The minister called Pamela Anderson her inspiration after the US glamour model said that shooting for Playboy had been “an act of emancipation”.

“Like the Miss France. If they enjoy winning a beauty contest, I find that great too and we should support them,” Schiappa said.

The interview includes various innuendo-laden questions like “is politics an aphrodisiac?”&nbsp;and talks about the minister's past as an erotic novelist and author who wrote on issues like the female orgasm.

Some colleagues of the minister were left aghast by the interview's timing which came when France is going through a major political crisis and battling multiple strikes and violent protests over the increase in the retirement age.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne had called Schiappa to inform her that the unauthorised shoot was “not at all appropriate”, meanwhile, Equalities Minister Isabelle Rome broke the magazine's cover to criticise the initiative.

Women have right to pose nude, says French minister after Playboy shoot controversy

A French minister, Marlene Schiappa, is drawing flak from her own party members for appearing on the cover of Playboy magazine.

The 40-year-old author, a self-described feminist, had appeared in the magazine as part of a 12-page interview she did on women’s and LGBT rights.

In the cover photo, Schiappa, who is the Minister for the Social Economy and French Associations, was photographed wearing a white dress.

Her decision was not supported by her colleagues within the government, which has been battling violent demonstrations over President Emanuel Macron’s plans to increase the retirement age.

According to AFP, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who is only the second woman to occupy the position, called Schiappa to tell her that it "was not at all appropriate, especially in the current period".

The EELV party MP, Sandrine Rousseau, told BFM TV channel that she was not opposed to her decision, saying that she could have timed her move properly given the turmoil France is facing right now.

"Where is the respect for the French people? People who are going to have to work for two years more, who are demonstrating, who are losing days of salary, who aren't managing to eat because of inflation.”

"Women's bodies should be able to be exposed anywhere, I don't have a problem with that, but there's a social context."

However, the minister, who is the mother of two, defended her decision on Twitter on April 1.

Thailand's playboy King Maha Vajiralongkorn was secretly rushed to hospital after his bodyguard tested positive for coronavirus, reported New York Post. He was rushed to a hospital in Bangkok in early hours of Wednesday. As per media reports, the bodyguard contracted the deadly virus after the king's entourage flew to Thailand recently.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the king's illness is coronavirus related. But employees of the hospital where the king received the treatment were told to remain tightlipped about his illness.

Public disgust over claims that the former leader and his cronies looted 1MDB were a major factor in the shock election loss last month of Najib's long-ruling coalition.

Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor, notorious for her vast collection of designer handbags, have already been questioned by anti-corruption investigators over the disappearance of money from a former unit of 1MDB.

However, Low, a high-roller who hung out with celebrities in the US and reportedly splurged vast sums in New York party hotspots, is still at large and thought to be outside Malaysia.

The flamboyant 36-year-old held no official positions at 1MDB but is believed to have exerted great influence over the fund.

The US Justice Department alleges he funnelled vast sums of money from 1MDB to the United States, and used it to buy everything from rare art to high-end real estate. Low has previously denied any wrongdoing.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it was seeking Low to aid their investigations into SRC International, which used to be a subsidiary of 1MDB.

The anti-graft agency is also after the assistance of SRC director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that 42 million ringgit ($11 million) originating from SRC was transferred to Najib's personal bank accounts -- just one small part of the graft scandal.

A spokesman for Low said he was aware of the MACC request for assistance.

"Mr Low immediately instructed his lawyers to make contact with the MACC today with respect to offering such assistance," said a statement from the spokesman.

The financier's current whereabouts are unclear. He was believed to have been sailing around Asia on a luxury yacht allegedly bought with stolen 1MDB cash before it was seized off the Indonesian holiday island of Bali in February.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin meanwhile said that sufficient evidence had been gathered to bring Low to justice, state news agency Bernama reported.&nbsp;

She further claimed to decline the money offered by Trump saying &quot;That&#39;s not me. I&#39;m not that kind of girl&quot;.

McDougal delved into the lawsuit filed in a California court earlier this week, asking to be released from a contract she signed with American Media Inc. for her life rights.

Yet to do so would to overlook the significant cultural impact of both Hefner and Playboy, particularly during the 1950s under the shroud of Cold War anxieties.

Born April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, Hefner&rsquo;s entry into the world of journalism came as a teenager writing for a military magazine during World War II. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he began working as a copy-editor for men&rsquo;s magazine Esquire, before a pay dispute motivated him to leave the magazine in 1952.

He took out a mortgage and borrowed money from his mother to launch Playboy in 1953. The first issue, which famously featured Marilyn Monroe in the centrefold, indicated the magazine&rsquo;s explicit engagement with matters of sex, fun, and consumerism. In doing so, it challenged the idea of masculinity that had evolved around the nuclear family, and that held particular purchase in the early years of Cold War America.

A new man

The nuclear family - a mum, dad, and kids - was seen as an important barrier to communism in the years after World War II. This relied on specific roles for men and women to uphold the strength of the family and, by extension, the security of the nation.

Playboy dared to go beyond these expectations. Rather than restricting masculinity to the suburban malaise of postwar America, Playboy offered a model of manhood that was intelligent, fun, and sexy and, crucially, set in opposition to marriage.

Such a model was surely inspired by Hefner&rsquo;s own restlessness. Married to Mildred &ldquo;Millie&rdquo; Williams in 1949, he was already feeling the monotony of suburban life. The conventional markers of masculine success &ndash; a beautiful wife, a successful job, and an impressive home &ndash; left him, points our Hefner&#39;s biographer Russell Miller, &ldquo;bored beyond belief&rdquo;. They divorced in 1959.

Hefner, through his life and Playboy, turned the home from a woman&rsquo;s domain to an expression of a man&rsquo;s sophistication and &ldquo;urbane personality&rdquo;. This man could be interested in art, foreign films and literature (the magazine is famously remembered for publishing the works of authors like Ray Bradbury and Jack Kerouac), and took pleasure in bachelorhood, eagerly eschewing marriage and family.

In contrast, the mid-century Australian periodical Man magazine, was a place for men to dream of a life outside marriage, but ultimately accept their fate. Playboy rejected these notions.

Hefner and women

Of course, Playboy&rsquo;s attitude towards women is rightly remembered as problematic at best. The early years of the magazine portrayed American women as emasculating, money-hungry and obsessed with tricking a man into marriage. Such representations are surely offensive, but they speak to an uncertainty and tension that was circulating in the cultural landscape of the postwar US.

As the historian Carrie Pitzulo notes, to say that Playboy is sexist is nothing new. Indeed in his later years, surrounded by a throng of young, attractive women, Hefner seemed to embrace the lifestyle that Playboy advocated to an almost parodic extent. More recently, Playboy&rsquo;s attitude to women has been demonstrated by its on-off association with nudity.

American journalist Noor Tagouri appears in the magazine&#39;s October &quot;Renegades&quot; edition, a series that focuses on men and women &quot;who risked it all -- even their lives -- to do what they love.&quot;

The 22-year-old journalist who works as a reporter for Newsy, a video news network, is featured wearing a black leather jacket, jeans, sneakers and a hijab, or headscarf, in the publication that describes her as &quot;a badass activist.&quot;

Tagouri, who is of Libyan descent and whose goal is to become the first &quot;hijabi&quot; anchor on commercial US television, says that her struggles as a Muslim woman growing up in the United States have helped her move ahead in her career.
