Paris police arrested 5 suspects in a knife assault case

A man suspected of wounding two people with a meat cleaver near the former offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris has admitted staging the attack, linking it to the republication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed by the satirical weekly.

The man, who said he was born in Pakistan and is 18, "takes responsibility for his action which he places in the context of the republication of cartoons" of the Prophet Mohammed in Charlie Hebdo, according to AFP.

The stabbing came three weeks into the trial of suspected accomplices in the 2015 massacre of Charlie Hebdo’s staff, which was claimed by a branch of al Qaeda.

The man said during questioning he places his actions “in the context of the republication of cartoons” of the Prophet Mohammed in Charlie Hebdo, the source said.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the primary suspect was not on police radar despite a recent arrest for carrying a weapon.

The suspected assailant was arrested in June, but had not been previously flagged for possible religious radicalisation, according to the interior ministry.

Two people were wounded in the attack outside Charlie Hebdo’s former offices, in Paris’s eastern 11th arrondissement (district). The suspect was arrested by police not far from the scene.

The Premieres Lignes news production agency said the wounded were its employees – a man and a woman taking a cigarette break outside. The company specialises in investigative reports and produces the prize-winning Cash Investigation programme.

In a Twitter post, Charlie Hebdo expressed its support for "the people affected by this odious attack".

They were victims of "fanaticism" and "intolerance", Charlie Hebdo said, calling the main suspect and his possible accomplice "terrorists".

The Eiffel Tower in French capital Paris has reportedly been evacuated. On Wednesday, Reuters reported that the iconic European tourist site had to be evacuated.

It’s not clear yet whether the evacuation was due to a bomb threat, which many local media outlets have reported.

The Daily Mail reported that the landmark was cordoned off by the police after they received an anonymous tip claiming explosives were placed in the area surrounding it.

Twitter users shared clips from the region, which showed police officers shutting off entry/exit points to the landmark. Additionally, explosives teams are searching the area.

All roads leading to the area have been forced shut, and people have been advised to avoid the route altogether.

Yellow vest protests hit global headlines in late 2018 as protesters wearing yellow jackets/ shirts took to streets in France. The protesters showed their anger against fuel taxes and cost of living.

The anti-government protests were curbed by coronavirus lockdown this year.

By midday on Saturday, hundreds of demonstrators had gathered at the starting points of two authorised marches in Paris.

While one cortege proceeded without incident, the other march was aborted as police clashed with groups who left the designated route and set fire to waste bins and a car.

Some protesters wore black clothes and carried the flag of an anti-fascist movement, suggesting the presence of radical demonstrators dubbed “black blocks” often blamed for violence at street marches in France.

The police repeatedly used tear gas to counter small groups of roaming protesters, before they dispersed towards the end of the afternoon.

Paris authorities on Saturday made wearing masks mandatory in busy areas of the French capital from Monday to stem the rise of coronavirus infections. Paris authorities on Saturday made wearing masks mandatory in busy areas of the French capital from Monday to stem the rise of coronavirus infections. The order applies to people aged 11 and over, the Paris prefecture said in a statement, adding that indicators showed the virus had begun circulating more widely since mid-July. The rate of positive tests in the greater Paris region now stood at 2.4% compared with a national average of 1.6%, it said. The zones where masks must be worn will be detailed separately, and evaluated on a regular basis, the prefecture said. They will include some densely populated areas in the capital's lower-income suburbs. After tough lockdown measures slowed infection rates, many European countries are now watching new clusters after easing restrictions to try to limit the economic damage and alleviate public frustration. France has made it compulsory to wear a face mask in closed public spaces such as shops and banks since July 21, and Paris joins a growing list of cities ordering people to wear masks in busy zones outdoors, including Toulouse, Lille and Biarritz. "It needs to be done, even if it is not particularly pleasant," Parisian Ofra Hoffman said in the run-up to the announcement. The number of people in France infected with coronavirus rose by 2,288 on Friday, a new post-lockdown high. (With inputs from Reuters)

After a huge fire at the very famous and historic Notre-Dame last year, the workers have started dismantling the grand organ.

The organ, which is the biggest instrument in France, will now be restored by the experts for the fifth anniversary of the fire — that took place on April 15, 2019.

The organ was covered in soot and damaged by humidity, and not directly by the fires that damaged the roof of the Paris Cathedral.

“It is an absolute miracle that it has survived. An organ like this is enormous and looks indestructible, but it is actually very fragile,” Olivier Latry, one of Notre-Dame’s official organ players, told a local media house.

Workers will dismantle its five keyboards, pedalboard and the 109 stop knobs that control airflow to its 8,000 pipes, some as high as 10 metres.

After the fires destroyed parts of the cathedral, the French President Emmanuel Macron promised to restore the entire structure within five years and the Church officials are hoping to be able to conduct mass by the next Olympic Games in 2021, which will be held in Paris.
