly seized two US unmanned drone vessels for a brief period in the Red Sea before releasing them, in the second such incident this week.&nbsp;

According to state TV, the Iranian navy's "Jamaran destroyer encountered several American military unmanned research vessels on the international shipping route on Thursday while carrying out a counter-terrorism mission in the Red Sea.”

It added that the navy, "after warning an American destroyer twice, seized the two drone vessels to prevent possible accidents".

The navy then released two vessels in a safe area after securing the passage of international shipping, the state broadcaster said, while airing the clip of the two purported US vessels being released by Iranian forces on board a ship, AFP reported.

Confirming the development, the US Navy said its drone vessels were taking pictures of the surrounding environment and had been in the vicinity of the southern Red Sea for more than 200 days.

"At around 2 pm (local time) on Sept. 1, U.S. 5th Fleet detected the Iranian ship approaching both unmanned vessels and removing them from the water," the US Navy said in a statement.

The statement added that the two destroyers operating nearby—the USS Nitze and USS Delbert D. Black—"remained on scene communicating with the Iranian warship to de-escalate the situation".

The statement further stated that the US Navy vessels were released at around 8 am the following day.

The recent incident comes in the backdrop of nuclear negotiations with Iran that appear to be faltering.

The US said it received Iran's response to the European Union's framework to restore the nuclear deal, but officials in a statement termed Iran's response as " not constructive."&nbsp;

The pools lack the typical creatures that inhabit and survive on the seabed, such as burrowing shrimp, worms, and mollusks, because the brine lacks oxygen. Typically, these creatures "bioturbate" or "churn up" the seafloor, upsetting the sediments that build up there, according to Purkis. "Not so with the brine pools. Here, any sedimentary layers that settle to the bed of the brine pool remain exquisitely intact."

In addition to records of earthquakes and tsunami, the core samples that the researchers took from the newly discovered brine lakes "represent an unbroken record of past rainfall in the region, stretching back more than 1,000 years," said Purkis.
