Global climate change is mostly caused by carbon dioxide emissions. It is widely acknowledged that if the world is to avoid the worst effects of climate change, emissions must be reduced rapidly.

For example, New South Wales (NSW) became the first Australian state to begin classifying carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases as pollutants, forcing polluters to come up with plans to reduce emissions.&nbsp;

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) of NSW began its eight-week draught climate change policy and related action plan. This is regarded as the first step towards requiring polluters to net zero emissions by the year 2050. The agency would start an in-depth discussion with each economic sector about how they would reduce emissions and show that they are ready for a potential climate impact.

EPA's new chief, Tony Chappel, said, "The big issue here is that an Australian government is moving to comprehensively cover [carbon dioxide] and equivalent emissions as a pollutant." He further added, "[The plan would] give regulatory teeth to its net zero commitment to ensure that the whole economy moves on that path efficiently and effectively," the Guardian reported.&nbsp;

The EPA's strategy might serve as a model for the other states. According to Chappel, the state's objective of reducing emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 is a crucial step towards becoming neutral by the middle of the century.

Chappel, pointing to NSW, said, "have a new wave of prosperity and another sort of … mining boom in that we’re mining the sun and the wind, and producing hydrogen, ammonia and green steel, and regenerating the landscape to produce agriculture sustainably."

He stated that the industry and community are already paying a high price for the intensity of emissions caused by climate change effects such as bushfires, floods, and other extreme weather.

The chief said that nearby landfills are also majorly damaged, and in order for this initiative to minimise it, and is an urgent need to minimise it.&nbsp;

New South Wales becomes the first state to classify carbon emissions & other greenhouse gases as pollutants

A new study has revealed that even low levels of pollution can be extremely harmful and, in the long run, cause considerable health damage. The research, which was carried out in Canada, found that around 8000 people in the country die every year because of air pollution. It came as a surprise as Canada has generally accounted for extremely low levels of pollution in the past few decades. &nbsp;

The study took into account more than 7 million Canadian citizens between the years 1981 and 2016 along with the air pollution data in the same period of time. The aim was to find out whether the low air pollution levels caused less damage, but the death toll hinted at a different reality.

&nbsp;“These findings suggest important health benefits could be gained from continued reductions in air pollution and more stringent regulatory standards, including in countries such as Canada and the UK,” Prof Michael Brauer from the University of British Columbia, told The Guardian.

“Considering that we don’t identify a ‘safe’ level of air pollution, we should rethink our approach and focus on continued reductions year by year, rather than just setting fixed concentration standards that are only reviewed every five to 10 years. The health impacts are far too large,” he added.

The US Health Effects Institute, which funded the study, also commissioned two other researchers which looked into the air pollution in parts of Europe. Both of the studies also concluded that there are no permissible amounts of air pollution that is not harmful to the health of individuals.

Low levels of pollution also cause major health damage, study finds

An internet initiative named Birds and Debris received photos from contributors from all over the world.

According to the project's experts, they frequently observe birds caught in various objects, such as rope, fishing line, balloon ribbon, and flip-flops, where they are either nesting or entangled.

<img alt="This photograph of a duck with a mask around its neck was taken by Mary Caporal Prior in the United States" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="cf1b6f89-ab0a-4133-8533-c402e41b4057" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/_126188153_mediaitem126188152.jpg" />

This photograph of a duck with a mask around its neck in the US. Clicked by: MARY CAPORAL&nbsp;

Birds are depicted nesting or tangling in disposable face masks in about a quarter of the photos.

The project's main objective is to document how garbage, especially plastic pollution, affects the avian community.

According to Dr. Alex Bond, a researcher with the Natural History Museum in London and one of the study's authors, "basically, if a bird constructs a nest utilising long fibrous materials—like seaweed, branches, or reeds—the odds are it will have human garbage in its nest someplace."

He and his colleagues have been working on this initiative for four years in an effort to raise awareness of the pervasive issue of plastic garbage in the environment.

You'll find this stuff everywhere once you start looking for it, he continued. We received reports from Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, and North America, demonstrating the issue's really worldwide scale.

The team recently conducted research to determine how many photographs submitted contain personal protective equipment connected to the epidemic (PPE). They discovered that it was present in approximately a quarter of the pictures.

"Almost everything is a mask," Dr. Bond stated. "And if you consider the various components that go into making a surgical mask, you might consider the elastic that gets twisted around the legs of birds or the hard piece of plastic that holds it over your nose that may cause injury to birds trying to consume it.

So, even though we refer to a variety of different polymers collectively as "plastic," masks are a fantastic example of that.

According to the researchers, they want to draw attention to the "systemic problem" that causes such a large amount of waste to enter the ecosystem.

Justine Ammendolia, the lead researcher from Dalhousie University in Canada, told BBC News that it was "devastating" to witness the scope of the impact on species worldwide.

"It really just demonstrates the harm that humans are capable of imposing on the environment in a very short window of time across the world."

"Changing to a bamboo toothbrush or a canvas shopping bag is not going to save the world, [because] most large-scale plastic production today is commercial and industrial," said Dr Bond.

Did you know that by 2016, nearly 60-90 per cent of the marine area was covered in nearly 14-19 million tonnes of plastic that found their way to the oceans?&nbsp; Are humans to be blamed? Of course yes. Despite numerous awareness campaigns, advisories and regulations, people still appear unable to refrain from discarding the trash into the sea. The majority of people don’t even realise the harm they cause. Recently, a video on Twitter went viral which showed the situation at Mumbai beach in India. It shows the harsh reality and currently has more than 78,000 views, tonnes of comments, and hundreds of retweets, India Today reported.

A video posted on July 16 by Mumbaimatterz Twitter account, provides a bird-eye view of Mumbai’s Mahim beach, covered in trash. The captions states, “Citizens throng Mahim beach to have a look at the return gift from the Arabian Sea.”

India, the second most polluted country in the world is already having a deadly impact on the people. Indians are losing at least five years as a result of pollution. The average life expectancy has taken a hit due to the kind of the air that the residents are breathing

Pollution becomes greatest threat to human health in India

In the face of strong conservative opposition, European&nbsp;Parliament&nbsp;lawmakers on Wednesday narrowly voted to back a European&nbsp;Commission proposal for a total ban on new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035.

The Commission last year unveiled plans to stop the sale of vehicles using internal combustion engines as part of an ambitious climate target to cut emissions by more than half over this decade and 90 per cent by 2035.

The measure passed by 339 votes to 249 with 24 abstentions at a session in Strasbourg -- in practice limiting future sales to emissions-free all-electric models.

Cars currently account for 12 percent of all CO2 emissions in the 27-member&nbsp;EU&nbsp;bloc, while transportation overall accounts for around a quarter.

The conservative European People's Party (EPP), the&nbsp;parliament's biggest group of lawmakers, had sought to push a compromise that would have diluted the proposals and allowed sales of hybrid vehicles to continue.

Their amendment was narrowly defeated while an ambitious attempt by the Greens to bring the measure deadline forward to 2030 also failed.

Conservatives were also unable to push through amendments on having a car's production-related carbon footprint taken into consideration as well -- potentially allowing carmakers credits for synthetic, so-called e-fuels, made with captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced from renewable sources.

In the face of strong conservative opposition, European Parliament lawmakers on Wednesday narrowly voted to back a European Commission proposal for a total ban on new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035.

In the face of strong conservative opposition, European Parliament lawmakers on Wednesday narrowly voted to back a European Commission proposal for a total ban on new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035. Also read | European Union agrees for 40% women quotas on corporate boards to enhance gender equality Cars currently account for 12 percent of all CO2 emissions in the 27-member EU bloc, while transportation overall accounts for around a quarter. The conservative European People's Party (EPP), the parliament's biggest group of lawmakers, had sought to push a compromise that would have diluted the proposals and allowed sales of hybrid vehicles to continue. Their amendment was narrowly defeated while an ambitious attempt by the Greens to bring the measure deadline forward to 2030 also failed. Watch | Gravitas: EU to introduce 'universal charger' by 2024 Conservatives were also unable to push through amendments on having a car's production-related carbon footprint taken into consideration as well -- potentially allowing carmakers credits for synthetic, so-called e-fuels, made with captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced from renewable sources. After the vote, EU environmental committee chair Pascal Canfin triumphantly tweeted: "100 percent zero emission cars in 2035! I strongly welcome the vote on CO2 standards in the @Europarl_EN. This position of the European Parliament is an important victory and consistent with our objective of climate neutrality." 100% zero emission cars in 2035 ! Here's a question for you, do you wake up coughing and sneezing every morning? If the answer to that is a resounding yes, then you're one of the countless victims of allergy season.

Breathing clean air has now become a luxury for most of us. Pollution levels are rising globally but in India, the problem is more severe than ever before. A Lancet study recently found that pollution led to more than 2.3 million premature deaths in India in 2019.

So, what do we do? Do we lock ourselves in a room, shut the doors and windows and hope to take a deep, fresh breath of air? Think again. Poor indoor air quality is now becoming a menace that we all have to contend with. The onslaught of allergy season is leading to more respiratory issues among urban professionals than ever before.

Enter the air purifier. Over the last five years, air purifiers have transitioned from being a luxury to a necessity. Homes, offices, hotels, spas, schools and other institutions are all stocking up on air purifiers.

Dyson has been making inroads into the Indian market with its sleek, expensive products across segments. Its air purifiers make big claims and have become fixtures in upwardly mobile homes and hotel chains given their steep price tag.&nbsp;

The company's latest air purifier, the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 promises to combat the elements in the air around you. Let's get the exorbitant price tag out of the way. The Dyson is priced at a whopping 52,900 rupees and is one of the more expensive offerings in the segment.

But does it live up to its claim and the heavy price tag? Here's our review.

Desgin&nbsp;

In trademark Dyson style, the air purifier looks nothing like an air purifier. The plastic unibody is sleek and elegant. The golden grilles at the bottom are removable and house the air filters. It comes with a LCD screen which provides you all-important details about fan speed, filter life, and of course the Air Quality Index or AQI inside the room. You'll be shocked to know that the air quality inside your bedroom isn't great either!

There is a power button to switch the purifier on or off on the body of the TP09 but I would suggest you make use of the sleek remote to operate the air purifier from a distance. Or better yet, sync the device with the Dyson Link mobile application which will help you control your device from anywhere in the house. This worked well for me especially with a toddler running around.&nbsp;

The Dyson TP09 blends seamlessly into the interiors of your home and its slender body doesn't come in the way.

Syncs with the Dyson link app

The Dyson Link App is a useful one, especially if you like to control your devices through a common platform. It senses any Dyson product which may be nearby and pairs with it easily in around 5 minutes. From that point on, you can use the app to increase the fan speed, switch your device on or off and even get a sense of the AQI inside your room over a period of time. This will give you an idea of how well the air purifier is working.

Pro tip: take all statistics with a pinch of salt since they may not be 100% accurate. This is the case for all air purifiers across segments.

Does it clean the air in your room?

The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde claims to capture ultrafine dust and allergens. All this sounds great but how do we know if it's actually working? Dyson says the new purifier comes with a Formaldehyde sensing technology.&nbsp;

Let's break it down for you. Essentially, Formaldehyde is a colourless gas pollutant, released by furniture and wooden products containing formaldehyde-based resins like plywood and fibreboard, insulating materials and do-it-yourself products such as paint, wallpapers, varnishes and household cleaning products.&nbsp;

Dyson claims its filter can catch all that and destroy the enemy -- in this case Formaldehyde.

I have been using the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde for more than three weeks. The review coincided with the worst allergy season I have experienced till date. As someone who pops allergy medication daily, I am glad to say that the frequency has considerably reduced when inside the house. On weekends, when I am confined to my room, I hardly sneezed or coughed, much to the relief of those around me.

However, once I stepped out, my allergies came back to haunt me almost instantly. And that has always been the primary argument against air purifiers -- that they trap you inside a bubble of semi-filtered air making it difficult for you to adapt to the miserable air quality outdoors.

But this argument is hard to sustain. Why not give yourself the luxury of clean air if you can afford it?

Another significant observation: this air purifier was able to capture dust from surrounding furniture. While no home can be eternally dust-free, I did notice an improvement in corners where the air purifier was placed.

Let's talk about the "Cooling" feature. It is more of a gimmick given the potency of Indian summers; you can use it for targeted cooling for those hot afternoons when your air conditioner just doesn't cut it.

Another pro tip: keep windows and doors shut tight for the air purification to be optimised. This rule applies to all air purifiers across segments.

Should you buy it?

Should you buy an air purifier which costs more than 50,000 rupees? Depends on your budget. The high price tag alienates a huge section of the population from investing in good-quality air purifiers and this is a challenge that brands need to address in the future.&nbsp;

While most brands have added air purifiers to their portfolios, Dyson's technology is superior to most which is why the price tag raises eyebrows. Go for this air purifier if you or your family is prone to allergies.&nbsp;

After all, you cannot put a price on being able to breathe clean air, right?

How much are you willing to pay for an air purifier?

Covid-19 has killed nearly 6 million people worldwide. But air pollution is killing nearly 9 million people in a year, as per a report in The Lancet. Africa is the worst hit country while India top the list of most deaths due to pollution.

This is killing more people than coronavirus

An estimate of 9 million died due to pollution in 2019 which means one of every 6th death recorded in that year was due to pollution. Since the death rate is so high, it makes pollution at par with smoking which sees more than 8 million deaths annually

1 in 6 deaths due to pollution in 2019, modern pollutants spike deaths

Worsening outdoor air&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;and toxic lead poisoning have kept&nbsp;global&nbsp;deaths from environmental contamination at an estimated 9 million per year since 2015 – countering modest progress made in tackling&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;elsewhere, a team of scientists reported Tuesday.

Air&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;from industry processes along with urbanization drove a 7 per cent&nbsp;increase in&nbsp;pollution-related deaths from 2015 to 2019, according to the scientists’ analysis of data on&nbsp;global&nbsp;mortality and&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;levels.

"We're sitting in the stew pot and slowly burning," said Richard Fuller, a study co-author and head of the&nbsp;global&nbsp;nonprofit Pure Earth. But unlike climate change, malaria, or HIV, "we haven't given (environmental&nbsp;pollution) much focus."

An earlier version of the work published in 2017 also estimated the death toll from&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;at roughly 9 million per year — or about one of every six deaths worldwide — and the cost to the&nbsp;global&nbsp;economy at up to $4.6 trillion per year. That puts&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;on par with smoking in terms of&nbsp;global&nbsp;deaths. COVID-19, by comparison, has killed about 6.7 million people&nbsp;globally since the pandemic began.

For their most recent study, published in the online journal Lancet Planetary Health, the authors analyzed 2019 data from the&nbsp;Global&nbsp;Burden of Disease, an ongoing study by the University of Washington that assesses overall&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;exposure and calculates mortality risk.

The new analysis looks more specifically at the causes of&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;– separating traditional contaminants such as indoor smoke or sewage from more modern pollutants, like industrial air&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;and toxic chemicals. Here are some of the key takeaways:

WATER AND INDOOR AIR

Deaths from traditional pollutants are declining&nbsp;globally. But they remain a major problem in Africa and some other developing countries. Tainted water and soil and dirty indoor air put Chad, the Central African Republic and Niger as the three countries with the most&nbsp;pollution-related deaths, according to data adjusted for population.

State programs to cut indoor air&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;and improvements in sanitation have helped to curb death tolls in some places. In Ethiopia and Nigeria, these efforts brought related deaths to drop by two-thirds between 2000 and 2019. Meanwhile, the Indian government in 2016 began offering to replace wood-burning stoves with gas stove connections.

MODERN POLLUTANTS

Deaths caused by exposure to modern pollutants such as heavy metals, agrochemicals and fossil fuel emissions are "just skyrocketing", rising 66% since 2000, said co-author Rachael Kupka, executive director of the New York-based&nbsp;Global&nbsp;Alliance on Health and&nbsp;Pollution.

When it comes to outdoor air&nbsp;pollution, some major capital cities have seen some success, including in Bangkok, China, and Mexico City, the authors said. But in smaller cities,&nbsp;pollution&nbsp;levels continue to climb.

Plastic is among biggest pollutants on our planet. WION tells you how it was once assumed to be the great boon for human life.

Plastic: Beauty and the beast; How can we solve plastic pollution?

For the first time, microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood. The tiny particles have been found by scientists in almost 80% of the people tested. &nbsp;

The particles can travel around the body, shows the finding. These particles may also enter organs. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Although the impact of it on health is yet unknown, the researchers are concerned as microplastics can cause damage to human cells in the laboratory. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Blood samples of 22 anonymous donors were analysed by the scientists. All of these people were healthy adults and plastic particles were found in 17. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Almost half samples contained PET plastic used in making bottles, while one third contained polystyrene, utilised for packaging food and other products and a quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, which is used to come up with plastic carrier bags. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Prof Dick Vethaak, ecotoxicologist, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said, “Our study is the first indication that we have polymer particles in our blood – it’s a breakthrough result. But we have to extend the research and increase the sample sizes, the number of polymers assessed, etc.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

“It is certainly reasonable to be concerned. The particles are there and are transported throughout the body,” Vethaak told the Guardian. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier in November 2021, Pakistan's Lahore was declared the most polluted city globally with Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing over 700. Last month, Karachi became the World's third most polluted city with an AQI of 224 according to Dhaka Tribune.

AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality and is used by government agencies to inform people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. According to multiple studies, breathing polluted air increases a person`s risk of acquiring heart disease, chronic respiratory disorders, lung infections, and cancer.
