First-time director Celine Song's heartwarming and beautifully crushing tale Past Lives has earned a spot in the Best Picture category this year among heavyweights like Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things. While the film's nomination in the top category has been hailed for inclusivity (something that The Academy has been adhering to for the past few years now), the film's snub in some of the other categories has also been mourned.&nbsp;

The film stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo who play childhood sweethearts who separate when one of their families migrates to Canada and subsequently the US. The theme of the story is based on the Korean concept of inyeon where two people's lives intertwine between the past and the present.&nbsp;Inyeon is popularly understood to mean something like fate or destiny, referring to the ties between people over the course of their lives.&nbsp;The film has two childhood friends and lovers reconnecting with each other after every 12 years even as they built their lives separately in different countries. Korean-Canadian director&nbsp;Celine&nbsp;Song&nbsp;says her life as an immigrant inspired the Oscar-nominated film Past Lives. She shared this piece of information while&nbsp;speaking ahead of the film's release in South Korean cinemas on Wednesday.

Specifically, she drew on a conversation between her friend visiting from South Korea and her husband at a bar in New York,&nbsp;Song&nbsp;told a press conference in the capital, Seoul.

"As a bilingual, I was translating between the two who couldn't communicate and it made me realise I was translating some parts of my identity and history," she added.

The star-studded room featured luminaries like Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Aniston, Robert Downey Jr., Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, Lily Gladstone, Ayo Edebiri and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Closing the luncheon with a benediction, the legendary 91-year-old Ellen Burstyn expressed gratitude&nbsp;for being part of this "amazing tribe" and thanked everyone for celebrating the best without turning it into a competition.

"I feel blessed to be part of this amazing tribe,” the 91-year-old Oscar, Emmy and Tony award winner said. “Thank you all for celebrating the best without making it a competition, just a shared appreciation. We appreciate you all.”

Closing the luncheon with a benediction, the legendary 91-year-old Ellen Burstyn expressed gratitude for being part of this "amazing tribe" and thanked everyone for celebrating the best without turning it into a competition. "I feel blessed to be part of this amazing tribe,” the 91-year-old Oscar, Emmy and Tony award winner said. “Thank you all for celebrating the best without making it a competition, just a shared appreciation. Past Lives won big at the recently concluded Gotham Awards. It won the top prize for Best Feature at the awards ceremony while the acting honours went to Charles Melton for his supporting performance in Todd Haynes’ May December and Lily Gladstone for her lead performance in The Unknown Country.

On behalf of the&nbsp;Past Lives team, writer-director Celine Song came to collect the big prize and said in her speech, “Thank you, Gotham, for this award. It’s such an honour. It really means the world to receive it with my debut set in New York City, a city I live in and love deeply.” She was joined on the stage by two of the film’s stars, Greta Lee and John Magaro.

For the unversed, Gotham Awards are usually attuned to recognising independent films. It recently removed the cap of a $35 million budget for potential nominees so more films could participate.&nbsp;
