The hastily constructed migrant encampments at the main border crossing into Poland from Belarus were cleared by the Belarusian government Thursday morning, removing, for the moment, a major flashpoint that has raised tensions across Europe.

The patch of land nicknamed “the jungle” only days ago the site of violent clashes between migrants trying to push through the razor wire and Polish security forces blasting them with water cannons was now a wasteland of garbage, abandoned tents and smoldering fires.

Along the tangle of razor wire at the border, there was not a migrant in sight Thursday afternoon. Under the gray gloom of the November sky, a phalanx of Polish soldiers remained in formation, pressing up against the wire.

While the clearing of the camps promised to ease the immediate suffering of those living in freezing conditions, authorities in Belarus offered no indication of where those who flew to the Eastern European country in the hope of building a life in the West would go now that they were being directed away from the border.

Still, on Thursday, a steady stream of people escorted by heavily armed Belarusian security forces, their faces covered by black balaclavas made their way down a half-mile road to a government-run warehouse where they were offered refuge from the mud and the muck.

For Masoud Mahdi, 35, who had spent 11 days in the jungle with his pregnant wife and young daughter, it was enough to just get out of the cold.

“We were living worse than dogs,” he said as he made his way to the warehouse. “Last night was impossible. It was raining and freezing, and we had to leave.”

Still, Mahdi said, he did not want to return to Iraq. He wanted to make it to Germany.

Western leaders believe the crisis at the border was manufactured by the Belarusian government, which lured migrants, mostly on flights from the Middle East, to Belarus with easily obtainable visas and the suggestion of a path across its borders to the European Union.

The flow of migrants into Belarus has been largely cut off as airlines restrict flights from the Middle East and the crowds moving to the border appear to have stopped.

But thousands already in Belarus face an uncertain fate, and the authorities have given little indication of where they might go.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said that 430 Iraqis had registered to return home on a repatriation flight Thursday. But that is only a fraction of the thousands of migrants in Belarus, and there was little sign that most would volunteer to leave. Many expressed hope they could still find a way into the EU. Some said they would simply stay in Belarus, which would present an unexpected challenge for President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus.

Main border crossing with Poland is cleared of migrants

The crisis at European Union's eastern border is only escalating, clashes have broken out at the Poland-Belarus border. Police forces fired tear gas at the migrants after they resorted to stone-pelting.

Poland-Belarus migrant crisis worsens; Police forces fire tear gas, migrants pelt stones

A day after Polish forces used tear gas and water cannons against migrants at Poland-Belarus border, Poland said on Wednesday that migrant crisis could last for months or even years. Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak there were more attempts to cross the border during the night.

Thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, are staying on the border in what the West says is a crisis engineered by Belarus to try to divide the EU and hit back against sanctions.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and his ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin have refuted the allegations. They have criticised the European Union for not taking in the migrants.

"We have to prepare for the fact that the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border will not be resolved quickly. We have to prepare for months or even years," Blaszczak told Poland's Radio Jedynka.

Blaszczak said attempts to cross the border had continued during the night, adding that migrants had used the same "method of attacking the Polish border" as seen on Tuesday at the Bruzgi-Kuznica border crossing.

"The public attention focused on what happened in Kuznica, while smaller groups of migrants tried to break through the Polish border in other sections, also at night," he said.

The border guard service said it had detected 161 illegal crossing attempts on Tuesday, including "two forceful attempts".

Polish police said nine officers, a border guard and a soldier were hurt during Tuesday's clashes -- though no officers were still in hospital on Wednesday.

Belarus and Russia condemned the use of tear gas and water cannon, which came a day after the EU and US said they were expanding sanctions against Belarus.

The West has accused Belarus of luring thousands of migrants, many from Iraq and Syria, with the promise of an easy crossing into the EU and then forcing them to stay at the border.

Eastern EU members Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have all refused to take the migrants, leaving many stranded for weeks in forested borderlands.

Migrant crisis may last for years, says Poland

Last week Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia had nothing to do with the migrant crisis unfolding on the Poland-Belarus border. But on Monday, Moscow and Paris both agreed that there was a need for de-escalation.

Migrant crisis: Is Putin behind Poland-Belarus border crisis?

Amid the escalating crisis, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen warned the EU will expand sanctions on Belarus and will target airlines that support "human trafficking".

Poland: Over 33,000 illegal attempts to cross the border

Polish defence ministry said on Tuesday that the country's forces used tear gas against stone-throwing migrants seeking to cross the border at eastern village of Kuznica.

"Kuznica: migrants attacked our soldiers and officers with rocks and are trying to destroy the fence and cross into Poland. Our forces used tear gas to quell the migrants' aggression," the defence ministry said on Twitter.

In addition to this, water cannons were seen being used at the border near Kuznica. The water cannons were used by Polish forces from their side of the border. In visuals that appeared to have been taken from a drone, Polish water cannons could be seen spraying water through the border fences.

The migrants, massed on the Belarusian side of the border were seen dispersing. Few of them were seen to pick up rocks to throw at the water cannon vehicles.

Meanwhile, Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday he wanted to avoid confrontation over migrants at the Polish border in a crisis that the EU has accused him of orchestrating.

His comments came after the EU and the US vowed to expand sanctions on Belarus this week, with thousands of migrants -- mostly from the Middle East -- camped at the Polish border in freezing temperatures.

Brussels says Belarus's authoritarian leader has lured the migrants to the EU's doorstep, charges that Minsk has denied.

"We cannot let this so-called problem lead to heated confrontation," Lukashenko told a government meeting, according to state news agency Belta.

"The main thing now is to protect our country and our people, and not to allow clashes."

Lukashenko discussed the crisis with Germany's Angela Merkel on Monday, his first phone call with a Western leader since he suppressed mass protests against his rule last year.

Polish forces use tear gas, water cannons on migrants at border

In a statement on Monday, Poland's interior ministry said the construction of a wall along its border with Belarus will begin in December and that it will be completed in the first half of next year.

"The undertaking which we must carry out is absolutely strategic and priority investment for the security of the nation and its citizens," Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said.

According to the ministry, the contracts will be signed by December 15, and construction of the border wall itself will begin later that month, with builders working 24 hours a day in three shifts.

It is estimated that the wall will cost 353 million euros ($407 million) and that it will extend 180 kilometres (112 miles), around half the length of the Poland-Belarus border.

The wall was approved by Parliament last month.

Since the summer, thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East have crossed or attempted to cross the Poland-Belarus border.

In response to the migrant influx, thousands of soldiers have been deployed to the border and a state of emergency has been declared, as well as a razor-wire fence hastily constructed by Poland.

Don't use people as weapons, EU chief diplomat warns Belarus

As the standoff over migrants gathering along the European Union’s eastern flank grew more precarious Thursday, with Polish news media reporting that a 14-year-old boy from Iraq had frozen to death on the Belarus side of the frontier, the language from political leaders on either side of the razor wire ratcheted up.

Western leaders have accused Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus’ autocratic leader, of engineering the crisis — creating a path into European Union countries for migrants from the Middle East.

Thousands of migrants have been escorted to the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia under the watchful eyes of the Belarusian authorities. And once there, they are stranded in bitter cold, prevented from entering the EU or from going back into Belarus. It is, according to Western officials, a hybrid attack with people used as weapons.

In Poland, the government’s hard-line policy and its refusal to allow aid workers or even church doctors near the frontier has played well with its right-wing base among Polish nationalists, who Thursday were holding an annual march through the centre of Warsaw to celebrate Independence Day.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland compared events Thursday to those that cost Poland its statehood more than a century ago. While stressing that the situation now “is not so dramatic,” he said: “What we are dealing with is a new type of war. This is a war in which civilians and media messages are the ammunition.”

Lukashenko reeled off threats to his country’s western neighbours even as the Kremlin, Lukashenko’s main benefactor, said it was working to resolve the situation.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia spoke to Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany for the second day in a row about the crisis, the Kremlin said, but he repeated his desire that European officials speak directly to their Belarusian counterparts — a nonstarter for many in the West who consider Lukashenko’s rule to be illegitimate.

Lukashenko told government officials in a televised meeting Thursday that he had agreed with Russia on patrols by nuclear-capable bombers of the country’s western borders. He also said he could shut down the flow of a major pipeline carrying natural gas from Russia to Western Europe via Belarus if the West escalated sanctions.

“We are warning Europe, and yet they threaten to close the border,” Lukashenko said, according to the Belarusian state news agency. “What if we close off the natural gas headed there? I would recommend the leadership of Poland, the Lithuanians and other brainless people to think before they speak.”

With temperatures dropping below freezing along the Belarusian border with Poland and Lithuania, both members of the European bloc, alarm is growing among aid workers that the number of deaths from exposure will increase sharply. So far, eight people have died, officials say, but the real number could be much higher.

With soldiers sealing off the border zone from news media and aid workers, the reported death of the 14-year-old Kurdish boy could not be confirmed. The boy’s body, according to a report by OKO.press, had been taken away overnight by Belarusian security services.

Poland and Belarus have both barred journalists from entering the border area and are locked in an escalating information war, each blaming the other for a deepening crisis fed by inflammatory statements about the risk of armed conflict.

In a sign of escalating tension, Poland’s defence ministry Thursday reported that its soldiers in the frontier area of Białowieza had fired warning shots into the air the previous day after “a group of several hundred migrants attempted to cross the border by force.” The migrants, the ministry said, threw objects at the soldiers and then tried to destroy a border fence.

Polish border guards said Thursday that 150 migrants had tried to cross the border from Belarus en masse overnight.

Polish officials warned of a possible attempt to “storm” the frontier Thursday evening, noting that Independence Day events scheduled across Poland had spread the security services thin, a situation that could encourage Belarus to push a new wave of people to the border.

Thousands of migrants trapped in limbo, Russia urges EU to talk to Belarus

Belarusian state-run airline on Friday banned citizens from Iraq, Syria and Yemen from boarding incoming Turkey flights at the request of Turkish authorities amid a migrant standoff between Belarus and Poland

“In line with a decision by the … Turkish authorities, citizens of Iraq, Syria, Yemen will not be accepted for transportation on flights from Turkey to Belarus from 12.11.2021,” Belavia said in a statement on Friday.

The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the statement, saying flight tickets to Minsk would not be sold to people from the three countries from Turkey.

The move comes amid tense border stand-off between Belarus and Poland, where thousands of migrants, mostly from war-torn parts of Iraq, Syria and Yemen, fleeing conflict, persecution or poverty are stranded.

NATO also hit out at Minsk, accusing the government of using the migrants as 'political pawns.' The European Union called for fresh sanctions against Belarus. Poland : Protests erupt over abortion law

After the death of a 30-year-old pregnant woman in hospital, protests have sparked across Poland against the abortion law on Saturday. Thousands of protesters chanted, “Her heart was beating too.”

According to the family, the hospital staff refused to provide life-saving healthcare to the woman because they were afraid of breaking the country’s strict abortion law.

Senior opposition politicians, which included European Council former president Donald Tusk, joined the demonstrators.

After being admitted to a hospital in Pszczyna, south-western Poland, Izabela – whose surname has not been made public– wrote in a text message to her mother, “For now, because of the abortion law, I have to stay in bed and they can’t do anything. Alternatively, they will wait for the baby to die or for something to start happening. If it doesn’t, then great, I can expect sepsis.”

The next morning at 4 am, Izabela died. The consultant responsible for Izabela informed her husband, the death was caused by a pulmonary embolism, adding that “sometimes it happens”, the lawyer representing Izabela’s family, Jolanta Budzowska, told the Guardian. Although Izabela died on September 22, her death was made public by the family last week, sparking controversy and protests across Poland.

“Following the tightening of the abortion law in Poland due to the 2020 ruling of the constitutional tribunal, there remains only one ground for an abortion which would have applied in this case: endangerment of the life or health of the mother,” Budzowska said.

“However, it is hard for the doctors to apply this in practice. They do not know if they make the right decision when this real danger occurs. If they carry out an abortion too early and the prosecutors then decide that there was no danger to the mother, they can face up to three years in prison,” the lawyer added.

Poland marches against abortion law after pregnant woman dies in hospital for want of care

The organisers of an annual far-right march in Warsaw to mark Poland's Independence Day said on Friday they would walk along their traditional route this year despite a ban from the town hall and losing a court appeal.

The event, held annually on November 11, has become a point of friction between far-right groups and supporters of the nationalist government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on one side, and their liberal opponents, including the Warsaw city hall, on the other.

The association that organises the march has asked for it to be registered as a cyclical event, which would give it priority over other demonstrations. They were granted this status by the regional governor, but the decision was struck down twice in court this week.

"The Appeals Court in Warsaw upheld the decision of the court of first instance revoking the region's consent to organise the Independence March as a cyclical assembly," the Warsaw city hall said in a statement.

also said a previously registered assembly is planned on the same spot, so a second event of this type cannot be organised at the same place and time.

European leaders lined up to chastise Warsaw on Thursday for challenging the EU's legal foundations, but Poland's premier said he would not bow to "blackmail" as he joined a summit of the bloc's 27 nations.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he was ready to resolve disputes with Brussels, though many are worried that a stubborn ideological rift between eastern and western Europe poses an existential threat to the EU itself.

"A few days ago, the legal bedrock of our Union was challenged," European Parliament President David Sassoli said in a letter as the leaders gathered in Brussels for their summit.

"This was not for the first time, of course, nor will it be the last. But never before has the Union been called into question so radically," the leader of the EU assembly said.

Long-running tensions between Poland's ruling nationalists and the bloc's liberal majority have spiked since Poland's Constitutional Tribunal ruled this month that elements of EU law were incompatible with the country's charter, challenging a central tenet of EU integration.

The dispute not only risks precipitating a new fundamental crisis for the bloc, which is still grappling with the aftermath of Brexit. It could deprive Poland of generous EU handouts.

'Clubs Have Rules'

"Some European institutions assume the right to decide on matters that have not been assigned to them," Morawiecki said as he went into the talks, which come two days after the executive European Commission threatened to take action against Warsaw.

"We will not act under the pressure of blackmail but we will of course talk about how to resolve the current disputes in dialogue."

His wealthier Western counterparts are particularly keen to prevent their governments' cash contributions to the EU benefiting socially conservative politicians who they see as undercutting human rights fixed in European laws.

"If you want to have the advantages of being in a club then you need to respect the rules," Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said. "You can't be a member of a club and say 'The rules don't apply to me'."

Leaders of countries from Ireland to France urged Warsaw to come back in line. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, referring to Poland's judicial overhaul that puts its courts under more government control, said it was difficult to see how new EU funding could be channelled to the eastern European country, adding: "We have to be tough".

An EU official said Rutte stood firm when the matter was discussed at the summit, but most leaders said decisions on how to deal with Poland should be left to the European Commission.

Morawiecki's Law and Justice (PiS) party has raised the stakes in years of increasingly bitter feuds with the EU over a range of democratic principles, from the freedom of courts and media to the rights of women, migrants and LGBT people.

The Commission has for now barred Warsaw from tapping into the 36 billion euros of grants and loans it requested from EU funds to help its economy recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top EU court may also slap more fines on Poland, the largest ex-communist EU country of 38 million people.

For the bloc, the latest twist in feuds with the eurosceptic PiS also comes at a sensitive time. The EU last year made a leap towards closer integration by agreeing on joint borrowing to raise 750 billion euros for post-pandemic economic recovery, overcoming stiff resistance from wealthy northern states.

No 'Polexit'

Morawiecki has dismissed the idea of "Polexit" - leaving the bloc - and popular support for membership remains at 88 per cent in Poland, which has benefited enormously from EU funding since it joined in 2004.

But Warsaw, backed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, wants to return powers to national capitals and has lashed out at what it says are excessive powers of the European Commission.

"Poland is one of the best European countries. There is no need for any sanctions, it's ridiculous," Orban said.

While many have grown increasingly frustrated at failed attempts to convince Warsaw to change tack, outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against isolating Poland.

"We have to find ways of coming back together," she said, adding that bringing multiple cases against Poland to the Court of Justice of the European Union was no solution.

Her sway, however, is weakened as the veteran of more than 100 summits during her 16 years in power visits Brussels for what may be her last gathering of EU leaders before she hands over to a new German chancellor.

No 'Polexit' Morawiecki has dismissed the idea of "Polexit" - leaving the bloc - and popular support for membership remains at 88 per cent in Poland, which has benefited enormously from EU funding since it joined in 2004.
