The High-level committee, which was recently constituted to examine the practicability of holding simultaneous elections, chaired by former president Ram Nath Kovind, held its very first meeting on Saturday (September 23).

As per a statement, the panel came to a conclusion to invite political parties and the Law Commission, to seek their views on holding synchronised polls in the country.

Earlier this month, the government had instructed the eight-member "high-level" panel to examine and make recommendations at the earliest on the issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities and panchayats.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, Minister of State (Independent Charge) from the Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Rajya Sabha leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission NK Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari attended the meeting. Senior Advocate Harish Salve joined the meeting virtually.

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, was not present in the meeting, the statement noted.

After being named as a member of the panel, Chowdhury had written to Shah, "declining to serve on the committee".

In the meeting, the panel decided to invite recognised national parties, parties having governments in states, those having their representatives in Parliament and other recognised state parties "for seeking suggestions or viewpoints on the issue of simultaneous elections in the country".

In addition to this, the committee will also invite the Law Commission for its suggestions and standpoints on the issue of simultaneous elections, according to a statement issued by the law ministry.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been advocating for "One Nation, One Election", stating that this would save a lot of money and resources.

''It's not only for women's empowerment but the role women have played in the current politics of Jammu and Kashmir. It was important. Women always think better and with all the faithfulness for the society. The quota was demanded for a long time and it's a very beautiful decision for the females. The women in J&amp;K have strong convictions and are always at the forefront. The women played a major role in the last elections and I see a better future after this quota being given to females,'' said Hina Bhat, Vice Chairperson of J&amp;K Khadi &amp; Village Industries Board.&nbsp;

As per the notification, citizens and stakeholders have been granted a seven-day window to provide their objections and suggestions concerning the proposal. The political parties including from the region welcomed the decision to make a huge number of wards reserved for women.&nbsp;

However, political parties like PDP have said that nothing new has been done but it's the old ideas being sold in new bottles. The BJP government has withdrawn the laws which were for the security and empowerment of women, it alleged.&nbsp;

Talking to Reuters, Philip Nash, a street sweeper in Whitechapel, a more run-down area of east London, said, "They (the royals) just take everything from me. They never do a day's work."

"I'd like to see one of them come out here, come sweep this street. Have you known any of them to do a day's work? They are like vampires, sucking my blood," he added.&nbsp;

His sentiments are shared by many Britons who believe that a spectacular ceremony for the royals seemed inappropriate when many are dealing with high inflation that has topped 10 per cent and has sent the cost of energy and food soaring.

Yet another poll found that King Charles III's approval ratings have taken a dip. The poll by Ipsos released in April found that the British King's approval rating fell from 61 per cent in September 2022, to 49 per cent in April 2023.&nbsp;

Another survey from the National Centre for Social Research found that while 55 per cent of the British public consider the monarchy to be important, those who say that its retention is “very important” stood at just 29 per cent, the lowest proportion on record.

The origins of the coronation on Sunday date back around 1,000 years and it is slated to be the biggest ceremonial event since the one staged for King Charles' mother Queen Elizabeth in 1953. The event as per Reuters, will include a display of pageantry and a huge military procession.
