PM Modi in Patna: Now they have even started asking for proof of the Air Strike

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad`s elder son Tej Pratap Yadav has invalidated the claims of rift between him and his&nbsp;brother&nbsp;Tejashwi.

He said, "There are no differences with my brother Tejashwi, we are very close".

His clarification came amid reports that said&nbsp;Tej Pratap accused his younger brother of trying to sideline him in the party. He had reportedly also said that there are certain anti-social elements in the party who are trying to ruin the party.

Tej Pratap rules out difference with Tejashwi

India erupted in violence Monday as Dalit protesters went on the rampage against an alleged dilution of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.&nbsp;

At least nine people were killed in North India, as the protesters blocked trains, clashed with police and set fire to vehicles across several states during a nationwide bandh.&nbsp;

Six people were killed in Madhya Pradesh, at least five of them in the crossfire between the police and protesters. Three other people died, two in Uttar Pradesh and one in Alwar, Rajasthan.&nbsp;

The Army and paramilitary forces were also put on standby in Punjab.

The Union Home Ministry, which rushed 800 anti-riot policemen to MP and UP, asked all states to take preventive steps and maintain public order to ensure safety of lives and property.

Transport, mobile and internet services were hit in many states with over 100 trains getting affected due to protests.&nbsp;

The protests follow a March 20 Supreme Court order banning the automatic arrest and filing of cases against people accused under the act. The court had wanted to protect "honest" public servants discharging bona fide duties from being blackmailed with false cases under the Act but the Dalits believe the order may lead to an increase in violence against the community (which already faces massive discrimination at the hands of upper caste and OBC Hindus.&nbsp;

While some states had ordered closure of educational institutions as a precautionary measure, incidents of arson, firing and vandalism were reported from MP, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar and Punjab, among other places.

In UP, nearly 75 persons including 40 policemen were injured in violent protests in various parts of the state. Police have detained nearly 450 people there.

In Rajasthan, 26 people including nine policemen were injured in Alwar.

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, a prominent Dalit leader and head of NDA constituent LJP, appreciated the government's quick decision.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad alleged that incidents of atrocities on Dalits and minorities have increased in the country since the NDA came to power in 2014, while AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended his support to the protesting groups.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath appealed for peace and urged the people not to vitiate law and order, as violence was reported from many districts including Azamgarh where protesters torched two state-run buses, injuring several passengers. 
As protests turned violent in Agra, Hapur, Meerut in western UP, Director General of Police (DGP), O P Singh, said, "We have sought more force from the Centre that will be deployed there."

Many trains, including premier Rajdhani and Shatabdi expresses, were stopped by protestors while some were short-terminated.

A group of about 2,000 people disrupted trains at the Hapur station as well, disrupting the movement of many goods trains, railway officials added.

The CBSE has already postponed Class 12 and Class 10 examinations scheduled to be held today in Punjab at the request of the state government in view of the 'Bharat Bandh'.

In the national capital region, protesters squatted on tracks at several places, stopping trains, including the Dehradun Express and the Ranchi Rajdhani, while a Northern Railway official said services were also disrupted by a mob in Ghaziabad.

Shouting slogans of "Jai Bhim", the protesters also blocked roads affecting traffic movement, police said.

In Patna, protesters stormed the railway station, forced closure of ticket counters and squatted on tracks disrupting movement of a number of trains.

Normal life was also affected in several parts of Odisha where activists of different Dalit groups put up road blockades.

Major towns and cities of Gujarat also witnessed protests while civic-run transport services were halted after some of the buses were targeted by agitators.&nbsp;

Bharat Bandh protests: As violence sweeps across India, death toll rises to 9

There is something very unassuming about Anand Kumar. The mathematician, who through his Super 30 classes has transformed lives of many underprivileged kids over the years, wears success lightly on his shoulder. Kumar, whose students crack IIT every year, states that he finds immense happiness transforming and inspiring children from the lower strata of the society and while he has had the option to take up a cushioned job and lead a life of luxury, the mathematician states that teaching remains his first love and he would not give it up for anything.&nbsp;

His beginnings were humble. Always the bright student in the class, Kumar taught neighbour's kids and even classmates from an early age. Son a postal clerk, raised in Patna, Bihar, Anand got through prestigious Cambridge University but could not attend it as he did not have sufficient funds and the untimely death of his father.&nbsp;

Anand studied mathematics and helped his mother with her business at night. In 1992, he started the Ramanujan School of Mathematics - a tutorial that taught children maths. The tuition centre started thriving within a short span of time, but Anand wanted to do something for those kids who may have had the potential to make it to top universities- like him, but was unable to due to lack of guidance and funds. In 2002, he conducted a screening exam to select 30 students belonging to lower-income group families, for his Super 30 programme. The programme now in its 15th year trains students for IIT-JEE exams. Kumar's success rate is extremely high, and most of his students make it to one of the top colleges in the country each year.&nbsp;

In Delhi for a visit, WION caught up with this genius and spoke about Super 30, his inspirations, the Indian education system and why Hrithik Roshan is a perfect choice for the lead role.

Here are the excerpts of the interview.&nbsp;

Q: Do you feel there is a need to change the Indian education system?

A: Yes, definitely there is a need for a change. The biggest flaw of the current system is that it doesn't teach children how to question. Kids are taught to memorize the answers, they are not giving practical knowledge. They need to be taught how the lessons can be used in their daily lives. They should be taught the 'how and why' of mathematical formulas.&nbsp;

Q: What is Super 30 all about? How did it start?

A: There are so many kids who belong to poor families in our society. I got an offer from Cambridge University but due to a financial crisis, I couldn't go. I've always felt the pain of poverty and that's why I decided to start Super 30 for underprivileged students. A child had approached me back in 2000 to help him prepare for IIT-Jee exams. He belonged to a poor family and couldn't afford the expensive coaching classes that were available in Patna. That motivated me to start Super 30 classes.&nbsp;

Q: How does one get enrolled in the Super 30 programme?

A: We conduct entrance tests every year in April, for this programme. One can go to our website Super30.org to know about the exam centres and we select students on the basis of their performance in the entrance test.&nbsp;

Q: You do not take any donations for Super 30? How does the programme get funded? 
 
A: Yes, a lot of people did offer me financial help for Super 30 but I did not accept any of it. &nbsp;We want to show the world that we could generate funds on our own. We generate money ourselves. We conduct evening tutorials for those students who are from a good economic background. The money they pay for the classes is used for Super 30 classes and also helps me run my home.&nbsp;

Q: Tell us about some of the students who have benefitted from Super 30 classes 
 
A: There are several stories that are worth mentioning. A boy called Anup, who belonged to a very poor family, came for Super 30 classes. His family was so poor that they couldn't even afford their daily meals properly. One night his father left their home in order to get some food but never returned. The mother has raised her son on her own. Her only advice to her son was that only education can change one's fortune. They came to Patna after the boy passed his 10th exam and happened to meet us. When I enquired where they were staying in Patna, they said they were spending the nights at the Railway station. &nbsp;The boy was included in our Super 30 classes eventually. He went to IIT Bombay to do his engineering. His first job was in Dubai and now he owns a Software company in Bombay. Anup is just one of the many such students who come to us.&nbsp;

Q: Did you ever feel that you should leave teaching and settle for a more high-paying corporate job? 
 
A: Teaching is my passion. I find immense happiness in interacting with children. When I go to New York to deliver lecture at universities, I get to meet my students. Some of them who belonged to really poor families and are now settled in New York. They are always warm and welcoming towards me. It gives me immense happiness to see their success.&nbsp;

Q: When did you realise that you want to become a teacher?&nbsp; 
 
A: I was in 6th standard when our immediate neighbour approached me to teach their daughter maths. She was in the fourth standard and the family was well to do. On the first day, the girl addressed me as 'Sir'. It felt so good that someone was calling me 'Sir'. I taught her younger brother as well later. So that's how the interest in teaching began. I used to teach Maths to my classmates in school.&nbsp;

Q: Who inspires you the most? 
 
A: My teachers have inspired me the most. Dr DP Verma, Mohammad Sahabuddin, Dr Balgangadhar Prasad and even my father, who is not there anymore, inspired me and motivated me to do better in life.&nbsp;

Q: A film is being made on your life. Were you apprehensive that now people will get to know every little detail about you?&nbsp; 
 
A: I think Super 30, the film is shaping up really well. It will inspire students to excel despite the odds. It beautifully shows how one can overcome problems if one has the determination to achieve things.&nbsp;

Q: Hrithik Roshan plays you in the film. Do you feel he is the perfect choice for the role? 
 
A: There were a lot of actors who could have played the role well but Hrithik Roshan's dedication towards the script and his role was unmatched. He is very hardworking. Which is why he was perfect for the role.&nbsp;

Q: Any message for those who do not make it to IIT? 
 
A: Every child is gifted. Every child has the potential to excel in a certain field. There are a lot of kids in Super 30 who may be preparing for IIT but are also gifted painters, musicians. So it is important for our society to train children and nurture talents.&nbsp;

Q: You have achieved so much in life, yet your father, who&nbsp;inspired you so much isn't there to see it. Do you miss him? 
A: Yes, a lot. A lot of life lessons were taught by him and now that I have achieved things, he isn't there to see it. His absence is irreplaceable.&nbsp;

Patna was established in 1802 by Scottish agriculturist William Fullarton to provide housing for people who worked on his Skeldon estate and coalfields. He named the town after Patna in Bihar, where he was born and spent his formative years.

Patna had always been an important centre of learning and trade,&nbsp;said Y K Sinha, the Indian high commissioner to the UK who was the chief guest at the event over the weekend.

Fullarton created Patna in Scotland in memory of his father, Surgeon William Fullarton, who was associated with the British East India Company and served in India between 1744-66, during which time he established close contacts with local historians, painters, artists and traders.

Bihar Diwas, which marks the day the state of Bihar was carved out of the Bengal Presidency by the British in 1912, is celebrated every year on March 22.

The event in Scotland on March 17 was organised by the Patna Community Association, along with the Vibrant Communities group. It involved cultural performances by Indian dance groups and young people from Patna Primary.

Sinha, himself from the state of Bihar, promised to extend all possible support to the institutions linking the two cities. He traced the history of Patna, the ancient city of Patliputra, capital of past empires, and highlighted the role of the city in India&#39;s freedom struggle and in the making of modern India.

Reliving some of his own memories of Patna, he made a special mention of the Nalanda University, one of the earliest and biggest centres of learning in the ancient world. Today, the modern Nalanda University revives the glorious academic heritage of India, he noted.

The event coincided with an exhibition depicting the culture and cuisine of Patna. Community members also presented glimpses of major festivals of Bihar such as Chhat Pooja, Sama Chakeva, Teej and celebrated the lives of Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavira and Guru Gobind Singh.

The Consulate General of India in Edinburgh, which is headed by Anju Ranjan, also presented an audio-visual tour of the culture and touristic destinations of Bihar and history of Patna.

Tiwary lodged a case of sexual harassment and mental torture against the UNFPA chief, reports said.&nbsp;

She complained of harassment against him saying that she lost her job after she refused to assent to his demands.&nbsp;

She said &quot;I used to work at UN Population Fund&#39;s Bihar office. I met him when he came to Patna for 3 days. Some incidents happened at that time. I did not cower down to his demands. He began pressurising me to relent. As a result I lost my job&quot;.

However, the UN agency has dismissed the charges against its official and put forward diplomatic immunity for him.

Prashanti had also requested External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to waive the immunity of the UNFPA India chief so that a trial against him could be initiated in the Indian court.&nbsp;

She said &quot; I have complained against India Rep &amp; Asst Rep of UN Population Fund alleging them of &#39;character assassination&#39;. I have complained about the same to MEA. I have asked the government to waive off his immunity (India rep) so he can be tried in Court.&quot;

Bihar BJP chief apologises for 'warning' to PM Modi's dissenters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bihar tomorrow to attend the centenary celebrations of the Patna University and launch several development projects worth over Rs 3,700 crore.

This will be the prime minister&#39;s first full-fledged official tour to the state since the BJP became a part of the ruling coalition in Bihar in July this year.

In August, Modi along with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had made an aerial survey of the flood-hit districts of Bihar.

After attending the Patna University function, the prime minister will fly by helicopter to Mokama, which is in Patna district about 100 km from the capital city.

Modi will launch a number of development projects there.

The state BJP president has been hinting that a bonanza was on the cards, terming the prime minister&#39;s visit as a &quot;Diwali gift&quot; to the people of Bihar in general and Mokama in particular.

At Mokama, Modi will lay the foundation stone for four Rs 3031 crore national highways projects and as many sewage treatment plants (STPs) and related works worth Rs 738.04 crore tomorrow, an official statement said.

Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, who also holds the portfolio of water resources, will accompany the prime minister for the ceremony.

The four highway projects for which the foundation stone will be laid, include the four-laning of Aunta-Simariya section of NH-31 and the construction of six-lane Ganga Setu at a cost of Rs 1,161 crore.

The other projects were four laning of Bakhtiyapur-Mokama section of NH-31 spending Rs 837 crore, two-lane construction of Maheshkhunt-Saharsa-Purnea section of NH 107 at a cost of Rs 736 crore and two-lane construction of Bihar Sharif Barbigha-Mokama section of NH-82 at the cost of Rs 297 crore.

The sewerage projects include the development of STPs and related network at Beur and Saidpur. These will create a capacity of treating 120 million litres daily (MLD), the statement said.

The project also includes upgradation of existing 20 MLD-capacity system. Besides, sewer network of 234.84 km will also be developed in the Beur and Saidpur zones, the statement said.

In Patna, seven other sewerage projects are already at various stages of implementation.

The existing population in the city is 16.83 lakh and the existing sewage generated in the city is 220 MLD and sewage load is expected to be 320 MLD by the year 2035.

&quot;Considering the existing treatment capacity of the city and existing waste generation and (estimated) waste generation till 2035, a total of 11 projects under World Bank funding are sanctioned for six zones which will create a total of 350 MLD of STP capacity and will lay down 1140.26 km of sewerage network at a cost of Rs 3582.41crore,&quot; the statement said.

After completion of these 11 projects, Patna will become a town having 100 per cent sewerage infrastructure and no sewage water will drain into Ganga, it said.

The impoverished state has high hopes from the prime minister, who had announced a &quot;package&quot; of Rs 1.25 lakh crore in 2015.

Meanwhile, tight security arrangements were in place for the prime minister&#39;s visit.

Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) said seven Superintendents of Police and 12 deputy SPs had been deployed to oversee the security arrangements and regulation of road traffic during nearly five-hour stay of the prime minister in the state.

&quot;Four companies of the Bihar Military Police and a Quick Response Team comprising eight units of Special Task Force and two of Anti-Terrorist Squad have also been deployed,&quot; he said.

PM Modi to visit Bihar to attend Patna University centenary celebrations

Thousands of Sikh devotees from India and abroad have congregated at Takht Sri Harimandir ji Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, to participate in the celebrations that kicked off on Tuesday.

The celebrations are for the 350th birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

Three mega tent cities have been erected at Patna&rsquo;s Gandhi Maidan, Kangan Ghat and the Patna Old bypass.

At least 10 special trains and 300 buses have reportedly ferried over 25,000 devotees from Punjab, free of cost.

Cooks from Amritsar in Punjab have arrived at the historic gurdwara to prepare the special &#39;prasad&#39; for devotees.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal, have also arrived at Patna today, to partake in the celebrations, where they will share the stage with Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar.

This is one of the largest celebrations of the Sikh guru&rsquo;s birth anniversary.

Thousands of Sikh devotees from India and abroad have congregated at Takht Sri Harimandir ji Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, to participate in the celebrations that kicked off on Tuesday. The celebrations are for the 350th birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Patna Sahib, after Golden Temple, is one of the holiest and the most revered places for Sikhs. The preparations for this celebration have been underway for months now. The devouts are enthusiastically performing 'seva' or voluntary service. Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agrawal said, “Patna to Patna Sahib has turned into a mini Punjab,” reports IANS.
