‘As soon as we get preferential tariffs...’: India’s key condition for trade deal with US

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal launched a sharp attack on economists and critics questioning India’s latest GDP figures, which came in above the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate. Goyal said the record economic growth reflected the hard work of 140 crore Indians and should not be dismissed by comparing figures from different GDP series. "A few jobless people call themselves economists and appear on TV channels to harm the country. Do not fall for this," Goyal said. This comes as India recorded GDP growth of 7.8% in the April to June 2026 quarter, according to government data released on Tuesday, topping estimates by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other agencies. However, the figure sparked a debate over the government’s revised GDP series. Critics have argued that first quarter growth would have been around 2.6% if last year’s GDP had not been revised downward. Former finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg questioned the data in an interview with a television news channel. Garg argued that revisions to GDP at current prices had made the latest growth figure appear stronger. "The 7.8 per cent looks impressive on the face of it, but we should get into the reality of it," Garg said. "The current-price GDP last year was ₹86 trillion. This has been revised down to ₹80 trillion... If you had not revised last year's GDP, the growth in current prices would have been only 2.6 per cent," Subhash Chandra Garg told NDTV. The Opposition seized on Garg’s remarks and criticised the Narendra Modi-led central government over the revision. "Subhash Garg has punctured the government’s tall claims of 7.8% GDP growth, arguing that India’s real GDP growth is closer to 2.6%. His contention is even more damning: the previous year’s GDP growth was revised downward, making this year’s growth rate look stronger by comparison," Rajya Sabha member and Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said on X. Also Read: Xi Jinping urges Middle East nations to reject ‘external’ interference, seek new ‘security architecture’
Goyal hits back at critics
Responding to the allegations, Goyal said ministers from the concerned ministry do not manufacture economic data. He accused critics with a negative mindset of undermining themselves and urged the Opposition and others to stop "betraying" people by distorting the truth. "Record growth of 7.8% is something that no other country has been able to replicate. This is the capability, hard work, and joint effort of 140 crore people in the country. Due to this, India has emerged as a globally trusted partner. PM Modi has led the country with farsightedness," Goyal said. Goyal also accused Opposition leaders of trying to present the Indian economy in a negative light. "A few Opposition leaders who want to see India as 'a dead economy' will fail once again, just like they have failed again and again. India will continue to grow rapidly under the leadership of PM Modi," Goyal said while speaking to reporters at an event.

Also Read: Xi Jinping urges Middle East nations to reject ‘external’ interference, seek new ‘security architecture’ Goyal hits back at critics Responding to the allegations, Goyal said ministers from the concerned ministry do not manufacture economic data.

Piyush Goyal hit back at critics questioning India’s 7.8% GDP growth, dismissing claims that revisions to the GDP series made the latest figure look stronger.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal appeared to take a veiled swipe at China while courting Japanese investors in Tokyo, using the case of Alibaba founder Jack Ma to highlight India's business environment. Goyal said entrepreneurs in India do not have to worry about "disappearing one day" and later emerging as professors at a Japanese university—a remark widely interpreted as a reference to Ma, who vanished from public view for months after criticizing Chinese regulators in 2020. Goyal used the example to pitch India as a stable destination where entrepreneurship is celebrated, intellectual property is protected and data security is respected.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal took a veiled dig at China while pitching India to Japanese investors in Tokyo saying that they don't have to worry about disappearing after becoming successfull businessman in India and reappearing as a professor in a university in Japan, referring to Jack Ma founder of China's online marketplace Alibaba as an example who joined Tokyo College, University of Tokyo as visiting professor from May 1, 2023. Goyal was on a four-day official visit to Japan from August 24 to 27, 2026, leading a 200-member Indian business delegation seeking to deepen trade and investment ties between the two countries."Entrepreneurship is celebrated in India. You don't have to worry that if you make money in India, if you are a successful businessman, you may disappear one day and end up coming out as a professor in a Japanese University. That risk doesn't happen in India," said Goyal. Also Read: 'I can't take any more':Trump and Melania arguing over Natalie Harp at 250 Grand Prix?
Was Goyal referring to China?
While Goyal explicitly did not mention China, the reference was clearly towards China. Jack Ma, billionaire co-founder of Alibaba, had withdrawn from public life after criticising China's financial sector in 2020. Western media had framed him as the poster boy of China's tech industry. He publicly said state-owned banks had a “pawn shop” mentality. His public appearances decreased, though he appeared once publicly in January 2021 via a tightly stage-managed video address to rural teachers. He then gave up control of the Ant group in 2023, reducing his voting rights from 50 per cent to 6 per cent. He was then seen working as a visiting professor at Tokyo University in Japan. He was last seen publicly in February 2025 at a major government and tech sector meeting in China, where he shook hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Goyal was trying to suggest that India's neo-liberal free-market economic structure celebrates entrepreneurship and deregulation of the market. Eventhough crackdown on Jack Ma was anti-democratic, supporters of the crackdown suggest that Ant Group was operating and providing loans outside the traditional banking system, without massive cash reserves, and so a few defaulters would have had a ripple effect on the Chinese economy. They also suggest that the monopoly of Alipay was making it troublesome for competitors to survive.

India and US looking ahead to exciting opportunities in future tech and trade: US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday expressed confidence that India will remain the world's fastest-growing economy over the next 20 years, citing the country's resilience in turning challenges into opportunities and its growing appeal for long-term global investments. Speaking at the Citi India Conference 2026, Goyal stated that India has continuously emerged stronger during times of global uncertainty and stands out as a preferred destination for trade, manufacturing, business and investments. "India will continue to be the world's fastest-growing economy for over two decades into the future," Goyal said. He emphasised that India has repeatedly adjusted its policies and business approaches in response to evolving global conditions, leveraging crises as catalysts for growth and development. The minister added that his recent engagements with global investors further strengthened optimism about India’s long-term economic outlook and growth trajectory. "Every conversation that I had reinforced one truth. The world's long-term capital is looking at India and the opportunities that India presents," he said.
Hyundai's growth in India
Goyal said the question for investors is no longer whether they should invest in India, but how soon they recognise and tap into the country's growth story. He also cited the example of South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai to illustrate India's growth potential. He highlighted that the company entered India in 1999 when infrastructure conditions were under development and invested USD 200 million. According to Goyal, Hyundai began manufacturing vehicles a few years later and has continued to expand its operations. He said that over the last 10 years alone, Hyundai has created a value of more than USD 12-13 billion through the residual value of its stake, while also receiving royalties, dividends, and capital aggregating another USD 12-13 billion. Goyal also referred to British construction equipment manufacturer JCB, which entered India when infrastructure development was still at an early stage. He said JCB now manufactures products in India and exports them to nearly 130 countries while also serving the growing domestic market. "Hyundai and JCB bet on substance over noise," Goyal said, adding that their success reflects India's manufacturing capabilities and long-term growth potential. The minister said India today is not only serving its domestic market of 1.4 billion people but is increasingly becoming a manufacturing base for global markets.

They had been stuck in the war zone before being safely repatriated. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Goyal described the occasion as a "joyous day" for the families of the fishermen. "Today is a joyous day where our brothers and sisters who were suffering in Iran are coming back home to their families, their motherland. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday (April 4) welcomed Indian fishermen at Chennai international airport who arrived in Tamil Nadu after coordinated efforts by Indian authorities, especially the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), to evacuate them from West Asian countries amid the ongoing conflict. The group comprised an initial batch of 327 fishermen and a subsequent batch of 18, totalling 345, the majority of whom were from Tamil Nadu. They had been stuck in the war zone before being safely repatriated. Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Goyal described the occasion as a "joyous day" for the families of the fishermen. ‘Fruitful discussions to expand trade ties’: US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick travels to India, meets Piyush Goyal

India and the United States have signed an interim framework for a trade deal, and that has triggered protests from farmer groups across the country.
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal has maintained that no key agricultural sector has been opened. So if core crops are protected, where is the tension coming from?
To understand that, we must first look at the structural gap between Indian and American agriculture.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday (Feb 08) firmly denied India giving any concessions to the United States in agriculture and reiterated that the centre has ensured that the interests of farmers and producers of the country remain safeguarded. ‘Golden letter day’: Piyush Goyal hails India-US trade deal, rules out agriculture concessions

Amid uncertainty over the scope and specifics of the India–US trade deal announced by US President Donald Trump and subsequently confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday (February 3) shared insights into the deal. Addressing the media, Goyal asserted that the agreement would have wide-ranging benefits. “This deal will help everyone, all 140 crore Indians, from farmers to fisherfolk,” he said. He said that he had intended to brief Parliament on the matter, but refrained from doing so due to disruptions in the Lok Sabha. “But you saw the ugly scenes witnessed in the Lok Sabha today,” he remarked, placing the blame on the Opposition. “I condemn Rahul Gandhi for what happened,” he added, referring to the uproar triggered by the Leader of the Opposition’s attempt to cite an unpublished book by former Army chief Gen MM Naravane. Despite repeatedly claiming the deal would benefit multiple sectors, Goyal did not disclose specific provisions. He later acknowledged that negotiations were still ongoing and said a joint statement would be released in due course. Also Read: 'Won't allow privacy of any citizen to be compromised': Supreme Court slams Meta
Goyal credits Modi's personal rapport with Trump for the deal
Speaking on the substance of the trade deal, Goyal credited Prime Minister Modi’s personal rapport with the US president. “PM Modi used his friendship with Donald Trump to get the best deal among all the countries in the region, all countries that we compete with,” he said. He pointed to the pressures India had been facing before the agreement. “There were a lot of challenges. India was facing 50% tariffs; farmers were suffering; marine exporters were worried. Until a few days ago, Opposition leaders also had been asking us when the deal would happen,” Goyal noted. “We hadn't been able to get this deal for months, but PM Modi used his friendship to seal such a great deal, which will immensely benefit India,” he added. Responding to concerns that agriculture and dairy interests may have been compromised, Goyal insisted otherwise. “PM Modi has always looked out for the agriculture and dairy sectors, and he ensured that nothing bad happens to them,” he said. “PM Modi ensured that India's sensitive sectors, agriculture and dairy, were safeguarded and given attention in the deal.” He further claimed that coastal communities had already reacted positively. “Fishermen who export seafood celebrated in all coastal regions after the deal. This is a sign of how this deal heralds a bright future for India,” Goyal said, adding that engineering, textiles, marine products, and gems and jewellery were also expected to gain.
Goyal attacks Opposition
The minister then launched a direct attack on Opposition leaders, singling out Rahul Gandhi. “Rahul Gandhi is a negative person. He has a negative mentality. And any leader who joins hands with him — be it those from DMK or TMC — doesn't like a deal which will benefit so many sectors,” he said. 'All citizens are thanking PM Modi for a successful trade deal': Piyush Goyal on India-US trade agreement

Also Read: 'Won't allow privacy of any citizen to be compromised': Supreme Court slams Meta Goyal credits Modi's personal rapport with Trump for the deal Speaking on the substance of the trade deal, Goyal credited Prime Minister Modi’s personal rapport with the US president. Goyal attacks Opposition The minister then launched a direct attack on Opposition leaders, singling out Rahul Gandhi. “Rahul Gandhi is a negative person. He has a negative mentality. And any leader who joins hands with him — be it those from DMK or TMC — doesn't like a deal which will benefit so many sectors,” he said. He further asked, “Rahul Gandhi ko kya mirchi lagti hai? (Why does he feel the burn?) Does Rahul Gandhi have a problem with the country's growth?” Goyal went on to describe Gandhi’s outlook as “anti-national”. “The time has come for the citizens of the country to seek accountability from Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Stalin, Kanimozhi, Akhilesh Yadav,” he said, naming leaders from states expected to go to the polls within the next year. He will meet leaders and businesses to discuss ways to boost bilateral trade and investments. Goyal said the proposed trade agreement will cover market access and liberalisation of trade, progressively eliminate tariff barriers, and reduce non-tariff barriers by fast-tracking approvals and market access.

India's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), finalised in March 2024, will come into effect from October 1, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said on Monday. The EFTA deal, which covers Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland, will add to the list of trade agreements India has signed in recent years. At the same time, terms of reference for a pact with Eurasia have already been finalised. "Countries around the world, including developed nations, are eager to sign free trade agreements with India," he said, recalling that agreements have already been signed with the UAE, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Addressing the gathering, the minister highlighted the transformation of India's economy since 2014, noting that foreign exchange reserves now stand at USD 700 billion, nearly three times higher than the amount inherited then. He added that “within the next two years, India will become the world's third largest economy--a USD 5 trillion economy.” Goyal said India's GDP grew 7.8 per cent in the last quarter, while inflation recently fell to 2 per cent, the lowest since independence. He noted that banks are strong, lending capacity has improved, and interest rates have come down significantly. "In the last ten years under Prime Minister Modi, India has seen the lowest average inflation," he said. Speaking on the journey since 2014, Goyal reminded the audience that India was once counted among the world's "Fragile Five" economies. According to him, the transformation over the last 11 years has come through transparency and reforms. "Earlier, government resources like 2G spectrum, coal mines, iron ore mines, contracts, used to be handed over to relatives, associates, or party members. Modi ji ensured that everything is now given only through transparent auctions," Goyal stated. The minister also highlighted Uttar Pradesh's economic progress. "The state has reached new heights in just eight years. Uttar Pradesh today is on such a fast-paced runway of growth that it can perhaps now be called Unstoppable Uttar Pradesh," he said. Referring to the recent tax reform festival, Goyal said, “The reforms through the GST Bachhat Utsav, which have made many of our daily needs cheaper, are a gift from Prime Minister Modi ji to all of us during this Navratri.”

The Union Minister underlined that India is negotiating trade agreements with 27 countries, including the United States, the European Union, and Peru.
