After the procedure, Austin recovered without event and returned home the next morning. However, complications soon emerged and evaluation revealed that abdominal fluid collection was impairing the function of his small intestines.&nbsp;

"This resulted in the back up of his intestinal contents which was treated by placing a tube through his nose to drain his stomach. The abdominal fluid collections were drained by non-surgical drain placement."

However, according to a second US official as per Reuters, Biden maintained confidence in Austin and the two spoke on Saturday evening.&nbsp;

“I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better,” said Austin, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.” Austin said he will be “returning to the Pentagon soon.”

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks was prepared to step in during Austin’s illness, and made some routine decisions on his behalf during the time, a Defense Department spokesperson told AFP.

Top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Roger Wicker, accused the Pentagon of failing to inform Congress immediately about such matters and said that the incident further eroded the public’s trust in the Biden administration.&nbsp;

He also cited past failures of the current administration to quickly disclose information about national security incidents, including the appearance of a Chinese spy balloon over the US last year.&nbsp;

“When one of the country's two National Command Authorities is unable to perform their duties, military families, Members of Congress, and the American public deserve to know the full extent of the circumstances,” said Wicker in a statement.&nbsp;

Pentagon, speaking on the incident told WION that the drone was “fired from Iran.” Notably, it is the first time that Washington&nbsp;directly accused Tehran of targeting ships.&nbsp;

The attack, as per US officials, occurred at approximately 10:00 am &nbsp;(local time) in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles off India's Gujarat coast.

It said that the “motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker” was hit by “a one-way attack drone fired from Iran.”

In a statement to WION, the Pentagon said “No U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India.”&nbsp;

It added, “This is the seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping since 2021.”&nbsp;

The recent attack off the Indian coast came amid a flurry of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by the Yemen-based Iran-backed Houthi rebels amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The militant group had warned that they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies against dealing in Israeli ports.&nbsp;

This could be done via an online reporting tool that went live on Tuesday (Oct 31). However, there's a catch.

The form is called All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (Aaro) and it is available to people with the above-mentioned access on the US Defence Department website.&nbsp;

However, officials have reportedly said that the public will also be able to report such anomalies soon.

On the website, it says that Aaro "is intended as an initial point of contact … it is not intended for conveying potentially sensitive or classified information".

It signifies that the government is slowly inching towards living up to its promises of complete openness about what it does or doesn't know, about peculiar things like strange flashes in the sky, the possibility of alien life and sightings of UFOs or UAPs as they are now called.

For decades now, conspiracy theories about clandestine government programmes involving reports of alien vehicles and remains at Area 51 in the Mojave Desert have been a source of intrigue. 
 
However, as per the Aaro chief, people might be disappointed as they currently have "no evidence of any programme having ever existed to do any sort of reverse engineering, of any sort of extraterrestrial UAP programme."

Around 900 more troops from the United States have arrived in the Middle East or are heading there to bolster air defences for the American military personnel amid a surge in attacks by Iran-affiliated groups, said the Pentagon on Thursday (Oct 26).&nbsp;

American and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 16 times this month, said US officials. The update also comes a day after the Pentagon confirmed that a total of 21 US service members reported “minor injuries” following drone and rocket attacks on military bases in Iraq and Syria.

<h2>Rise in attacks</h2>

The latest attack, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told journalists, took place in the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq on Thursday. However, “no casualties” were reported and “some minor damage to infrastructure.”&nbsp;

Since October 17, “US and coalition forces have been attacked at least 12 separate times in Iraq (and) four separate times in Syria,” said Ryder, referring to the international coalition against the Islamic State.&nbsp;

When asked who is behind the attacks, he said, “We know that these are Iranian-backed militia groups that are supported by Iran and of course, we hold Iran responsible for these groups.”&nbsp;

This comes as tensions soar over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the region. The attacks have led US troops to be constantly on alert. During a false alarm at Al-Asad air base in Iraq on Thursday, a civilian contractor died after a cardiac arrest.

“Between Oct. 17-18, 21 US personnel received minor injuries due to drone attacks at Al Assad Airbase, Iraq, and Al-Tanf Garrison, Syria,” Ryder said on Wednesday (Oct 25). He added, “All members returned to duty.”

<h2>US to send troops, warships and fighter aircraft</h2>

Following the recent attacks, the US, in addition to sending troops – whose number is now in thousands – also deployed warships and fighter aircraft to the region since the conflict erupted on October 7 which includes two aircraft carriers in a bid to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the war, Washington has been one of the biggest supporters of Israel with multiple high-ranking US officials, including President Joe Biden visiting the country in a show of support.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the US media also reported how the US military was taking new measures to protect its Middle East forces during this rise in attacks, the responsibility for a few of which has been claimed by Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing officials also said that the US is ramping up monitoring from guard towers on its military facilities; increasing security at base access points and increasing operations to counter potential incoming drones, rockets and missiles.&nbsp;

The US also plans to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and Patriot missile batteries, said the news agency. There are around 2,500 American troops in Iraq and some 900 in Syria as part of efforts to prevent a resurgence of IS.&nbsp;

“What we are seeing is the prospect for more significant escalation against US forces and personnel across the region in the very near term coming from Iranian proxy forces, and ultimately from Iran,” said Ryder.&nbsp;

On Monday (Oct 23), Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias, claimed responsibility for these attacks.&nbsp;

<h2>Over 20 American personnel sustained injuries&nbsp;</h2>

The US Central Command or CENTCOM told NBC News that at least 20 American personnel sustained minor injuries on October 18 during a one-way drone attack on the al-Tanf military base in southern Syria, adding that one of the drones was shot down.

The US has stationed some 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq to combat IS.&nbsp;
