Andy Murray said he was retiring "on my terms" as his trophy-filled career came to an emotional end at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, closing another chapter on tennis's golden generation. The former world number one and three-time Grand Slam title winner slipped into retirement aged 37 when he and Dan Evans lost in the men's doubles quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

American pair Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul delivered the knockout blow with a 6-2, 6-4 victory on a packed Court Suzanne Lenglen. Britain's Murray had already announced that the Olympics would be his last event.

"I'm proud of my career, my achievements and what I put into the sport," said Murray. "Obviously it was emotional because it's the last time I will play a competitive match. But I am genuinely happy just now. I'm happy with how it finished."

He added: "I'm glad I got to go out here at the Olympics and finish on my terms because at times in the last few years that wasn't a certainty."

Just a few hours after Murray had made his exit, he cheekily wrote on X: "Never even liked tennis anyway".

Career-long rival Novak Djokovic described Murray as "an incredible competitor". "One of the greatest warriors tennis has seen. His fighting spirit is definitely something that I'm sure is going to inspire many generations to come," said the Serb.

- Injury toll -

One of the 'Big Four' in the sport, Murray joins 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer in retirement after the Swiss great quit in 2022.

Rafael Nadal, the winner of 22 majors but battling more injuries at the age of 38, exited the Paris Olympics on Wednesday and suggested that he had played his last match at Roland Garros, where he won 14 of his Slams.

Nadal also effectively ruled himself out of the US Open, sparking more speculation that the great Spaniard is also finished in the sport. That would leave just 37-year-old Djokovic -- winner of a record 24 Grand Slams -- still active amongst the sport's eminent talents who have carved up 69 majors between them.

Murray famously ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's champion at Wimbledon when he triumphed in 2013, defeating Djokovic in the final. He added a second title in 2016, taking his career majors total to three after breaking his duck at the 2012 US Open.

Murray won gold at the 2012 Olympics on an emotional day at the All England Club when he defeated Federer just weeks after he had lost the Wimbledon final to the Swiss on the same Centre Court. Four years later he defeated Juan Martin del Potro to become the first player, man or woman, to win two Olympic singles golds.

Murray also led Britain to the Davis Cup title in 2015, the country's first in 79 years. He has won 46 titles in all and banked around $65 million in prize money. However, he has been ravaged by injuries in recent years, slumping to 117th in the world.

The Scot has played with a metal hip since 2019 and suffered ankle damage earlier this year before undergoing surgery to remove a spinal cyst, which ruled him out of singles at Wimbledon. Instead, he played doubles with brother Jamie and was defeated in the first round before an emotional tribute arranged by tournament chiefs.

"It's hard because I would love to keep playing, but I can't," admitted Murray at the All England Club. "Physically it is too tough now, all of the injuries, they have added up and they haven't been insignificant."

Men's tennis has already opened up a new frontier. Jannik Sinner, the 22-year-old Italian, succeeded Djokovic as Australian Open champion in January and eventually took his world number one ranking. Carlos Alcaraz, 21, won the French Open and successfully defended his Wimbledon title, sweeping Djokovic off court in a one-sided final in July.

"It was a privilege to share the court with you, Andy!" Alcaraz wrote on X in tribute to Murray. "Congratulations on a legendary career and for being an example to all. You will always have a fan here."

A huge controversy has erupted at the Paris Olympics. Italian boxer Angela Carini has quit her bout against Algeria's Imane Khelif in 46 seconds in the Women's 66 kg category. Khelif is in the spotlight after she was disqualified at the 2023 World Championship over a failed gender test with many against her participation in the women's event and deeming her a 'biological male'. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also reacted to the row and said that the fight was not on equal footing.

Canada advanced to the knockout stages of the Paris Olympics against all the odds following a 1-0 victory over Colombia in Marseille. The defending Olympic champions had won both their group matches, but were docked six points after being found guilty of using a drone to spy on New Zealand's training session ahead of their opening match of the Games.

Indian pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out of the Paris Olympics 2024 men’s doubles in badminton after they lost to Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik on Thursday (August 1). The Indian pairing favourite to win at least a bronze medal lost to the Malaysian pair 13-21, 21-14, 21-16 despite winning the opening game. The defeat also means India missed out on a medal with both Chirag-Satwik looked at as prospects. The hopes from badminton now lie on the shoulders of PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy with the latter two meeting in the R16 of men’s singles.

Chirag-Satwik lose in QF

One of the brightest prospects of medals for India, the pair was a step closer to booking their place in the semis and made a bright start to the match. They won the opening game with ease having dropped just 13 points. However, the second game saw their world turn upside-down as the Malaysian pair made a good comeback. They won the second game 21-14 to take the match into the deciding third game.

In the third game, the Indian pair struggled to make an impact and were trailing until the midway point before finding their mojo. Despite being down 6-2 at one stage they managed to go into the break at 11-9. With a close battle for a place in the semis, the Indian pair lost their concentration at the crucial stage.

Despite leading 16-15 in the final game, both Chirag-Satwik lost six consecutive points to lose the match and hand the semis berth to their Malaysian opponents.

India will now rely on PV Sindhu who will be a bigger prospect of medal in women’s singles having won medals at the last two Olympics. She won silver in Rio (2016) and followed that with a bronze medal in Tokyo (2020) and will be hoping to go better this time.

Paris Olympics 2024: Who is Swapnil Kusale, third Indian shooter to win bronze in French capital?

JD Vance has courted controversy yet again for his old statements after US gymnast Simone Biles won a record eighth Olympics gold in Paris on Tuesday (Jul 31). Vance, the Republican vice president nominee had criticised Biles in 2021, when she pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics citing mental health issues.

In the interview with Fox News dated July 2021, Vance called out the media for supporting Biles and making a hero out of her on quitting the biggest sporting tournament in the world.

“It’s understandable that she was going through an incredible amount of pressure,” the Ohio senator said at the time.

“What I find so weird about this – and it reflects on the media more than it does on Simone Biles – is that we’ve tried to turn a very tragic moment, Simone Biles quitting the Olympic team, into this act of heroism,” he added.

Vance, the VP pick by Trump, suggested that instead of praising people for their strength and heroic moments, we are instead celebrating their weakest moments.

“Being an athlete at that level is incredibly tough. A normal response at this moment would be to say, ‘It’s just a shame that she’s going through this. It’s a shame that she quit,’ but instead, what our press has done, I think, is turn this into this weird therapeutic moment. ‘Let’s praise her for doing this.’ And I think that’s really where the problem herein lies,” said Vance.

Biles' comeback story

Notably, Biles had pulled out of the Olympics as she was suffering from a condition known as the "twisties" under which her spatial awareness while performing the death-defying routines up in air took a hit. Gymnasts usually suffer from the condition which creates a high-risk and dangerous situation when they are attempting to stick landings.

Despite the setback, Biles bounced back in style in Paris and secured an eighth gold medal in the women's team event on Tuesday - becoming the most decorated gymnast in the US and fifth-most decorated female Olympic gymnast. She still has four more events on her schedule -- and four more opportunities to add to her medal collection.

Remember when JD Vance called Simone Biles weak when she withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics? Why do these Republican men hate women so much?pic.twitter.com/WRClQiRe7k — Alex Cole (@acnewsitics) July 31, 2024 × Biles' comeback story Notably, Biles had pulled out of the Olympics as she was suffering from a condition known as the "twisties" under which her spatial awareness while performing the death-defying routines up in air took a hit. It was a big relief for the organisers of the Paris Olympics 2024 as the men’s and women’s triathlon events are set to kick start on Wednesday (July 31). After initial postponement, the World Triathlon and the Paris Games' organising committee put up a joint statement regarding the event . Earlier, due to the poor condition of the Seine River, the event was put on hold with further postponements expected.

Triathlon events to start on Wednesday

"The parties involved have confirmed that the women's triathlon and the men's triathlon will take place as planned. The results of the latest water analyses have been deemed in order," said the organising committee in a statement early Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the quality of the water in river Seine was not appropriate for the events to go forward which saw the organisers postpone triathlon. However, according to the organisers, the quality of the water has improved in the last 24 hours making it fit for the swimmers to participate.

“It is with great joy that we received this news,” Benjamin Maze, technical director for France’s triathlon federation, told Reuters.

“Now that we know we will race, we can mentally switch fully into competition mode," he added.

Fifty-five women representing 34 countries will kick off the contest at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT), with France’s Cassandre Beaugrand and Britain’s Beth Potter, two of the top contenders for gold, set to dive into the river side by side.

The men’s event will take place at 10:45 a.m., immediately after the women’s race.

“The results of the latest water analyses, received at 3.20 a.m., have been assessed as compliant by World Triathlon allowing for the triathlon competitions to take place,” Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said in a statement.

Rafael Nadal kept alive his dream of a third Olympic gold on Tuesday, powering into the men's doubles quarter-finals alongside teammate Carlos Alcaraz as Andy Murray once again came back from the dead.

A tearful Coco Gauff crashed out of the singles after a heated row with the umpire but women's top seed Iga Swiatek cruised into the last eight.

In the men's draw, defending champion Alexander Zverev reached the third round after beating Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic in straight sets and was joined in the last 16 by Russia's Daniil Medvedev, playing as a neutral.

With temperatures rocketing into the mid-30s Celsius, officials activated a heat protocol at Roland Garros, allowing a 10-minute break between the second and third sets.

Nadal was back on court alongside Alcaraz in the "Nadalcaraz" dream team just 24 hours after he was dumped out of the singles competition by Novak Djokovic in their 60th contest.

The Spanish pair, backed by a vocal crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen, lost the second set but stepped up a gear in the match tie-break to beat Dutch team Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 10-2 in two hours and 22 minutes.

"We had fun because the score was positive in the (match) tie-break," said Nadal.

"We have been suffering but we are enjoying playing together, we are creating good synergies, good energy, so yeah, we are having fun in general terms."

The 38-year-old, a 14-time French Open champion, has been plagued by injuries in recent years and has slumped to 161st in the world.

He said after his painful defeat to Djokovic that he would make a decision on his future after the Paris Games, where he still has a chance to add to his singles gold at the 2008 Beijing Games and doubles triumph in Rio in 2016.

Murray magic

Britain's Murray, playing in the final tournament of his career alongside Dan Evans in the doubles, saved match points for the second successive round.

Murray and Evans defeated Belgium's Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-3, 6-7 (8/10), 11-9 to qualify for the quarter-finals.

They saved two match points in the nerve-shredding final-set tie-break, two days after they had saved five match points in their opening-round victory.

Murray said he cried "happy tears" on court after sealing the emotional win.

"Excited that we managed to get through another amazing finish," said the three-time Grand Slam champion. "It takes a lot out of you, that sort of stuff. So I'm glad we got a day off tomorrow!"

Earlier, Croatia's Donna Vekic shocked women's world number two Gauff 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 but the match was overshadowed by a lengthy row between the US Open champion and the chair umpire.

Gauff, the flag-bearer for the United States at the Olympic opening ceremony alongside NBA star LeBron James, had a long argument with the official at the end of the sixth game of the second set.

At 30-40, Vekic hit a return deep to Gauff's forehand, which the American mishit into the net.

Vekic's shot was called out but the call was overruled by the chair umpire and the point was awarded to the Croat, giving her a crucial break. Gauff argued her shot was compromised by the initial call.

"I have to advocate for myself all the time," a weeping Gauff, 20, said on court. "I'm getting cheated in this game. You guys are not fair to me."

Vekic, the world number 21, briefly lost her composure, slipping to 0-40 on her own serve before recovering to hold, and she broke again.

Swiatek won her 24th straight match on the clay courts of Paris against China's Wang Xiyu 6-3, 6-4 and will face America's Danielle Collins next.

There were also wins for three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber of Germany, Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova and China's Zheng Qinwen.

Paris Olympics 2024: Rafael Nadal keeps hopes alive with doubles win, Andy Murray back from the brink

Simone Biles won the fifth Olympic gold of her legendary career as she led the United States to an emphatic victory in the women's gymnastics team final on Tuesday, as Daniel Wiffen made Irish history in swimming.

On a sweltering day in Paris where temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), the hottest ticket in town was at the Bercy Arena where Biles was attempting to lay the ghosts of Tokyo 2021 to rest.

The 27-year-old American -- considered the greatest gymnast of all time -- and her team did just that to add to her four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Games.

Three years ago in Tokyo Biles battled a disorientating mental block that gymnasts call the "twisties", and without her the USA had to settle for silver.

But with Biles back to her brilliant best, she and teammates Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Sunisa Lee led wire-to-wire to reclaim gold ahead of Italy, with Brazil taking bronze.

For Biles it marks a return to the Olympic summit after a two-year break as she focused on her mental health. Lee, the all-around champion in Tokyo, has since dealt with two career-threatening kidney ailments.

Biles said her second team gold -- eight years after her first -- felt different.

"It was just like we were a little young and naive," she said of 2016. "So it didn't hit the way that it does now.

"Now that I'm much older, we have so much more experience and we're out here really having fun and enjoying what we're doing."

Once again the stars were out for Biles.

Serena Williams, Nicole Kidman and Bill Gates were in attendance, as was Biles's husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, in a T-shirt emblazoned with his wife's name and picture.

Irish history

Wiffen was in tears on the podium at La Defense Arena after becoming the first Irishman ever to win an Olympic swimming gold.

"I don't normally cry, so I really hope that nobody's gonna see that," he said.

The 23-year-old powered home in the 800m freestyle in 7min 38.19sec, the fifth-fastest time ever, ahead of American defending champion Bobby Finke and Tokyo silver medallist Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy.

Wiffen, who was born in England and is the world champion, will also contest the 1,500m freestyle and 10km open water swim in Paris.

Kaylee McKeown retained her crown in the women's 100m backstroke, producing a blistering second lap to beat world record-holder Regan Smith of the USA.

It was Australia's fourth gold in the pool in Paris.

Britain triumphed in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay.

In punishing heat at Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal kept alive his dream of a third Olympic gold as he powered into the men's doubles quarter-finals alongside Carlos Alcaraz.

Andy Murray, who has said he will quit tennis after the Games, delayed his retirement with another thrilling doubles win with Dan Evans, saving two match points.

But women's world number two Coco Gauff crashed out of the singles in a stormy defeat to Croatian Donna Vekic.

Vekic won 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals after Gauff claimed she was "getting cheated" in an argument with the chair umpire over a line call.

New Zealand's women defended their Olympic rugby sevens title after roaring back to beat Canada 19-12 in front of a near-capacity 69,000 crowd at the Stade de France.

In men's football, Thierry Henry's France set up a potentially explosive quarter-final showdown with Argentina.

And NBA star Victor Wembanyama scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help France scrape past Japan 94-90 and into the quarter-finals in the men's basketball.

Japan ended day four top of the overall medals table with seven golds, with China and Australia on six, and France and South Korea on five.

More Seine doubts

Earlier, in a massive blow to Olympic organisers who have repeatedly vowed that the River Seine would be safe to swim in, Tuesday's men's triathlon race was called off hours before the start after last-minute water-quality tests.

A joint statement from Paris 2024 and World Triathlon blamed the spike in pollution levels on the heavy rain that drenched Paris on Friday and Saturday.

The men's triathlon has been rescheduled to Wednesday, immediately after the women's event, leaving Games chiefs keeping their fingers crossed.

After the intense heat of the day, a major storm was forecast late on, raising fresh doubts over whether Wednesday's rescheduled events could go ahead.

Heavy downpours still overwhelm the city's underground drains and sewage system, leading to untreated effluent being released into the waterway.

The Paris Olympics 2024 has witnessed plenty of controversies right from the opening week, with the organisers trying hard to get out of hot waters. From expelling journalists to wrongly announcing country names, headlines have been made for all the wrong reasons. However, Tuesday (July 30) saw a different side of the coin when arch international rivals North Korea and South Korea showed a glimpse of rare unity at the Paris Games.

North, South Korea come together on podium

On Tuesday, after South Korea won bronze and North Korea the silver in the mixed doubles of table tennis behind China, South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon took a group photo after the medal ceremony. The photograph featured North Korea's Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong, the South's Shin Yu-bin and the victorious Chinese team Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha all beamed into Lim's phone, a South Korean-made Samsung.

The rare occasion of both countries sharing the podium surprised many international fans, considering both nations are arch enemies and have poor diplomatic relations. The strained relationship goes back to the 1950s, when the two nations went to war.

Nuclear-armed North Korea declared the South its principal enemy earlier this year, and tensions between the two countries are at one of their highest points in years.

Recently, North Korea sent trash balloons to South Korean territory, highlighting the bad blood between the nations.

However, Tuesday saw a rare scene where athletes from the rival nations were seen sharing the podium. The medal for North Korea was also its first since the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, having opted to pull out of the Tokyo Games in 2021 due to COVID-19.

"I congratulated them when they were introduced as silver medallists," Lim told Korean media after the award ceremony.

Carlos Alcaraz shrugged off an injury scare to reach the last 16 of the Olympic singles tennis on Monday and said he will fight to be "100 percent" for doubles with Rafael Nadal.

The world number three from Spain beat Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands 6-1, 7-6 (7/3) to stay on course for a gold medal to add to his four Grand Slam titles.

The 21-year-old Alcaraz is back on court on Tuesday alongside Nadal when he will again face Griekspoor, who partners Wesley Koolhof.

"It's a pain that I've been dealing with the last tournaments so I know what I have to do," Alcaraz said of his groin niggle.

"It's normal for a tennis player as this game is so demanding.

"I will try to recover and be ready and at 100 percent in the doubles."

Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, needed to leave the court to have treatment on his right leg late in the second set and then had to save a set point.

In the next round of singles he will face Roman Safiullin, the Russian player competing at the Olympics as a neutral.

Earlier Monday, Alcaraz had seen Nadal swept off court by old rival Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the pair's 60th meeting.

The defeat ended injury-plagued Nadal's outside hopes of winning a second singles gold after his 2008 triumph in Beijing.

But Alcaraz can still help his compatriot win a second doubles gold after Nadal teamed with Marc Lopez at the 2016 Rio Games.

"When Djokovic is playing at this level it's really, really difficult to play against him," said Alcaraz.

"He was really aggressive, made no mistakes, moving very, very well. I saw Rafa playing let's say not his best tennis for sure.

"But when Djokovic is like this, he was the better one."

Griekspoor, 28, lost for the third time in three meetings with Alcaraz and has yet to win a set off the Spaniard.

"I didn't see any problems with him," said the 28th-ranked Dutchman.

"He went for every shot in the tiebreak. It's not like he fell down or twisted his ankle and that he couldn't walk anymore. For me, he was still all over the place."

Indian shooters Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh bagged the bronze medal in the 10-metre air-pistol mixed-team event on Day 4 of the Paris Olympics 2024. WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo speaks to Sarabjot Singh exclusively. Watch in!

Paris Olympics 2024: 'It requires immense hard work to win an Olympic medal', says Sarabjot Singh

Manu Bhaker created history at Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday (Jul 30) by winning a bronze medal in mixed 10m air pistol event with Sarabjot Singh. With the medal, Manu became the first Indian athlete to win twin Olympic medals at single edition.

The shooter, however, isn't the first to win two medals for India at a single Olympic games. Before her, Norman Pritchard had won two medals for India at the 1900 games - also in Paris.

Pritchard had won his two medals - both silver - in men's 200m dash and 200m hurdles event. He, however, had participated from both Britain and India at the 1900 Paris Games as per Olympics.com website but his medals are counted in India's tally.

"Pritchard moved to England in the summer of 1900 and was elected a member of London AC in June after which he competed in the AAA Championships, which he entered as a member of the London AC and the Bengal Presidency AC, further adding to the confusion. The British team was chosen for the 1900 Olympics based on the results of the 1900 AAA Championships, and Pritchard's runner-up finish to Al Kraenzlein in the 120y hurdles garnered him Olympic selection," notes Olympics.com website.

As for Manu, she had previously won a bronze in women's 10m air pistol event - getting the first medal for India at the Paris Olympic 2024 games.

She also became only the second Indian woman with two Olympic medals. Before her, badminton player PV Sindhu had won medals in 2016 Rio Olympics (silver) and 2021 Tokyo Olympics (bronze).

Overall, India now have two medals at the ongoing Games with plenty more expected courtesy of Sindhu (badminton), Neeraj Chopra (javelin), hockey teams, etc.

Manu will also be participating in women's 25m pistol event and given her form, she's expected to do well and add another possible third medal for India and herself.
