“Bring Back Sajid Gondal” was the top trend on Twitter in Pakistan after reports of him going missing started circulating on social media.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan's top aide Lt Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa resigned soon after after allegations that he used his offices to help family set up several off-shore businesses surfaced.

Former Pakistan Army spokesman Bajwa, who also served as Commander of the Southern Command, rejected the allegations against him and resigned as special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) on information and broadcasting.

Prime Minister Khan's close aide senator Faisal Javed Khan tweeted that the Prime Minister asked Bajwa to continue as he was satisfied with the rebuttal issued by the former Army officer.

"Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided not to accept resignation of @AsimSBajwa from SAPM (Info &amp; Broadcasting) post and has given instructions to continue working," according to the tweet.

Bajwa resigned after a report on a website alleged that he had used his offices in setting up off-shore businesses of his wife, sons and brothers.

The report alleged that Bajwa's younger brothers opened their first Papa John's pizza restaurant in 2002, the year he started working as a Lieutenant Colonel on the General Pervez Musharraf's staff.

It claimed that his brother Nadeem Bajwa, 53, who started as a delivery driver for the pizza restaurant franchise, another three brothers, his wife Farrukh Zeba and three sons now own a business empire which set up 99 companies in four countries, including a pizza franchise with 133 restaurants worth an estimated USD 39.9 million.

The Bajwa family's companies spent an estimated USD 52.2 million to develop their businesses and USD 14.5 million to purchase properties in the United States, according to the report.

Bajwa has rejected the allegations, saying they are "incorrect and false" and he was ready to prove it to any judicial forum.

Meanwhile, journalist Ahmed Noorani, who published the report a few days ago on a website, claimed that he has received threats to his life after publishing the news.&nbsp;

Pakistan's military says security forces shot and killed a local militant commander along with four of his associates in a raid on Monday near the border with Afghanistan.

It identified the slain commander as Wasim Zakaria and said he was involved in multiple attacks on security forces.

The military said he was also involved in the killing of Zubaidullah Khan, a federal housing official who was gunned down in May while visiting his village in North Waziristan to celebrate the Islamic festival of Eid al-Fitr.

North Waziristan served as headquarters for local and foreign militants until 2017, when the army said it had cleared the region of insurgents following several operations. The region still sees sporadic attacks, mainly targeting security forces.

Tens of thousands of people protested across Pakistan on Friday against French magazine Charlie Hebdo`s reprinting of cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammad, chanting "Death to France" and calling for boycotts of French products.

"Decapitation is the punishment of blasphemers," read one of the placards carried by protesters.
The cartoons sending up the Prophet Mohammad triggered outrage and unrest among Muslims around the world in 2005 when they first published by Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Earlier this week, Charlie Hebdo - a satirical weekly - revived the cartoons to mark the start of the trial of suspected accomplices in an Islamist militant attack on its Paris office in January 2015.

The Islamist gunmen who stormed into Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people, sought to avenge the Prophet Mohammad, a French court heard on Wednesday on the first day of the trial. Publication of the cartoons was cited as the reason for the attack.

Friday`s protests were organized by the hardline Islamist Tehreek-e-Laibak Pakistan (TLP) party with rallies held in Karachi, the country`s largest city, as well as in Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore and Dera Ismail Khan.
Protesters paralysed traffic in Karachi, Pakistan`s financial and business capital.

“It (re-printing of cartoons) amounts to big terrorism; they repeat such acts of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammad every few years. It should be stopped,” said Razi Hussani, TLP district leader in Karachi.
Similar rallies held in Pakistan in 2015 turned violent, with scores injured as police clashed with protesters trying to make their way to the French consulate in Karachi.

Pakistan`s government also condemned the reprinting of the cartoons. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the South Asian country believed in freedom of expression but such liberty does not mean a license to offend religious sentiment.

Charlie Hebdo has long tested the limits of what society will accept in the name of free speech.

“We will never lie down. We will never give up,” Charlie Hebdo editor Riss Sourisseau wrote in explaining the decision to re-publish the cartoons.

After selling its land to Chinese projects. Islamabad is now selling the seas to Beijing. Chinese vessels have been allowed to fish in Pakistan's exclusive economic zone.

But it's news because of some surprising developments in Karachi. Pakistani citizens are out by the hundreds protesting against China.

These are mostly Pakistani fishermen. They are protesting against the arrival of 20 deep-sea trawlers from China. These trawlers arrived in the first week of August.

And they have been permitted to fish off the coasts of Sindh and Balochistan.&nbsp;

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-anti-china-protests-rock-karachi-325080/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

Pakistani fishermen do not want the Chinese to fish in their waters. They say --- today these vessels might deprive them of a good catch. But tomorrow --- they may end up destroying the entire ecological environment of these waters.

According to the Pakistan fisherfolk forum, fish stocks in coastal areas have already declined by more than 72% since last year. This is largely due to uncontrolled fishing.

And now these people fear that Chinese trawlers will make things worse. &nbsp;
&nbsp;
According to some estimates, fishing--- is a source of livelihood for more than 2.5 million people in Pakistan's coastal towns.

These fishermen use small boats that can't venture into deep waters...

Chinese trawlers can and they are equipped with large fishing nets. They can capture fish in big numbers and given that the vessels are Chinese.&nbsp;

One can only imagine the predatory practices they will indulge in --- at the expense of Pakistanis.

The Chinese are known for their insatiable appetite for seafood. &nbsp;They account for one-third of the world's consumption. Nothing to be proud of here. China's stocks around its coasts have depleted because of this.

Beijing's giant trawlers are increasingly looking for new avenues --- new targets. They started with the South China Sea and now they have reached the Arabian sea.&nbsp;

What is the Pakistan govt doing?

It is busy being insulted at the United Nations. Pakistan wanted the UN to designate Indians as global terrorists.

It failed. Five countries blocked Pakistan's move at the UNSC. Just look at the audacity here. A country consistently grey-listed by the FATF for failing to curb terror.

Tried declaring Indians as terrorists. Anyway, Pakistan's plan did not work.

It submitted the names of four Indians for designation under the 1267 sanctions committee of the UNSC.

The Indians in question were Angara Appaji, Gobinda Patnaik, Ajoy Mistry and Venu-Madhav Dongara.&nbsp;

They were all working in Afghanistan with private companies. Islamabad said these men were funding terror groups in Pakistan.

The names of two men were already rejected earlier.

Now the other two have also been cleared. The UNSC committee did not find any evidence to substantiate Pakistan's claim.

The United Kingdom. the United States, France, Germany, and Belgium. These 5 countries took the lead and blocked Pakistan's request.

Chinese ships at its coasts. Protests on its soil. And setbacks at international platforms.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz and 300 workers of her party were booked on Friday under terrorism charges for allegedly attacking law enforcers and hooliganism.

Police included Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 in the FIR registered against the (PML-N) leaders and workers three weeks ago during their clash with police outside the office of national anti-graft body in Lahore where Maryam had come to appear in a land corruption case.

PML-N has protested inclusion of terrorism charges in the FIR, saying this has been done at the best of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"Imran Khan gets unnerved seeing Maryam Nawaz active in politics. First the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) initiated a false land probe against Maryam at Imran's behest and now police booked her and other PML-N men under terrorism charges on the premier's order,? PML-N lawmaker Azma Bokhari told reporters in reaction to the police action.
Most of the PML-N leaders including Maryam's husband Capt (R) Safdar are on bail. Maryam however has yet to seek bail in this case.

Azma said the PML-N will challenge inclusion of terrorism charges in the court.

Violence had erupted outside the NAB office on August 11 in Lahore as heavy police contingents and workers of the PML-N confronted each other shortly after the arrival of Maryam there in a land acquisition case to record her statement.

Several PML-N workers, policemen and NAB officials had suffered injuries during the clash and 58 arrested who were later released on bail.

The PML-N had filed a complaint regarding registration of FIR against Prime Minister Imran Khan, NAB chairman Javed Iqbal, PM's adviser Shahzad Akbar and the Punjab government for -- making an attempt on the life of Maryam Nawaz -- by attacking on her car, but police refused to register it.

"Had I not been in a bullet-proof car there could have been a loss of life. There was an organised conspiracy behind calling me to the NAB office. They wanted to cause harm to me," Maryam had said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, journalist Ahmed Noorani, who published the report a few days ago on a website, claimed that he has received threats to his life after publishing the news.&nbsp;

Pakistan is keen to list a Hindu name at the United Nations Security Council terror list even as its bid to list 4 Indians have failed earlier this week. Islamabad was keen to list 2 Indian nationals Gobinda Patnaik, and Angara Appaji as UN terrorists but the bid was rejected earlier this week after the country failed to provide any evidence.&nbsp;

UN Security council sources said, "Their main aim was to bring at least one Hindu name so that they can sustain their narrative of Hindu terror."&nbsp;

"Imran Khan's comments are self-explanatory, especially the language he has been using."&nbsp;

Pakistani PM has been trying to raise the bogey of so-called "Hindu terror" as part of domestic propaganda, and the action by Pakistan at UN is seen in that line. The recent actions look like "no-cost" endeavour for Pakistan because they can randomly give few names and continue their propaganda for a year or so. It must be remembered that Pakistan has the largest number of its nationals listed as International terrorists by the UN.

India is expected to remain vigilant as one slip up and some innocent Indian will end up in the list, his name being sullied by Pakistan. The thinking in the Indian establishment is that already Islamabad has sullied the names of 4 innocent people for no reason but to further their propaganda. Earlier, it attempted to list 2 other Indians-- Venumadhav Dongara, Ajoy Mistry as a terrorist, but the bid failed.

What is in India's favour is the United Nations Security Council's 1267 committee works on the basis of evidence. &nbsp;In particular, the western countries, especially those that blocked the listing, look a lot into actual evidence.

The listing this week was blocked by 5 UNSC countries--UK, USA, France, Germany and Belgium after no evidence was found to substantiate Pakistan's claim. UNSC members gave Pakistan time to provide evidence but Islamabad could not provide it.&nbsp;

Pakistan: Lt General Asim Bajwa steps down as special assistant to PM Imran Khan

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have both been known to&nbsp;finance terrorists, providing&nbsp;them safe havens. Both the countries are also linked to major terror attacks - &nbsp; 9/11 in the US and 26/11 in Mumbai. And now both these countries may be controlling the United Nations office for counter-terrorism.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have an illustrious record when it comes to terrorism. And now they control the UN office that is supposed to ensure international cooperation against terrorism.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-pakistan-and-saudi-arabia-running-un-anti-terror-office-324838/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

A new report claims that Saudi Arabia wants to influence counter-terrorism efforts at the United Nations through big donations, and that an international civil servant of Pakistani origin, Jehangir Khan is the director of this branch of the UN.

In 2011, the UN created the counter-terrorism centre to promote cooperation for anti-terrorism efforts and support member states. From day one, Saudi Arabia has been the biggest donor to this centre. It started with 10 million Dollars. Three years later, it increased its contribution by 10 times. Saudi Arabia donated 100 million Dollars to the counter-terrorism centre.

This centre survives on donation because what it gets from the UN budget covers only 4 per cent of its expenses, while the rest of the money comes from member states. And Saudi cash makes up 47 per cent of the entire fund.

So why does Riyadh spend so much money on it?&nbsp;

The report also says Saudi Arabia's influence and power is hard to measure. For instance, Saudi Arabia decides who will be in-charge. Its ambassador to the UN has been the chair of this centre's advisory board since 2012. Saudi Arabia decides where meetings will be held, and at least two board meetings of this centre have taken place in Riyadh. One meeting that took place in 2018 was attended by Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Saudi Arabia also decides how the money will be spent. In 2018, the UN conducted an internal audit of the centre, which the Saudis did not like. Another audit was then ordered. A proposal in the original audit report recommended a new system of functioning which would have limited Saudi Arabia's influence. It said that the role, membership and working methods of the centre should be reviewed and that its funding should be diversified.

The Pakistan connection

An insider in the ruling Saudi elite feels that Riyadh doesn't "get much" from the UN centre for its money. And this is where Pakistan comes in. Jehangir Khan is the director of the United Nations counter-terrorism centre. He is said to have close ties to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The report calls him "the Saudi whisperer". However, there is no direct evidence against Jehangir Khan which says that he's influencing the UN counter-terrorism efforts on behalf of Saudi Arabia or Pakistan.

Jehangir Khan started his career as an international diplomat with the Saudi Arabian mission to the UN, and has now completed 20 years in the organisation.

According to one claim Khan is goal oriented but secretive. Another person says he takes over projects that will "satisfy the Saudis". High level UN staff members are required to file a financial disclosure form. But it’s upto them whether they want to make it public or not.

Jehangir Khan has kept his financial disclosures private. As a UN servant Jehangir Khan was able to purchase two apartments in the Trump world tower at the UN Plaza, properties worth well over three million Dollars. Khan denies all charges of impropriety.&nbsp;

In 2016 the former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon made a very serious accusation and said that Saudi Arabia was exerting unacceptable and undue pressure on the UN.&nbsp;This was after the Saudi led military coalition for Yemen was blacklisted. When the Saudi coalition was found responsible for the deaths of hundreds of children in the war, Riyadh threatened to cut funding to UN programmes. Owing to this, UN removed the Saudi-led coalition from the blacklist.

As of July this year Saudi Arabia is the world's largest donor to the UN counter-terrorism office. A few years back, Saudi Arabia was also the head of the UN Human Rights Council.

Pakistan blocks Tinder, other dating apps over 'immoral' content

Pakistan on Tuesday blocked access to Tinder and several other dating apps in a bid to control "immoral" and "indecent" content, just days after regulators threatened to shut down YouTube for similar reasons.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said it had barred users from accessing Tinder, Grindr, SayHi, Tagged and Skout after the social networking apps failed to "moderate... content in accordance" with Pakistan's laws.

The PTA said the ban addressed the "negative effects of immoral/indecent content".

Shahzad Ahmad, director of digital rights group Bytes For All, slammed the PTA's "moral policing".

"If adults choose to be on an app, it is not for the state to dictate whether they should use it or not," Ahmad told AFP.

Pakistan has neither an effective telemetry system nor modern weather forecast radars for timely prediction of flooding, the national disaster management agency has said, as seasonal torrential rains claimed 134 lives and injured 81 others in the last over two months since the monsoon began in the country.

Telemetry is the automatic recording and transmission of data from remote or inaccessible sources to an IT system in a different location for monitoring and analysis.

Every year, Pakistan struggle to cope with the annual monsoon deluge and other rain-related incidents which cause huge loss of life and properties. The monsoon season runs from June-July through September.

Monsoon rains are lashing Pakistan at a time when authorities are trying to contain the spread of the coronovirus, which caused 6,288 deaths since February when the country reported its first case.

Nine more people -- five in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and four in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) -- died overnight, pushing the nationwide monsoon-related death toll to 134, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Sunday.

"Of those killed, 61 are males, 14 females and 59 children,? it said, adding that 81 people, including 10 in the last 24 hours, were also injured in various rain-related incidents across the country.

According to the National Monsoon Contingency Plan 2020 compiled by the NDMA, "The country still does not have an effective aviation system to deal with flood disasters and other catastrophes,"

The report noted that Pakistan has a medium and long term forecast system capable of accurately predicting the weather for a period of only 7 to 15 days while the seasonal weather forecast accuracy rate is also not more than 65-70%, the Express Tribune reported on Saturday.

The contingency report indicated that Pakistan is relying on old technology for weather forecast which makes it difficult to make standard and accurate atmospheric predictions. It said the availability of data on the discharge of water in the eastern rivers depends on timely information from India.

There is no telemetry system for flash flood warning in the mountainous regions in Khyber Pakhtunkwa, South Punjab, Balochistan and PoK, the report said.

It also underlined that Pakistan does not always have an aviation system ready for disaster management.

Seasonal torrential rains in Pakistan have so far claimed 48 lives in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, followed by 34 in Sindh, 17 in Balochistan, 14 in Punjab, 11 in Gilgit-Baltistan region and 10 in PoK.

Among those injured, 42 were reported from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 13 from Balochistan, nine from Sindh, eight from Punjab, five from PoK and four from Gilgit-Baltistan.

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains damaged 1,001 houses fully and 435 others partially, the NDMA said.

The authorities have so far provided about 830 tons of food to people affected by rain and related mishaps. They were also given 14,985 tents, 2,956 blankets and 2,200 mosquito nets in addition to other supplies.

Monsoon rains hit the sub-continent every year in summer, bringing heavy downpour that trigger floods and landslides and displace hundreds and thousands of people.
